Abstract:The longitudinal bracing systems in industrial buildings maintain the stability of the longitudinal frame and reduce the effective length of columns.In this paper,the stiffness and capacity requirements of the two-story bracing systems to maintain the stability of the longitudinal columns are investigated.The stiffness requirements of different cases are derived from the ideal elastic model.With the most unfavorable initial imperfections considered,the capacity requirements of the bracings that reduce the effective length factor of the columns to half are suggested for practical application.

Abstract:Longitudinal bracings are used to carry horizontal loads and to maintain the stability of the longitudinal frame.This paper investigated the stiffness and capacity requirements to be imposed on the bracing system to maintain the stability of the building.The interaction of the cross bracings and the connecting bars at the top of the columns was considered in the derivation.The stiffness requirement was derived from an ideal elastic model.The capacity requirement was derived taking into account the initial imperfections.It is found that the capacity requirement of bracings to maintain the system stability and the capacity requirement to carry the horizontal load are not simply additive.Horizontal loads will decrease the lateral stiffness of the frame and therefore increase the capacity requirement.Explicit formulae are proposed for the capacity requirement of bracing
Column Effective Length Considering the Inter-story Interaction

Abstract:Through an analysis of a simple two-story frame, this paper revealed that the assumptions used in conventional effective length method led to an unrealistic distribution of beam restraints among the connected columns. With three assumptions of the conventional approach discarded, a new approach is proposed by which column effective length considering inter-story interaction can be obtained in unbraced two- or three-story frames. A quadratic equation for two-story frames and a cubic equation for three-story frames are derived from which the rotational restraints provided to each column may be solved and the effective length factors can then be determined by the traditional formula or tables. For frames of more than 3 stories, the weakest story is selected and a three-story sub-assemblage including the weakest column is taken out, and the proposed method is applied, the effective length of the weakest column is thus obtained, the effective length of the remaining columns are computed through a pre-defined relations. Because the sub-assemblage included beams at far ends of the columns above and below the column under consideration, the far end condition (hinged or fixed) may be considered easily.
Out of Plane Stability of Greenhouse Side Columns with Eccentrically Lateral Braces

Abstract:Rectangular box section is widely used as columns in agricultural Greenhouse. Smaller tubes are attached onthe outside of the most dangerous side columns to serve as wall purlin. These horizontal smaller tubes provide lateralbraces to side columns in practice, but this effect is lacking of theoretical supporting. The paper carried out an analysis ofthe efficiency of the tube in providing the lateral support. Analysis revealed that, though the smaller tubes are eccentricto the centroid of the column, the lateral braces to the column could still be effective. The out of plane effective lengthcould be decreased accordingly. According to this conclusion, the out of plane effective length could take the distancebetween the lateral braces when checking the stability of the column. In this way, the checking calculation of the sidecolumn could be more scientific and reasonable on the bases of less material application and proper strength and stabilityof the side column.

Abstract:The stiffness and strength requirements of the industrial building longitudinal bracing system to maintain the stability of the building were investigated in this study. The stiffness requirement was derived from the ideal model. The strength requirement was derived taking into account the initial out-of-vertical state of the columns and the initial out-of-straight state of the connecting bars. The interaction of the cross bracings and the longitudinal connecting bars at the top of the columns was considered in the derivation. Both stiffness and strength requirements were expressed in the explicit forms and can be used in the practical longitudinal bracing system design work.

Abstract:Integral model of some workshop was analyzed by ANSYS software which has horizontal knees at ends of crane beams.Finite element simulation was done to analyze portal frame with single span double slopes and one with double spans four slopes.At the same time,displacements and the largest stress of rigid frame column were compared when crane lateral braking forces were loaded symmetrically and asymmetrically.The results show that the twisting deformation of rigid frame column is smaller when the horizontal load is asymmetrical,but the out-of-plane moment is induced and the stress due to this out-of-plane moment is about 8MPa.In practical column design,the stress ratio at this cross-section should be controlled.

Abstract:Rectangular hollow section (RHS) is widely used as columns of agricultural greenhouse constructions. To enhance the resistance of these columns against the out-of-plane buckling failure, the bracing system is frequently adopted, typically composed of the bracing spans containing a two-layer x-brace at intervals of a number of spans and a horizontal bar connecting the mid-height sections of all columns of the same row. The horizontal bar provides the lateral brace to the columns between two adjacent bracing spans. Due to ease of installation and existence of glass at the outer face, the horizontal bar is usually connected to the inner face of the columns at the edges of the construction (side columns) using the overlapped joints, leading to the side columns being eccentrically braced by the horizontal bar. The present paper carried out an investigation into behavior of the eccentrically braced RHS columns, including the buckling load, failure mode, bracing eccentricity, bracing stiffness and the relationships between. Simple approximations of good accuracy are also provided for the normalized critical bracing eccentricity and buckling load, with which the hand-calculation method is only necessary in practical design. A worked example is given for side columns in greenhouse constructions following the procedure presented in this study.
Stiffened Approach of Column Flange and Web in Bolt End-plate Connections

Abstract:Column flange needs to be stiffened in beam-to-column bolt end-plate connections.A new detailing of enlarged bolt backing plate welded with column flange is suggested,and a formula for determining the backing plate thickness is proposed.Calculations show that backing plate with proposed thickness can diminish the local deformation of column flange around tensile bolts effectively,and it has the same strength and stiffness with thickened column flange as required by CECS102.A new type of diagonal stiffener,which has an eccentricity with the corner of the panel zone ( Morris stiffener) and thus has merit of avoiding conflict with bolts,is designed and analyzed.The analysis shows that the Morris stiffener can equally reduce shear deformation of panel zone as the traditional diagonal stiffener,increase connection stiffness,and postpone web yielding.

