Abstract:In this note we prove bounds on the upper and lower probability tails of sums of independent geometric or exponentially distributed random variables. We also prove negative results showing that our established tail bounds are asymptotically tight.

Abstract:Consider the problem of approximating the tail probability of randomly weighted sums ∑i=1nΘiXi and their maxima, where {Xi,i≥1} is a sequence of identically distributed but not necessarily independent random variables from the extended regular variation class, and {Θi,i≥1} is a sequence of nonnegative random variables, independent of {Xi,i≥1} and satisfying certain moment conditions. Under the assumption that {Xi,i≥1} has no bivariate upper tail dependence along with some other mild conditions, this paper establishes the following asymptotic relations: Pr(max1≤k≤n∑i=1kΘiXi>x)∼Pr(∑i=1nΘiXi>x)∼∑i=1nPr(ΘiXi>x), and Pr(max1≤k<∞∑i=1kΘiXi>x)∼Pr(∑i=1∞ΘiXi+>x)∼∑i=1∞Pr(ΘiXi>x), as x→∞. Abstract:In this paper, we consider the random sums of one type of asymptotically quadrant sub-independent and identically distributed random variables {X, X i , i = 1, 2, ⋯ } with consistently varying tails. We obtain the asymptotic behavior of the tail $\textsf{P}(X_1+\cdots+X_\eta>x)$ under different cases of the interrelationships between the tails of X and η, where η is an integer-valued random variable independent of {X, X i , i = 1, 2, ⋯ }. We find out that the asymptotic behavior of $\textsf{P}(X_1+\cdots+X_\eta>x)$ is insensitive to the dependence assumed in the present paper. We state some applications of the asymptotic results to ruin probabilities in the compound renewal risk model under dependent risks. We also state some applications to a compound collective risk model under the Markov environment.

Nearly Tight Universal Bounds for the Binomial Tail Probabilities

Abstract:We derive simple but nearly tight upper and lower bounds for the binomial lower tail probability (with straightforward generalization to the upper tail probability) that apply to the whole parameter regime. These bounds are easy to compute and are tight within a constant factor of 89/44. Moreover, they are asymptotically tight in the regimes of large deviation and moderate deviation. By virtue of a surprising connection with Ramanujan's equation, we also provide strong evidences suggesting that the lower bound is tight within a factor of 1.26434. It may even be regarded as the natural lower bound, given its simplicity and appealing properties. Our bounds significantly outperform the familiar Chernoff bound and reverse Chernoff bounds known in the literature and may find applications in various research areas.

Under very mild conditions for the innovation, we obtain several asymptotic results for the partial sums including basic asymptotics and strong limit theorems. The fact that the asymptotic properties differ strikingly in a neighbour of a critical point makes the model very interesting.

Abstract:The tail probability inequalities for the sum of independent unbounded random variables on a probability space (Ω, T, P) were studied and a new method was proposed to treat the sum of independent unbounded random variables by truncating the original probability space (Ω, T, P). The probability exponential inequalities for sums of independent unbounded random variables were given. As applications of the results, some interesting examples were given. The examples show that the method proposed in the paper and the results of the paper are quite useful in the study of the large sample properties of the sums of independent unbounded random variables.

Abstract:This paper is the Part II of a serious work about T product tensors focusing at establishing new probability bounds for sums of random, independent, T product tensors. These probability bounds characterize large deviation behavior of the extreme eigenvalue of the sums of random T product tensors. We apply Lapalace transform method and Lieb concavity theorem for T product tensors obtained from our Part I paper, and apply these tools to generalize the classical bounds associated with the names Chernoff, and Bernstein from the scalar to the T product tensor setting. Tail bounds for the norm of a sum of random rectangular T product tensors are also derived from corollaries of random Hermitian T product tensors cases. The proof mechanism is also applied to T product tensor valued martingales and T product tensor based Azuma, Hoeffding and McDiarmid inequalities are derived.

On Dimension-free Tail Inequalities for Sums of Random Matrices and Applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new framework to obtain tail inequalities for sums of random matrices. Compared with existing works, our tail inequalities have the following characteristics: 1) high feasibility--they can be used to study the tail behavior of various matrix functions, e.g., arbitrary matrix norms, the absolute value of the sum of the sum of the $j$ largest singular values (resp. eigenvalues) of complex matrices (resp. Hermitian matrices); and 2) independence of matrix dimension --- they do not have the matrix-dimension term as a product factor, and thus are suitable to the scenario of high-dimensional or infinite-dimensional random matrices. The price we pay to obtain these advantages is that the convergence rate of the resulting inequalities will become slow when the number of summand random matrices is large. We also develop the tail inequalities for matrix random series and matrix martingale difference sequence. We also demonstrate usefulness of our tail bounds in several fields. In compressed sensing, we employ the resulted tail inequalities to achieve a proof of the restricted isometry property when the measurement matrix is the sum of random matrices without any assumption on the distributions of matrix entries. In probability theory, we derive a new upper bound to the supreme of stochastic processes. In machine learning, we prove new expectation bounds of sums of random matrices matrix and obtain matrix approximation schemes via random sampling. In quantum information, we show a new analysis relating to the fractional cover number of quantum hypergraphs. In theoretical computer science, we obtain randomness-efficient samplers using matrix expander graphs that can be efficiently implemented in time without dependence on matrix dimensions.

Abstract:The asymptotic tail behaviour of sums of independent subexponential random variables is well understood, one of the main characteristics being the principle of the single big jump. We study the case of dependent subexponential random variables, for both deterministic and random sums, using a fresh approach, by considering conditional independence structures on the random variables. We seek sufficient conditions for the results of the theory with independent random variables still to hold. For a subexponential distribution, we introduce the concept of a boundary class of functions, which we hope will be a useful tool in studying many aspects of subexponential random variables. The examples we give in the paper demonstrate a variety of effects owing to the dependence, and are also interesting in their own right.

Abstract:Let $X$ be an $n\times n$ symmetric random matrix with independent but non-identically distributed entries. The deviation inequalities of the spectral norm of $X$ with Gaussian entries have been obtained by using the standard concentration of Gaussian measure results. This paper establishes an upper tail bound of the spectral norm of $X$ with sub-Exponential entries. Our method relies upon a crucial ingredient of a novel chaining argument that essentially involves both the particular structure of the sets used for the chaining and the distribution of coordinates of a point on the unit sphere.

Abstract:We study distributions $F$ on $[0,\infty)$ such that for some $T\le\infty$, $F^{*2}(x,x+T]\sim 2 F(x,x+T]$. The case $T=\infty$ corresponds to $F$ being subexponential, and our analysis shows that the properties for $T<\infty$ are, in fact, very similar to this classical case. A parallel theory is developed in the presence of densities. Applications are given to random walks, the key renewal theorem, compound Poisson process and Bellman-Harris branching processes.
