Abstract:Al-Ti-C master alloys have been prepared with a novel production method. X-ray diffraction, SEM and EDS were used to examine the phases and microstructures of the master alloys. The master alloys have block-like Al3Ti particles and submicron size TiCx with x ranging from 0.49 to 0.78, and show excellent grain refining performance for commercially pure aluminum. Tianium carbides were observed at the crystallization centers in refined castings.

Abstract:Grain refinement tests for Al–Ti master alloys showed hereditary effect of the initial ingot grain size. Microstructures of master alloys had a great influence on their grain refining response. The difference in grain refinement effectiveness between different structures of master alloys was revealed only with an increase in the holding time.

Abstract:The AlTiC master alloy has been prepared in different components to refine 99.8%Al and 99.98％Al, then compared to two typical Al5Ti1B in refining efficiency and the grain nuclear. The result showed that the refining efficiency seemed better if the nucleation of high pure aluminum revealed complexity and variety. It may due to that the latency heterogeneous nucleation was efficient on the whole, consequently accelerated refining efficiency.
Performance Comparison of AlTiC and AlTiB Master Alloys in Grain Refinement of Commercial and High Purity Aluminum

Abstract:For further knowledge about the refining performance of AlTiC master alloys, A15.5Ti0.25C and A16.5Ti0.5C master alloys containing high Ti and C content were prepared and used in grain refining experiments of 99.8% commercial pure aluminum(CPAl). Their performance was compared with two types of Al5Ti1B refiners whose performance was nowadays considered to be the best. These two types of master alloys show similar refining efficiency at the addition level of 0.2%. However, at the addition level of 0.5%, there still exists great performance difference between AlTiC and Al5TiB alloys in grain refinement of 99.98% and 99.995% high purity aluminum(HPAl). The growth of columnar grains is fully suppressed due to the refinement of AlTiC at the addition level of 0.5%. Also, at the same addition level, the grain refining experiments of A13Ti0.15C and A15Ti0.2C master alloys which have found initial commercial applications are conducted in the above-mentioned three types of pure aluminum. According to the experimental results, these two refiners of different compositions are both nonideal. The second phase particles extracted from each refiner were observed through TEM, while the nuclei of grains after grain refinement were observed through SEM. The results were analyzed through computation and comparison of the constitutional-supercooling parameter and the growth-restriction parameter whose values were determined by solute element in aluminum melt with different purity. Apparently, AlTiC master alloys with high content of Ti and C element have great refining potential.

Abstract:Industries largely rely on empirical tests to determine what composition and amount of TiBAl grain refiners to add during the casting of aluminum alloy for cast grain structure refinement. TiBAl grain refiners are aluminum master alloys having intermetallic particles within the aluminum matrix, these particles are mainly made of Ti and Al borides, having higher melting point than aluminum matrix. Addition of them to the melt, induces heterogeneous nucleation of aluminum cast grain structures, which promotes solidification of fine equiaxed grains at expense of columnar grain structures. This yields in grain refinement of cast structures, and is beneficial to mechanical and surface treatment properties on the final product. Very often in industrial practice during casting, whether a grain refiner is suitable for a given alloy, the amount to be added in the melt, and what cooling rates to use, are questions remain and reaching the balance becomes a cumbersome practice, and leads to pernicious material's properties. This study aims to explore the refinement efficiency of three variants of locally supplied TiBAl grain refiners on the microstructure of cast pure aluminum (CPAl). A standard test method of TP-1 was adopted and the efficiency of TiBAl grain refiners was determined according to the average grain sizes. It was found that Al-3Ti-1B alloys from different suppliers yield different grain sizes, however, Al-5Ti-1B alloy has better efficiency than Al-3Ti-1B alloy system on CPAl material. The optimum holding time for CPAl melt at 750°C is 5 minutes to achieve a fine grain size.

