Abstract:In recent years,more and more hydraulic projects are built on the infinite deep pervious foundation and many of them take the hanging cut-off walls to solve the seepage control of dam foundation problems.But as for the seepage calculation of these dams,there is not any accurate theoretical formula.As a result,approximate formulas or empirical functions are often used.In this paper the conformal transformation method is used to get the inferential reasoning formulas: seepage pressure formula,seepage discharge formula and seepage gradient formula.The formulas are simple,not only to calculate the average seepage gradient and seepage discharge,but also to calculate the distribution of the seepage pressure.Ascompared with boundary element model and finite element model,their computation load is smaller.The calculation accuracy can meet engineering demand.
Numerical Analysis of Seepage for Concrete Face Rockfill Dam with Cracks Based on Block Equivalent Continuum Method

Abstract:There are many practical problems in the rapid development of the concrete face rockfill dam, which mainly focus on a large number of cracks and extrusion breakages in the face slab caused by temperature-induced stress, shrinkage stress, deformation of dam and other reasons, which eventually lead to leakage, threatening the safety of the dam. To solve this problem, the three-dimensional finite element analysis method is combined with the block equivalent continuum method to calculate the three-dimensional seepage field of the dam area, in order to study the seepage characteristics of numerous and unevenly distributed cracks in the concrete face rockfill dam; then, the corresponding head distribution and seepage characteristics, including the phreatic line, the hydraulic gradient and the seepage discharge, were obtained. The findings of this paper validate the accuracy and reliability of the block equivalent continuum method. It not only meets the requirements of simulation accuracy, but also can obtain the characteristics of the local seepage field near the crack. At the same time, it greatly simplifies the finite element model and significantly improves the efficiency of seepage calculation. This method provides a reference for the seepage analysis of similar projects.

Abstract:The permeability coefficient of a concrete slab rockfill dam (CFRD) was calculated in this paper on the basis of the equivalent quasi-continuum model for the percolation of crack-intensive face. This calculation helped simplify the establishment of a finite element model and improve the efficiency of calculating the seepage of dams. Moreover, an inversion algorithm based on particle swarm optimization and support vector machine was proposed and applied. Comparison of the permeability coefficients produced from the two methods showed minimal difference. On this basis, the seepage field of the dam was analyzed. The analysis and field monitoring data reveal that the proposed algorithm is of high application value, which lays a foundation for future studies on the seepage properties of CFRD with cracks.

Abstract:The seepage calculation of earth rock dam is based on that the anti-seepage body is completely impervious to water in the past .The error of calculated result is inevitable .This paper gave the suspen-ded cutoff wall a reasonable permeability coefficient , and established mathematical model by using finite element method of earth rock dam on infinite deep pervious foundation carried out theoretical calculation . By comparing the two kinds of schemes of suspended cut-off wall ,it conducted seepage calculation and a-nalysis in different depths , and draw the following conclusions that the closer the cut-off wall gets to up-stream, the better the anti-seepage effect.The effective depth of impervious wall is 6~8 times of water depth before dam .

Abstract:Seepage flux is very important in many hydraulic projects such as in the upper reservoir of a pumped storage power station because of its effect on economic benefits. However, upper reservoirs with a relatively high altitude are generally located above the groundwater level; thus, their leakage is difficult to estimate accurately. Here, using steady seepage theory and Darcy’s law, we propose a simplified calculation method to estimate the leakage of slope-wall rock-fill dams with a horizontal blanket. Using a one-dimensional governing equation for unsaturated seepage flows with the assumption of porous continuous media, formulas are derived for calculating the seepage flux of the dam in a steady state with different groundwater levels, which are mainly divided into two situations: those that are lower or higher than the bottom of the horizontal blanket. Then, two engineering examples are developed to assess the proposed method; the relative errors between the analytical results and numerical results are less than 10%. The results obtained from other analytical methods introduced by other researchers are also compared with our numerical results. The comparison results show that the proposed method is reliable and can be used for the estimation of reservoir leakage in situations where rapid results are needed, such as benefit assessments and safety evaluations.

Abstract:The normal use of the finite element method in the analysis of earth and rock-fill dams involves troublesome modifications of the finite element mesh. In the present paper it is pointed out that in problems of steady seepage it is not necessary to determine in the iteration process the entire free surface, but only the elevation of the release point. It is shown by several examples that the proposed method can simplify the seepage analysis to a certain degree, and also give satisfactory results.

Abstract:The problem of seepage control is one of the main factors that affect the stability and safety of earthrock dam. Along with the dam locations with the good geologic condition are gradually decreasing in our country,many dams which will be developed likely locate on the heterogeneous infinite deep pervious foundation. Therefore,the research upon seepage control on earthrock dam built on the heterogeneous infinite deep pervious foundation has more practical significance. In order to reduce the seepage flow as far as possible under the premise of meeting the safe operation of dam,the paper used ABAQUS finite element software to analyze the seepage of micro porous seepage control wall at different depths. When the depth of seepage control wall reaches 10 times as high as upstream water depth,the amount of seepage reduction of dam is not obvious. When depth of the vertical impermeable wall reaches 2 times upstream water depth,the seepage gradient can meet the requirement,the safe operation of earthrock dam is guaranteed.

