Abstract:This paper proposes a new reading of Ruan Ji’s Essay on Zhuangzi.Scholars have argued that Ruan’s essay honored Taoist spontaneity and criticized Confucian moral teachings.However,this paper argues that written around 247,Ruan’s essay actually offered a fresh interpretation of Zhuang Zi’s philosophy in that it considered the idea of equality of all things as the main thread that underlies Zhuang Zi’s thought.Thus Ruan attempted to harmonize the “inner-worldly” Confucian moral teachings and the “other-worldly”Taoist pursuit of spontaneity.In this regard,Ruan’s understanding of Zhuangzi anticipated the interpretations of Xiang Xiu and Guo Xiang on Zhuangzi that came decades later.

Abstract:Mengzi’s theory of human nature is one of the most fascinating narratives in traditional Chinese intellectual history. His arguments are ambitious, have moral power, and contains philosophical implications. Mengzi made use of metaphors and analogies such as water, plants, and dogs to illustrate his ideas and theory of human nature vividly. All of these helped him to compete with the ideas of others such as Gaozi and SHI Shuo. Many ideas of his still play an important role in the daily life of Chinese people, and billions of people use and sing slogans quoted from Mengzi without being aware of it. Different theories have also been developed based on Mengzi’s theory, such as “human nature is originally good” and “human nature tends toward goodness.” We will explore the philosophical and historical aspects of Mengzi’s theory of human nature. Kongzi (Confucius) did not say directly what human nature exactly is, and it was Mengzi who laid the milestone for the Confucian theory of human nature and henceforth provided a new horizon for the Chinese theory of human nature.

Abstract:The issue of human nature or xing 性 was a major philosophical topic of the mid- and late-Warring States period of ancient China. It was famously discussed, for example, in the Mencius . Zhuangzi 莊子 lived around the same time as Mencius and one might expect that he, too, would have discussed it. Surprisingly, the term xing is absent from the Inner Chapters of the Zhuangzi . There have been different responses to this, namely, that Zhuangzi: used different terms equivalent to xing ; believed that human nature is bad (despite not mentioning xing ); was deliberately silent on xing as an oblique way of criticizing others such as Mencius. I review these claims and provide an analysis of how xing was mainly conceptualized during the Warring States period in essentialist terms. I shall read Zhuangzi's philosophy as transcending this conceptual framework. Instead of a theory of human nature, Zhuangzi provides stories and descriptions of the different facets of human behavior and their psychological and other complexities. These often have an epistemic focus that stand independently of any theory of human nature.

Abstract:This article investigates the thought of the mid-Tang scholar monk Shenqing through an examination of his Beishan lu. In this work, Shenqing launched a fervent attack against Southern Chan, while pressing for the harmonization of the Three Teachings. His critique of Southern Chan reflects his Theravadin tendency, as he expressed negative views about Southern Chan's violation of traditional Buddhist teachings. He specifically attacked its de-emphasis on the vinaya, and the fabrication of the 28-Patriarchs theory of transmission. In an effort to establish the orthodoxy of Southern Chan in early Northern Song, Chan clerics found it necessary to respond to Shenqing's critique, as clearly reflected in the writings of the monk Qisong. Beishan lu is a valuable source for a study of Shenqing's thought, and the unfolding of the harmonization of the Three Teachings. It also allows us to trace the historical unfolding of the Southern Chan movement from a different perspective.

Revisiting the Exchange between Zhuangzi and Huizi on Qing

Abstract:In this article we focus on the famous dialogue between Zhuangzi 莊子 and Huizi 惠子 concerning the question whether or not ren 人 (in particular the shengren 聖人) have qing 情. Most scholars have understood qing in this exchange as referring to "feelings" or "emotions." We take issue with such readings. First, we demonstrate that, while Huizi probably understands qing as something like feelings or emotions, Zhuangzi's view is that having qing is connected with making shifei 是非 judgments whereas having no qing means that shifei has no grip on those ren, especially the shengren. What follows is that the expression wuqing 無情 should not be identified as a "doctrine of nonemotion." Instead, wuqing implies that Zhuangzi advises us to lead a life of tranquility, calmness, and stillness. We show that these peaceful attitudes are associated with the idea of wuwei 無為 in the Zhuangzi.