Abstract:In view of the continuing interest in the solidification characteristics of dilute Al-Ti alloys,1 a recent study2 of the mechanism(s) of grain refinement induced in high purity aluminum by various additions of master alloys containing Ti, B, Cr, Mo, V and Zr is reported. For alloys containing more than 0.2 wt pct Ti, TiAl3 was shown to be commonly a nucleant, in both Al-Ti and Al-Ti-B systems. In addition, it was found that the nature of the master alloys is important in determining the degree of grain refinement a given alloying addition will produce. A “saturation” effect is reported for additions of Ti, and ti-B,i.e., further additions of titanium beyond a given level do not provide any further reduction in grain size.

Abstract:It comprehensively presents the mechanisms of grain refinement concerning the commercial grain refiner of Al-Ti, Al-B, Al-Ti-B(Ti/B2.22), Al-Ti-B(Ti/B2.22) and Al-Ti-C, which are commonly used in aluminum industry. The mechanisms include peritectic theory, eutectic theory, ternary peritectic theory, ternary eutectic theory, “carbide-boride particle” theory, “clusters of TiC particles” theory, peritectic “hulk” theory, hypernucleation theory, “duplex” nucleation mechanism, and complex eutectic theory, etc. And the validness and defectiveness of the mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract:Three kinds of grain refiner Al-Ti-B(wire),Al-Ti-B(ingot),Al-Ti-C were added to the aluminum for refining experiment respectively.Their refining effecting on aluminum was compared.The mechanical properties of the refined pure aluminum were studied with changing the amount of grain refiner.The results show that when the addition amount of grain refiner is 3%,the refinement effect of Al-Ti-B(wire) is best and the refinement effect of Al-Ti-B(ingot) is better than Al-Ti-C.The addition amount of grain refiner on the refining effect has certain influence.When the addition amount from 1% to 10%,with the increase of the addition amount the size of the refined grain becomes smaller at first and then larger.At the same time,there is an optimal addition amount range.With the addition amount of grain refiner increasing,the tensile strength,elongation and hardness of aluminum increases gradually firstly and then decreased gradually.When the addition amount of grain refiner is about 8%,the tensile strength,elongation and hardness of pure aluminum reached maximum value.

Abstract:It is well known that the mechanical properties of commercial pure Al are influenced by size of α-Al dendrites. In the present work, Al-5Ti-0.62C-0.2Nd grain refiner was prepared by a pure molten aluminum thermal explosion reaction, and its effect on grain refinement and mechanical properties of commercial pure Al was investigated. Microstructure and phase composition show that Al-5Ti-0.62C-0.2Nd grain refiner consists of α-Al, granular TiC, lump-like TiAl3, and block-like Ti2Al20Nd. Grain-refining tests on commercial pure Al show that an Al-5Ti-0.62C-0.2Nd grain refiner has better refining performance compared with Al-5Ti-0.62C grain refiner. With addition of 0.2-wt.%-Al-5Ti-0.62C-0.2Nd grain refiner, the average grain size of commercial pure Al can be refined from roughly 2800 to 155±5 µm effectively, and it has higher resistance to grain-refinement fading. On account of the grain refinement, the tensile strength and elongation are increased by approximately 18.3% and 83.5%, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract Aluminum and its alloys having lots of advantageous properties are among the most-used metallic materials. So, it is of immense importance to find suitable processes and methods leading to high-quality purified Al melt. In this regard, there are numerous challenges in achieving high purity Al melts, such as its propensity to react with air, oxygen, and water vapor, the presence of a variety of oxide, non-oxide, and solid particle inclusions that lead to the production of pores, cracks, pinholes, and dross, finally adversely influencing the overall quality of the product. The main methods of melt refining are fluxing, floatation, and filtration, but more sophisticated methods have also emerged. The best method for purification can be chosen based on the type of impurities and the desired level of purification. With the industrial development, the need to establish more cost-effective and simpler methods has increased, and in addition, methods should be considered for recycling large volumes of scarp Al parts that contain more impurities. Moreover, achieving high purity melt is also a vital issue for use in specific applications. The present article has been written to discuss the above issues and focus on the study of various methods of aluminum purification.

