Abstract:Separators serve as critical components in batteries, bearing the responsibility for battery safety. In addition to the demand for increased flame resistance of separators, there is a growing interest in the additional functions of battery separators. In this work, a multifunctional coating integration strategy is proposed for battery separators via the versatility of metal-organic frameworks. A versatile and high-safety MIP-202@2320 composite separator is engineered and it is integrated into lithium-sulfur batteries. The presence of Cl- and the porous structure of MIP-202 impart flame-retardant characteristics and high electrolyte retention (80%) to resulting separators. Moreover, coupled with the negatively charged electron cloud formed by Cl- ions within the channels, it can selectively impede the polysulfides from migrating toward the anode, while concurrently facilitating the movement of Li+ ions. The assembled lithium-sulfur battery with MIP-202@2320 as the separator maintains an impressive 71.8% capacity retention even after 600 cycles at a 0.5C rate. This multifunctional integration strategy not only boosts the performance of lithium-sulfur batteries but also pioneers a new direction for the design of future battery separators for different kinds of batteries. The MIP-202@2320 composite separator, used in lithium-sulfur batteries, has superior safety and multifunctional properties. With Cl- ions and porous structure, it provides flame resistance and 80% electrolyte retention. The electron cloud of Cl- ions inhibits polysulfide migration but promotes Li+ ion transfer. After 600 cycles at 0.5 C rate, the battery retains 71.8% capacity. image

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSB) have been recognized as a prominent potential next-generation energy storage system, owing to their substantial theoretical specific capacity (1675 mAh g−1) and high energy density (2600 Wh kg−1). In addition, sulfur's abundance, low cost, and environmental friendliness make commercializing LSB feasible. However, challenges such as poor cycling stability and reduced capacity, stemming from the formation and diffusion of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), hinder LSB's practical application. Introducing functional separators represents an effective strategy to surmount these obstacles and enhance the electrochemical performance of LSBs. Here, we have conducted a comprehensive review of recent advancements in functional separators for LSBs about various (i) carbon and metal compound materials, (ii) polymer materials, and (iii) novel separators in recent years. The detailed preparation process, morphology and performance characterization, and advantages and disadvantages are summarized, aiming to fundamentally understand the mechanisms of improving battery performance. Additionally, the development potential and future prospects of advanced separators are also discussed.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are widely regarded as one of the promising next-generation secondary energy storage systems. However, some tricky challenges, such as electrically insulating elemental sulfur, shuttle effect and lithium dendrites, have been limiting its practical application. Modification of separators, which is found as a facile and low-cost settlement, has shown great advantages in solving the above three crucial problems, leading to greatly improved performance of Li–S batteries. In this paper, we summarize recent progresses on separators for Li–S batteries including coatings such as carbon materials, polymers, and inorganic materials, and tailoring multi-functional gel separators to achieve Li–S batteries with high performance. The importance and development directions of functional separators in the further commercialization of Li–S batteries are also discussed.

