Abstract:By experimental and density functional theory (DFT) methods, we investigated the effect of Mn on the carburization of the Fe3O4 catalysts in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. Freshly prepared MnxFe3-xO4 (x = 0, 0.27 and 1) nanoparticles as representative model bulk FTS catalysts were carburized by exposing to syngas. The oxide nanoparticles and the corresponding carburized samples were then characterized using XRD, XPS, TEM and MES. To mimic the experiments, a slab modelling the Fe3O4(311) surface doped with different number of Mn atoms were constructed in the DFT calculations. Our results showed that Mn doping hindered the carburization of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and stabilizes the reduction intermediate at FeO. This is attributed to the enhanced affinity of O atoms in the presence of Mn-dopant, making removal of O difficult. The work provides guidance for catalysts design and activation for FTS process.
The effect of ferromagnetism on the CO activation over FCC crystal phase transition metal catalysts: Insights from DFT calculations

Abstract:In order to understand the relationship between the ferromagnetism and catalytic performance, three pathways of CO activation over transition metal catalysts (Co, Ni, Cu, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au) have been studied by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is shown that Co and Ni metal catalysts have better catalytic performance for CO activation than others. The density of states (DOS) and spin density plots reveal that Co and Ni metal possess ferromagnetism. So it is concluded that the catalytic activity connects with the metal ferromagnetism. To further confirm this deduction, the magnetic moments and Bader charge have been calculated when small molecules (CO, CHO, and COH) adsorbed on the Co and Ni metal surface, and the results shows that the electron transfer between the small molecules and metal catalysts happens on the unpaired d-orbital electrons (nd) of the metal, which changes the magnetic moments of Co and Ni metal. Meanwhile, electron transfer also changes the catalytic performance of Co and Ni metal catalysts. Compared with the CO, the electron transfer of CHO and COH is more, the magnetic moments of metal changes greatly, and the carbon-oxygen bonds of CHO and COH are easier to break. So the magnetic moments of metal catalysts can be used as an indicator to select different metal catalysts.

Abstract:Biomass is a renewable and potentially carbon-neutral energy source and can be a promising alternative to fossil fuels in the ironmaking industry. The co-carbonization technology of biomass and coal for high-quality biofuel production has great potential. This study investigated the effects of the addition of magnetite (Fe3O4) on the physicochemical properties and combustion performance of wood shavings (WS) and bituminous coal (BC) (WS/ BC = 4/6) sintered with a carbon-based synfuel. The results indicate that increasing the proportion of 2 wt% Fe3O4 can increase the high calorific value to 34.60 MJ kg- 1 and the maximum combustion rate temperature reaches 469 degrees C, however, increasing the proportion decreases the burnout temperature to 575 degrees C, and the activation energy of the rapid pyrolysis stage decreases to 43.54 kJ mol- 1. In addition, the activation energies of WS/BC char in the fast co-pyrolysis stage and the combustion reaction decrease significantly to 43.54 kJ mol- 1 and 92.96 kJ mol- 1, respectively, with the addition of 2 wt% Fe3O4. The area ratio of the fitted aromatic C-O reaches 79.91 %. Fe3O4 can form active centers on the surface of a carbon-based synfuel, improving the stability and orderliness of the fuel. The catalysis of the Fe3O4 additive with macromolecular organic compounds involves mainly oxygen-containing functional groups, promoting the cleavage of C-C bonds connected to oxygencontaining functional groups. In general, these results provide certain theoretical guidance for the preparation and application of sintered carbon-based synfuels.

Abstract:Metal-doping graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a potential catalyst for the Fenton-like reaction. Selecting an appropriate supporter for this material is essential to improve its catalytic ability and lower the costs. Three common supporters, graphite, activated carbon, and SBA-15, were employed to investigate their effects on the catalyst structure and performances. Results show that graphite could increase the active Fe N centers due to geometric effects and promote the electron transfer by pi-pi stacking, and therefore, the Fe-doping g-C3N4/graphite (FegN/G) composite displayed excellent catalytic ability for the bisphenol A (BPA) removal. In addition, magnetic catalyst was further fabricated through a simple coprecipitation method using Fe3O4 and chitosan-Fe hydrogel. The magnetic catalyst kept in dozens of micrometer size range as well as high activity for the Fenton reaction. Hydroxyl radicals were generated during the reaction process, and 99.9% of the original BPA was therefore degraded and mineralized in 1 h. More importantly, it also exhibits a good reusability and stability, as well as a quick separation performance from the solution when using a magnet, indicating that this magnetic FegN/G composite would be a promising Fenton-like catalyst in practical applications.
The influence of Co on the magnetic properties of Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu system

