Medical staff's risk management trainin0 and its effective evaluation

Abstract:Objectives: To increase medical staff’s risk awareness and establish the foundation of medical faults reporting system. Methods: Medical staffs (n=107) in the outpatient department of a tertiary hospital were offered with training in risk and risk management and encouraged to report medical faults or hidden risk. Questionnaire surveys were undertaken to compare the knowledge, attitudes and the behavior of the medical staffs before and after the training. The number and nature of reported faults were analyzed and compared with the complaints lodged in the same period. Results: The medical staffs had basic knowledge about medical risk before the training, but their attitudes and behavior toward risk management were poor. The training increased their knowledge about risk management significantly, but not the attitude. A total number of 53 medical faults were reported, far more than the number of lodged complaints (6 cases). However, none of the reported faults had resulted in serious consequences. Conclusions: Training is effective in increasing the knowledge levels of medical staffs about risk and risk management. But the medical staffs are concerned about potential punishment as a result of reporting faults which imposes a great challenge to the development of the medical faults reporting system.