Abstract:As the demand to energy storage devices for portable electronics and electric vehicles increase, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted much attention for its extremely high energy density.However, the low coulombic efficiency, rapid fading capacity, and poor cycle performance of lithium anode hinder the demonstration of practical Li-S cells.The advanced functional separator/interlayer system have been proposed and verified to retard the shuttle of polysulfides and extend the cycling life of a Li-S cell.In this review, the progress on multifunctional separators/interlayers for lithium sulfur batteries are summarized, including permselective separator inhibiting polysulfide shuttles, separator with low interfacial resistance, and composite electrolyte stabilizing anode and retarding the formation of Li dendrites.New insights into challenge and opportunities of multifunctional separator/interlayer system are also prospected.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been considered as one of the most promising energy storage systems owing to their high specific capacity, high energy density, and environmental benignity. However, Li-S batteries still suffer from severe polysulfide shuttle effect and sluggish reaction kinetics, which are the intrinsic bottlenecks for their practical applications. Multifarious strategies have been adopted to overcome these bottlenecks and achieve high sulfur utilization and capacity retention for Li-S batteries. Among them, functionalizing separators with catalytic materials can not only effectively inhibit polysulfides shuttle effect but also greatly accelerate sulfur redox reaction kinetics, which could be of great significance for the realization of Li-S batteries with high energy density and long cycle life. Here, we have comprehensively reviewed the recent progress of functional separators for Li-S batteries using various catalytic materials, including metals, metal compounds, metal-organic frameworks, covalent-organic frameworks, heterostructures, and metal-free materials. The preparations, characterizations, advantages, and limitations of these catalytic materials are summarized, aiming to shed fresh light on fundamental understanding of catalytic effects for the improved electrochemical performance. Furthermore, engineering of functional separators and prospects of future design for high-performance Li-S batteries are discussed.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for portable devices and electric vehicles are drawing widespread attention to advanced energy storage systems. Over the past few decades, lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have vast potential to act as the next-generation of rechargeable power source due to their high theoretical specific energy, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benignity. However, insufficient sulfur utilization, inferior cyclability, and rate capability originating from the intrinsic insulating features of the sulfur and notorious polysulfide shuttle are major obstacles to fulfilling the industrialization of LSBs. In this respect, the introduction of a functional barrier layer coating on a separator has been verified as an effective strategy to overcome the aforementioned intractable problems. In this review, we focus on summarizing the current progress of the modified polyolefin-based separators (known as functional separators), including functional separator facing cathodes and functional separator facing anodes. According to the working mechanism, functional separator facing cathodes are divided into physical adsorption separators, chemical adsorption separators, catalytic conversion separators, and multifunctional separators. Meanwhile, functional separator facing anodes are classified into physical barrier separators, induced lithium growth separators, regulated lithium nucleation separators, and hybrid mechanism separators. Finally, the future perspective coupled with the practical utilization of functional separators in LSBs is proposed.

Abstract:<p>Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted considerable attention due to their advantages, such as high specific capacity, high energy density, environmental friendliness, and low cost. Therefore, Li-S batteries are one of the most promising electrochemical energy storage systems. However, the practical application of Li-S batteries is limited by some severe faults, such as the dissolution and migration of polysulfides, the insulation and volume expansion during the cycling of elemental sulfur. Considerable research efforts have been dedicated to solving these difficulties from every parts of Li-S batteries, including separators. By rationally designing and optimizing of separators, the reversible capacity, coulombic efficiency, and cycling stability of the Li-S batteries can be effectively improved. This article mainly reviews the research progress of separator modification materials in Li-S batteries, and summarizes the methods and characteristics of separator modification including carbon materials, polymer materials, inorganic compound materials, metal organic framework, and covalent organic framework materials and other metal compounds. From the anode side, the mechanism through the modification of separators can help to stabilize lithium metal anode is also discussed. Finally, the perspectives and challenges of separator modification in Li-S batteries are pointed out.</p>

Abstract:Advancements in battery technology have dramatically increased demand for improvements in separator design, as the separator plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and electrochemical performance of the cells. Current separators, either in commercial usage or under investigation, have yet to meet the high stability and lifespan performance standards necessary to prevent deterioration in the efficiency and reliability of the battery technologies. Recently, considerable effort has been devoted to developing functionalized separators, ranging from designing a variety of new materials and modification methods, and increasingly, to optimizing advanced preparation processes. In order to understand how the mechanisms of separator performance are affected by different properties, we will first summarize recent research progress and then have in-depth discussions regarding the separator's significant contribution to enhancing the safety and performance of the cell. We then provide our design strategy for future separators, which not only meets the requirements of different type of batteries, but also aims for multifunctionality. We hope such a perspective could provide new inspiration in the development of separator research for future battery technologies.