Abstract:With development of electric device with high running frequency and large power, classical Finemet alloys are not able to meet their requirements. In order to enhance its saturation magnetization, Fe79.5-xCoxSi6B12Cu1Nb1.5(x = 0, 5, 10 and 15) alloys with good amorphous forming ability had been designed. Furthermore, the strategy of optimizing annealing process was used to enhance the magnetic performance. Results show that when Co atoms entered into nanocrystalline grains in amorphous matrix, the saturation magnetization will enhance from 1.5T to 1.64T with the increase of Co content from 0 at. % to 5 at. %. The annealing temperature window can be widened by about 10K with increasing content of Co. The grain size for alloys with annealed at 823K for 5min is reduced from 40 nm of x = 0-31 nm of x = 5. After optimizing the annealing process, Fe74.5Co5Si6B12Cu1Nb1.5 shows very good saturation magnetization up to M-s = 1.64T, higher than Finemet classical system. Furthermore, the nucleation mechanism and grain growth are investigated to deeply understand the influences factors of magnetic properties. Kinetics of non-isothermal crystallization was also used to take a close look at the relationship between annealing temperature and grain size, which can guide future experiment or industrial production.

Abstract:The commercial application of cobalt-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) suffers from catalyst deactivation. One of the main deactivation mechanisms under industrial conditions is sintering. In this work, we explored the role of manganese oxide as a structural promoter against sintering in a carbon nanofiber supported cobalt model catalyst. We employed in situ Mössbauer emission spectroscopy to study cobalt sintering in synthesis gas as a function of the steam partial pressure, which mimics high CO conversion during FTS. Steam accelerates the sintering of non-promoted metallic cobalt particles. Model experiments point to a synergistic effect between carbon monoxide and steam on cobalt sintering. In the mangense-promoted case, sintering is significantly reduced, indicative of the structural stabilization of small cobalt particles by manganese oxide. Nevertheless, a fraction of cobalt particles in close interaction with manganese oxide carburized under these conditions, resulting in a lower catalytic activity.

Diverse Effects of Ferromagnetic-Paramagnetic Phase Transition on the Activity and Selectivity of Ferromagnetic Catalysts

Abstract:Tuning the catalyst's activity and selectivity is usually achieved by modifying the electronic structure through strategies such as alloying, doping, strain, and ligand modification, but inevitably accompanied by geometric structure changes of catalysts. It is challenging to modify a catalyst's electronic structure without changing its geometric structure. Recent studies found that the second-order ferromagnetic to paramagnetic (FM-PM) phase transition could promote catalytic performance without altering the geometric structures of active sites, which was also known as the magneto-catalytic effect (MCE). However, the understanding of the MCE is still incomplete. Herein, we conducted systematic density functional theory (DFT) calculations to clarify the complex reaction mechanisms for conversions of nitrogen-containing small molecules on both FM and PM Ni (111) surfaces. Our microkinetic modeling (MKM) results demonstrate that FM-PM phase transition promotes the N2O decomposition activity of FM Ni catalyst but decreases its activity for NO decomposition while showing a negligible influence on the activity of ammonia decomposition. These results indicate the promotion, inhibition, and disappearance mechanisms of MCE on the catalytic activity, which further changes the selectivity of different products. We anticipate the MCE will work as an effective strategy for fine-tuning the activity and selectivity of ferromagnetic catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis, providing an extra basis for rational catalyst design.

Abstract:The sintering of nanostructured catalysts poses a grand challenge in understanding the complex mechanism in the experimental phenomena, as well as the structure-activity relationship. Here, we systematically investigate the structure-activity relationship of sintered Fe-based catalysts, including Fe2C, Fe5C2, Fe3C and pure Fe, in the CO activation by reactive molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the sintering structures can promote the turn-over frequency of Fe3C compared with its un-sintered near-size structures, which might be attributed to the formation of low-coordination-number atoms. The change of surface area shows a similar trend for FexCy and pure Fe, and its increased magnitude varies with the content of carbon in the FexCy bulk. For size effect, the Fe2C displays the largest turn-over frequency for the 4.34 nm particle. The CO2 formation mechanism has also been compared for different FexCy, which may provide critical theoretical insights for industrial reduction of CO2 emission.

