Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the lower bound for the variance of partial sums of strong near-epoch dependent variables under quite weak conditions. By suitably applying this result, we derive the limit behavior of the variance of the partial sums, which is especially useful in studying the large sample properties for econometric time series models with strong near-epoch dependent innovations.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to establish a noncommutative analogue of the Efron--Stein inequality, which bounds the variance of a general function of some independent random variables. Moreover, we state an operator version including random matrices, which extends a result of D. Paulin et al. [Ann. Probab. 44 (2016), no. 5, 3431--3473]. Further, we state a Steele type inequality in the framework of noncommutative probability spaces.

Abstract:For functions of independent random variables, various upper and lower variance bounds are revisited in diverse settings. These are then specialized to the Bernoulli, Gaussian, infinitely divisible cases and to Banach space valued random variables. Frameworks and techniques vary from jackknives through semigroups and beyond. Some new applications are presented, recovering, in particular, all the known estimates on the variance of the length of the longest common subsequences of two random words.

Abstract:An interesting result from the point of view of upper variance bounds is the inequality of Chernoff [Chernoff, H., 1981. A note on an inequality involving the normal distribution. Annals of Probability 9, 533–535]. Namely, that for every absolutely continuous function g with derivative g′ such that Var{|g(ξ)|}<∞, and for standard normal r.v. ξ, Var(|g(ξ)|)≤E{(g′(ξ))2}. Both the usefulness and simplicity of this inequality have generated a great deal of extensions, as well as alternative proofs. Particularly, Olkin and Shepp [Olkin, I., Shepp, L., 2005. A matrix variance inequality. Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference 130, 351–358] obtained an inequality for the covariance matrix of k functions. However, all the previous papers have focused on univariate function and univariate random variable. We provide here a covariance matrix inequality for multivariate function of multivariate normal distribution.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize Slepian’s inequality based on majorization. We obtain some sufficient conditions for ordering results of multivariate normal distributions with different variance vectors and different correlation coefficients. Abstract:Using the error bound results established in the present paper for approximate solutions, we study the stability issues when perturbed by possibly nonaffine smooth maps E for the abstract inequality system F >=(K) 0 defined by a (possible nonclosed) convex cone K and a Frechet differentiable function F satisfying the (extended) weak gamma-condition. We provide some sufficient conditions, in terms of the information at a solution x(0), for ensuring the lower semicontinuity and/or the Lipschitz-like continuity at x(0) of the solution mapping for the perturbed system F + E >=(K) 0 with smooth perturbation E. Explicit upper bounds of the Lipschitz-like moduli are also provided.

Abstract:Lower bounds for variances are often needed to derive central limit theorems. In this paper, we establish a lower bound for the variance of Poisson functionals that uses the difference operator of Malliavin calculus. Poisson functionals, i.e. random variables that depend on a Poisson process, are frequently studied in stochastic geometry. We apply our lower variance bound to statistics of spatial random graphs, the $L^p$ surface area of random polytopes and the volume of excursion sets of Poisson shot noise processes. Thereby we do not only bound variances from below but also show positive definiteness of asymptotic covariance matrices and provide associated results on the multivariate normal approximation.

Abstract:Let $\{X_i,i\geq1\}$ be a sequence of negatively associated random variables, and let $\{X_i^\ast,i\geq 1\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables such that $X_i^\ast$ and $X_i$ have the same distribution for each $i$. Denote by $S_k=\sum_{i=1}^{k}X_i$ and $S_k^\ast=\sum_{i=1}^{k}X_i^\ast$ for $k\geq 1$. The well-known results of Shao \cite{Shao2000} sates that $\mathbb{E}f(S_n)\leq \mathbb{E}f(S_n^\ast)$ for any nondecreasing convex function. Using this very strong property, we obtain a large variety of deviation inequalities for $S_n$

Abstract:The upper bound inequality for variance of weighted sum of correlated random variables is derived according to Cauchy-Schwarz's inequality, while the weights are non-negative with sum of 1. We also give a novel proof with positive semidefinite matrix method. And the variance inequality of sum of correlated random variable with general weights is also obtained. Then, the variance inequalities are applied to the Chebyshev's inequality and sufficient condition of weak law of large numbers (WLLN) for sum of correlated random variables .

Abstract:The Dvoretzky--Kiefer--Wolfowitz--Massart inequality gives a sub-Gaussian tail bound on the supremum norm distance between the empirical distribution function of a random sample and its population counterpart. We provide a short proof of a result that improves the existing bound in two respects. First, our one-sided bound holds without any restrictions on the failure probability, thereby verifying a conjecture of Birnbaum and McCarty (1958). Second, it is local in the sense that it holds uniformly over sub-intervals of the real line with an error rate that adapts to the behaviour of the population distribution function on the interval.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct stronger lower bounds for the variance-based uncertainty relations of two unitary operators, via the power-mean inequalities. It is proved that these bounds are tighter in any interval, compared to the bounds given by Bong et al. (Phys Rev Lett 120:230402, 2018) and by Yu et al. (Phys Rev A 100:022116, 2019). Moreover, we build descending sequences of lower bounds for the uncertainty relations of two or three unitary operators. For illustration, some explicit examples are given to show the tightness of our bounds, in both pure and mixed state cases.
