Abstract:The field distributions of MMD type and MW type multipole permanentmagnets are calculated by means of programme POISCR and the results aresummarized and discussed in this paper. The results show that, considering thenonlinearity of the real demagnetization curve of permanent magnet material, thefield distributions of both types of permanent magnets with the same aperatureare about the same but the field strength of MW type magnet with soft ironshield is higher than that of MMD type magnet.

Abstract:The magnetic field distributions of modulating thickness permanent magnets [1,2] are discussed in this paper. The field distributions are calculated by using the program POISCR and the actual demagnetization curve of the REC permanent magnet material. The results show that the performance of the MT type magnets is about the same as or even better than that of the modulating magnetization direction type (MMD) [3] and that the MT type magnet with soft iron shield requires less REC material than MMD type magnets.

Abstract:Dual permanent magnet (PM) machines synthesize two PM excitations together and potentially exhibit higher torque density than conventional single-PM excited machines. In dual-PM excited machines, the existence of one PM excitation tends to cause interior flux density reduction and irreversible demagnetization of the other PM set, and this feature is recognized as cross-coupling demagnetization. Therefore, this article systematically analyzed the mechanism and influence of this unique phenomenon in a dual-PM prototype machine. The results reveal that the cross-coupling demagnetization can result in up to 18% torque reduction under a severe working conditions if the machine is not properly designed. Increasing one set of PM thickness along the magnetization direction is beneficial to enhance the self-demagnetization withstanding ability, whereas the cross-coupling demagnetization on the other PM set has deteriorated. In order to eliminate such a side effect, some techniques, e.g., removing the demagnetization region and alleviating the mutual flux path, are presented to suppress the demagnetization. It is revealed that the demagnetization rate can be reduced to less than 3% with proper design. Finally, a dual-PM prototype is manufactured and tested to validate the improvement of demagnetization withstanding capability by using the presented suppression technique.

Abstract:Permanent-magnet vernier machine (PMVM) is a relatively new type of PM machines. An analytical subdomain model accounting for tooth-tips and flux modulation poles is developed to accurately predict on-load field distributions in PMVMs. Based on two-dimensional (2-D) polar coordinate and magnetic vector potential, this method solves the Maxwell's equations in slot, air-gap, flux modulation pole slot (FMPS), and PM regions. Consequently, the electromagnetic performance such as cogging torque, back-electromotive force (EMF), electromagnetic torque, power factor, and magnet loss are calculated. In addition, the model can also be used for the evaluation of demagnetization withstand capability. The finite-element analysis (FEA) and experimental results validate the accuracy of the developed analytical model.

Abstract:This paper develops an analytical model for predicting the magnetic field, back-electromotive force (EMF), and electromagnetic torque of surface-mounted permanent magnet machines accounting for magnet geometrical shaping and varied magnet property distribution. The magnets on the rotor are represented by the remanence, thickness, and magnetization direction functions. They are finitely segmented into magnet pieces of simple regular shape and uniform magnet property. The magnetic field of the machine is obtained by the superposition of the magnetic field due to each segment. The back-EMF and electromagnetic torque are also calculated. Using the developed model, the technique of mixed magnet material is investigated on a four-pole/six-slot machine. The analytical predictions are verified by both finite element and experimental results.

Abstract:In this paper,the magnetic field distribution of the modulating width multipole perma-nent magnets is analyzed.Only radially magnetized permanent magnet segments are used andthe required magnetic field is formed by modulating the widths of the segments in this project.In 2-dimensional ideal case pure 2N-pole magnetic field can be formed.The spatial expres-sions of the scalar potential for the ideal and real 2-dimensional cases are given.And the me-thods for reducing the undesirable higher harmonics of the magnetic field in the real case arealso discussed.

