Abstract:This study reviews the recent developments and the characteristics of polymeric separators used for lithium ion batteries. According to the structure and composition of the separators, they are broadly divided into four types: (1) polyolefin microporous separators, (2) heterochain polymer microporous separators, (3) polymer electrolytes and (4) non-woven separators. In particular, polymer electrolytes were defined as one category of separators for convenient description in this review; these feature intermediates between the two electrodes and possess transport properties comparable with the separator in liquid LIBs. For each category, the structure, characteristics, modification, and performance of separators are described. Finally, guidelines for further improvements in this research are outlined.
Polypropylene Separator Coated with a Thin Layer of Poly(lithium Acrylate‐co‐butyl Acrylate) for High‐performance Lithium‐ion Batteries

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this paper, poly(lithium acrylate‐co‐butyl acrylate) [P(AALi‐co‐BA)] was synthesized, and a P(AALi‐co‐BA)‐coated polypropylene (PP) separator was prepared by a simple dip‐coating process. In contrast to the conventional thick, dense gel polymer coating layer, a thin P(AALi‐co‐BA) layer was formed on the PP separator, which had less influence on the pore structure of the original PP separator and was beneficial for the migration of lithium ions through the separator. Furthermore, the AALi units in the copolymer could improve the wettability of the separator, while the BA units provided the separator with strong adhesion to the electrodes. As expected, the modified separators showed good wettability, high ionic conductivity, and excellent interface stability. In addition, the cycle stability and rate performance were also improved significantly. This facile, affordable, and effective method has great application potential for the modification of polyolefin‐based separators. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Improving the Properties of HDPE Based Separators for Lithium Ion Batteries by Blending Block with Copolymer PE- B -PEG

Abstract:To improve the performances of HDPE-based separators, polyether chains were incorporated into HDPE membranes by blending with poly(ethylene-block-ethylene glycol) (PE-b-PEG) via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) process. By measuring the composition, morphology, crystallinity, ion conductivity, etc, the influence of PE-b-PEG on structures and properties of the blend separator were investigated. It was found that the incorporated PEG chains yielded higher surface energy for HDPE separator and improved affinity to liquid electrolyte. Thus, the stability of liquid electrolyte trapped in separator was increased while the interfacial resistance between separator and electrode was reduced effectively. The ionic conductivity of liquid electrolyte soaked separator could reach 1.28 × 10−3 S·cm−1 at 25°C, and the electrochemical stability window was up to 4.5 V (versus Li+/Li). These results revealed that blending PE-b-PEG into porous HDPE membranes could efficiently improve the performances of PE separators for lithium batteries.
Copolymer-assisted Polypropylene Separator for Fast and Uniform Lithium Ion Transport in Lithium-ion Batteries

Abstract:In lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), separators play a vital role in lithium-ion (Li+) transport, and thus affect rate performance, battery life, and safety. Here, a new kind of multifunctional copolymer poly(acrylonitrile- co -lithium acrylate- co -butyl acrylate) (PAAB-Li) is synthesized through soap-free emulsion polymerization, and is used to form homogeneous-covered separator based on PP matrix by a simple dip-annealing process. Compared to the bare PP separator, the modified separators with PAAB-Li enable higher ionic conductivity, higher lithium ion transference number (increased from 0.360 to 0.525), and lower interface impedance (reduced from 155 Ω to 34 Ω). It has been indicated that PAAB-Li functional layer significantly promotes the fast transport of Li + and improves the compatibility of the separator/electrolyte-electrode interface. The LiCoO 2 /graphite cells with the PAAB-Li-assisted separator demonstrate excellent cycle stability and rate performance. In addition, the Li symmetric cells with the modified separator stably cycle over 800 h, indicating the functional layer effectively suppresses the lithium dendrite growth. This facile strategy can be easily applied to LIBs requiring high safety and even be scalable to Li metal batteries. Moreover, the possible mechanism of the PAAB-Li functional layer promoting fast and uniform Li+ transport is discussed in this paper.
High-performance polyethylene separators for lithium-ion batteries modified by phenolic resin

Abstract:In lithium-ion batteries, separator serves to isolate the positive and negative electrodes, as well as provide a free shuttle for Li-ion transport inside the battery. Commercial polyolefin separator has relatively higher thermal shrinkage and lower electrolyte wettability, which limits the application of batteries in extreme conditions. In this work, we prepared phenolic resin (AF) modified polyethylene (PE) composite separators by the process of immersion in situ reaction. The obtained composite separator has lower thermal shrinkage and higher electrolyte wettability than pure PE separator. The shrinkage of our prepared separator is only 6% when stored at 145 °C for 30 min, greatly smaller than the pure PE separator (more than 77%). Moreover, the ion conductivity of composite separator increases from 0.206 mS cm−1 for the pure one to 0.604 mS cm−1. Apart from this, the Li/electrolyte-soaked separator/LiFePO4 battery exhibits a higher coulombic efficiency (96.7%) and discharge capacity retention rate (86.0%) after 450 cycles than the pure one (67.4% and 72.7%, respectively). Our results indicate that the AF coating plays a vital part in improving the thermal stability and electrochemical property of polyolefin separators.

