Abstract:Nanocrystalline free-iron dispersoid was precipitated in the melt-spun and heat-treated Nd12Fe82TixB6-x (A-Alloys), and Nd10Fe84TiyB6-y (C-alloys), (x, y=0 to 5). Annealing at a temperature between 600 and 800 degrees C for 3.6 ks, though introduces large volume fraction of free iron dispersoid, bestows high coercivity in the range of 3.5 to 8.8 kOe, at a Ti level of 1 to 3 at.%, depending on annealing temperatures. Remanence enhancement was observed in C-alloys with a calculated volume fraction of around 10% free-iron dispersoid. The domain-wall-pinning mechanism of an A-alloy can not be well-fitted by a Gaunt's plot of temperature dependence of coercivity. Transmission electron microscopy reveals a nanocrystalline structure consisting of at least two phases of the Nd2Fe14B phase with a grain size of 30 to 100 nm, and the free-iron dispersoid of 5 to 50 nm. Exchange hardening mechanism is found to be responsible for the high coercivity of these alloys.