Abstract:For aluminum alloys, grain refinement is the most efficient method to improve both strength and ductility. However, this rule may not apply for the recycled Al due to the large amount of intermetallics. In this paper, both secondary dendritic arm spacing (SDAS) and intermetallics have been quantified as a function of grain refinements including traditional AlTiB and most recent Y refiners. Using U-net CNN machine learning algorithm, both Fe-rich intermetallics and eutectic Si have been successfully segmented from optical and SEM/EDS images. Different from traditional refiners, (AlTiB + Y) not only strengthens the refining ability but also reduces the percentage of harmful needle-like Fe-rich intermetallics and transforms flaky Si particles into fibrous morphology. Harvested from the comprehensive grain refiners, SDAS was reduced by 38.9%, the average equivalent diameter of eutectic Si was reduced by 37.9%, and Fe-rich intermetallics content was significantly reduced. In particular, the microstructure improved by AlTiB+ 0.05Y (0.6 wt% AlTiB + 0.3 wt%Y) resulted in an increase in elongation of the refined alloy to 3.9 ± 0.4%, which is 63.3% higher compared to the base alloy, while the UTS remained at the original 260 MPa. This paper offers a promising refining technology for the recycling and casting of Al-Si alloys.

Abstract:The excellent grain refinement effectiveness and good electrical conductivity is difficult to be simultaneously obtained due to the influence of both the grain boundary and excessive Ti in the usually used refiners, such as Al-5Ti-1B master alloy. In order to solve this problem, in this work, Al-Ti-B mater alloys with less or without excessive Ti but with high refinement potency TiB2 have been tried to prepare, and the grain refinement effectiveness of them and its influence on the electrical conductivity of the refined Al have been investigated. It is found that the grain refinement effectiveness of the Al-Ti-B master alloys prepared using the Al-5Ti-1B and Al-B master alloys as the starting materials at 720 degrees C is much better than those prepared using the Al-10Ti and Al-B master alloys, which is because that the high refinement potency TiB2 with TiAl3 2DC in the Al-5Ti-B can be kept in the prepared master alloys. As a result, using the prepared Al-Ti-B master alloys as the refiners, both the good grain refinement effectiveness and improved electrical conductivity of Al can be realized.

Abstract:The objective of the current work is to the establish conventional mechanisms of grain refining, and the effect of the refiner-modifier interaction in Al-based alloys on the resultant grain refining obtained. The different castings were carried out in preheated metallic molds with solidification rates of around 0.15 °C/s and 7 °C/s. As the nucleation sites (Al 3 Ti) change in composition depending on the percentage of Si in the alloy, the term "poisoning" frequently used to explain the loss or weakening of the power of the refiner, is misused. Addition of L1 2 metals e.g., Zr and Sc would contribute to constitutional undercooling, restricting the coarsening of α-Al grains as well as act as suitable sites for heterogeneous nucleation. The use of transition or ultra pure (99.99) metals would increase the degree of undercooling as well as nucleation of new grains due to precipitation of the second phase leading to the formation of a heterogeneous grain distribution. Thus, grain refining of binary alloys - partially or fully, may not be produced only through constitutional undercooling. It is suggested that, the use of 0.18%Sc has more-or-less the same grain refining efficiency of 0.15%Ti added in the form of Al–Ti–B master alloy i.e., reduction in the grain size by about 85% and an increase in the alloy strength by about 30%. For a given solidification rate, there is a grain refining threshold beyond which no further refining can be achieved. Apparently grain refining mechanisms are independent of solidification rate, only the extent of refining.

Abstract:Grain refining effects and mechanisms of AlTiC, A14B and A13Ti4B master alloy upon commercial pure aluminium and hypoeutectic AJ-Si alloys have been investigated. It is found that A16Ti0.2C master alloy have a very good refining effect upon pure aluminium but have almost no effect upon hypoeutecitic Al-Si alloy, whereas AlTiB master alloys with substoichiometric ratio(w(Ti)/w(B)2.2) such as A14B and A13Ti4B alloys (wTi/wB=0 for A14B alloy) have no effects upon pure aluminium but have an excellent potency in refining hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys. The experimental results perhaps are attribute to different grain refining mechanisms of these master alloys in pure aluminium and hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys.