Abstract:The effects of the substitution of Fe by Co or Ni on both the structure and the magnetic properties of FeB amorphous alloy were investigated using first-principle molecular dynamics. The pair distribution function, Voronoi polyhedra, and density of states of Fe80−xTMxB20 (x = 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 at.%, TM(Transition Metal): Co, Ni) amorphous alloys were calculated. The results show that with the increase in Co content, the saturation magnetization of Fe80−xCoxB20 (x = 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 at.%) amorphous alloys initially increases and then decreases upon reaching the maximum at x = 10 at.%, while for Fe80−xNixB20 (x = 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 at.%), the saturation magnetization decreases monotonously with the increase in Ni content. Accordingly, for the two kinds of amorphous alloys, the obtained simulation results on the variation trends of the saturation magnetization with the change in alloy composition are in good agreement with the experimental observation. Furthermore, the relative maximum magnetic moment was recorded for Fe70Co10B20 amorphous alloy, due to the induced increased magnetic moments of the Fe atoms surrounding the Co atom in the case of low Co dopant, as well as the increase in the exchange splitting energy caused by the enhancement of local atomic symmetry.

Abstract:Bimetallic NiFe catalysts have emerged as a promising alternative to the traditional Ni catalysts for CO2 methanation. However, the promoting effect of Fe on the bimetallic catalysts remains ambiguous. In this study, a series of NiFe catalysts derived from hydrotalcite precursors were investigated. In situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that small NiFe alloy particles were formed and remained stable during reaction. When Fe/Ni=0.25, the alloy catalysts exhibited the highest CO2 conversion, CH4 selectivity and stability in CO2 methanation at low temperature of 250-350 oC. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) study indicated that the formate pathway was the most plausible reaction scheme on both Ni and NiFe alloy catalysts, while a moderate addition of Fe facilitated the activation of CO2 via hydrogenation to *HCOO. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrated that the overall energy barrier for CH4 formation was lower on the alloy surface.

Abstract:The size, distribution, and morphology of TiC particle in Fe–Ti–C system have a great influence on the mechanical properties of TiC/Fe composites. In this work, TiC/Fe composites were fabricated in the Fe–Ti–C system with different carbon source and molar ratio by combustion synthesis and hot-pressing method. Morphology and size of ceramic particles, as well as microstructure, interface bonding and mechanical properties of composites were compared. The results showed that the size of TiC particles decreased with increase of Fe content of Fe–Ti–C systems fabricated by the same carbon source, while the particles change from spherical shapes to cubic shapes which can reduce stress concentration between ceramic particles and matrix. Furthermore, TiC/Fe composites fabricated by 5Fe–Ti-carbon blacks (CBs) system exhibited superior yield strength (1523 MPa) compressive strength (2203 MPa) and microhardness (691.5 HV), caused by the high interface bonding strength and lamellar pearlite matrix which can commendably limit the dislocation slip. By comparison, TiC/Fe composites fabricated by 21Fe–Ti-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) system showed higher fracture strain (25.85%) on account of the ferrite matrix with favorable plastic. This work reveals the influence of carbon source and molar ratio of Fe–Ti–C system on TiC/Fe composites, which is helpful to further improve the properties of TiC/Fe composites.

