Abstract:Internal oxidation occurs on such kind of alloys, in which one component is much more active than the rest, but not concentrated enough to form a continuous surface scale of its oxide. Instead, precipitates of this oxide form in the alloy substrate as a result of inward oxygen diffusion. It has been a topic of intensive theoretical and experimental studies. Theory about its major features has been well established, as can be mainly represented by C. Wagner`s early work. Previously, a Randomwalk-Cellular Automation model of oxide precipitation in alloys was developed and experimented by computer simulation. The results showed encouragingly good agreement with general thermodynamic features and some basic kinetic features of precipitation in metals. In the present work, the authors transplanted this model to internal oxidation by changing only the initial and boundary conditions of the alloy-oxygen system, aiming at examining the validity of this novel model under a more sophisticated while nevertheless quantitatively well understood case.
