Abstract:The fluoroalkyl-modified polyester (PE-Fn) was synthesized by the reaction of polyester resin (PE) and fluorinated isocyanate, and the structure of the synthesized product was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-NMR) and fluorine nuclear magnetic resonance (F-19-NMR). The water and oil wettability of the cured PE coatings with PE-F-n as additives was investigated by contact angle meter. The results showed that the introduction of an extremely low concentration of PE-F-n into PE led to the increase in contact angle of water and diiodomethane on cured PE coatings, and the decrease in the surface free energy. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis showed that the F/C molar ratio in the outer few nanometers was significantly higher than that in the bulk, indicating that the fluoroalkyl groups in PE-F-n had enriched on the coating surface. It was also found that longer fluoroalkyl groups and fluoroalkyl groups with -CF3 at its end had the higher tendency to aggregate on the coating surface. The topological structures of the cured coatings were recorded by an atomic force microscope under tapping mode and the results revealed that there was a strong surface segregation of fluorinated species. Abstract:A new type of fluorinated (meth)acrylates was successfully synthesized through a simple reaction of 2-hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylate (EMA or EA) with the di-or trimer of hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO)n (n=2,3) in a yield of 82%～86%. The structure of desired compounds has been confirmed by spectroscopy analyses including Fourier transform infrared spectrum(FT-IR),nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum(1H-NMR,and 19F-NMR). These fluoro-(meth)acrylates showed a good solubility in common organic solvents such as acetone,tetrahydrofuran (THF),ether,and alcohol,and also a considerable compatibility with non-fluorinated acrylates. Preliminary investigations on their polymerizability with acrylate-based monomers were carried out under UV-initiating conditions and resulted in the polymer films with a moderate hydrophobic surface. It has been demonstrated that the post-heating treatment may enhance the hydrophobicity of UV-curing films dramatically,especially for the coatings modified with (HFPO)3EMA bearing a longer fluorinated side group. When containing 5%～7% of (HFPO)3EMA,the as-prepared polymer coatings exhibited a high hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of near 120°.

Abstract:Fluorine-containing polyester (FPE) was synthesized by the reaction of phthalic anhydride, epichlorohydrin, and 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl glycidyl ether (TFGE) at the catalysis of tetraethylammonium bromide using 1,4-butanediol as the initiator. The structure of FPE was characterized by 1H NMR and 19F NMR, and the result showed that the fluorine in TFGE was introduced into FPE. Fluorine content in FPE was determined by oxygen-flask combustion and fluoride selective electrode. It was found that fluorine content in FPEs increased with the increase of TFGE content. The wettability of water and oil on the cured coating based on FPE was investigated by contact angle meter. Contact angles of water and diiodomethane on the cured coatings first increased with the increase of the fluorine content in FPEs and then remained constant. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis showed that the F/C molar ratio on the coatings surface was much higher than the overall F/C molar ratio, which indicated that fluoroalkyl groups in FPEs had enriched on the coatings surface. Abstract:Fluorine and silicone resin was synthesized by several organic fluorinated silane.The obtained fluorine and silicone resin then reacted with epoxy resin to yield fluorine silicon-epoxy composite resin.The configurations and film-forming qualities of the synthetic resin were investigated,whose results indicated that the modified fluorine silicon-epoxy resin possessed excellent capabilities of both fluorine silicon resin and epoxy resin.The coating prepared by this method was very compact,and perform well in aspects such as adhesion,hardness and hydrophobic property.

Abstract:Hydroxylic fluoropolyacrylates were prepared by solution copolymerization of styrene (St), 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate (2-HPA), butyl acrylate (BA) and fluoroacrylate under various compositions. They were further cured with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) to obtain hydrophobic coatings under ambient condition. The curing reaction was identified by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and gel content analysis. The properties, especially the anti-frosting performance, of the cured coatings were measured. The results indicated that the anti-frosting property was improved by the prescence of the hydrophobic coating. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The organic fluorine modified/containing cationic acrylic resin is prepared via solution polymerization technique using hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) along with butyl acrylate (BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), styrene (St), dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and hydroxy propyl methacrylate (HPMA) as the comonomers, proprylene glycol monomethyl ether (PGME) as the solvent, and 2, 2-Azo-bis-iso-butyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator. The synthesized resin in which fluorine atom is introduced into the polymer chains. The cathodic electrodeposition (CED) coatings were prepared by mixing the synthesized resin and blocked isocyanate. The influence of the amount of organic fluorine on the resin and the resultant CED coatings is investigated in detail. In view of the appearance and hydrophobicity of the film, the optimum amount of organic fluorine is obtained, which is 12.0%. The hydrophobicity and the acid and alkaline resistance properties of the coating film are improved when the organic fluorine monomer is introduced into the resin.