Abstract:As an important aspect of the city upgrade plan, installing the elevators for existing multi-story residential buildings means a lot to the residents of the higher floors, especially for old people. To minimize the site disruption and overcome the space limitation of installation, the modular elevator shafts have been widely adopted. The external wall decoration panels are normally pre-installed on the elevator shaft frame elements in the workshop, which makes it difficult for the connection between upper and lower segments using the highstrength bolts due to very limited space for applying the pre-tension. A novel column-to-column connection is presented in this study, consisting of an end plate, web opening of column web and strengthening plate at each of the column end. The tensile behavior of the proposed connection is first investigated through an experiment. Subsequently, a detailed finite element model is built and verified using the test results, with which a parametric study is conducted with the main parameters considered. Finally, a simple analytical solution for predicting the design load of the proposed connection is developed employing the yield line theory. Comparisons with the finite element results indicate the high accuracy of the proposed solution. The presented connection is believed to be a good solution for the on-site connection between H-columns of highly assembled modular structures, not limited to the elevator shafts.
Approach to Stiffen Column Flange and Web in Bolt End-Plate Connections

Abstract:To stiffen the column flange and column web in beam-to-column bolt end-plate connections,an FE analysis using contact elements was carried out to analyze the connections. The bolt backing plate welded onto the inner surface of column flange was studied,and a formula for determining the backing plate thickness was obtained. Calculation results show that the backing plate with proposed thickness can effectively diminish the local deformation of column flange around tensile bolts,and has the same strength and stiffness with the thickened column flange. A new type of diagonal stiffener,which has an offset from the corner of the panel zone (Morris stiffener) and thus has merit of avoiding interfering with bolts,was designed and analyzed. The analysis shows that the Morris stiffener has similar functions with the traditional diagonal stiffener,i.e. reducing the shear deformation of panel zone,increasing the connection stiffness and postponing the web yielding. The bolt backing plate welded upon the inner surface of column flange can replace the thickened column flange,and the panel zone can be stiffened by Morris stiffener.

Abstract:It is researched that the forced features of the joints of the multi-story spanned diagonal bracing system for Chengda Tower in Chengdu.Based on the results of overall structural analysis under various load cases,sectional forces in members,beams,columns and adjacent braces,relating to a certain joint are recorded. Typical joints are then modeled in details for the stress analysis using shell elements.According to the finite element analysis,several measures for joint design are proposed.Subsequent FE analysis indicates that strengthening techniques proposed in this study are feasible and efficient.

Abstract:The compressive stress is remarkable in design of steel plate walls (SPWs) for high-rise buildings. Stiffeners are required to avoid the compressive buckling in service limit state. This paper first studies the elastic stability of horizontally stiffened steel plate walls (S-SPWs) in compression. The effect of stiffener torsional stiffness on elastic buckling stress is presented. Then the study extends to the elastic-plastic stability of imperfect S-SPWs. Comparing the elastic and elastic-plastic behaviour, the increased ultimate compressive strength is smaller than the increased elastic buckling stress due to the column type buckling behaviour of wide plate. Stiffener torsional stiffness can also increase the ultimate capacity. Formulas to predict the stiffness requirement on horizontal stiffeners are proposed based on the philosophy similar to the stiffness requirement on brace for columns in compression. With some minor modifications, the proposed formulas show good accuracy compared with numerical results.
A New Stiffness-Strength-relationship-based Design Approach for Global Buckling Prevention of Buckling-Restrained Braces

Abstract:This paper proposes a new stiffness-strength-relationship-based design approach that can pinpoint the target design solution for steel buckling-restrained braces (BRB). First, a stiffness–strength requirement interaction curve (the design criterion) with a very simple and easy-to-use form is derived based on a second-order analysis. This interaction curve clearly illustrates the opposing stiffness and strength requirements of the restraining system. Second, based on the geometrical parameters and material properties, a stiffness–strength relationship curve of the BRB restraining system is established. This second relationship curve is expressed by a linear function for a uniform steel BRB. By using the two analytical curves, the point of intersection defines the target design point. A straightforward design procedure for steel BRBs is then developed. A design example of steel BRBs is considered to demonstrate this easy-to-use design procedure for obtaining economical BRB designs. The design is verified and discussed by a rigorous finite element analysis.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the optimal (or least weight) design of steel buckling-restrained braces against global buckling. First, the global buckling prevention criterion of steel buckling-restrained braces (BRB) is re- constituted to take on a symmetric expression, i.e., (P-cr/P-u-1)[M-r/(v(o)P(u)) -1] >= 1, so as to provide clarity on the equal importance of the stiffness and strength requirements of the restraining member, where P-cr is the elastic buckling load, M-r the yield moment resistance, and v(o) the initial imperfection of the restraining member whereas P(cr )is the ultimate compressive load of the core under cyclic axial loads. It is shown herein that the optimal design of the restraining member satisfies (1) the boundary of the global buckling prevention criterion, and (2) the relationship between the stiffness term P-cr/P-u and the strength term M-r /(v(o)P(u)) in view of the maximum feasible cross-sectional height-to-thickness ratio as specified by the adopted design code recommendation. The satisfaction of these two conditions furnishes a unique optimal design of the restraining member. The optimal design can be expressed as an explicit equation in terms of the second moment of area of the restraining member. A design example is presented to illustrate the material (or weight) efficiency of all-steel BRB designs based on the proposed design equation.

