Abstract:In the newly excavated epitaphs, there are three concerned Liu Changqing, a famous poet in the middle Tang dynasty. Depending on the epitaphs and other presented documents, we can further discuss several problems about Liu Changqing’s life story. First, he was the chief military officer in Junyi county, Chenliu prefecture. Secondly, the date of his success in the highest imperial examination is determined with the new proofs. Thirdly, the time when he was the imperial supervisor can be determined now. Fourthly the time when he became the Zhuanyun judge of E-yue is cleared.

Abstract:From 1929 till 1931, some members of Xin Association, Hu Shi, Luo Longji, Liang Shiqiu, etc., established Ping Association. With Xin Yue as position, they mobilized famous Rights Activities, attacked Nationalist Party's admonitory politics system, requested human rights of democratic constitutionalism, and published The Collection of Works on Human Rights. In late, weak and compromised Chinese bourgeois liberalist activities, and with the late declaration of human rights, Hu Shi and his friends publicized thoughts on right of freedom from human rights' point of view. In other words, it could be said that it was result of direct connections between Chinese and Western thinkers. However, since Nationalist Party could not accept their thoughts and activities, finally Hu Shi was rebuked by Educational Department. And in 1930, he was removed from position as President of Zhongguo Gongxue by Nationalist Government.

Abstract:Taking “Tian Di Zhi Xing”as the basis of “Goodness”and “Xing Qi qing”as the approach for Gong Fu,the Interpretation of Hu Yuan about ZhongYong has begun from Xing & Qing,from this, he has begun the main direction of argument of Zhang Zai,two Cheng Brothers and Zhu Xi.From the his-tory of Jing Xue,his commentary on ZhongYong shows a clear trend that it is to interpret classics with philosophical connotations.Therefore,we can say,as the origin of the Study of ZhongYong during Song Dynasty's Confucianism,the interpretation of Hu Yuan about ZhongYong is not such rich and deep as Zhang Zai and Two Cheng Brothers,but he has indeed led the thinking way for his generation.And the significance is above the content itself.

Abstract:Some scholars recently compared the chapter 9 in the volume 8 Tai-bo of the Confucian book Lun Yu (this chapter formerly translated as: Confucius remarked:' The common should be educated in what they ought to do, not to ask why they should do it' ) with the new discovered Confucian literature at Guodian Chu bamboo slips excavated in 1993, and they raised some new interpretations for this chapter. They insist that the topic of this chapter don' t compel the by ethic or teach the by the ruler's own example or the should not be taught to be wise. But each of those interpretations is not completely convincible. After a strictly study, an interpretation made in 1994 is still be verified as a right one. This interpretation says: how to use people is the main topic of the chapter.

Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.

Abstract:The idea of Zhong Zhi He(holding the middle so as to achieve is an important ideological resource for the construction of a harmonious society.He implies the harmonization of different sounds to generate beautiful music.When men realizes the principle that harmony is conducive to the generation of all things;uniformity will stop the development, they would apply this principle to the field of cognition,law,politics,ethics,and aesthetics to coordinate forces of different interest groups so that the goal of Da He(big harmony) could be achieved.The original seal character for Zhong(the middle) was in the form of a royal flag,denoting the middle way of the law.Later it began to mean the ethic righteousness and the uprightness of personality.Zhi Zhong Zhi He thus implies that the rulers should be righteous and upright so that they could position different forces appropriately with the right law.Zhi Zhong(holding the middle) is a principle for the ruler.Those who help the ruler to realize his aim of achieving harmony,however,might ingratiate themselves with the ruler once they become members of the bureaucracy and disrupt the stability of the ruling power and the constraint of rationality,resulting in social turmoil.After a long cycle of turbulent history, the mass overthrew the monarchy in the democratic revolution.Today when we make use of the idea of Zhong Zhi He to construct a harmonious society,we must trace the origin of this principle so that we could avoid its historical limitations and revitalize its power.

Abstract:Though opinions vary about the redaction of Zhou Guan,it is more evidently proved that the redaction was in Hejian where writing then just appeared.Zhou Guan propagates Zhou sys- tem,but in reality it advocates for Hart legislation.While its feudality is what may be called Great Unified Feudality,its system is civilian governance by six ministers,in which the royalty is much respected,and the power of the kingdom,on the other hand,is firmly retained with- in.An attempt can be seen in which a society with a dual political structure,i.e.a spiritual order of morality and a legal order of governance,is much desired.This kind of society is a predecessor of monarchy.To strengthen the system,Zhou Guan lays emphasis on the Harmony of Heaven and Rites,insisting the whole universe should be subjected to the norm of rites. This idea is echoed in such Hejian Confucian classics as Mao Shi,Zuoshi Chunqiu and Yue Ji.This paper tends to categorize all these into what could be described as the"Theory of Heaven and Rites".