Abstract:The novel doubly salient slot permanent magnet linear machines (DSSPMLMs) are proposed in this paper. First, the topology and geometric parameters of the DSSPMLMs with 12 slots are introduced, and the corresponding basic operating principle is investigated. Then, feasible slot/pole combinations and winding configurations are further analyzed. To the DSSPMLMs with 12 slots, all structures with 10/11/13/14 poles and double layer (DL)/single layer (SL) winding are optimized. Finally, the electromagnetic performance including open-circuit and static force-current characteristics are comparatively studied using 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA). The results show that the optimal slot/pole combination is 12-slots/13-poles (12s/13p) and the DL winding exhibits lower force ripple while relatively lower thrust force capability than SL winding at low electrical loadings.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel double-magnetic-source magnetic circuit (DMSMC) with pole shoes (PS) in order to achieve high and uniform air-gap magnetic field in an angular vibration exciter. First, the structure of the DMSMC with PS is proposed based on the demand of the angular displacement of 60 ffi, in which the four pair of permanent magnets are adopted. After that, the DMSMC is modeled and analyzed theoretically by the equivalent circuit method, which has been verified that the magnetic circuit structure can realize high magnetic flux density (MFD) in the axial air-gap. To improve the uniformity of the MFD, the DMSMC with PS is proposed and the role of PS is analyzed by the principle of magnetic flux refraction. Then, the influence factors of the MFD in the air-gap, such as the permanent magnet with or without PS, the parameters of the magnet and the PS, are analyzed with the finite element method. The simulation results demonstrate that the optimized DMSMC with PS can obtain high and uniform MFD in the air-gap. Finally, the experimental results for the angular vibration exciter prototype prove to be well consistent with the simulation results, which further verify the validity of the proposed magnetic circuit structure.
Magnet circuit design and optimization of giant magnetostrictive transducer

Abstract:To optimize the electromagnetic performance of giant magnetostrictive transducer, the effects of coil's geometry and magnetic circuit components on the transducer's magnetic field characteristics and displacement output were studied, and the magnetic circuit's loss and the gap's magnetic permeability were also analyzed. The appropriate coil structure parameters were presented, and an optimized design scheme was proposed in which pure iron with high magnetic permeability was attached to both ends of the giant magnetostrictive material (GMM) to reduce loss. Both finite element simulation and experimental analysis were conducted to study the effects of different magnet circuit design schemes on the transducer's performance. The results indicate that attaching pure iron to both ends of the GMM can enhance the working magnetic field, reduce the magnetic flux leakage, and increase the displacement output with reduced current in coil, thus improve the thermal condition of the transducer.

Abstract:The permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) with fractional slot per pole is widely applied in high speed digital machine tool and processing equipment of semiconductor due to many advantages such as short end of winding, low copper loss, high thrust force density and so on. Since the force performance closely depends on the structure, the different structures are investigated in detail. To typical slots/poles combinations 12/11 and 12/10, eight feasible structures are described, which adopt single-sided or double-sided and all-teeth wounded winding or alternate-teeth wounded winding. Their FEM models are erected, and the magnetic field, thrust force and normal force of each optimized structure are obtained. By comparison, the optimal structures for single-sided and double-sided are separately found according to the high thrust force and low thrust ripple. To optimal PMLSM of double-sided structure supplied with two kinds of powers, the suppression of thrust ripple is analyzed when permanent magnets of two sides or mover armature in two ends are shifted a certain angle.
A Novel Structure of Doubly Salient Permanent Magnet Machine

Abstract:Because permanent magnet (PM) penetrates into the slot, three phases of doubly salient PM machine (DSPMM) employing inner type flux focusing method have imbalanced slot areas in the conventional design. To enhance its torque performance, this paper proposes a novel structure, of which the side tooth next to the PM has two parts. Its tooth body is parallel to the middle tooth between two PMs, while the tooth-tips of all teeth are still kept uniformly distributed on the stator bore. The position of the tooth body of side tooth is optimized to have the balanced slot areas. The main parameters of the novel structure together with two conventional structures are globally optimized under the fixed copper loss and stator outer radius. Their performance comparison shows that by using the proposed structure, the average torque is increased by 25%-31%, while the ratio of torque to cross-section area is increased by 17%-25%.

Abstract:This article investigates and compares the electromagnetic performance of two novel hybrid-magnetic-circuit variable flux memory machines (HMC-VFMMs) with different hybrid permanent magnet (PM) configurations. The investigated HMC-VFMMs are both geometrically characterized by a combination of series and parallel magnetic circuit topologies, but with different positions of series and parallel PM branches. The developed HMC design can combine the merits of wide flux adjustment range in parallel structure and excellent unintentional demagnetization withstand capability in series structure. The topologies, features, and working principles of the studied HMC-VFMMs with different hybrid magnet configurations are described, respectively. The magnetic circuit model is utilized to analytically reveal the performance metrics of the two machines. The electromagnetic characteristics of the radially magnetized (RM) and circumferentially magnetized LCF types of HMC-VFMMs are evaluated and compared by the finite-element method. Furthermore, the performance comparison of the proposed RM-type HMC-VFMM with a benchmark interior PM machine is conducted. The experiments on RM-type HMC-VFMM prototype with RM-structure are carried out to validate the FE analyses.

The advantage of this new integrated configuration includes not only the characters of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), but also the features of the no-contact transmission permanent magnet gear. Its topology and operation principle are introduced. Some techniques are employed to optimize and improve the motor performance, whilst validity of the proposed techniques is verified with finite element analysis (FEA).

