Abstract:1H, 19F and 15N NMR spectroscopy has been carried out on the soluble hydrogen bonded complex (CH3CH2)4N+F− (uracil). The studies suggest that deprotonation of the uracil does not occur and that in a medium dielectric constant solvent, hydrogen bonding occurs at the N(1)H site. Spectroscopic monitoring of the controlled thermal decomposition of the complex shows that complex breakdown occurs via the uracil anion, HF−2 and neutral uracil.

Abstract:The DNA nucleobase cytosine forms a strong easily polarizable hydrogen bond with F−. Infrared and NMR characteristics for the hydrogen bond are reported. The hydrogen bond appears to be able to exist in both hydrated and anhydrous forms.

Abstract:Ab initio LCAO-MO-SCF calculations have been performed on the polyfluoride ions HnFn+1–, n= 1–4, and the hydrogen fluoride polymers (HF)m, m= 1–4, to determine their molecular configurations and the hydrogen-bond energies of the polyfluorides. All the polyfluorides are strongly hydrogen bonded and have structures in which a central fluorine acts as the acceptor to one to four HF molecules. The hydrogen fluoride polymers prefer open-chain arrangements. A safe and simple method of preparing K[HF2] in high yield is given.

Abstract:Short interfluorine contacts (F-F) are ubiquitous in crystal structures. This article presents a theoretical study of five dimeric complexes formed between fluorine-containing molecules and hydrogen fluorine at the MP2 computational levels. The results derived from ab initio calculations show that in all cases, the intermolecular distances are less than the sum of van der Waals radii. Difluorine bond energies, computed at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory, span over a range from -0.71 to -3.77 kJ/mol, thus indicating that interfluorine interactions are relatively very weak but non-negligible. The electrostatic force contributes dominantly to the stability of the systems under investigation, and as such the dispersion interaction makes energetic contributions to binding. As an NBO analysis suggested, the charge-transfer force plays a minor role in the formation of the complexes. Finally, to gain more insights into the nature of interfluorine interactions, topological analysis of the electron density distribution and properties of bond critical points are determined by means of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules. Abstract:Infrared spectra of tetrabutylammonium fluoride complexes of both 4-cyanophenol and methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate but not 3-cyanophenol reveal the presence of two distinct types of hydrogen bond corresponding to charge localized and partially charge delocalized forms. The latter only occur in polar aprotic protophilic solvents at low temperatures. The activation energies for the interconversion of the two forms reflect the relative abilities of the two groups to delocalize charge through resonance. The chemical shifts of the aromatic protons of the complexes are also medium dependent although the precise nature of this medium dependence is less easily understood.

Abstract:Fluorine-containing medicinal compounds frequently allow modulation of physical-chemical properties. Here, we address the effect of fluorine, near the ethylamino side chain, on conformational flexibility and noncovalent interactions (NCIs) of the selected jet-cooled monohydrated cluster of 2-(2-fluoro-phenyl)-ethylamine (2-FPEA) by mass-selected resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization and ionization-loss stimulated Raman spectroscopies. Our results show that Raman spectral signatures of the 2-FPEA-H2O cluster match the scaled harmonic vibrational Raman frequencies, resulting from density functional theory calculations of the most stable 2-FPEA gauche conformer hydrogen-bonded (HB) to water, confirming the three-dimensional cluster structure. This predicted electronic structure, together with NCI analysis, allows visualization and assessment of the attractive and repulsive interactions. The comparison of the NCIs and revealed red (O-H and N-H stretches) and blue shifts (C-H stretches and CH2 out-of-plane bends) of the cluster to other class members confirm O-H···N, N-H···π, C-H···O, and C-H···F HB formation and their contribution to structure stabilization, uncovering the potential of the approach.

Abstract:Heavy alkali-metal fluorides are soluble in low-molecular-weight liquid aliphatic diols. Low-field shifts in the proton magnetic resonances of selected fluoride–diol solutions may be interpreted as being due largely to strong hydrogen bonding between the fluoride anion and the diol hydroxyls, although cation effects are also evident. Variable-temperature 1H n.m.r. studies on KF–1,2-ethanediol, CH3CN–1,2-ethanediol, and neat 1,2-ethanediol have been carried out and values of –(50 ± 10) kJ mol–1 for ΔH⊖ and –(130 ± 25) J K–1 mol–1 for ΔS⊖ have been determined for the (F ⋯ HO)– hydrogen bond.

Abstract:This study explores the effects of the −CF 3 group on non-covalent interactions through a comprehensive rotational investigation of the 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid–water complex. Employing Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy complemented by quantum chemical calculations, two isomers, i.e., s-cis and s-trans structures, have been observed in the pulsed jet. Based on relative intensity measurements, the s-cis to the s-trans population ratio was experimentally estimated to be ∼ 1:1.2. Subsequently, a comparison of the non-covalent interactions was carried out between the three similar complexes, acrylic acid–water, methacrylic acid–water, and 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid–water, offering quantitative insights into fluorination affecting the strength of the formed hydrogen bonds important, e.g., in molecular recognition.

Abstract:The presence of hydrogen bonding in chloroform and polyacrylate mixtures was demonstrated by observation of 1H- and 13C-NMR chemical shifts. Comparison of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shift in polymer solutions with their low molecular mass analogues showed the effect of steric hindrance on hydrogen bonding. This initial investigation is helpful for understanding the intermolecular interaction in relatively weak hydrogen bonding polymer solutions.

Abstract:[FeII(NCCH3)(NTB)](OTf)2 (NTB = tris(2-benzimidazoylmethyl)amine, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) was reacted with difluoro(phenyl)-λ3-iodane (PhIF2) in the presence of a variety of saturated hydrocarbons, resulting in the oxidative fluorination of the hydrocarbons in moderate-to-good yields. Kinetic and product analysis point towards a hydrogen atom transfer oxidation prior to fluorine radical rebound to form the fluorinated product. The combined evidence supports the formation of a formally FeIV(F)2 oxidant that performs hydrogen atom transfer followed by the formation of a dimeric μ-F-(FeIII)2 product that is a plausible fluorine atom transfer rebound reagent. This approach mimics the heme paradigm for hydrocarbon hydroxylation, opening up avenues for oxidative hydrocarbon halogenation.

Probing The Electronic Structures Of Low Oxidation-State Uranium Fluoride Molecules Ufx- (X=2-4)

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of gaseous UFx- (x = 2-4) anions, which are investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy and relativistic quantum chemistry. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra are obtained for all three species and the electron affinities of UFx (x = 2-4) are measured to be 1.16(3), 1.09(3), and 1.58(3) eV, respectively. Significant multi-electron transitions are observed in the photoelectron spectra of U(5f(3)7s(2)) F-2(-), as a result of strong electron correlation effects of the two 7s electrons. The U-F symmetric stretching vibrational modes are resolved for the ground states of all UFx (x = 2-4) neutrals. Theoretical calculations are performed to qualitatively understand the photoelectron spectra. The entire UFx- and UFx (x = 1-6) series are considered theoretically to examine the trends of U-F bonding and the electron affinities as a function of fluorine coordination. The increased U-F bond lengths and decreased bond orders from UF2- to UF4- indicate that the U-F bonding becomes weaker as the oxidation state of U increases from I to III.
