Abstract:In this paper, a new and efficient way to oxidize and functionalize the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) has been developed by using a combination of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and Fenton oxidation process, namely UV/Fenton oxidation treatment. Comparing with conventionally individual Fenton oxidation treatment of MWNTs, UV/Fenton combined treatment improved the etching rates and efficiencies and hence reduced the time for surface modification of MWNTs, which was proved to be an effective method in etching and functionalizing CNTs. The formation of new functional groups, structural changes and thermal stability during oxidation period were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and could be clarified by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which showed that it was under UV irradiation conditions that MWNTs could be rapidly functionalized with hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl groups in the presence of Fenton reagents, originating from the increase in the gross HO· concentration and the existent synergetic effect when using UV irradiation combing with Fenton oxidation process. Introduction of such new oxygen-containing functional groups was attributed to attacks of HO· on defect sites and unsaturated bonds of C=C in the MWNTs sample, which should play an important role in accounting for the FTIR and Raman spectral changes.

Abstract:Chemical oxidation is still the major approach to the covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Theoretically, the defects on CNTs are more reactive than skeletal hexagons and should be preferentially oxidized, but conventional oxidation methods, e.g., HNO3/H2SO4 treatment, have poor reaction selectivity and inevitably consume the C=C bonds in the hexagonal lattices, leading to structural damage, pi-electrons loss and weight decrease. In this work, we realized the nondestructive covalent functionalization of CNTs by selective oxidation of the defects. In our method, potassium ferrate (K2FeO4)-O-VI was employed as an oxidant for CNTs in H2SO4 medium. The CNT samples, before and after K2FeO4/H2SO4 treatment, were characterized with colloid dispersibility, IR, Raman spectroscopy, FESEM and XPS. The results indicated that (i) CNTs could be effectively oxidized by Fe (VI) under mild condition (60 degrees C, 3 h), and hydrophilic CNTs with abundant surface COOH groups were produced; and (ii) Fe (VI) oxidation of CNTs followed a defect-specific oxidation process, that is, only the sp3-hybridized carbon atoms on CNT surface were oxidized while the C=C bonds remained unaffected. This selective/nondestructive oxidation afforded oxidized CNTs in yields of above 100 wt%. This paper shows that K2FeO4/H2SO4 is an effective, nondestructive and green oxidation system for oxidative functionalization of CNTs and probably other carbon materials as well. Abstract:A facile scalable and low-cost gas-treatment method for selectively etching semiconductor single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is developed. Using SO3 gas as the etchant at a temperature of 400 degrees C, semiconductor SWNTs can be selectively and efficiently removed, and after this gas treatment samples enriched with metallic SWNTs can be obtained.

Abstract:Utilizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as substitutes for the conventional rigid indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, all CNT based flexible field emission devices (FEDs) were possible to prepare with a novel film transfer method. In the method, both CNT-based flexible cathode and anode were fabricated by first attaching the vacuum filtered CNT film/mixed cellulose eater (MCE) filter membrane to an adhesive semi-cured poly(dimethyl siloxane) substrate, and then peeling off the MCE filter membrane. Effects of bending direction and bending radius on field emission properties were studied. The field emission performance of the convex bending device was worse than that of the flat device and deteriorated further with the decrease of bending radius. In contrast, the concave bending device exhibited better field emission properties than the flat device; nevertheless, its field emission properties decreased as the concave bending radius reduced below a certain value. The method achieved two successes. One is that the interfacial interaction between CNT films and the flexible substrate was greatly enhanced. The other is that the transfer process improved the field emission properties due to the increase of vertically aligned CNT tips. Compared with traditional methods applied in FED preparation, the novel modified transfer method is organic free, easy to control, cheap, and environment friendly.