This paper reports on a study of the stiffness and strength requirements which should be imposed on the platform-beams to brace the columns effectively. Closed forms solutions and simple-to-use formulae are provided in which the effect of the random column initial imperfection has been considered.

Abstract:An economic type of buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) to allow long spans and large capacities, the reduced-core-length BRBs (RCL-BRBs) are formed by sequentially assembling ordinary BRBs (yield portions) and ordinary braces (elastic portions) with high-strength bolts. This paper presents design recommendations for the global stability of the RCL-BRBs via theoretical and numerical investigations. In the analysis, the interaction between the yield and elastic portions of the RCL-BRBs is considered. First, the RCL-BRBs were classified into six types according to their compositions (the yield portion at one end, mid-span or both ends) and joint types (rigid or semi-rigid joint). Second, formulas for predictions of the elastic buckling loads of the RCL-BRBs were theoretically derived, and were verified by performing finite element (FE) eigenvalue buckling analyses. To investigate the nonlinear behavior of the RCL-BRBs, FE models considering both geometrical and material nonlinearities were built and calibrated with existing hysteretic tests of the RCL-BRBs. Then, a parametric study was conducted to investigate the effects of the geometrical parameters on the global stability behavior of the RCL-BRBs. Finally, based on the numerical results, the restraining ratio design requirements corresponding to the different types of RCL-BRBs were proposed to prevent their global buckling under axial compressive loads. Moreover, recommendations on the connection types between the yield and elastic portions of the RCL-BRBs are provided by analyzing a number of numerical examples.
Flexible bracing system of axial compression bearing column with double limb combined section

Abstract:In order to investigate the flexible bracing system composed of both bracing bar and linking bar, a simplified design approach for bracing system was proposed, and the flow chart for design of linking bar was given. With considering the influence of initial geometrical imperfection of compression-bearing column and bracing bar, the calculation methods for both bracing force and bracing stiffness were derived based on the analytical method. Because the bracing acts on the linking bar between two limb columns, the bracing stiffness decreases, and thus, the required bracing force increases. When the buckling resistant stiffness of columns increases or the slenderness ratio of bracing bar increases, the increase amplitude of required bracing force when the bracing acts on the linking bar is bigger than that of required bracing force when the bracing force directly acts on the columns. In combination with the engineering practice, the proposed design approach for the flexible bracing system is more economical and reasonable than the original engineering design scheme.

Abstract:This paper reports on a study of the buckling of a column eccentrically braced at its midheight in the weak direction. Emphasis is put on the influence of the brace eccentricity on the load-carrying capacity of the column. It is found to be impossible to increase the buckling load beyond the second smallest of the four critical loads corresponding respectively to buckling into one single-or double-half-wave flexurally or torsionally. It is also found that if the column is more liable to buckle in bending when the brace is absent, then a heavier brace is required to stabilize the column if the eccentricity exists; if, on the other hand, the column is more liable to buckle in torsion, then eccentricity is necessary in order to increase the buckling load efficiently.

Abstract:In recent years, buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) have been widely utilized in engineering structures. Generally, BRBs are diagonally installed in frame structures to serve as lateral-resistance and energy dissipation members. To prevent the local buckling of the unrestrained portion of a pin-ended BRB, an end collared BRB (EC-BRB) was proposed by prior researchers by installing end collars at both ends of an ordinary BRB. By using this approach, the enhancement construction of the unrestrained portion could be remarkably simplified, and the end collars can provide lateral restraints to the restraining member, thus improving the global stability of the BRB member. In this paper, a design method for global buckling prevention of pin-ended EC-BRBs based on the restraining ratio requirements is provided via theoretical and numerical analyses. The equation of elastic buckling loads of EC-BRBs is firstly derived and validated by the eigenvalue buckling analyses via ANSYS, and the restraining ratios of EC-BRBs could be further calculated. Then, the restraining ratio requirements of EC-BRBs are theoretically proposed based on the magnification factor of the mid-span lateral deformation, and accordingly a recommended design procedure is provided. The design procedure is further validated by numerous finite element (FE) models subjected to hysteretic and monotonic loadings, indicating that this procedure can conservatively ensure the global stability of EC-BRBs and it is suitable for practical engineering applications.