Abstract:This article systematically investigates the field and force modulation effects on magnetic field, radial force, and electromagnetic vibration behaviors of a dual permanent magnet vernier machine (DPMVM). Firstly, the topology and working principle of the DPMVM are analyzed by artfully decoupling it into a permanent magnet vernier machine and a permanent magnet flux reverse machine. Subsequently, the magnetic field modulation effect of DPMVM with a doubly salient pole structure is investigated. The spatial order, speed, and frequency of the abundant magnetic field harmonics affected by rotor modulation and stator modulation are summarized. Afterward, the extraordinary behaviors of radial force harmonics and electromagnetic vibration of the DPMVM are studied, in which the magnetic field and force modulation effects are considered. The result shows that the combined effect of field modulation and force modulation is the trigger for the severe vibration of DPMVM. Finally, a prototype of DPMVM is fabricated, and several experiments are conducted to validate the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Two novel structures of permanent magnet (PM) machine, namely a hybrid excitation flux modulation machine (HEFMM) and a variable flux memory machine (VFMM), which have excellent field-weakening capability, are presented in this paper. The HEFMM incorporates the advantages of parallel hybrid excitation structure and flux modulation structure, so as to increase the torque density as well as increase the constant-power speed range. Inspired by the HEFMM, aiming to further improve the efficiency of machine, the VFMM with aluminum-nickel-cobalt (AlNiCo) PMs in the inner stator which can be magnetized by the current pulse of the direct current (DC) windings is developed. With double-stator structure, flux modulation effect in both machines can be employed to realize the hybrid excitation and regulate the air-gap flux density readily. The operation principle is illustrated and the static and steady performances of the machines are analyzed and compared with time stepping finite element analysis, which validates the effectiveness of the proposed designs.

In-Plane Magnon Valve Effect in Magnetic Insulator/Heavy Metal/ Magnetic Insulator Device

Abstract:We propose an in-plane magnon valve (MV), a sandwich structure composed of ferromagnetic insulator/heavy metal/ferromagnetic insulator (MI/HM/MI). When the magnetizations of the two MI layers are parallel, the longitudinal conductance in the HM layer is greater than that in the antiparallel state according to the magnetic proximity effect, termed as the in-plane magnon valve effect. We investigate the dependence of MV ratio (MVR), which is the relative change in longitudinal conductance between the parallel and antiparallel MV states, on the difference in electronic structure between magnetized and non-magnetized metal atoms, revealing that MVR can reach 100%. Additionally, the dependence of MVR on the thickness of metal layer is analyzed, revealing an exponential decrease with increasing thickness. Then we investigate the dependence of HM layer conductance on the relative angle between the magnetizations of two MI layers, illustrating the potential of MV as a magneto-sensitive magnonic sensor. We also investigate the effect of Joule heating on the measurement signal based on the spin Seebeck effect. Two designed configurations are proposed according to whether the electron current is parallel or perpendicular to the magnetization of the MI layer. In the parallel configuration, the transverse voltage differs between the parallel and antiparallel MV states. While in the perpendicular configuration, the longitudinal resistance differs. Quantitative numerical results indicate the feasibility of detecting a voltage signal using the first configuration in experiments. Abstract:As compared to traditional magnets, permanent magnets can effectively reduce energy consumption and eliminate the impact of current ripple and the water cooling system on beam current. The use of permanent magnets in accelerators has become a new trend as permanent magnet technology has advanced. In HALF (Hefei Advanced Light Facility), we have designed a permanent magnet based on the quadrupole magnet, and the central magnetic field strength of the permanent magnet can be adjusted, indicating that single or multiple permanent magnets can be developed to replace different sizes of quadrupole magnets in accelerators, greatly improving systematization. The magnet's mechanical design has been finalized, and the prototype of the permanent magnet will be manufactured and tested soon.

Abstract:A modular permanent magnet (MPM) machine is a remerging fault tolerant machine, offering the advantages of fault tolerance, high power density and high efficiency. In this paper, the analytical design of a MPM motor with halbach PM array is investigated and a general design procedure is presented. Moreover, finite element method (FEM) is adopted to compare the electromagnetic performance of the designed machine with that of the conventional one, including flux density, PM fluxes and back-EMF. Furthermore, a co-simulation model of the MPM motor drive is developed to predict the system perform, in which magnetic circuit and the electric circuit are coupled in time-domain. Finally, the designed four-phase MPM motor is prototyped and test. The experimental results are given to verify the theoretical analysis.