Abstract:In the present study, Al-3 wt% Al2O3 master alloy was successfully prepared by the reaction between calcined kaolin and aluminum melt, combined with mechanical stirring and high-energy ultrasonic dispersion technology. The γ-Al2O3 particles produced by the reaction are uniformly dispersed in the matrix, and the average size of γ-Al2O3 is about 65 nm. The refinement effect of Al-3 wt% Al2O3 master alloy on A356 alloy was studied. It was found that the α-Al grain size in A356 alloy refined by Al-3 wt% Al2O3 master alloy was decreased from 980 ± 155 µm to 337 ± 95 µm. Compared with the Al-5Ti-1B master alloy, Al-3 wt% Al2O3 has a higher refinement efficiency. In addition, the refinement efficiency of the Al-3 wt% Al2O3 master alloy will not fade within 60 min. Transmission electron microscope analysis showed that the orientation relationship between γ-Al2O3 and Al was (22−2)γ-Al2O3[011]γ-Al2O3//(11−1)Al[011]Al, which demonstrated that γ-Al2O3 could be used as heterogeneous nucleation sites to refine α-Al grains. Moreover, the tensile properties of A356 alloy had been significantly improved.

Abstract:Aluminum with different Fe contents of(w) 0.2%～1.0% has been refined by Al-Ti-B and Al-Ti-C master alloy.The nucleus and their "halo" around have been investigated by scanning electron microscope.Then the nucleation and growth of grains have been analyzed.The result shows that with the two master alloys adding into the melt,the TiB2 and TiC particles are released,which can absorb Ti in the melt and form the concentration gradient of Ti.The morphology of "halos" are different,the "halos" around TiB2 are round basically,while the "halos" around TiC are petal-like.At the condition of Fe existing in the melt,the fusing between the "halos" and different morphologies of "halos" are the important factors for the growing of crystals.Under the condition of the same "halo" morphology,the Fe content is the significant effect on crystal growing.The crystals grow to dendrites more obviously with the increasing of Fe content in the melt.

Abstract:Grain Refinement process is an important stage in production of aluminum castings. There is common question for all producer of aluminum castings that how they can be sure about the quality of nucleation. Thermal analysis is an important tool to answer this question. In this research, different types of inoculants were used to investigation of nucleation in A356 aluminum alloy. The cooling curve of each sample was recorded and by using a special computer program, the first derivative was calculated. By calculating zero curve and analyzing the cooling curve, it is possible to predict the quality of nucleation and calculation fraction of solids, latent heat and other information. The result of this research have shown that if maximum undercooling of nucleation was approximately 4 C, the quality of nucleation process will be more reliable.

Abstract:In this study, it is aimed to investigate effect of the grain refinement on the mechanical properties of the AA 6082. The micro structure which plays crucial role in determining the mechanical properties of the alloys is varied according to grain size, chemical composition and cooling rate. The prescription was prepared by determining the chemical composition range according to the standard (TSE-EN-573). The casting experiments were performed on the 6082 aluminium alloy which belongs to Al-Mg-Si system with different percentages of grain refinement (AlTi 5B 1) and chemical composition. Heat treatment that is homogenization and artificial aging was applied after casting and extrusion process, respectively. The microstructure analysis and mechanical tests were done on the produced samples in order to understand the structural and mechanical strength of the material. The experimental results showed that using the grain refinements is contributed to increasing the mechanical properties. It was observed that the mechanical strength values increased by 17% after the reduction of the grain size by 69% with the 0.11% addition of the AlTi 5B 1 master alloy.

Abstract:Through appropriate synthesis technological conditions and content-AlTiC has the same grain refinement effect on99.7%Al as the best AlTiB in the world.Both AlTiC and AlTiB have excellent refinement effect on1070-1060-1235-3004-6063and8011alloys.When AlTiC and AlTiB were used to refine Al alloys containing Zr-Cr and Mn elements-no poison effect was detected-and furthermore Zr and Mn promote the grain refinement effect of AlTiC and AlTiB.Whether TiC can nucleate(-Al separately depends not only on how TiC was introduce into the melt but also on the contact time.When AlTiC without Al 3 Ti was used in refining commercial pure aluminum-it has certain grain refinement effect up to60min holding time.While if TiC powder was introduce into the melt-it has obvious refining effect after TiC powder was scattered uniformly in the melt.
