Abstract:A novel deep-cavity calixarene, p-[1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]calix[8]arene 1 was synthesized and its complexation with aromatic compounds was examined, Reaction of p-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]phenol 2 with paraformaldehyde under various conditions only resulted in p-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]calix[8]arene 3, and no corresponding calix[4]arene and calix[6]arene were detected, Removal of the methyl in the ether groups of 3 afforded 1 in 80% yield, Solubilization, fluorescence and photochemical probe studies demonstrated that 1 forms inclusion complexes with a variety of aromatic compounds in polar non-aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Cleft of center: The self fine-tuning π-deficient cleft of 1,3-dichloro-substituted tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine forms noncovalent π–halide and π–lone-pair-electron interactions with halides Cl− and Br−, and water, giving rise to ternary complexes in the solid state (see structure, N blue). In solution, the host molecule, formed by a different mechanism, complexes with fluoride, giving Ka (1:1) of over 4000 M−1. Abstract:A hydrogen bonded calix[5]arene cavitand has been designed and prepared, which has a bowl-like cavity of about 0.85 nm width. The binding affinity of the container for ferrocene and its eight derivatives in chloroform is modest. In binary perfluoro-1-iodohexane and chloroform (9:1 v/v), binding constants for the complexes of the seven fluorine-free guests increase by 14.0-144.1 times. In contrast, binding constants for the complexes of two guests that bear a perfluoroheptyl group do not exhibit similar increase. Similar enhancement of binding affinity can also be observed in binary solvents of perfluoro-1-iodobutane or perfluoro-1-iodooctane and chloroform. The results support that perfluoro-1-iodoalkanes molecules in the cavity of the calix[5]arene container function as high-energy ones and their release into the bulk phase is the major driving force for enhanced inclusion of the calix[5]arene container for the fluorine-free guests.

Abstract:The complex stability constants (K-S) and thermodynamic parameters (Delta H degrees and T Delta S degrees) for 1: 1 intermolecular complexation of three water-soluble calixarenes, that is, p-sulfonato calix[4]arene (C4AS), p-sulfonato thiacalix[4]arene (TCAS), and p-sulfonato calix[5]arene (C5AS), with dipyridines (4-DPD and 2-DPD) and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) have been determined by means of titration microcalorimetry in an acidic buffer solution (pH = 2.0) at 298.15 K, and their binding modes have been investigated by H-1 NMR and 2D ROESY NMR spectroscopy. The results obtained indicate that 4-DPD, 2-DPD, and Phen are included in the cavity of C5AS with the different patterns, this is, accumbent for 4-DPD, acclivitous for 2-DPD and Phen, while Phen is included upright in the cavity of C4AS. The Ks values decrease with increasing cavity size of host molecules but enhance with extending conjugation degree of guest molecules, and thus C4AS exhibits an exceptionally high Phen/4-DPD selectivity of 22.5. Thermodynamically, the complexation of DPDs/Phen with the water-soluble calixarenes is obviously enthalpy-driven, but the molecular selectivity is mainly governed by the entropy term.

Abstract:This paper reports the properties of the novel tetra-p-nitro-tetra-O-alkyl-calix[4]arenes (alkyl = n-C4H9, 1; n-C8H17 2; n-C12H25, 3; n-C16H33, 4), X-ray crystallographic analysis and H-1 NMR revealed that they exist as pinched cone conformation in crystal or cone conformation in solution. EFISH experiments at 1064 nm in CHCl3 indicated that tetra-p-nitro-tetra-O-butyl-calix[4]arene (1) has higher hyperpolarizability beta (z) values than the corresponding reference compound p-nitro-phenyl butyl ether, without red shift of the charge transfer band. Compounds 2, 3 and 4 with longer alkyl chains can form monolayer at the air/water.

Abstract:Single crystals of two calix[4]arene derivatives, that is, 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl- 25,27-bis[2-[N-(3-methoxy-4-methoxy-benzylidene)-amino]ethoxy]-26,28- dihydroxy calix[4]arene (1) and 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,27-bis[2-[3- pyridine carbonyl-amino]ethoxy]-26,28-dihydroxy calix[4]arene (2), were prepared and their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray crystallographic study. As compared with calix[4]arene derivative 1 possessing CN functional group, compound 2 bearing the NH group could form not only intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the hydrogen atom in NH group and the oxygen atom in CO of an adjacent calix[4]arene molecule, but also intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the N—H⋯OC moieties in solid state, giving a rare linear molecular aggregation.

Abstract:The structure of fluoboric acid selectively embedded within the hydrophobic cavity of the tetra(p-tert-butyl)thiacalix[4]arene was determined by X-ray crystallography. Crystal data: C40H49O4S4BF4, Mr=808.88, tetragonal, space group P4/nmm, a=1.5887(2) nm, b=1.5887(2) nm, c=0.8428(0) nm, V=2.127(2) nm3, Z=2, Dc=1.263 g·cm−3, R1=0.0405, wR[I>2σ(I)]=0.1218. 19F NMR confirmed the existence of fluoboric acid with a signal at δ −151.4. The noncovalent interactions in the molecular structure were characterized by Bader's theory of “atoms in molecules” (AIM). The results reveal that besides the C–H–F hydrogen bonding and cation-anion electrostatic interaction present in the fluoboric acid inclusion complex, the Fδ−-Cδ+ electrostatic interaction also exists for stabilizing the fluoboric acid embedded within the hydrophobic cavity of tetra(p-tert-butyl)thiacalix[4]arene.