Abstract:Fluorine atoms were introduced into the molecular chain of a phenolic resin (PR) by a two-step acid synthesis process to improve its thermal and hydrophobic properties. The successful synthesis of a fluorinated phenolic resin/phenolic resin blend (F-PR/PR) was proven by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance 19F (F-19-NMR). The thermal properties of F-PR/PR were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and the results indicate that the F-PR/PR had good thermal stability. The hydrophobic properties of PR were effectively modified as demonstrated by the water drop contact angles. The flexural and tribological properties of F-PR/PR were also investigated. The fluorine atom, by virtue of its electronegativity, size and bond strength with carbon, can be used to create composites from F-PR/PR with remarkable properties. For comparison, two other resin blends were also synthesized.

Abstract:Hydrocarbon acrylic copolymer was synthesized by a radical polymerization route. Fluorine-containing copolymer was prepared via a post-fluorine modification method. Hydrocarbon, fluorine-containing, silicon-containing, and fluorosilicone acrylic polyurethane coatings were prepared by curing reaction of the curing agents and mixtures of the synthesized copolymers and amino silicone, respectively. Indoor atmospheric environment, hygrothermal environment, different temperature environment, as well as xenon arc aging environment were employed to investigate the hydrophobicity failure behavior of the coatings. Chemical structure of the coatings was characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrum. Water contact angles of the coatings were monitored during the failure process. Thermostability of the coatings was explored by thermo gravimetric analysis. Surface morphology of the coatings was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Elemental composition of the coating surface was analyzed by a X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The results showed that the acrylic polyurethane coatings were prepared as expected. In addition, the modification mechanism determined the performance of the coatings in different environments. The fluorine-containing coating performed with better hydrophobicity in the indoor atmospheric environment, hygrothermal environment and low-temperature environment, but failed faster in the high temperature and xenon arc aging environments. The silicon-containing coating exhibited relatively stable hydrophobicity in the high temperature and the xenon arc aging environments. The hydrophobicity of the fluorosilicone coating fell in between that of the fluorine- and silicon-containing coatings under all of the experimental conditions. The fluorine-containing components improved the hydrophobicity of the coatings more effectively, while the silicon-containing components contributed more to the thermo and weather resistance property of the coatings.

Abstract:Fluoropolymer coatings, particularly those based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) resins, have a 35 year history of outstanding performance in outdoor applications. However, the chemical inertness of PVDF presents challenges to the paint formulator in that it prevents adhesion to substrates and makes it difficult to disperse pigments. To overcome these difficulties, an acrylic modifier resin is usually added to the PVDF resin. The acrylic modifier is traditionally physically blended with the PVDF resin to improve coating adhesion and enhance pigment dispersion. The physical blending results in a PVDF/acrylic mixture on a macro-molecular scale. ATOFINA Chemicals, Inc. has developed a novel approach to mix the fluoropolymer and acrylic on micro-molecular scale. Because of this intimate mixing, and the wide latitude of the acrylic and fluoropolymer monomers that can be utilized, a wide range of unique properties can be achieved in solvent-base dispersion coatings, and water-borne coatings. The unique properties of the solvent-base and water-borne coatings are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:We have prepared two modifiers, namely, fluorinated polyvinylpolysiloxane and vinyl terminated fluorinated polysiloxane, and carried out miniemulsion polymerization with acrylate monomers to prepare the fluorinated polysiloxane modified polyacrylates. It was found that the vinyl terminated fluorinated polysiloxane can better migrate to the surface of the film, resulting in better hydrophobicity and mechanical properties of the adhesive film. Fluorinated polyvinylpolysiloxane, due to more double bond crosslinking, remains in the film matrix and has limited improvement in the hydrophobicity and mechanical properties of the film. Polyacrylate materials are widely used in textile adhesives, functional finishing agents, architectural coatings, and other fields. In order to improve their hydrophobicity and flexibility, a novel fluorinated polysiloxane was prepared by acid catalyzed bulk ring opening reaction with octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), tetramethyltetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4v ), and methyltrifluoropropylcyclotrisiloxane (D3F ), and its structure was characterized. Then, as a modified monomer, the fluorinated polysiloxane modified polyacrylates was prepared by miniemulsion polymerization. The effects of fluorinated polysiloxane monomers with different vinyl content and molecular weight on the properties of emulsion, film structure and film hydrophobicity were studied. The results showed that when using fluorinated polysiloxane monomer with Mn = 6235, vinyl content of 0.33 mmol/g, and fluorine content of 7.40 mmol/g for modification, the water contact angle on the surface of the adhesive film reached 100.4°, and the water absorption rate was 8.1%, resulting in the best effect. Used for textile printing, the color fastness to dry and wet friction after fabric printing could reach level 4, and the hand feel was soft.

