Abstract:We develop a novel decoupling inequality for nonhomogeneous order 2 non-Gaussian chaoses. Having this decoupling inequality, we show two types of the p-th moment bounds for the suprema of a log-concave-tailed chaos process based on some chaining techniques and the generalized majorizing measure theorems for canonical processes. As applications, we show the restricted isometry property of partial random circulant matrices and time-frequency structured random matrices induced by standard α-subexponential vectors, 1≤α≤ 2, which extends the previously known results for the sub-Gaussian case.

Abstract:An interesting result from the point of view of upper variance bounds is the inequality of Chernoff [Chernoff, H., 1981. A note on an inequality involving the normal distribution. Annals of Probability 9, 533–535]. Namely, that for every absolutely continuous function g with derivative g′ such that Var{|g(ξ)|}<∞, and for standard normal r.v. ξ, Var(|g(ξ)|)≤E{(g′(ξ))2}. Both the usefulness and simplicity of this inequality have generated a great deal of extensions, as well as alternative proofs. Particularly, Olkin and Shepp [Olkin, I., Shepp, L., 2005. A matrix variance inequality. Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference 130, 351–358] obtained an inequality for the covariance matrix of k functions. However, all the previous papers have focused on univariate function and univariate random variable. We provide here a covariance matrix inequality for multivariate function of multivariate normal distribution.

Abstract:In this article we investigate conditions by a unified method under which the covariances of functions of two adjacent ordered random variables are nonnegative. The main structural results are applied to several kinds of ordered random variable, such as delayed record values, continuous and discrete ℓ∞⩽-spherical order statistics, epoch times of mixed Poisson processes, generalized order statistics, discrete weak record values, and epoch times of modified geometric processes. These applications extend the main results for ordinary order statistics in Qi [28] and for usual record values in Nagaraja and Nevzorov [25].

Abstract:We obtain the best possible upper bounds for the moments of a single order statistic from independent, non-negative random variables, in terms of the population mean. The main result covers the independent identically distributed case. Furthermore, the case of the sample minimum for merely independent (not necessarily identically distributed) random variables is treated in detail. We consider the moments of maxn≥1|Sn|/2nloglogn. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the moments to be finite are given. As an application, we obtain the law of the iterated logarithm for moving average processes of independent and identically distributed random variables.

Abstract:Let {X_ni, 1 ≤ i ≤ m_n, n≥ 1} be an array of independent random variables with uniform distribution on [0, θ _n] , and {X_n(k), k=1, 2, … , m_n} be the k th order statistics of the random variables {X_ni, 1 ≤ i ≤ m_n} . We study the limit properties of ratios {R_nij=X_n(j)/X_n(i), 1≤ i < j ≤ m_n} for fixed sample size m_n=m based on their moment conditions. For 1=i < j ≤ m , we establish the weighted law of large numbers, the complete convergence, and the large deviation principle, and for 2=i < j ≤ m , we obtain some classical limit theorems and self-normalized limit theorems.

Abstract:We provide an elementary proof of the lower bound for the variance of continuous unimodal distributions and obtain analogous bounds for the higher order central moments. A lower bound for the rth central moment of discrete distribution is given and compared favorably with a related bound for discrete unimodal distribution in literature.

Abstract:By utilizing the properties of positive definite matrices, mathematical expectations, and positive linear functionals in matrix space, the Kantorovich inequality and Wielandt inequality for positive definite matrices and random variables are obtained. Some novel Kantorovich type inequalities pertaining to matrix ordinary products, Hadamard products, and mathematical expectations of random variables are provided. Furthermore, several interesting unified and generalized forms of the Wielandt inequality for positive definite matrices are also studied. These derived inequalities are then exploited to establish an inequality regarding various correlation coefficients and study some applications in the relative efficiency of parameter estimation of linear statistical models.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove asymptotic formulas of mixed moments of $\rm GL(2)$ and its symmetric square $L$-functions for both Hecke--Maass cusp forms and holomorphic Hecke eigenforms in short intervals. As an application, we prove quantitative simultaneous non-vanishing of central values of these $L$-functions.

A Markovian Gauß\, Inequality for Asymmetric Deviations from the Mode of Symmetric Unimodal Distributions

Abstract:For a random variable with a unimodal distribution and finite second moment Gauß\, (1823) proved a sharp bound on the probability of the random variable to be outside a symmetric interval around its mode. An alternative proof for it is given based on Khintchine's representation of unimodal random variables. Analogously, a sharp inequality is proved for the slightly broader class of unimodal distributions with finite first absolute moment, which might be called a Markovian Gauß inequality. For symmetric unimodal distributions with finite second moment Semenikhin (2019) generalized Gauß's inequality to arbitrary intervals. For the class of symmetric unimodal distributions with finite first absolute moment we construct a Markovian version of it. Related inequalities of Volkov (1969) and Sellke and Sellke (1997) will be discussed as well.

Abstract:Let $\Lambda_X(s)=\det(I-sX^{\dagger})$ be the characteristic polynomial of the unitary matrix $X$. It is believed that the distribution of values of $\Lambda_X(s)$ model the distribution of values of the Riemann zeta-function $\zeta(s)$. This principle motivates many avenues of study. Of particular interest is the behavior of $\Lambda_X'(s)$ and the distribution of its zeros (all of which lie inside or on the unit circle). In this article we present several identities for the moments of $\Lambda_X'(s)$ averaged over $U(N)$, for $x \in \mathbb{C}$ as well as specialized to $|x|=1$. Additionally, we prove, for positive integer $k$, that the polynomial $\int_{U(N)} |\Lambda_X(1)|^{2k} dX$ of degree $k^2$ in $N$ divides the polynomial $\int_{U(N)} |\Lambda_X'(1)|^{2k} dX$ which is of degree $k^2+2k$ in $N$ and that the ratio, $f(N,k)$, of these moments factors into linear factors modulo $4k-1$ if $4k-1$ is prime. We also discuss the relationship of these moments to a solution of a second order non-linear Painléve differential equation. Finally we give some formulas in terms of the $_3F_2$ hypergeometric series for the moments in the simplest case when $N=2$, and also study the radial distribution of the zeros of $\Lambda_X'(s)$ in that case.

Covariance Identities and Variance Bounds for Infinitely Divisible Random Variables and Their Applications

Abstract:In this article, we establish a general covariance identity for infinitely divisible distributions (IDD). Using this result, we derive Cacoullos type variance bounds for the IDD. Applications to some important distributions are discussed, in addition to the computation of variance bounds for certain posterior distributions. As another application, we derive the Stein-type identity for the IDD, which involves the L'evy measure. This result in turn is used to derive the Stein-type identity for the CGMY distributions and the variance-gamma distributions (VGD). This approach, especially for the VGD is new and simpler, compared to the ones available in the literature. Finally, as another nontrivial application, we apply the covariance identity in deriving known and some new formulas for the weighted premium calculation principles (WPCP) and Gini coefficient for the IDD.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a $p$-th moment bound for the suprema of a log-concave-tailed nonhomogeneous chaos process, which is optimal in some special cases. A crucial ingredient of the proof is a novel decoupling inequality, which may be of independent interest. With this $p$-th moment bound, we show two uniform Hanson-Wright type deviation inequalities for $\alpha$-subexponential entries ($1\le \alpha\le 2$), which recover some known results. As applications, we prove the restricted isometry property of partial random circulant matrices and time-frequency structured random matrices induced by standard $\alpha$-subexponential vectors ($1\le \alpha\le 2$), which extends the previously known results for the subgaussian case.
