Abstract:The origin and development of air-cooled Mn-series bainite steels are introduced. The invented idea, strengthening-toughening mechanism, mechanical performances, development and application of this kind of steel including granular bainitic steels, FGBA / BG duplex steels, CFB/M duplex steels, medium carbon bainite/martensite steels, cast bainitic steels are presented. The invented idea mechanical performances, development and application of second generation of Mn-series bainitic steels, i.e. water-quenched Mn-series bainitic steels invented by the authors newly are introduced. The water quenched Mn-series bainitic steels can meet the performance requirements of most steels used in engineering structure, reduce the amount of alloying content, increase harden capability and improve weldability. It should be pointed out that the application of both air-cold and water- quenched Mn-series bainitic steels are complementary and mutually reinforcing. Some newest technology of Mn-series bainitic steels in China are discussed in this paper. It is suggested that the significance of the development of the Mn-series bainitic steels can be summarized as: significantly reducing costs of both raw materials and production; good combination of strength and toughness; excellent weldability; simple procedure; large savings in energy resources and environmental pollution is reduced.

Abstract:High‐strength bainite steels have been a hot topic in the last decade. In this review, the development of heat treatment technology and surface modification technology of high‐strength bainite steels is introduced. The future research direction of high‐strength bainite steels is prospected based on the current research status and application performance requirements. Bainite steels with high strength, high toughness, and excellent wear resistance are gradually used in railway crossing, rail and wind power bearing, and other fields. The rapid development of modern industry has made the service environment of bainite steel in the heavy industry more and more harsh, which requires not only good overall performance of bainite steel matrix but also excellent surface properties. A lot of research work has been carried out to improve the properties of the bainite steel matrix and surface. In this review, the development of heat treatment technology of high‐strength bainite steels is introduced, including austempering above and below martensite starting temperature, continuous cooling, and multistep austempering processes. Afterward, the surface modification technology of high‐strength bainite steel is summarized emphatically, including carburizing, surface alloying, laser cladding, and integrated strengthening technology. Finally, the future research direction of high‐strength bainite steel is prospected based on the current research status and application performance requirements.

Abstract:The present report makes an attempt to review some studies by Chinese researchers on bainite in steel from the viewpoint of thermodynamics, kinetics, crystallography, microstructure, mechanism, etc. Due to the complexity of bainite transformation in steels, the extensive disagreement between the diffusion school and the shear school on bainite formation are discussed. A sympathetic nucleation and diffusion controlled ledgewise growth mechanism rather than shear mechanism is favored by the authors. Nevertheless, some further works are still necessary for a full understanding of various bainite with different composition and morphology.

Abstract:The main research results about the mechanism of bainite formation are described as follows: (1) Bainite in steel is of ultra-fine structure; (2) Surface relief of bainite is produced only by the deformation of the growing bainitic ferrite; furthermore, surface relief of a single smallest structural unit is tent-shaped rather than invariant-plane-strain-typed; (3) 3-dimensional superledges appear on the broad face of bainite ferrite and the austenite (335) plane of the structural units of bainitic sheaves is reasoned to be a diffusional interface, which indicates the growth of lower bainite by a diffusion process; (4) The bainite carbide nucleates in the gamma side of alpha/gamma interface and grows toward austenite; (5) Sympathetic nucleation-ledgewise growth model of bainite suggested on the base of the experiment data was proved by theoretical calculation.

Abstract:Many experimental and calculation results for bainite transformation in steels have been obtained by diffusional and displacive mechanism holders recently. The arguments of the two viewpoints mainly focus on following aspects: partition of carbon and substitutional atoms in the process of bainite transformation, nucleation and overall kinetics, morphology and crystallography. The new results of bainite transformation in steels are summarized and analyzed briefly. It is suggested that bainite transformation mechanism may relate to following factors: alloy composition and isothermal holding temperature. More attention should be focused on the effects of transformation temperature and alloy composition on bainite transformation mechanism.

Abstract:A comparison study is performed on the heat-treatment processes of a new bainitic steel containing Al used for railway crossing. Microstructures and properties obtained by air cooling, fast cooling before bainite transformation starting temperature(BS) followed by air cooling and isothermal quenching are analyzed. Results show that the microstructure obtained by isothermal quenching is the finest and possesses the best comprehensive properties. However, higher production cost is caused by isothermal quenching and it is not available in actual production limited by the large size of railway crossing. Based on the character of isothermal quenching process, a three-step cooling method is designed, which consists of fast cooling before BS point, then slow cooling in furnace between BS and martensite transformation starting temperature(MS) and eventually followed by air cooling. It is found that the microstructure, strength and toughness obtained by the three-step cooling method are almost the same as that of isothermal quenching. The cooling curves of the bulk samples close to the actual size of rail crossing under different cooling ways are measured and find that oil cooling can achieve the required cooling rate and easy to realize in actual production.

Abstract:Microstructure of two kinds of low-carbon alloyed steels after quenching,isothermal quenching and normalizing was studied with colored metallography-chemico-etching method.Using the image processing system,the fraction of the bainite phase was calculated.With XRD method,the content of the residual austenite was examined.At last,the martensite phase content was obtained.The results show that it is feasible to analyze the multiple phases quantitatively of the bainite steel using the colored metallographic technology.