Abstract:Purpose Fluorinated silicon polymers are expected to be adopted in specific coatings to afford outstanding advantages, such as high chemical and photochemical resistance, low surface tension and low refractive index. The modified acrylate resin is prepared via solution polymerization of fluorine and silicon monomers, acrylate monomers and other functional monomers. The purpose of this paper is that the fluorine and silicon monomers such as vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) and hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) and some cheap monomers such as styrene are used to prepare the cationic acrylic resin. Design/methodology/approach The fluorine and silicon modified cationic acrylic resin is prepared via solution polymerization technology, which uses butyl acrylate (BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), styrene (St), HFMA, VTES, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) as the co-polymerized monomers, propylene glycol monomethyl ether (PGME) as solvent and 2,2-Azo-bis-iso-butyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator to create a resin to introduce the Si–O and C–F into the polymer chains. The cathodic electrodeposition (CED) coatings were prepared by mixing the synthetic resin and blocked isocyanate. Findings The influence of the amounts of HFMA and VETS on the resin and the resultant CED coatings is investigated in detail. The optimum amounts of HFMA and VETS are obtained, which is 7–8% and 4–5%, respectively. The hydrophobicity and the acid and alkaline resistance of the film are improved when VETS and HFMA are introduced to co-polymerize with other monomers. Originality/value The fluorine and silicon monomers such as VTES and HFMA and some cheap monomers such as styrene, which are used to prepare the cationic acrylic resin, are seldom reported in the open literature.

Abstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to prepare a fluorinated acrylate resin, which would be synthesised via solution polymerisation of fluorinated monomer, acrylate monomers and other functional monomers. Relevant characterisation and application studies were also carried out. Fluorinated polymers are expected to be adopted in specific coatings to afford outstanding advantages, such as high chemical and photochemical resistance, low surface tension and low refractive index. At present, fluorinated cathodic electrodeposition (CED) coatings are attracting the attention that they deserve and seldom reported. Design/methodology/approach – Cationic fluorinated acrylic resin was successfully prepared by solution polymerisation of dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid initiated by 2,2,-azo-bis-iso-butyronitrile in a solvent of butyl cellosolve. The resultant resin was neutralised with acetic acid. The CED coatings are prepared when moderate amounts of blocked isocyanate and distilled water were added into the resultant resin. Findings – The hydrophobicity of the film is improved when the fluorinated monomer is introduced to co-polymerise with other monomers. The optimum conditions of preparing the resin are as follows: the amount of azodiisobutyronitrile is controlled with the range of 3.0 and 4.0 per cent; the amine value of the resin is 70 mg KOH/g; the hydroxyl value of resin and mole ratio of hydroxyl to isocyanate is 60 mg KOH/g and 1.0/1.0, respectively; the degree of neutralisation of the resin is within the range of 35 and 40 per cent. Practical implications – The cationic fluorinated acrylic resin can be used to be the binder of CED coatings, which can be applied to electrodeposition finishing for high demand of exterior decorative and weather resistance, such as hardware, accessories, office furniture and so on. Originality/value – The cationic fluorinated acrylic resin was successfully prepared by solution polymerisation. The hydrophobicity of the film is improved.

Abstract:Copolymerization of acrylic acid and 1H,1H,11H-perfluoroundecyl acrylate in supercritical carbon dioxide was successfully carried out. The products were obtained in the form of dry white powder with diameter about 0.2μm. Viscosities of 2% aqueous solution of the copolymers were much higher than that of poly(acrylic acid) and it showed a strong dependence on pH, which is due to the intermolecular association.

Abstract:A series of waterborne UV-curable acrylated polyurethanes were synthesized with the objective to improve their mechanical properties and resistance to water.Toluene 2,4-diisocyanate(TDI),polyethylene glycol(PEG),2,2-dimethylolpropionic acid(DMPA),and β-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) were used as the raw materials.1H-NMR analysis shows that less than 15% of the isocyanate groups participated in side reactions during the synthesis reaction.Dynamic light scattering measurements show that the particle size in the dispersions decreased with increasing DMPA content in the polymers.The resistance to water of the cured coatings is better than that of uncured coatings.Both the glass transition temperature and the hardness of the cured coatings increased with increasing acrylate group content in the polymers.