Abstract:This review summarizes various types of functional separators designed to address challenges and enhance the performance of lithium metal batteries (LMBs), with a specific focus on the target electrode in need of improvement. Additionally, the review introduces functional separators designed to address safety issues in LMBs, along with multifunctional separators. As a representative in the post‐lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) landscape, lithium metal batteries (LMBs) exhibit high‐energy densities but suffer from low coulombic efficiencies and short cycling lifetimes due to dendrite formation and complex side reactions. Separator modification holds the most promise in overcoming these challenges because it utilizes the original elements of LMBs. In this review, separators designed to address critical issues in LMBs that are fatal to their destiny according to the target electrodes are focused on. On the lithium anode side, functional separators reduce dendrite propagation with a conductive lithiophilic layer and a uniform Li‐ion channel or form a stable solid electrolyte interphase layer through the continuous release of active agents. The classification of functional separators solving the degradation stemming from the cathodes, which has often been overlooked, is summarized. Structural deterioration and the resulting leakage from cathode materials are suppressed by acidic impurity scavenging, transition metal ion capture, and polysulfide shuttle effect inhibition from functional separators. Furthermore, flame‐retardant separators for preventing LMB safety issues and multifunctional separators are discussed. Further expansion of functional separators can be effectively utilized in other types of batteries, indicating that intensive and extensive research on functional separators is expected to continue in LIBs.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are recognized as one of the second-generation electrochemical energy storage systems with the most potential due to their high theoretical specific capacity of the sulfur cathode (1675 mAhg−1), abundant elemental sulfur energy storage, low price, and green friendliness. However, the shuttle effect of polysulfides results in the passivation of the lithium metal anode, resulting in a decrease in battery capacity, Coulombic efficiency, and cycle stability, which seriously restricts the commercialization of LSBs. Starting from the separator layer before the positive sulfur cathode and lithium metal anode, introducing a barrier layer for the shuttle of polysulfides is considered an extremely effective research strategy. These research strategies are effective in alleviating the shuttle of polysulfide ions, improving the utilization of active materials, enhancing the battery cycle stability, and prolonging the cycle life. This paper reviews the research progress of the separator functionalization in LSBs in recent years and the research trend of separator functionalization in the future is predicted.

Abstract:Separator modification has received extensive attention in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries due to its higher material applicability and simplicity of preparation methods. In recent years, it has been combined with multifunctional heterostructure materials to improve the performance of Li–S batteries. Here, the various effects of heterostructure‐modified separator in Li–S batteries are summarized and prospected in detail from recent research progress. Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries with high energy density and low cost are the most promising competitor in the next generation of new energy reserve devices. However, there are still many problems that hinder its commercialization, mainly including shuttle of soluble polysulfides, slow reaction kinetics, and growth of Li dendrites. In order to solve above issues, various explorations have been carried out for various configurations, such as electrodes, separators, and electrolytes. Among them, the separator in contact with both anode and cathode is in a particularly special position. Reasonable design‐modified material of separator can solve above key problems. Heterostructure engineering as a promising modification method can combine characteristics of different materials to generate synergistic effect at heterogeneous interface that is conducive to Li–S electrochemical behavior. This review not only elaborates the role of heterostructure‐modified separators in dealing with above problems, but also analyzes the improvement of wettability and thermal stability of separators by modification of heterostructure materials, systematically clarifies its advantages, and summarizes some related progress in recent years. Finally, future development direction of heterostructure‐based separator in Li–S batteries is given.

Abstract:Li-ion and Li-S batteries find enormous applications in different fields, such as electric vehicles and portable electronics. A separator is an indispensable part of the battery design, which functions as a physical barrier for the electrode as well as an electrolyte reservoir for ionic transport. The properties of the separators directly influence the performance of the batteries. Traditional polyolefin separators showed low thermal stability, poor wettability toward the electrolyte, and inadequate barrier properties to polysulfides. To improve the performance and durability of Li-ion and Li-S batteries, development of advanced separators is required. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the fabrication and application of novel separators, including the functionalized polyolefin separator, polymeric separator, and ceramic separator, for Li-ion and Li-S batteries. The characteristics, advantages, and limitations of these separators are discussed. A brief outlook for the future directions of the research in the separators is also provided.