Abstract:SWNTs were oxidized by a simple wet chemical method involving treatment in aqueous ammonium persulfate (APS) solution at a certain temperature. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrated that a large amount of oxygen containing groups such as hydroxyl groups and carbonyl groups was attached to the sidewall of SWNTs. The oxidized SWNTs showed good solubility in polar solvents including water and DMF. Atomic force microscopic images showed that SWNTs could be cut into short pipes by the highly concentrated APS solution at 80 °C. With the decrease of reaction temperature or APS concentration, the oxidized SWNTs remained uncut.
Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes enhanced Fenton chemistry: Role of near-free iron(III) for sustainable iron(III)/iron(II) cycles

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of Fe(II) recovery strongly impedes the scientific progress of Fenton reaction (Fe(II)/H2O2) towards practical application. Here, we propose a novel mechanism that metal-free nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) can enhance Fenton chemistry with H2O2 as electron donors by elevating the oxidation potential of Fe(III). NCNT remarkably promotes the circulation of Fe(III)/Fe(II) to produce hydroxyl radical (•OH) with excellent stability for multiple usages (more than 10 cycles) in the NCNT/Fe(III)/H2O2 system. Although carbonyl on NCNT can act as the electron supplier for Fe(III) reduction, the behavior of NCNT is distinct from common reductants such as hydroxylamine and boron. Electrochemical analysis and density functional theory calculation unveil that nitrogen sites of NCNT can weakly bind with Fe(III) to elevate the oxidation potential of Fe(III) (named near-free Fe(III), primarily FeOH2+) at pH ranging from 2.0 to 4.0. Without inputs of external stimulations or electron sacrificers, near-free Fe(III) can promote H2O2 induced reduction of Fe(III) to initiate Fenton chain reactions for long-lasting generation of •OH. To our delight, it is a common property of N-doped carbon materials (e.g., graphene, carbon nanofibers, and acetylene black), our research thus provides a novel, sustainable, and green strategy for promoting Fenton chemistry.
Non-destructive and controllable catalyst deposition of in situ growing carbon nanotubes onto the carbon fibre fabric

Abstract:To in situ grow carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the surface of carbon fibre fabric (CFF) with suitable diameter and uniform distribution, controllable catalyst deposition is the key process. A controllable and non-destructive pre-treatment, that is, electrochemical oxidation pre-treatment, was explored to facilitate uniform `seeding` nano-sized catalyst particles on the surface of CFF without causing damage to carbon fibres. Main factors, such as voltage, concentration of electrolyte, electrolytic time, catalyst type and concentration of the catalyst precursor, were investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy tests indicated that voltage, concentration of electrolyte and duration of electrochemical treatment determined the distribution density of catalyst nanoparticles by controlling the concentration of the functional groups, while the diameter of catalyst particles was decided by the concentration of Fe(NO3)3 and CO(NH2)2. Besides, the diameter of catalyst particles could be modulated by adding Al(NO3)3 in the solution of the catalyst precursor. At the same time, to avoid cementite produced during the calcination and reduction process, the temperature should be controlled below 773 K. Scanning electron microscopy observations indicated that well-dispersed in situ grown CNTs could be obtained after CFF had been chemical oxidised at the voltage of 10 V for 10 s with 0.02 M NH4HCO3 as electrolyte and followed by catalyst deposition.

Abstract:The urgency to mitigate environmental impacts from anthropogenic CO2 emissions has propelled extensive research efforts on CO2 reduction. The current work reports a novel approach involving transforming CO2 and ethane into carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using earth-abundant metals (Fe, Co, Ni) at 750 °C. This route facilitates long-term carbon storage via generating high-value CNTs and produces valuable syngas with adjustable H2/CO ratios as byproducts. Without CO2, direct pyrolysis of ethane undergoes rapid deactivation. The participation of CO2 not only enhances the durability of the catalyst, but also contributes about 30% of the CNTs production, presenting a viable solution to CO2 challenges. The CNT morphology depends on the catalyst used. Co- and Ni-based catalysts produce CNT with a 20 nm diameter and micrometer length, whereas Fe-based catalysts yield bamboo-like structures. This work represents a pioneering effort in utilizing CO2 and ethane for CNT production with potential environmental and economic benefits.

Enhanced removal of Chlorofene catalyzed by a Fenton-like systemin the presence of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Recently,carbon nanotubes(CNTs)have attracted increasing attention due to their exceptional physical and chemical properties and their excellent electron transfer property in high efficient catalysts or carriers of catalysts research field.In this paper,the role of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs-COOH)played in the degradation of chlorofene(CF)by a Fenton-like system Fe3+/H2O2 was studied.The effects of reaction parameters,such as pH,Fe3+concentration,H2O2 concentration,MWCNTs-COOH concentration,and reaction temperature have also been investigated.The results indicated that the addition of MWCNTs-COOH exhibited an enhanced effect on CF oxidation,and the removal efficiency of CF increased with increasing Fe3+concentration,H2O2 concentration,and reaction temperature.The degradation pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constant of CF increased more than 20 times in the system containing 0.05 mmol·L-1 Fe3+,1.0 mmol·L-1 H2O2,0.02 mmol·L-1 CF and 4 ppm MWCNTs-COOH at 25 ℃ than that in the same system but omitting MWNCTs-COOH.In order to have a better understanding of the reaction mechanism,radical quenching assays were carried out,and electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR)technology was employed to determine the reactive oxygen species(ROS).The results suggested that hydroxyl radical(·OH)was the dominant ROS,which may be responsible for the decomposition of CF.Finally,three intermediates of CF were identified using an electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometer(TOF 5600 LC-MS).