Abstract:ABSTRACTTo assure the safety of the lithium‐ion battery, the separator is required to have good thermal stability. Because the single‐layer polyethylene (PE) separator can only tolerate a temperature of 130°C, it is seldom employed currently by lithium‐ion battery manufacturers although its cost is low. In this article, we modified PE separator chain structure through solid‐state ultraviolet (UV) irradiation method to achieve a separator with composite structure of ∼40% crystallized PE and ∼70% gel content. Approximately 40% crystallized PE chains fulfill the task of auto‐shutdown at 130°C through melting and filling the pores. At the same time, the PE separator can maintain integrity till 220°C because of its highly cross‐linked chain structure. Besides, the modified PE separator is hydrophilic with a water contact angle of 33° after UV treatment and is able to absorb more electrolyte. However, the tensile strength and elongation at the break decreased because the cross‐linking network increased the rigidity. Nevertheless, these values still meet the requirements as the separator for lithium‐ion battery. Considering the low cost and easy preparation, current cross‐linked PE separator has potential to be used in lithium‐ion batteries for various applications, including electric vehicles and energy storage purpose. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Li-ion and Li-S batteries find enormous applications in different fields, such as electric vehicles and portable electronics. A separator is an indispensable part of the battery design, which functions as a physical barrier for the electrode as well as an electrolyte reservoir for ionic transport. The properties of the separators directly influence the performance of the batteries. Traditional polyolefin separators showed low thermal stability, poor wettability toward the electrolyte, and inadequate barrier properties to polysulfides. To improve the performance and durability of Li-ion and Li-S batteries, development of advanced separators is required. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the fabrication and application of novel separators, including the functionalized polyolefin separator, polymeric separator, and ceramic separator, for Li-ion and Li-S batteries. The characteristics, advantages, and limitations of these separators are discussed. A brief outlook for the future directions of the research in the separators is also provided.
Application of Polyethylene Separator Modified by Methyl Acrylic Polymer in Lithium Ion Battery

Abstract:Cyclic carbonate group was introduced into the side-chain of polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) to prepare poly (2-oxo-1, 3-dioxolan-4-yl) methyl methacrylate (PDOMMA), which was then coated on polyethylene separator of lithium ion battery. The thermal stability of PDOMMA and the effect of modification on wettability and electrolyte uptake ability of separator were studied by thermogravimetry(TG), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), static contact angle test and electrolyte uptake rate test. Moreover, the effect of the modified separator on the performance of lithium ion battery was studied by galvanostatic charge and discharge test, alternating current(AC) impedance test, rate capability test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that compared to the unmodified separator, the modified separator has an improved wettability with the electrolyte(the complete wetting is reached by 20 s), a higher uptake rate of electrolyte (440%), and better cycle performance of the related battery (discharge specific capacity increased by 12.3%).
Polyphenols Assisted Silica Coating on Polypropylene Separators with Improved Wettability and Heat‐resistance for Lithium‐ion Batteries

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe separator, as one of the essential components for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), has garnered considerable attention because of its significant role in battery performance. Here, an in‐situ coating method to promote the wettability and thermal‐stability of polypropylene (PP) separators was reported. The separator was first dip‐coated with phenolic compound based on biologically inspired surface modification. Then silica layers were in‐situ formed on the separator via a sol–gel process of silicate solution, so that an inorganic–organic hybrid layer was coated on PP separators without the need of any polymer binders. Besides, this method hardly increases the film thickness or sacrifices microporous structure of the pristine separator. Due to the introduction of hybrid layers, the resulted separators showed excellent dimensional thermostability, as the thermal shrinkage was only 20% at 150 °C while that of the bare separator was about 80%. Meanwhile, electrochemical performances of cells with the modified separator were obviously improved, especially the rate performance. At the charge/discharge current density of 5 C, cells with PP separators nearly lost all the capacity, but the modified separator still held 45.7% of the discharge capacity at 0.2 C. Tannic Acid/polyethyleneimine-Decorated Polypropylene Separators for Li-Ion Batteries and the Role of the Interfaces Between Separator and Electrolyte