Abstract:Molybdenum carbides were prepared under different carburization conditions. The role of carburization protocol was studied while their CO hydrogenating performances were evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor at 280°C, 3.1MPa, and H2/CO=2.0. The structure of the carbides mainly depended on the type and concentration of carbon source while the crystallite size depended on carbon source and temperature. The surface area, morphology and surface carbon deposition phenomenon of the carbides were sensitive to heating rate and holding time other than the above factors. Though the bulk structure was the same at a carburization temperature range from 630 to 760°C, the carburization degree of the carbides was changing continuously. This diversity led the bond strength of molecular adsorbed CO weaken at a higher carburization temperature while the adsorptive strength of H2 was hardly changed. Both the adsorptive quantities of CO and H2 followed the same trend, with the highest amount on the carbide prepared at 630°C. The activities of the catalysts correlated well with their adsorptive quantities of CO and H2, and the product selectivity was related to their hydrogenation capacity.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Fe50Co25Ni15X10 (X = Bamorphous, Bcrystalline, and Si) powdered alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying process. Morphological, microstructural, and structural characterizations of the powders milled several times were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The final crystallographic state strongly depends on the chemical composition and the grinding time; it can be single-phase or two-phase. The crystallite size reduction down the nanometer scale is accompanied by the introduction of high level of lattice strains. The dissolution of Co, Ni, B (amorphous and crystalline), and Si into the α-Fe lattice leads to the formation of highly disordered Fe-based solid solutions. Coercivity (Hc) and the saturation magnetization (Ms) of alloyed powders were measured at room temperature by a vibration sample magnetization. The magnetic measurements show a contrasting Ms and (Hc) in all alloy compositions. Conclusively, soft magnetic properties of nanocrystalline alloys are related to various factors such as metalloid addition, formed phases, and chemical compositions.

Abstract:A series of alumina supported nickel/iron catalysts with different active metal compositions were prepared by the deposition-precipitation method, and the carbon nanofiber (CNF) was catalyticly grown on the above catalysts at 600degreesC by using CO/H-2 mixture as a carbon source. The catalytic activity was stable after 36 hours on stream, and the presence of Fe in the catalyst promoted the growth of CNF. The formed CNF diameter distribution was narrow in the range of 20 similar to 50 nm. The HRTEM result showed that the angle between the CNF axis and the graphite layer increased with the increase of Fe content. The TPO result indicated that the graphitization degree of the CNF depended on the active metal composition. The yield and microstructure of CNF changed with the active metal composition, which was attributed to the surface reaction between CO and active metal (alloy) together with the carbon diffusion mode on/in the metal particle.

Abstract:When Fe atoms in Fe–Nb–B amorphous alloy are partially substituted by Co atoms, a decrease of thermal stability of the alloy is investigated. The primary crystallization temperature decreases with the increase of the content of Cobalt. The activation energy of Co-doped Fe–Nb–B alloy is lowered, too. Magnetic measurements show that, both the specific saturation of magnetization and the coercivity of Co-doped Fe–Nb–B nanocrystalline alloys are increased. The increase of specific saturation of magnetization can be attributed to the forming of nano-sized α-FeCo grains, while the increase of coercivity is due to both the higher magnetic crystalline anisotropy of Cobalt atoms and the enhanced pinning effect to the domain walls resulting from the residual of Cobalt atoms on the interface of the α-FeCo grains and amorphous matrix.

Abstract:Impacts of H-2/CO ratios on both the bulky and surface compositions of an iron-manganese based catalyst were investigated by XRD, MES, N-2-physisorption, XPS and LRS. Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis performances were studied in a slurry-phase continuously stirred tank reactor. The characterization results showed that the fresh catalyst was comprised of the hematite, which was converted firstly to Fe3O4, and then carburized to iron carbides in both the bulk and surface regions under different H-2/CO ratios atmosphere. Pretreatment in lower H-2/CO ratio facilitated the formation of iron carbides on the surface of magnetite and surface carbonaceous species. During the F-T synthesis reaction, the catalyst reduced in lower H-2/CO ratio presented higher catalytic activity, which is assigned probably to the formation of more iron carbides (especially for chi-Fe5C2) on the surface of magnetite. Carburized cobalt catalyst for the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis

Abstract:Catalysts with Co, Co 3 C, and Co 2 C phases are synthesized by controlling the carburization time. The catalyst with Co 3 C phase exhibits the highest activity in FTS reaction. DFT calculations reveal the high intrinsic activity of Co 3 C.

Abstract:Catalytic graphitization of carbon laminations was carried out using mesocarbon microbeads as the matrix precursor. Aqueous tape casting was used to prepare the carbon laminations, which were doped separately with Ti, ZrO2 and B4C powders. After sintering at 1400 °C in a vacuum, these dopants were found to enhance the degree of graphitization and improve the properties of the laminations. Ti was the most effective catalyst of the three dopants. The effects of binary dopants on the graphitization process and properties of the resulting laminations were also tested, but the catalytic effect of binary dopants was found to be less than that shown by single additives.