Abstract:This investigation focused on the three-dimensional (3D) seepage field simulation of an asphaltic concrete core rockfill dam (ACRD) under the design water level conditions. At first, the finite element theory of seepage is introduced in the arid area; then, a hydro-junction projection on the Nuer River in Xinjiang is selected as engineering background, the finite element model of a seepage field of an asphaltic and concrete core rockfill dam under the design water level condition is established, and a boundary condition is determined, and the next distribution of a seepage field of different profiles are plotted, and the monitoring value of different points is compared with the finite element solution; conclusions can be drawn that when the antiseepage system of the dam foundation is good, the water level at the downstream side of the core wall is greatly reduced; for the dam foundation, the effects of reducing head of the cutoff wall are rather obvious, and for the dam body, certain leakage defects at the joint of an impermeable body in the cross sections 0 + 456.5 m and 0 + 540 m can exist. For the dam-around seepage, the hydrogeological condition conforms to the actual conditions. These conclusions can provide great significance for the future design.

Abstract:Siphon drainage using inclined borehole and 4 mm inner diameter pipes is an efficient and stable measure for long-term landslide drainage. In order to compare alternative drainage arrangements more efficiently, a numerical method is proposed for siphon drainage process simulation. The novelty of this method is to simulate the dynamic process of siphon drainage by a series of iterative seepage analyses. The whole drainage process is divided into many small time steps and each one corresponds to an independent seepage analysis. The iterative operation is fully automated by reading and rewriting the calculation document with Python code. The siphon flow rate in each analysis is determined by the total head at the siphon pipe inlet obtained from the previous analysis result. An empirical formula based on experimental data is used for flow rate calculation. SEEP3D is adopted to perform the three-dimensional seepage analysis. BUILD3D along with computer-aided design software is used to build the three-dimensional model with a realistic topographic surface. The proposed method is illustrated and validated with a case, the Shaqiucun landslide, China. A parameter study is carried out and the influence of parameter setting on the drainage effect is discussed.
Anisotropic Seepage Analysis Of A Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dam

Abstract:A significant anisotropy is found in the permeability coefficient of the rockfill of a concrete-faced rockfill darn. A two-dimensional and three-dimensional fixed-mesh FEM seepage analysis is conducted on the Jishixia concrete-faced rockfill dam under both normal and abnormal conditions where a crack occurs in the slab. The FEM meshes were obtained according to the designed schemes and topography of the dam. The seepage field and seepage amount of the dam were calculated. The effect of the crack's location on the seepage is also discussed. The calculation results show that the dam is stable in the seepage aspect under the normal design water level. The position of the crack has a significant effect on the seepage field and seepage amount of the dam.

Abstract:Finite element method (FEM) is usually used in dam and large underground cavern engineering to evaluate complex anti-seepage and drainage systems. In general, the substructure method is used to simulate the drainage hole array, but it becomes cumbersome when the number of drainage holes is large and the model is more complicated. In this study, the drainage holes were simplified and simulated as a line. The calculation results of the proposed method were then compared with those of the substructure simulation method and the well flow formula. This method has approximate accuracy, and it is easier to model with fewer nodes and elements compared with the substructure method. Based on the data of Heihe Reservoir, a three-dimensional equivalent continuum seepage FEM, reflecting the topography and geology of the dam area, was established, along with engineering layout and anti-seepage drainage system. The seepage field of nine different anti-seepage and drainage facilities were studied. The effects of drainage hole spacing and impervious curtain on seepage field were investigated. When the drainage holes were working normally and the drainage hole spacing was 2 m, the phreatic line in the dam body was the lowest and the drainage effect was the best. The analysis results showed that the failure of drainage holes on the left and right banks significantly influenced the seepage discharge of dam body and impervious curtain. According to the distribution of seepage field, a reasonable spacing of drainage holes is selected, and reasonable suggestions are put forward for anti-seepage and drainage in different parts.