Abstract:Huang Zongxi’s innovations in Confucian thought are almost responses to the major problems of the philosophical dialogue between Confucian scholars and missionaries.In terms of ontology,by learning from the ontological discussion of Western philosophy on God,he illustrated the ancient Chinese idea of God against Christianity’s personalization of God and tried to reconcile the conflict between the belief in God and the Confucian filial piety;in terms of theory of human nature and life philosophy,by learning from the methodology of Western philosophy,he proposed a new way of understanding universality and particularity and believed the souls of people with high ideals are immortal;in terms of epistemology,he made a comprehensive critique of the superstition of Xiang and Shu that hindered scientific development and the assumption in which a priori moral order is attached to the Nature,advocated that extension of knowledge lies in the investigation of things and put forth the pluralist academic view;in terms of the clash between Chinese and Western culture,he had both a distinct and firm stance of Chinese Culture Standard and a clear awareness.Huang Zongxi’s rational attitude should be fully approved since he enriched and developed Chinese philosophy by learning from Western philosophy.

Abstract:From antiquity to the Jin Dynasty, the thoughts of interaction between Heaven and humans experienced several changes, Shan Hai Jing or The Classics of Mountains and Seas was classifi ed as the witchcraft type in History of the Han Dynasty. Guo Pu's thoughts of interaction between Heaven and Humans could be divided into two modes:basic mode and special mode. The theoretical foundation was theories of qi, deity and Heaven or the combination of the three. There were some metaphysical thoughts his thoughts, showing that he was also a student of metaphysics. He chose the "little tradition" by abandoning the "great tradition" was due to his academic traditions and political ideals. He inherited the Confucian traditions from the Han dynasty. In spite of his evasive thoughts, he still played an active role in politics, using the theory of interaction between Heaven and humans to limit emperor s' power. He thought that he should do something benefi cial to the country and the people, so he urged Wen Qiao and Yu Liang to defend Wang Dun through divination, but ended up in losing his own life.

Abstract:By means of textual research,the paper probes into the innermost world of a Shanghai Catholic scholar Xu Zuanzeng(1627-1698).The paper argues that Xu represented the second generation of one of the most well-known Christian families in Shanghai,that in comparison with his ancestry,there was not too much contradiction between Chinese and Western cultures in his heart,that as a result of not adhering to one religion,his life-guide was made up of different values and believes,and that the Catholic influence in his inner world could be analyzed in the deep context which was composed of his life,his family,his works,and his relations with others.

Abstract:The doctrine of Xin Zhu (形著说),though one of the constituent parts of Mou Zongsan’ Confucianist thoughts, has been seldom studied in a systematic way so far. The present paper is, therefore, meant to query this well-known point of view so as to usher in a new phase in Mou Zongsan studies. And the conclusion is that this doctrine is meanwhile of important theoretical significances, yet it fails to adopt a valid approach at the very beginning. As a result, not only it cannot crack the hard nuts in theory, but also involves itself in redundancy and repetition.

Abstract:This paper points out more than 20 commentaries on Zhen Chuan's essays (essays written by Gui Youguang) in the Qing Dynasty and summarizes the major characteristics of his essays, which are concerned with life and kinship and which are structured like stories with prosaic plots, before it fully ascertains their status in the history of Chinese prose. The paper analyzes some of the main arguments which deny the value of Zhen Chuan's essays and assesses Gui Youguang in a new light. The writer of this paper argues that Gui Youguang was a pioneer who played a key role in the process of literary transformation where Chinese prose changed from topics of officials to those of folks, from mixed to pure literature, and from ancient literature to modern literature. If he is assessed in the light of his capacity as such a pioneer, it seems plausible that Gui Youguang can never be over-evaluated.

Abstract:In this paper the author aims to explore the philosophical essence presented in Qi Wu Lun of ZhuangZi and discusses some approaches to better understanding the subtleness of the theme and different interpretations of some key concepts in Qi Wu Lun.The author goes further by making a comparative study between some seemingly contradictory concepts presented by Qi Wu Lun and Xiao yao you respectively and reveals a fundamental harmony between them.Finally,the author proposes some reading strategies for understanding of philosophical ideas in ZhuangZi: start with the fables first and then study the inertial articles,the most recommendable of which is to read Qi Wu Lu and Xiao yao you comparatively so as to develop one's concrete and abstract logic reasoning competency.

Abstract:This paper examines the idea of “following nature” in two classical Chinese thinkers, Mengzi and Zhuangzi. The goal is to complicate appeals to “following nature” in Asian thought and to problematize the very imposition of the concept “nature” on Zhuangzi and Mengzi. The paper begins by establishing some common ground between Mengzi and Zhuangzi, based on two points—both view harmony with tian (heaven/nature) as a primary aspect of living well, and both require a process of self-transformation to reach this harmony. The second part of the paper argues that Mengzi and Zhuangzi give different answers to a similar question. That question is, what does it means to follow or be in harmony with tian? The essay concludes with some reflections on how “following nature” in Zhuangzi and Mengzi might apply to environmental ethics.