Abstract:The 70Si3Mn steel is one of the traditional spring steels to which conventional heat?treatment involves oil quenching and medium?temperature tempering to obtain the troostite microstructure.In this paper the 70Si3Mn steel was treated by austempering to obtain the carbide?free bainite microstructure.The microstructures and mechanical properties of the steel were investigated.The re?sults show that the carbide?free bainite microstructure could be formed in the 70Si3Mn steel by the austempering at a temperature range of Ms+10~30℃ which consists of a lath?like bainite ferrite with a average thickness of 160 nm and a film?like retained aus?tenite.Excellent mechanical properties are exhibited for the steel such as high strength and hardness high plasticity and toughness as well as good wear resistance.

Abstract:Bearings are the most important component of nearly all mechanical equipment, as they guarantee the steady running of the equipment, which is especially important for high-end equipment such as high-speed trains and shield tunneling machines. Requirements regarding the quality of bearings are increasing with the rapid development in technology. A country’s bearings manufacturing level directly reflects the level of that country’s steel metallurgy and machinery manufacturing. The performance of the bearing steel is the critical factor that determines the quality of a bearing. The development of new bearing steel with higher performance is the ambition of material researchers and the expectation of the manufacturing industry. Many famous bearing manufacturing enterprises are competing to develop the new generation of bearing steel. Nanostructured bainitic bearing steel (NBBS), which is a newly developed bearing steel, not only possesses high strength and toughness, but also exhibits excellent wear resistance and rolling contact fatigue (RCF) resistance. In recent years, relevant achievements in NBBS in China have led to significant progress in this field. NBBS was first used in China to manufacture large bearings for wind turbines and heavy-duty bearings, with excellent performance. As a result, NBBS and its corresponding heat-treatment process have been included in the national and industry standards for the first time. The bearing industry considers the exploitation of NBBS to be epoch-making, and has termed this kind of bearing as the second generation of bainitic bearing. In this paper, the development of NBBS is reviewed in detail, including its advantages and disadvantages. Further research directions for NBBS are also proposed.
A Brief Introduction to Bainitic Transformation

Abstract:Bainitic transformation exists in steels, non-ferrous alloys and some ceramics. Bainitic steel is now acting as beneficial engineering material. Point-of-views on mechanism of bainitic transformation given by different authors, displacists and diffusionists, on basis of morphology, kinetics or crystallography are critically reviewed. Theory concerning transformation in steel that the bainite formation begins with the decomposition of ferrite supersaturated with carbon has yet not been supported. Segregation of substitutional element at interface resulting in solute drag effect which may explain the phenomenon about incomplete transformation was observed by some experiments. The incomplete transformation resulting from shear mechanism, as shearist suggested, is not a universal phenomenon in bainite formation for steels. The tent-shaped relief occurs during bainite formation does not show the characteristics of invariant plain strain. Sometimes the phenomenological theory of martensite crystallography may be approximately applied to crystallography of bainite formation, however, it can no longer be used to ascertain whether the transformation is diffusional or displacive. Experiments on solute drag effect and interface structure by high resolution electron microscopy, study of thermodynamics, influences of magnetic and stress fields on bainite formation as well as some prebainitic phenomena do improve that the bainite formation occurs by means of diffusional mechanism. The present author defines the bainite as product of diffusional transformation usually with plate-shape, presenting tent-shaped relief on free surface during the formation. Perspective in further study on transformation mechanism and application of bainite is given.

Abstract:Multiphase microstructure with carbide-free bainite, martensite and a small amount of film-like retained austenite was obtained in a new Mn-Si-Cr-C steel, designed to promote bainite transformation. The microstructural constituents were studied by a combination of electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, dilatometry and high temperature laser confocal microscopy. A critical analysis of experimental data and theoretical analysis underscored that the austenite stability is enhanced by bainitic transformation, during quenching and partitioning process, besides carbon partitioning. The nucleation of bainite divided the untransformed austenite and refined the grain size of retained austenite, benefiting the mechanical properties, especially low temperature toughness.

Abstract:Nanobainite and dispersed carbides were gained on the surface layer of a modified carburizing 23Cr2Ni2Si1Mo bainitic bearing steel based on carburization, tempering at high temperature, and succedent low-temperature isothermal quenching. As compared with the conventional carburizing 20Cr2Ni4 martensitic bearing steel, the novel carburizing 23Cr2Ni2Si1Mo nanobainitic bearing steel showed a much higher wear-resisting performance and rolling contact fatigue performance. Moreover, the hardenability and the comprehensive mechanical property of the modified 23Cr2Ni2Si1Mo bearing steel are better than those of the 20Cr2Ni4 bearing steel. The excellent properties suggest that the novel carburizing 23Cr2Ni2Si1Mo nanostructured bainitic steel is very promising to manufacture heavy-duty bearing, especially for bearings that bear impact load and need high wear-resisting performance and high rolling contact fatigue performance during their service life.
