Abstract:This paper presents a novel direct elementary proof for Fermat's Last Theorem. We use algebra, modular math, and binomial series to develop inherent mathematical relationships hidden within Fermat's Last Theorem. With these derived relationships, we are able to develop general pattern applicable for all positive integers of n. Finally, we are able to confirm and complete the direct proof for Fermat's Diophantine equation for all n.

Abstract:The presented paper is a compendium or a kind of précis of relationships between the four classical theorems of mathematical analysis. More precisely, the first aim of this paper is to present the equivalence of the four classical theorems: the Hahn–Banach theorem, the Mazur–Orlicz theorem, the Markov–Kakutani fixed-point theorem and the von Neumann theorem on amenability of Abelian groups. The second purpose is to prove these equivalences in Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory with the axiom of choice replaced by the Boolean prime ideal theorem, from which we can also prove the Hahn–Banach theorem.

Abstract:Using subresultants, we modify a recent real-algebraic proof due to Eisermann of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra ([FTA]) to obtain the following quantitative information: in order to prove the [FTA] for polynomials of degree $d$, the Intermediate Value Theorem ([IVT]) is requested to hold for real polynomials of degree at most $d^2$. We also explain that the classical proof due to Laplace requires [IVT] for real polynomials of exponential degree. These quantitative results highlight the difference in nature of these two proofs.

Abstract:Reverse Mathematics (RM for short) is a program in the foundations of mathematics where the aim is to find the minimal axioms needed to prove a given theorem of ordinary mathematics. Generally, the minimal axioms are equivalent to the theorem at hand, assuming a weak logical system called the base theory. Moreover, many (most?) theorems are either provable in the base theory or equivalent to one of four logical systems, together called the Big Five. For instance, the Weierstrass approximation theorem, i.e. that a continuous function can be approximated uniformly by a sequence of polynomials, has been classified in RM as being equivalent to weak Koenig's lemma, the second Big Five system. In this paper, we study approximation theorems for discontinuous functions via Bernstein polynomials from the literature. We obtain (many) equivalences between the latter and weak Koenig's lemma. We also show that slight variations of these approximation theorems fall far outside of the Big Five but fit in the recently developed RM of new 'big' systems, namely the uncountability of R, the enumeration principle for countable sets, the pigeon-hole principle for measure, and the Baire category theorem. In conclusion, one equivalence in second-order RM, namely for the Weierstrass approximation theorem, gives rise to many equivalences in higher-order RM, and we hope the case study in this paper can serve as a kind of template.

Abstract:This paper is purely expositional. The statement of the Abel-Ruffini theorem on unsolvability of equations using radicals is simple and well-known. We sketch an elementary proof of this theorem. We do not use the terms 'field extension', 'Galois group' and even 'group'. However, our presentation is a good way to learn (or recall) starting idea of the Galois theory. Our exposition follows `Mathematical Omnibus' of S. Tabachnikov and D.B. Fuchs (in English, http://www.math.psu.edu/tabachni/Books/taba.pdf). The main difference is that we show how the proof could have been invented. The paper is accessible for students familiar with complex numbers, and could be an interesting easy reading for mature mathematicians. The material is presented as a sequence of problems, which is peculiar not only to Zen monasteries but also to advanced mathematical education; most problems are presented with hints or solutions.

Abstract:How to automatically generate short and easy-to-understand proofs for geometric theorems has long been an issue of concern in mathematics education. A novel automated geometric theorem proving method based on complex number identities is proposed in this paper, which acts as a bridge between geometry and algebra. According to the proposed method, the geometric relations in the given proposition are first transformed into a complex number expression, then the complex number identity is generated by the elimination method; finally, the closure property under all four operations of real numbers is employed to prove the proposition. A test on more than 300 geometric problems shows that the proposed method is highly effective, and the corresponding proofs are short, with obvious geometric meaning.

Abstract:This book can be seen either as a text on theorem proving that uses techniques from general algebra, or else as a text on general algebra illustrated and made concrete by practical exercises in theorem proving. The book considers several different logical systems, including first-order logic, Horn clause logic, equational logic, and first-order logic with equality. Similarly, several different proof paradigms are considered. However, we do emphasize equational logic, and for simplicity we use only the OBJ3 software system, though it is used in a rather flexible manner. We do not pursue the lofty goal of mechanizing proofs like those of which mathematicians are justly so proud; instead, we seek to take steps towards providing mechanical assistance for proofs that are useful for computer scientists in developing software and hardware. This more modest goal has the advantage of both being achievable and having practical benefits. The following topics are covered: many-sorted signature, algebra and homomorphism; term algebra and substitution; equation and satisfaction; conditional equations; equational deduction and its completeness; deduction for conditional equations; the theorem of constants; interpretation and equivalence of theories; term rewriting, termination, confluence and normal form; abstract rewrite systems; standard models, abstract data types, initiality, and induction; rewriting and deduction modulo equations; first-order logic, models, and proof planning; second-order algebra; order-sorted algebra and rewriting; modules; unification and completion; and hidden algebra. In parallel with these are a gradual introduction to OBJ3, applications to group theory, various abstract data types (such as number systems, lists, and stacks), propositional calculus, hardware verification, the {\lambda}-calculus, correctness of functional programs, and other topics.

Abstract:Motivated by a recent result of Prasad, we consider three stronger notions of arithmetic equivalence: local integral equivalence, integral equivalence, and solvable equivalence. In addition to having the same Dedekind zeta function (the usual notion of arithmetic equivalence), number fields that are equivalent in any of these stronger senses must have the same class number, and solvable equivalence forces an isomorphism of adele rings. Until recently the only nontrivial example of integral and solvable equivalence arose from a group-theoretic construction of Scott that was exploited by Prasad. Here we provide infinitely many distinct examples of solvable equivalence, including a family that contains Scott's construction as well as an explicit example of degree 96. We also construct examples that address questions of Scott, and of Guralnick and Weiss, and shed some light on a question of Prasad.

Abstract:A cyclic proof system gives us another way of representing inductive definitions and efficient proof search. In 2011 Brotherston and Simpson conjectured the equivalence between the provability of the classical cyclic proof system and that of the classical system of Martin-Lof's inductive definitions. This paper studies the conjecture for intuitionistic logic. This paper first points out that the countermodel of FOSSACS 2017 paper by the same authors shows the conjecture for intuitionistic logic is false in general. Then this paper shows the conjecture for intuitionistic logic is true under arithmetic, namely, the provability of the intuitionistic cyclic proof system is the same as that of the intuitionistic system of Martin-Lof's inductive definitions when both systems contain Heyting arithmetic HA. For this purpose, this paper also shows that HA proves Podelski-Rybalchenko theorem for induction and Kleene-Brouwer theorem for induction. These results immediately give another proof to the conjecture under arithmetic for classical logic shown in LICS 2017 paper by the same authors.