Abstract:AbstractThe lithium‐sulfur battery is considered one of the most promising candidates for portable energy storage devices due to its low cost and high energy density. However, many critical issues, including polysulfide shuttling, self‐discharge, lithium dendritic growth, and thermal hazards need to be addressed before the commercialization of lithium‐sulfur batteries. To this end, tremendous efforts have been made to explore battery configurations and components, such as electrodes, electrolytes, and separators, among which the separator plays an especially critical role in addressing aforementioned issues. Thus, this review analyzes the mechanisms and interactions of these critical issues and summarizes both the function of separators and recent progress made towards remedying such issues. Additionally, promising directions for the development of separators in lithium‐sulfur batteries are proposed.

Abstract:The shuttling effect of polysulfides through the separator is detrimental for the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Tremendous efforts have been centered on inhibiting the shuttle effect by improving traditional separators or designing novel separators. Here, recent advances in addressing the shuttling effect through various strategies are overviewed and discussed. The methods of employing inorganic/carbonic ingredients to fabricate bilayer/trilayer separators with filtration and coating processing are evaluated. Functionalization of polyolefin-based separators to realize the electrostatic repulsion between oxygen/nitrogen groups and sulfur-containing species is also discussed. Then, composite separators incorporated with MOF(metal-organic framework)@GO(graphene oxide), GF(glass fiber)@Mxene, nanowires, etc. are analyzed. In the end, perspectives for realizing stable operation of Li-S batteries are presented for future research.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have recently gained extensive attention due to their high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, serious shuttle effect and uncontrolled growth of lithium dendrites restrict them from further commercial applications. As "the third electrode", functional separators are of equal significance as both anodes and cathodes in LSBs. The challenges mentioned above are effectively addressed with rational design and optimization in separators, thereby enhancing their reversible capacities and cycle stability. The review discusses the status/operation mechanism of functional separators, then primarily focuses on recent research progress in versatile separators with purposeful modifications for LSBs, and summarizes the methods and characteristics of separator modification, including heterojunction engineering, single atoms, quantum dots, and defect engineering. From the perspective of the anodes, distinct methods to inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites by modifying the separator are discussed. Modifying the separators with flame retardant materials or choosing a solid electrolyte is expected to improve the safety of LSBs. Besides, in-situ techniques and theoretical simulation calculations are proposed to advance LSBs. Finally, future challenges and prospects of separator modifications for next-generation LSBs are highlighted. We believe that the review will be enormously essential to the practical development of advanced LSBs.

Abstract:High energy density lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are regarded as a promising yet challenging advancement in battery technology. The frequent movement of polysulfide intermediates and sluggish solid-solid reaction kinetics commonly result in irreversible sulfur depletion, diminished coulombic efficiency, and restricted operational lifespan. The development of functional separators for LSBs is recognized as a highly effective approach to address these issues. The construction of functional separators has the potential to effectively mitigate the shuttle effect of polysulfides and promote the uniform deposition of lithium ions, thereby facilitating the formation of dendrite-free anodes. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the modification techniques commonly employed for enhancing the performance of LSB. These techniques include the utilization of monatomic catalysts, transition metal oxides, transition metal carbides, transition metal sulfides, transition metal nitrides, transition metal borides, transition metal phosphides, transition metal selenides, heterostructures of transition metal compounds, as well as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Additionally, recent advancements in this field are integrated to address existing limitations and propose further enhancements. Furthermore, it integrates recent advancements in order to address the deficiencies and enhancements of functional diaphragms. The conclusion of the article emphasizes the superior commercial potential of the new flexible separator compared to the traditional polyolefin separator, indicating a promising direction for the future development of functional separators in order to enhance the performance of LSBs.

Abstract:The advances concerning the modification and functionalization for lithium-ion battery polyolefin separator from both domestic and abroad researches were reviewed.The preparation methods of lithium-ion batteries' separator,the modification for the separators including pore-size distribution,porosity,wettability,thermostability,safety,mechanical properties were discussed.