Abstract:Surface chemistry of the separator plays an important role in the performance of the lithium ion battery separator, which not only influence the wettability with the electrolyte, but also the lithium ion migration through the separator. Here we developed a simple method to modify the polypropylene separator with tannic acid (TA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI). A thin and uniform TA/PEI layer was formed onto the surfaces of the separator through a simple assembly process without destroyed the microstructure. The modified PP separator showed excellent wettability, high ambient ionic conductivity (0.95mS cm(-1)) and lithium-ion transference number (0.44), indicating that the TA/PEI layer played a role in the lithium ions migration. The possible mechanism of the surface promoting lithium ion migration was discussed in this paper. The battery performances of the modified separator were also conducted. As a result, cells with the TA/PEI-coated PP separator displayed superior cycle stability and rate capability. (c) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Functionalized separator is more competitive than commercial polyolefin separator for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In this work, we design the separator modified by a composite coating layer, which is composed of Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and lithium bis(triuoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) (LLZTO-PEO/PVDF-HFP/LiTFSI, LLZTO-PPL). The LLZTO-PPL composite coating layer gives an impressive effect on dendrite inhibition of lithium metal. In comparison with commercial polyolefin separator, smaller overpotential value and better Coulombic efficiency are observed for the Li/LLZTO-PPL/Li symmetric cells and the Li/LLZTO-PPL/Cu asymmetric cells at various current densities of 0.2, 0.5, and 1 mA cm–2. Moreover, the LLZTO-PPL composite coating layer modified separator exhibits better high-rate capability and cycle performance for these cells assembled with different kinds of cathode materials (LiFePO4, LiCoO2, and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) and their counterpart of a lithium metal anode. The functionalized composite coating layer modified separator may be a more attractive candidate material for commercial lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Polyolefin separators are the most common separators used in rechargeable lithium (Li)‐ion batteries. However, the influence of different polyolefin separators on the performance of Li metal batteries (LMBs) has not been well studied. By performing particle injection simulations on the reconstructed three‐dimensional pores of different polyolefin separators, it was revealed that the pore structure of the separator had a significant impact on the ion flux distribution, the Li deposition behavior and consequently, the cycle life of LMBs. It was also discovered that the homogeneity factor of Li ion toward Li metal electrode was positively correlated to the longevity and reproducibility of LMBs. This work not only emphasizes the importance of pore structure of polyolefin separators, but also provides an economic and effective method to screen favorable separators for LMBs. Preparation and performance of polypropylene separator modified by SiO2/PVA layer for lithium batteries

Abstract:An aqueous silica (SiO2) dispersion was prepared by using silica as ceramic particles, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a binder and deionized water as a dispersion medium. A SiO2 ceramic layer was applied to the surface of the polypropylene (PP) separator by dip coating. The separators before and after modification were characterized by XRD, SEM, DTA, lyophilic performance test, contact angle test and heat resistance test. The separators were assembled into lithium-ion batteries for electrochemical performance test. The results show that after the successful introduction of SiO2/PVA coating on the surface of PP separator, the lyophilic and heat resistance and electrochemical performance of PP separator have been improved significantly. The battery rate performance and cycle performance are significantly improved. Especially the capacity retention rate of the original separator was only 75.79% at 100 charge-discharge times, and that of the modified separator was as high as 87.18%.
Effect of Polyphenol-Polyamine Treated Polyethylene Separator on the Ionic Conduction and Interface Properties for Lithium-Metal Anode Batteries

Abstract:Lithium metal is a promising anode candidate for the next-generation higher energy density batteries. In this work, a detailed study is carried out to clearly explore the influence of separator wettability on ionic conduction and interface properties for lithium-metal anode batteries. Firstly, polyphenol and polyamine are facilely assembled on the surface of polyethylene (PE) separator with the assistant of periodate. Wettability and electrolyte uptake of the polyphenol-polyamine treated PE separator improves significantly, which resulted in the increase of ionic conductivity and lithium-ion transference number (from 0.37 to 0.49). Subsequently, galvanostatic measurements and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) are performed on Li symmetric cells to investigate the effect of separator wettability on interface properties. It is found that the modified PE separator favors the electrochemical process by providing lower interfacial resistance, better interface compatibility, and more uniform deposition of Li+, which correspondingly mitigate the formation of Li dendrites. Finally, lithium-metal anode cells (LiCoO2 (LCO)/Li) assembled with different separators are tested, and superior battery performance is displayed in case of the polyphenol-polyamine treated substrate. These results are expected to be instructive for the design of more durable Li electrodes.