Abstract:Few walled carbon nanotubes (FWCNTs) have been successfully synthesized using a nanoagglomerate fluidized-bed process. FWCNTs can be obtained by fluidization of Fe(Co/Ni)/Mo/MgO catalysts at a high temperature with methane cracking in a nano-agglomerate fluidizedbed reactor. The products were mainly 2 to 5 walled CNTs with an outer diameter of 1-7 nm in high purity, as revealed by Raman spectrometry, SEM, and HRTEM analysis. Two keys were crucial for this process. The first key was to get the small size of activity catalyst particles which was realized by Mo addition in catalyst. The graphitization of FWCNTs strongly depended on the composition of catalyst. Fe/Mo/MgO catalyst showed the highest activity and the FWCNT product with the best graphitization. Another key for this process was that the particles must be kept influidized state during FWCNT formation. Detailed process information was reported in this article, which showed a potential way for the large scale production of FWCNTs, thereby the urgent need for FWCNTs in high performance will be overcome.
Optimization of Electrical Intensity for Electrochemical Anodic Oxidation to Modify the Surface of Carbon Fibers and Preparation of Carbon Nanotubes/Carbon Fiber Multi-Scale Reinforcements

Abstract:Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced composites are widely used due to their excellent properties. However, the smooth surface and few functional groups of CFs can lead to fiber fractures and pullout, which reduce the service life of the composites. The overall performance of composites can be improved by growing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the CF surface. Before this, CF surface should be modified to enhance the loading amount of catalyst particles and thus make the CNTs more uniform. In this paper, CNTs were grown on a CF surface by one-step chemical vapor deposition to prepare multi-scale CNTs/CF reinforcements, and the effects of different methods on the CF surface modification were explored. After setting four intensities of electrochemical anodic oxidation, i.e., 50 C/g, 100 C/g, 150 C/g and 200 C/g, it was found that the distribution and quantity of CNTs were improved under both the 100 C/g and 150 C/g conditions. Considering the influence of electrical intensity on the (002) interplanar spacing of CFs, which affects the mechanical properties of the samples, 100 C/g was finally selected as the optimal electrochemical treatment intensity. This finding provides a reference for continuous and large-scale modification of CF surfaces to prepare CNTs/CF multi-scale reinforcements.

Abstract:Shearing the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to desired size or trimming the CNT tips conveniently is usually necessary for many applications. CNTs are normally believed possessing very high strength and toughness. In this paper we present a simple and novel method to actualize this process. In this method, aligned CNT arrays were embedded in paraffin matrix, and then the materials were carefully sliced up along the direction normal to the CNTs with a microtome. These slices consisted of vertically aligned CNTs with desired and uniform length. The experiments proved that there were enough interaction forces between the CNTs and the paraffin matrix to prevent the CNTs from being pulled out during the machining process. These sheared CNTs have shown better performance for thermal interface materials and field emission applications. This process may redound to unlocking the great potential of CNT applications.

Abstract:Metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes generally coexist in as-grown materials. We present a gas-phase plasma hydrocarbonation reaction to selectively etch and gasify metallic nanotubes, retaining the semiconducting nanotubes in near-pristine form. With this process, 100% of purely semiconducting nanotubes were obtained and connected in parallel for high-current transistors. The diameter- and metallicity-dependent “dry” chemical etching approach is scalable and compatible with existing semiconductor processing for future integrated circuits.

