Abstract:Functional nanosized cage complexes with an octahedral framework have been synthesized by the facile self-assembly reactions of six 90 PdII-containing compounds {[Pd(dppf)(OTf)(2)] or [Pd(PPh3)(OTf)(2)], dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl) ferrocene, OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate} and four 120 degrees functional tritopic ligands [2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] in acetone. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and AFM images clarify the formation of 3-4 nm nanoparticles. These highly symmetrical cage complexes are discrete, face-directed, functional nanoparticles with symmetrical octahedral structures. The self-assembled functional cage complexes exhibit interesting electrochemical activities, and thus will potentially be useful in the catalysis of redox reactions, the encapsulation of sizeable guest molecules and the control of organic synthetic reactions.

Abstract:Monodispersed magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were synthesized. Transmission electron microscopy study shows that the nanoparticles are in the shape of Wagner-Seitz crystals. The magnetite nanoparticles self-assemble into body-centered cubic superlattice, in which the nanoparticles have the same crystallographic orientations. Shape plays a very critical role in controlling the orientation of the nanoparticles in the superlattice. Both the self-assembly and self-orientation of nanoparticles are important for technical applications. This can also act as a complement to conventional lithography techniques.

Abstract:Magnetite nanocrystals with tunable crystalline structures (orthorhombic and cubic) were synthesized via a simple oxidation-coprecipitation approach basing on the reaction of FeSO4·7H2O with C6H12N4. The average diameter of prepared orthorhombic Fe3O4 nanorods were 15 nm while their lengths were approximately 150~200 nm. As-prepared cubic counterparts were composed of 10 nm sized nanoparticles. XRD, FESEM, TEM, SAED and HRTEM were then used to characterize our samples. In addition, magnetic measurements showed the saturation magnetization of orthorhombic magnetite was lower than that of cubic ones. Mössbauer spectroscopy verified the samples possessed the nature of cubic magnetite. Finally, a possible growth mechanism for orthorhombic nanorods and cubic nanoparticles was also discussed.

Abstract:Iron nanoparticles are highly desirable for their potential applications in magnetic and catalytic industry. However, their shape-controlled fabrication is still an important challenge. Here we successfully synthesized icosahedral face-centered cubic (fcc) Fe nanoparticles with size of 5-13 nm by a specifically designed thermodynamic governed synthetic route, which is facile but highly efficient and reproducible. With the aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the unique icosahedral structure's pseudo-2-fold, 3-fold, and pseudo-5-fold axes were directly observed for the first time and verified by computer simulation, which reveals that nanoparticles' orientations have a large impact on HRTEM images at ultrahigh resolution. It is expected that as-synthesized Fe nanoparticles with sharp corners and edges would be beneficial for tailoring chemical and physical properties at the nanoscale.

Abstract:We describe a facile solvothermal route for the large-scale preparation of ferromagnetic Fe3O4 sub-micrometer spheres and nanorods by using FeCl3 as the iron source, oleic acid as the surfactant, and ethylene glycol as the reducing agent and solvent. The as-synthesized Fe3O4 microspheres are composed of a mess of Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a size of 10 nm and have nearly monodisperse diameters that can be controlled in the range 100-410 nm. HRTEM images and SAED patterns show that these microspheres present a "single-crystalline" nature, which can be attributed to the highly oriented assembly of the small Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Interestingly, by using the pre-synthesized Fe3O4 microspheres as the growth substrate, single-crystalline Fe3O4 nanorods can be formed on the surfaces of the microspheres. These nanorods are about 7-20 nm in diameter and 120-400 nm in length, and have smooth surfaces. The formation mechanisms of the Fe3O4 microspheres and nanorods have been investigated and discussed. Furthermore, the magnetic properties of the as-synthesized microspheres and nanorods have also been investigated and the magnetization saturation values are 74.6 and 92.3 emu/g, respectively. Abstract:Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized by a co-precipitation method using sodium citrate and oleic acid as modifiers. Phase composition and microstructure analysis indicate that the sodium citrate and oleic acid have been successfully grafted onto the surface of Fe3O4 MNPs. The magnetic behaviors reveal that the modification can decrease the saturation magnetization of Fe3O4 MNPs due to the surface effect. Fe3O4 MNPs modified by sodiumcitrate and oleic acid show excellent dispersion capability, which should be ascribed to the great reduction of high surface energy and dipolar attraction of the nanoparticles.

Abstract:In this paper, Fe3O4 nanofibers with average diameters of 100nm were successfully synthesized by electrospinning of PVP/Fe(NO3)·9H2O composite solution followed by calcinations and reduction. The resulting Fe3O4 nanofibers were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), transmission Mössbauer spectra (MS), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). These nanofibers showed a cubic structure and uniform and continuous morphology. The Fe3O4 nanofibers possessed a saturation magnetization Ms of 57.6emu/g. A large coercivity Hc of 188.4Oe together with a high remanence ratio Mr/Ms=0.28 is observed, which result from the shape anisotropy.

Abstract:Uniform Fe3O4 octahedral microcrystals with perfect appearance have been successfully synthesized by a Triton X100-assisted polyol process. During the polyols process for the preparation of Fe3O4 octahedra, the introduction of Triton X100 decreases significantly the needed concentration of NaOH. The results show that Fe3O4 octahedra are composed of eight triangular sheets, which are equilateral triangles. The edge size of Fe3O4 octahedron is about 4 μm. The magnetic properties of Fe3O4 octahedral particles were evaluated on a SQUID magnetometer at room temperature. The value of saturation magnetization for Fe3O4 octahedra is 90 emu/g, which is close to the value of bulk magnetite. The remnant magnetization and coercive force of Fe3O4 octahedra are considerably low, which are rare for the Fe3O4 particles with the size scale of micrometers. The Fe3O4 octahedral microcrystals show high saturation magnetizations and very low coercivities.