Abstract:Abstract The separator technology is a major area of interest in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for high-energy and high-power applications such as portable electronics, electric vehicles and energy storage for power grids. Separators play an essential part that physically prevents direct contact between positive and negative electrodes while acting as an electrolyte reservoir to transport lithium ions. The characteristics of different separators would directly affect the performance under cell abuse; hence separators are crucial for battery safety. This paper introduces the characteristics of separators, means to improve traditional commercial polymeric separators and novel materials for separators. Other novel high-performance separators are also briefly discussed in this paper. Insights from this paper illustrate that various strategies could enhance the performance of separators, and better performance and safety can be achieved in separators in high-energy lithium-ion batteries.
Characterization and Preparation of Modified Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride) Separator for Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:Poly(AN-co-PEGDMA) was synthesized using ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate and acrylonitrile as starting materials and separators with different content of poly(AN-co-PEGDMA) were prepared by blending with poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF).Properties of the separators were characterized through differential scanning calorimetry quantity analysis(DSC),X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis curves and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Results show that diffraction peak intensity decreases,glass transition temperature increases and degree of crystallinity decreases with increasing the content of poly(AN-co-PEGDMA).The fact that the gaps in the separator enlarge as the content of poly(AN-co-PEGDMA) increasing help the separators absorbing the electrolytic solution effectively.When the mass fraction of poly(AN-co-PEGDMA) is 30%,both absorption rate and conductivity of the PVDF/poly(AN-co-PEGDMA) separator are better.The blend separators process higher ionic conductivity(2.08×10–3 S/ cm,20℃) and better electrolyte maintenance.The electrochemical stability is in the range of 0～4.7 V(vs Li+/Li),the discharge capacity is in the range of 1.433～1.151 mAh.The measurements of the charge-discharge efficiency and discharge capacity of PVDF/ poly(AN-co-PEGDMA)separator reveal that the blend separator can be used in cells.
Binder‐Free TiO 2 ‐coated Polypropylene Separators for Advanced Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Modification with inorganic nanoparticles is a common method to enhance the thermal stability, electrolyte wettability, and overall functionality of commercial separators. However, the binders frequently used reduce the specific capacity of batteries and tend to swell in the electrolyte. Herein, a novel type of inorganic thin layer–coated separator that is easy to prepare and does not require a binder is designed. After treating by UV/O3, a thin titania layer is uniformly deposited on the surface of a commercial polypropylene (PP) separator by a facile sol–gel coating method. The thin TiO2 layer considerably improves the thermal stability of the separator, and there is no obvious shrinkage when the separator is heated at 170 °C for 30 min. At the same time, the electrolyte wettability is greatly improved after modification, which increases the Li+ migration rate. A LiFePO4/Li battery with the PP@TiO2 separator shows superior rate capability and cycle performance at high currents; particularly, it demonstrates a high capacity of 92.6 mAh g−1 at 15 C. The modified separator simultaneously improves the safety and electrochemical performance of the batteries, which will help to achieve the goal of preparing high‐safety, high‐capacity lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs).

Abstract:In an effort to reduce thermal shrinkage and improve electrochemical performance of porous polypropylene (PP) separators for lithium-ion batteries, a new composite separator is developed by introducing ceramic coated layers on both sides of PP separator through a dip-coating process. The coated layers are comprised of heat-resistant and hydrophilic silica nanoparticles and polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) binders. Highly porous honeycomb structure is formed and the thickness of the layer is only about 700 nm. In comparison to the pristine PP separator, the composite separator shows significant reduction in thermal shrinkage and improvement in liquid electrolyte uptake and ionic conduction, which play an important role in improving cell performance such as discharge capacity, C-rate capability, cycle performance and coulombic efficiency.

Abstract:To effectively improve the affinity of polyethylene (PE) separators with liquid electrolyte without causing a serious pore blockage and to develop a more suitable technology for the industrial production process, porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) layer-coated PE separators are prepared by the dip-coating method followed by a dry-cast process. Different from previous investigations, a less volatile solvent and a relatively volatile nonsolvent are used to yield a preferable pore structure. A brief introduction on the pore formation mechanism during the dry-cast process is provided. The pore structure of coating layer is found to be successfully controlled by changing evaporation temperature, nonsolvent content, and PVDF concentration. The porous PVDF coating layer-modified separators show better affinity with liquid electrolyte and thermal stability. Especially, the ionic conductivity of the modified separator/liquid electrolyte system with a suitable porous coating layer on the separator could reach two times as that of PE separator/liquid electrolyte system, and the cell assembled with modified PE separator shows better cycle performances. This modification process is proved to be a facile, controllable, and effective method for PE separator modification.