Abstract:Huang Zongxi’s innovations in Confucian thought are almost responses to the major problems of the philosophical dialogue between Confucian scholars and missionaries.In terms of ontology,by learning from the ontological discussion of Western philosophy on God,he illustrated the ancient Chinese idea of God against Christianity’s personalization of God and tried to reconcile the conflict between the belief in God and the Confucian filial piety;in terms of theory of human nature and life philosophy,by learning from the methodology of Western philosophy,he proposed a new way of understanding universality and particularity and believed the souls of people with high ideals are immortal;in terms of epistemology,he made a comprehensive critique of the superstition of Xiang and Shu that hindered scientific development and the assumption in which a priori moral order is attached to the Nature,advocated that extension of knowledge lies in the investigation of things and put forth the pluralist academic view;in terms of the clash between Chinese and Western culture,he had both a distinct and firm stance of Chinese Culture Standard and a clear awareness.Huang Zongxi’s rational attitude should be fully approved since he enriched and developed Chinese philosophy by learning from Western philosophy.

Abstract:Mencius' theory of human nature is none other than that of the unified virtues of heaven-human according to his advocacy of idea that man is born with goodness and heaven is created with goodness. Mencius argues that self-cultivation hinges on more attention paid to goodness and fewer done to desires, and further stresses the importance of self-reflection of failures. The theory of goodness seeking and desirability constitutes the Mencius' theory of being good. The details of human's goodness can be seen in the paragon behaviors illustrated and regulated by Mencius. His value orientation describes that one should devote himself to goodness even at cost of life, which is demonstrated by his discourse on the thoughts of life for justice and the invincible government by benevolence. The idea of benevolence and love that is representative of the theory of all minds for goodness, is bestowed to people by Mencius as a guide of pursuit of faith. The concept of way in Mencius will brighten the present-day and future China and world with its timeless, borderless, and everlasting charm.

Abstract:The essence of Wei Yuan's political theory focuses on "Huang-Lao Thought" fundamentals of flexible policy,but examining its times background and gist is still insufficient to help understand the characteristics of Wei Yuan's political theory. The importance of Wei Yuan's political thoughts is embodied in its roles and novelty use in political realities. Wei Yuan's political doctrines,with "Huang-Lao Thought" included,is the central part of his political and ideological thought in late Qing Dynasty. Its features depend on Taoism together with Confucianism used outside the rigid system.

Abstract:Dong Zhongshu was affected by Qi Xue in his youth,and visited Hejian in his maturity where he responded Xian Wang with "the Five Elements".While entering the Center as a Doctor,he concentrated on learning and committed himself to national undertaking.In the Jianyuan period,he submitted "the Three Heaven-Man Polices".As a Taizhong Dafu,a senior Langguan attendant for a long time,Dong Zhongshu provided consultation,involved in the confidential affairs,constituted a series of educational polices for Han Dynasty,and constructed the system of the empire's ideology.His academic activities witnessed and pushed the evolvement of Confucianism from "the System of Heaven-Rites" of Hejian to "the System of Heaven-Man" of the Center.

Abstract:From antiquity to the Jin Dynasty, the thoughts of interaction between Heaven and humans experienced several changes, Shan Hai Jing or The Classics of Mountains and Seas was classifi ed as the witchcraft type in History of the Han Dynasty. Guo Pu's thoughts of interaction between Heaven and Humans could be divided into two modes:basic mode and special mode. The theoretical foundation was theories of qi, deity and Heaven or the combination of the three. There were some metaphysical thoughts his thoughts, showing that he was also a student of metaphysics. He chose the "little tradition" by abandoning the "great tradition" was due to his academic traditions and political ideals. He inherited the Confucian traditions from the Han dynasty. In spite of his evasive thoughts, he still played an active role in politics, using the theory of interaction between Heaven and humans to limit emperor s' power. He thought that he should do something benefi cial to the country and the people, so he urged Wen Qiao and Yu Liang to defend Wang Dun through divination, but ended up in losing his own life.

Abstract:The Confucian idea of "people as roots" (minben) does not contain the cream of democratic values,because it does not regard people as the ultimate end whose welfare should be fully respected by the ruler and officials,but mainly as the necessary means whose minimum interests should be concerned in order to secure their autocratic monarchy. As a result,this paradoxical idea has generated a lot of negative effect in real life,going directly against the modern democratic values. Only by regarding people as the ultimate end rather than as the usuful means in the creative transformation could the Confucian idea of "people as roots" play a positive role in the democratization of China.
