Abstract:Separator has great influences on performance and safety of batteries, for both the separator properties and separator-electrode interfaces affect ionic diffusion. Microporous polyolefin membranes (MPM) with many excellent properties are widely used as separators in commercial lithium batteries. However, MPM separators still suffer from serious thermal shrinkage and poor wettability, which lead to safety hazard and poor electrochemical performance. Furthermore, MPM separators cannot meet the higher requirements of the next-generation high-energy-density batteries. With fast progress of battery studies, researchers gradually recognize that separator is a favorable platform to address the key challenges of batteries. In this review, we provide an overview of state-of-the-art research about function-directed design of MPM separators. First, we briefly show the challenges of conventional MPM separators. Then, we summarize preparation methods of MPM-based functional separators. Subsequently, we mainly highlight the functions of MPM separators including improve wettability to liquid electrolytes, enhance thermal stability, inhibit intermediate products shuttle and stabilize metal anodes, etc. Finally, we make a summary and give a future outlook of MPM-based functional separators. Insights from this review show that MPM-based functional separators can significantly enhance electrochemical performance and safety of batteries. Also, rational design of advanced separators will play a more and more important role in future development of the next-generation high-energy-density batteries.
