Abstract:Contemporary academia have reached one thing in common on Chinese rural political studies,that is the ideal type of binary opposition analytical framework on the state and society is not appropriate on Chinese rural study;in China,the state and society is always interdependent,they together create local social orders with strong Chinese features.In interactive social order system,those grass root cadres play very important roles,and construct the special relationship between common peasants and the state,and in the mean time,formed uniqueness of rural social development at different historical time.The article analyzes the interactions between state and society based on every practice of rural grass root cadres,tries to reflect on four historical stages with distinct features,on the roles they played,their behaviors at each stage,uncovers the historical transition on rural society and state power since the establishment of the People's Republic of China.

Abstract:<span><em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">In Governance, Domestic Change and Social Policy in China,</em>the contributing authors cover 7 different aspects of China from the Republic of China (ROC: 1912–49); Socialist China (PRC: 1949–79) and China under Reform and Economic Opening (PRC: 1978–2017) in seven chapters. The editors, Blanchard and Lin, introduced the book with a historical perspective. Contrary to the state-society dichotomy, the authors brought forward the interstices which suggest four major expectations in Chinese politics under comparative historical analysis: firstly, the conflicts as well as compromises between state actors and societal interests exist in different arenas. Secondly, organized social interests do not intrinsically seek autonomy or resist extension of state leverages over the operations of NGOs. Thirdly, "State in Society" matters as state power stems directly from the evolving social structures. Abstract:Land reform in the Liberated Areas during the three-year civil war between the Communists and the Nationalists brought fundamental changes to China's traditional social, political and economic order, and posed new challenges to the ability of the CPC (Communist Party of China) to direct and control the situation. The rectification of base-level cadres in rural areas was an important link in the CPC's response to this challenge. The desire to establish a democratic government, the will of the masses, the call for clean government and the practice of grouping people by class in the rectification movement clearly point to the CPC's ideals and demands for a new society. While revealing its outstanding capacity for control, the process and results of rectification also presented the CPC as a political force on the way to holding power. Faced with complex social and political issues, the CPC was still in the course of building up its theoretical foundation and practical experience; gaining an understanding of China's changing society would be a long-term process.

The transformation of the village collective in urbanising China: A historical institutional analysis

Abstract:The reform era in China has been characterised by rapid territorial processes that have advanced the reach of the urban for furthering capital accumulation. As borders were redrawn to enlarge cities by incorporating the surrounding countryside, villages located at the rural-urban interface have found themselves absorbed and administratively converted into urban neighbourhoods. Economic restructuring and territorial remaking have further removed all structural traces of rurality from these physically vanished villages. Despite the magnitude of change, however, the institutional arrangements that define and maintain the village as a collective community of interests have remained effective. Drawing on the analytical framework of historical institutionalism, this paper treats the Chinese village as a historical entity emerging from socialist collectivisation and examines how the socialist institutions of collective property and redistributive mechanisms have continued to persist in the reform-era village. Through shareholding reform and subsequent corporatisation, the village as a collective has been preserved and reconsolidated through the renewal and revitalisation of inherited institutional arrangements. An examination of the resilience of the village collective in urbanising China not only sheds light on the structures and processes of power that have contributed to its continued vitality, but also generates insight into how the “village” or the “rural” should be conceived of in the context of rapid administrative, economic and territorial transformation.

Abstract:Manrong,a typical Chinese Korean Village located in Dongling District,Shenyang,has reaped great benefits in the New Socialist Countryside Building.It has given full play to the leading effect of the grassroots Party organizations,made the spiritual civilization construction of new rural area effective,highlighted the characteristics of the Chinese Korean culture,established the open thought of the New Countryside Building,given prominence to regional economic characteristics,stimulated the economic vitality of the New Socialist Countryside Building,adhered to scientific development of the rural ecological environment,planned and constructed a New Socialist Countryside of a high standard.Meanwhile,it faces prominent social security problems,such as fast economic development,but unreasonable industrial structure;the urgency to further improve the ecological,living and production environment etc.The authors put forward a plan with a variety of policies to improve the social security mechanism,advise enough support on taxation policies to promote independent innovation of township enterprises,suggest giving full play to the characteristics of national culture,speeding up the construction of new socialist countryside,improve the quality of ecological environment and create a new living and productive environment.

Abstract:Abstract The famous sociologist, economist, and historian Chen Han-seng was the founder of the Agrarian China Research Association, publishing influential studies on industrial production and class relations, and their effect on peasant living standards. Through the Institute of Pacific Relations ( ipr ), Chen engaged in a theoretical dialogue with liberal intellectuals and responded to American, British, and Soviet theories about Chinese society and rural China. Unlike American ipr scholars, such as John Lossing Buck, whose agenda was to investigate the consumer power of Chinese peasants, Chen’s study of living standards emphasized their production capability and the role usury played in it. And unlike the ipr British economists, such as R. H. Tawney, who were generally optimistic about Chinese rural industry, Chen’s research proved Chinese industrialization to be unsustainable and to lower peasant living standards. In reaction to these American and British scholars, Chen tactically changed his concept of “living standards” and developed his own theory of Chinese rural economics.