Abstract:We have developed a novel hydrothermal method to fabricate Fe3O4 ring-like nanostructures via oriented attachment of Fe3O4 nanoparticles through intermediate platelets with incorporation of inorganic salts. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selective-area electron diffraction (SAED), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) and vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM). A reasonable mechanism based on the self-assembly of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles on graphene nanosheets using inorganic ions as crystal growth modifiers is proposed. The intrinsic dipole–dipole interactions between the individual magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles act as the driving force for nanoring formation. Saturation moment of the superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanorings is much higher than that of the corresponding disassembled nanoparticles. The enhancement of saturation moment is due to the oriented ring-like assembly with synergistic magnetism. This study could provide an additional tool for fabricating other nanostructures via oriented attachment.

Abstract:A facile chemical approach to producing monodisperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles is developed in the presence of oleic acid and laurylamine solution. These particles capped with organic ligands could be readily dispersed in nonpolar hexane. Transmission electron microscopy observations indicated that the as-synthesized nanoparticles were single crystals. The solvethermal temperature and consequent aging time are demonstrated to be critical for size distribution.

Abstract:Magnetic anisotropic nanocomposites have attracted tremendous interests, due to their unexpected properties originating from the interactions of the interfaces except for the intrinsic features. In this work, we develop a facile solution chemistry synthesis method to prepare the one-dimensional (1D) Co-Fe3O4 heterostructures with hard magnetic property. Interestingly, the Fe precursor firstly decompose and nucleate individually, and then grow on the surface of the hexagonal closed-packed (hcp) Co nanorods (NRs) upon prolonging heating time at higher temperature, which is different from the general seed-mediated growth model. The distribution density of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of the Co NRs can be varied with the addition of Fe source, modulating the values of coercivity and saturation magnetization for the Co-Fe3O4 heterostructures. The as-synthesizedCo-Fe3O4 heterostructures maintain the hard magnetic properties with a coercivity value more than 2.5 kOe as well as a saturation magnetization value up to 128.3 emu g−1, indicating the preservation of the anisotropy of the hcp Co NRs.

Abstract:Monodisperse Fe3O4 Nano particles have been successfully synthesized by solvothermal method using water and ethylene glycol as solvents, and their sizes could be controlled by changing the ratio of water to ethylene glycol. Subsequent surface modification of Fe3O4 had been carried out using tetraethyl orthosilicate and 3-Aminopropyl triethoxysilane as modification agents. The magnetic materials have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. It was verified that SiO2 layers have been coated on the surface of Fe3O4 and NH2- groups have been grafted on the spherical surface of magnetic materials.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic zinc ferrite nanocrystals at ambient temperature were synthesized via the thermal decomposition of metal-surfactant complexes. Characterization measurements including transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were performed for as-synthesized ZnFe2O4 particles. The sample has a relatively narrow size distribution with an average particle size of 9.8 +/- 0.2 nm and standard deviation of 30%. The as-synthesized zinc ferrite nanocrystals are superparamagnetic at room temperature with a blocking temperature T-B = 68 +/- 2 K and a saturation magnetization M-S = 65.4 emu center dot g(-1) at T = 10 K, which are caused by the change in the inversion degree of the spinel structure. A coercive field of H-C = 102 +/- 5 Oe in the blocked state indicates small particle anisotropy, although evidence of surface spin canting was inferred from magnetization data in the as-synthesized ZnFe2O4 nanocrystals. Our results demonstrate that magnetic properties of magnetic particles can be largely modified by just changing particle size, which might be a useful way to design novel magnetic materials.

Abstract:Inorganic nanoparticles with controlled size and shape are technologically important due to the strong correlation between these parameters and magnetic, electrical, and catalytic properties. Herein we demonstrated that under appropriate conditions, rodlike α-FeOOH (goethite) and porous fusiform α-Fe2O3 (hematite) uniform nanocrystallines could be selectively synthesized in large quantities via a facile surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) assisted hydrothermal synthetic route. The morphology and structure of the final products were investigated in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The probable formation mechanism of the α-FeOOH and α-Fe2O3 uniform nanoparticles was discussed on the basis of the experimental results.

Abstract:Fe5O7(OH)·4H2O ferrihydrite is a low-crystallinity antiferromagnetic material. γ-Fe2O3 (maghemite) magnetic nanoparticles were prepared from a ferrihydrite precursor, by chemically induced transformation in FeCl2/NaOH solution. The magnetization, morphology, crystal structure and chemical composition of the products were determined by vibrating sample magnetometry, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Ferrihydrite underwent aggregation growth and transformed into α-FeO(OH) (goethite) particles, which subsequently transformed into γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, that became coated with NaCl. The γ-Fe2O3 particles had a flake-like morphology, when prepared from 0.01 mol/L FeCl2 and a FeCl2:NaOH molar ratio of 0.4. The γ-Fe2O3 particles were more spherical, when prepared from a FeCl2:NaOH molar ratio of 0.6. The Fe content of the flake-like particles was lower than that of the spherical particles. Their magnetizations were similar, and the coercivity of the flake-like particles was larger. The differences in morphology and magnetization were attributed to the surface effect, and the difference in coercivity to the shape effect.