Abstract:Infrared spectra of tetrabutylammonium fluoride complexes of both 4-cyanophenol and methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate but not 3-cyanophenol reveal the presence of two distinct types of hydrogen bond corresponding to charge localized and partially charge delocalized forms. The latter only occur in polar aprotic protophilic solvents at low temperatures. The activation energies for the interconversion of the two forms reflect the relative abilities of the two groups to delocalize charge through resonance. The chemical shifts of the aromatic protons of the complexes are also medium dependent although the precise nature of this medium dependence is less easily understood.

Abstract:A novel calix[4]arene based chemosensor L which contains coumarin and thiourea group has been synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, probe L exhibits both fluorescent and colorimetric response to fluoride anion with high selectivity and sensitivity. The addition of F- to a solution of probe L resulted in obvious naked-eye color change from colorless to orange under daylight and prominent fluorescence quenching. Further studies showed that the recognition process was less affected by other anions. The binding property of L with F- was studied by a combination of combination of various spectroscopic techniques, such as absorption spectra, fluorescence titration, Job's plot and 1H NMR titration. We are anticipating that this architecture with functional group attached to upper rim of calix[4]arene platform may provide a new approach for the development of F- chemosensor.

Abstract:Binary complex formation between silicon tetrachloride (SiCl 4 ) and formic acid (FA) has been observed in an argon matrix environment. Such complex formation manifests as spectral shifts in signature vibrations of the latter, namely the ν C=O and ν C-O vibrations. Quantum chemical calculations reveal that the most stable conformers of the complex involve predominantly the tetrel bond, which has been defined in existing literature as a variant of the "σ-hole" interactions. Here, regions of positive electrostatic potential on the tetrahedral face of SiCl 4 act as electrophilic centers (σ-hole) to which the nucleophilic carbonyl group of FA is able to bind. Atoms-in-Molecules analysis predicts a bond critical point along the non-covalent contact between the tetrel atom Si and the carbonyl oxygen on FA, corroborating the presence of the tetrel bond. The hyperconjugative interaction parameters at the binding interface obtained from Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis are also consistent with such observations. Although apparently similar to SiCl 4 , there are noticeable differences in the binding preferences of the lower homologue carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ). The latter's binary complexes with the same FA acceptor molecule have been previously shown to involve halogen bonded, rather than tetrel bonded interactions (Banerjee and Bhattacharya, Spectrochim. Acta Mol. and Biomolecular Spectrosc, 2021, 250,119355). Such variations in the nature of non-covalent interactions of these tetrahalogens are attributed to differences in the distribution of electronic charge density surrounding the central tetrel atom, as obtained from mappings of their electrostatic potential surfaces. Our combined experimental and theoretical findings therefore provide direct evidence of the growing propensity of tetrel atoms to engage in tetrel bonding as we move lower down Group 14, and re-assert the reluctance of the smaller and more electronegative carbon atom to serve as a tetrel bond participant.

Abstract:The upper-rim 1,3-alternate tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine azacrowns were constructed effectively by macrocyclic condensation reaction of diamines with dichlorinated tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine intermediates that were synthesized from the stepwise fragment coupling reactions of 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid esters with cyanuric chlorides. Because of the formation of conjugation of amino groups with triazine rings, tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine azacrowns existed in a mixture of syn- and anti-isomeric forms. Both fluorescence titration and 1H NMR spectroscopic study showed that tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine azacrowns interacted with fluoride anion, leading to cavity changes of the host molecules.

Abstract:The excellent solubility of quaternary ammonium fluorides makes them attractive alternatives to traditional fluoride ion sources such as potassium fluoride. Unfortunately the high hydroscopicity and low thermal stability of most of these reagents severely restricts their synthetic value. In the light of the work of Christe on the preparation of anhydrous tetramethylammonium fluoride (TMAF) we have carried out research into the use of this reagent.

Abstract:A new calix[4]arene derivative, 11,23-bis(hydroxyiminomethyl)-25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-di-n-propoxycalix[4]-arene (B), was synthesized and a compound, with composition of B center dot 2CH(3)CN, was fully characterized. H-1 NMR showed that B in the B center dot 2CH(3)CN adopts a cone conformation. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the conformation found in solution. In the crystal network, self-inclusion phenomenon is present in a dimeric unit of B center dot 2CH(3)CN via embedding each other. The noncovalent interaction energies were calculated at B3LYP/6-311G(d) level and corrected by basis set superposition error (BSSE). In half a dimeric unit, one CH3CN is stabilized via hydrogen bonding formed between nitrogen atom of the acetonitrile and one hydroxyimino group, with bonding energy of -5.02 kJ center dot mol(-1), and the other one stabilized by hydrogen bonding formed between nitrogen atom of the acetonitrile and the other hydroxyimino group, with bonding energy of -14.23 kJ center dot mol(-1), and by inclusion to hydrophobic cavity of the other half of the dimeric unit via C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interaction, with bonding energy of -3.77 kJ center dot mol(-1), doubling of which is a driving force for embedding two B center dot 2CH(3)CN together.

Abstract:The complexing ability of water-soluble calix[4]arene for l-tryptophan (l-try) was investigated by a variety of techniques. The spectrofluorometry titrations were performed at different temperatures to determine stability constants, as well as to evaluate the thermodynamic parameters of the obtained complex. The effect of pH on the complexation process was quantitatively assessed. Moreover, to obtain information about the binding mechanism of the interaction, 1H NMR studies were carried out. Molecular modeling showed that water-soluble calix[4]arene accommodated part of l-amino acid in its cavity meanwhile the aliphatic chain of l-tryptophan stuck out of the cavity. Based on the experiment data, the association process of complexes was established. The water-soluble calix[4]arene was found to be able to adjust its conformation to fit the size of aromatic l-tryptophan, and the benzene ring of amino acid penetrated into the hydrophobic cavity of calix[4]arene.
