Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the in vitro micro-tensile bond strengths of three adhesive systems to different dentin surfaces in which adhesion failure has occurred, and to study the morphology of re-adhesion to such dentin surfaces. Methods: The occlusal enamel of human premolars extracted for orthodontic purposes was removed and treated with adhesive Single Bond 2 to establish the re-adhesion dentin model.A polishing machine was used to polish the hybrid-layer dentin surfaces and the dentin surfaces with the hybrid-layer removed. The premolars were bonded with three adhesives respectively. Resin Z250 was applied to the premolars in all groups.Premolars were sectioned into composite-dentin slabs, tested for μTBS and observed using SEM.Fracture modes were identified using TEM and SEM.Statistical analysis was performed using a two-way ANOVA and LSD-test.Results: The mean value of μTBS to hybrid layer dentin surfaces was significantly lower than to normal dentin surfaces in every group. When any of the three adhesives bond to hybrid-layer dentin surfaces, the thickness of the hybrid layer is thinner than that formed when bonding to normal dentin surfaces.Gaps can be seen. When compared with the adhesive layer of normal dentin surfaces, more smear particles can be observed in the adhesive layer of premolars in hybrid layer groups and hybrid-layer removed groups. Conclusion: Our test demonstrated that the existence of the hybrid layer and the resin smear layer can result in decreased micro-bond strength with the dentin when performing re-adhesion.
