Abstract:The research progress on energy-based seismic design method was reviewed and it was pointed out that the determination of cumulative energy dissipated by structural members based on the control of structural energy dissipation mechanism was the key to the implementation of this method. A large number of reinforced concrete frame structures were analyzed by nonlinear time-history analytical method. Then a procedure to determine the cumulative energy dissipated by different beams and columns of the structure based on the 'strong column-weak beam' energy dissipation mechanism was proposed, including the allocation of total dissipated energy between the frame beams and columns, the energy distribution along the structural height and among different structural members in the same story. Therefore, the seismic capacity design of frame beams and columns can be performed based on their dissipated energy demands and plastic deformation demands. The application of the proposed energy-based seismic design method on reinforced concrete frame structures was demonstrated by the design of a 4-story structure example. It is shown that the dissipated energy demand of the designed structure calculated by the proposed method is closed to the results by the time-history method on the safe side.