Abstract:Implemented, based on practical engineering projects, is a statistical analysis of strata soil characteristics and geological columns sampled from the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China. Furthermore, it was verified under Kolomogorov-Smirnov theory that this assumption, namely, the statistical hypothesis of Gaussian probability distribution for random permeability tensors of soils to be submitted into the stochastic seepage field simulation would be accepted by the statistical testing. By the help of numerical analysis for stochastic seepage fields simulations using three dimensional finite element method as well as the rationality of simulated stochastic results, investigated were various statistical characteristics and random natures in random seepage fields of the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China. Meanwhile, the developed model was also examined through statistical testing. Especially, as a stochastic boundary condition, the random variation of upstream and downstream water level was taken into account of three-dimensional finite element model in practical analysis for the random seepage field simulations, by which, it has been realized deeply to describe disturbed effects of the boundary randomness due to variability of downstream and upstream water level over variabilities of simulated results presented by vector series of the random seepage field. Furthermore, the function of some safeguards to set up against the seepage problem, such as sheet-pile breakwater and catch-water, as the turbulence of complex boundary condition together with the effects of variability of soil permeability has been analyzed for description of influence of them on the hydraulic potential distributed in the random seepage field and the random evolution of stochastic seepage field under these comprehensive aspects has also been compared with the result obtained by determinate analysis for the corresponding steady seepage field problem. Philosophy deduced in this paper presents the necessity, feasibility and practicability of employing stochastic studies in seepage field problems. Meanwhile, sensitivities of random seepage field hydraulic gradient and downstream exit height were studied upon the variation of permeability and boundary conditions of the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China, by which, broadened is the research domain on seepage field evolution under uncertain numerical coverage.

Abstract:Finite difference method (FDM) based on boundary-fitted coordinate (BFC) transformation is presented in this paper. The curvilinear grid system, with computational boundary being coincident with the physical boundary, is numerically obtained by solving the Poisson equation. Seepage analysis can then be done by FDM in a uniform transformed orthogonal coordinate system. The method was applied to analyze the steady seepage in a foundation pit, a lock foundation, and an embankment dam with a free surface. It shows that BFC transformation method can make it easy to fit and update the changeable free surface as well as to closely simulate the physical domain with complex geometrical boundaries.

Abstract:Parallel 2D finite element method for computations of free surface seepage flows is presented in this paper. Computations are carried out by using a cluster of PCs under control of Linux operating system and an MPI library. Preconditioned conjugate gradient method combined with element-by-element strategy is used for solving algebraic equations to reduce storage space and execution time. In order to improve the performance of the cluster, several techniques such as pre-processing and post-processing parallelism and load balance are used. The performance of simulating the free surface seepage flow through a earth dam is analyzed. The experimental results show that the model presented herein not only is reasonable and feasible, but also has expandability and scalability when the large-scale free surface seepage flow through projects is simulated.

Abstract:In this study, we amied to detect the leakage inlets and determine the leakage pathways through a dam, and ensure that the amounts of leakage upstream and downstream are consistent and that there is no leakage around the concrete-face rockfill dam (CFRD). The injection of a pseudo-random current in the water between two aluminum sheets A and B generates a current field that can be measured in water with sensitive current sensors. When the current is channeled along the leakage pathways, the flow-field fitting (FFF) method can be used to detect their inlets. We first review the background equations for the seepage and current fields in the FFF method. Then we use the index-velocity method to calculate the discharge and ensure consistency between the upstream and downstream leakage based on the Doppler effect. Moreover, to illustrate how the FFF method works, we used a numerical simulation to verify the feasibility of the FFF method. Finally, we proceed with a case study in which the FFF method and measured acoustic Doppler velocity (ADV) are used to identify and map potential leakage pathways bypassing upstream into the downstream flow-measurement weir. The proposed methodology successfully detected three leakage areas and obtained the discharge in a case study; our results provide engineering geology information for optimizing the layout of grouting holes.

Abstract:This paper describes the discarding element method of 3D finite element seepage analysis, established corresponding computer program SYSDQ according to the concept of discarding element method, and uses this program to carry out the analysis of one example. The analysis results showed that the calculation results basically tally with the test results. The discarding element method to determine the free surface location could make up insufficiency of the traditional fixed grid method and could ensure the convergence and accuracy of calculation results, which could be used for reference for the similar researches.

Abstract:The upstream cofferdam of the Pinecone Hydropower Station was an upstream earth-rock cofferdam built on the deep overburden layer of upstream foundation pit, which has many characteristics such as big reservoir capacity in front of the cofferdam, deep foundation pit behind the cofferdam and long anti-seepage time. In order to provide reference and a basis for seepage control construction, the sensitivity analysis on permeability coefficients of the seepage control system was made to analyze the seepage characteristics of upstream cofferdam at design water level and to discuss the permissible value range of permeability coefficients. The calculation results show that correct and reasonable seepage control measures are able to realize an effective control of the seepage field. Besides, the engineering design parameters are obtained when the optimization analysis on permeability coefficients meets the seepage control requirements, and thus provide the basis for engineering optimization design.

Abstract:In the light of high density fractured rock mass, which can be equivalent to continuum, a mathematical model for saturated-unsaturated seepage flow in fractured rock mass due to surface infiltration is established in this paper. Finite element method is used as numerical simulation means and a program used to calculate saturated-unsaturated seepage flow due to surface infiltration is worked out. Application of the analysis method in a practical engineering problem is introduced.