Abstract:Acid treatment was used to remove the Fe nanoparticles encapsulated in the carbon nanofibres grown by thermal chemical vapour deposition. Transmission electron microscopy was used to determine the structure of the carbon nanofibres. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and x-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy were employed to analyse the effect of the treatment. It was found that treatment with HCl can partially remove the Fe nanoparticles on tips. Treatment using a mixture of HNO3 and H2SO4 is an effective way to remove the Fe nanoparticles on tips. Also, the tips of carbon nanofibres having Fe nanoparticles seem to be more stable against O-2 plasma etching than the bodies of the carbon nanofibres. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Due to their outstanding electronic, optical and mechanical properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are studied extensively recently, but their poor dispersibility in solvent and bad compatibility with other materials critically limit their application, many approaches and methods for functionalization of CNTs have been reported to solve these problems. All kinds of methods to modification of CNTs with free radical reaction are reviewed in this paper, which include small molecules and macromolecules reaction. Small molecular reaction includes diazonium salts, initiator decompose free radicals, carbene free radicals, and nitrene free radicals. Macromolecules grafting include ATRP, RAFT, NMP, Ce(IV) ions initiation polymerizaiton, in situ bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, precipitation polymerization, emulsion polymerization, soap-free emulsion polymerization and so on. In this paper, the free radicals generated by other methods to functionalize CNTs are also reviewed briefly.

Abstract:Nanomanipulation plays an important role in nanofabrication, it is also a technology necessary in exploring the secrets of nanoworld, and it thus becomes a start point to research future nanomachine. In this study, manipulation and cutting of carbon nanotubes have been conducted in order to examine whether we can move a nanocomponent from one site to another by using the tip of atomic force microscope (AFM). The technique may also be valuable for providing the constructive materials of nanofabrication. While exploring the method for manipulating and cutting of nanotubes, some new phenomena have been observed during the process. Results show that carbon nanotubes present a feature of deformation combining bending and distortion when subjected to large mechanical forces exerted by the tip of AFM. In special cases, long carbon nanotubes can be cut into two parts, by which we can remove the part where crystal lattice is flawed, and therefore a perfect nanocomponent can be obtained.

Abstract:The invention relates to an electrochemical modification treatment method of carbon fiber surface. The electrochemical modification treatment method comprises the steps of: modifying carbon nanotubes by adopting a nitric acid and sulfuric acid chemical oxidization method or an electrochemical method; dissolving modified carbon nanotubes in ethanol, acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, tetrahydrofuran, protoporphyrin disodium, carbon tetrachloride, petroleum ether, acetone, chloroform or water, and carrying out ultrasonic treatment or stirring to form uniformly dispersed emulsion or suspension so as to prepare an electrolyte solution containing 0.01-10 mg/mL of carbon nanotubes; and applying voltage or current on a carbon fiber electrode in the electrolyte solution containing the carbon nanotubes with carbon fiber as an anode electrode and a conductive metal or graphite material as a cathode electrode while controlling the temperature of the electrolyte solution at 20-80 DEG C, then cleaning and drying. The electrochemical modification treatment method provided by the invention has the advantages of being simple, practical and capable of being industrialized.

Abstract:Different acid oxidation methods were systematically carried out to purify the SWNTs synthesized by CVD. The results show that the best purification process can produce over 98% pure single-wall carbon nanotubes within 2 h. In this process, it is found by Raman characterization that the amount of nanotubes with small diameters do not diminish within 3 h.

Abstract:Gaseous effluents from carbon fiber (CF) production process contain a mixture of compounds, in which hydrogen cyanide (HCN), an extremely toxic gas accounts for the largest proportion, together with ammonia, oxocarbon and hydrocarbons. In this work, the successful recovery of gas wastes via the CF loading with iron nanoparticles deposition as catalysts was proved by studying the various stages in the continuous carbonization process of precursor fibers. Significantly, up to 61.2% of HCN during the entire carbonization process (300–1000 °C) is converted into nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in-situ on CF surface (). In addition, carbon dioxide and ammonia are also notably reduced at certain temperature ranges. The effect of the gaseous effluents, iron nanoparticles and process parameters on the development of CNT surface morphology as well as structural quality was comprehensively studied. Moreover, the optimized hybrid structure of CNTs created onto CF surface contributes to noteworthy interfacial property improvement (95%) of structural composite and improved reversible capacity (96 F/g at 1 A/g) and exceptional cycling performance of supercapacitors. This work reveals a facile in-situ technique for efficiently recycling the toxic gas emissions of CF production as well as synthesizing multifunctional nanomaterials at a large scale.