Abstract:Poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) containing perfluoro-octyl pendent groups was prepared by solution polymerization of N,N-dimethylacrylamide in benzene with 0.16-1.25 mol% 2-(N-ethylperfluoro-octane sulfonamido) ethyl acrylate (FX-13(R)) or 2-(N-ethylperfluoro-octane sulfonamido) ethyl methacrylate (FX-14(R)). The copolymer intrinsic viscosity strongly decreases with increasing comonomer content due to intramolecular association. However, the Huggins constant increases more than 40-fold with increasing comonomer content, indicating that intermolecular association increases with increasing comonomer content. Strong Brookfield viscosity enhancements are observed above a critical copolymer concentration varying between 0.5 and 2.0 wt% depending on comonomer type and content. Some of the copolymers show pseudoplastic behaviour whereas others show shear-thickening or both types of behaviour. These observations are consistent with competing inter- and intramolecular micellar association. Fluorescence studies using a perfluorocarbon-substituted pyrene as a probe indicate the formation of hydrophobic microdomains formed by the association of perfluorocarbon groups. Abstract:A series of fluorine-containing acrylate copolymers were prepared by 60Co γ-ray radiation co-polymerization in a mixed acrylate system, including butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide and perfluoroalkylethyl methacrylate (FMA). The yield of the copolymers reached 96% when they were radiated for 34h with the radiation dose of 1kGy/h. Moreover, the surface structure and properties of the copolymers were determined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle (CA) analysis. And the glass-transition temperature was measured by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). It was found that the fluoropolymer was of large water static contact angle and fluorine was enriched at the polymer–air interface. The relationship between the copolymer composition, annealed temperature and static contact angle was also discussed in detail. Furthermore, when the FMA content reached 3%, the cotton treated with our products exhibited better oil repellency.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyoxy-substituted cyclohexene oxides(EFPO1 and EFPO2) were obtained by two-step reactions using the dimer and trimer of hexafluoropropylene oxide and 4-cyclohexene-1,2-dimethanol as main raw materials.The structures of as-synthesized products were confirmed by spectroscopy analyses including FT-IR and 1H NMR.These fluoro-epoxides are compatible with the prepolymers such as bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether,thereby endowing the coatings composed of them with improved hydrophobicity as evidenced by the photoinitiated curing experiments.The preliminary investigation of their UV-curing performance shows that the hydrophobicity increases linearly with increasing fluoro-epoxide content in the composition.As expected,the hydrophobic effect is more pronounced for EFPO2 than EFPO1 at the same conditions,because the former has a longer ferfluoroalkyoxy group.For example,upon addiing 1% mass fraction of EFPO2,the water contact angle of the UV-cured films was 99° and was higher 14° than that found for the films without the fluoro-component,whereas the value for EFPO1-modified films was 87°.When containing 5% EFPO2,high hydrophobic surface was achieved with a water contact angle of 113 for the UV-cured films.In addition,it should be pointed out that the hydrophobic surface can be further improved by heating the UV-cured films at 110 ℃ for 6 h.For the coatings containing 1%~5% EFPO2,the post-heating treatment resulted in a change of the water contact angles from the range 99°~113° to 113°~118°,while the changes were from 87°~100° to 99°~110° for EFPO1 analogs.The thermal migration of fluoro-chains and aggregation on the film surface seems to be responsible for the enhancement in hydrophobicity.Consequently,this new type of fluorine-containing epoxy monomers is expected as the surface modifier used in coatings,inks and release materials.

Abstract:Conventional waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has poor water resistance and poor overall performance, which limits its application in outdoor coatings. A solution to this problem is urgently needed. The introduction of fluorine-containing groups can effectively improve the water resistance of WPU. In this study, a new fluorinated chain extender (HFBMA-HPA) synthesized by free radical copolymerization and epoxy resin (E-44) were used to co-modify WPU, and five waterborne fluorinated polyurethane (WFPU) emulsions with different fluorine contents were prepared by the self-emulsification method. The effects of HFBMA-HPA content on the emulsion particle properties, coating surface properties, mechanical properties, water resistance, thermal stability, and corrosion resistance were investigated. The results showed that the WFPU coating had excellent thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties. As the content of HFBMA-HPA increased from 0 wt% to 14 wt%, the water resistance of the WFPU coating gradually increased, the water contact angle (WCA) increased from 73° to 98°, the water absorption decreased from 7.847% to 3.062%, and the surface energy decreased from 32.8 mN/m to 22.6 mN/m. The coatings also showed impressive performances in the adhesion and flexibility tests in extreme conditions. This study provides a waterborne fluorinated polyurethane material with excellent comprehensive performance that has potential application value in the field of outdoor waterproof and anticorrosion coatings.

Abstract:In this work, a flame retardant curing agent (DOPO-MAC) composed of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide DOPO and methyl acrylamide (MAC) was synthesized successfully, and the structure of the compound was characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR. The non-isothermal kinetics of the epoxy resin/DOPO-MAC system with 1% phosphorus was studied by non-isothermal DSC method. The activation energy of the reaction (Ea), about 46 kJ/mol, was calculated by Kissinger and Ozawa method, indicating that the curing reaction was easy to carry out. The flame retardancy of the epoxy resin system was analyzed by vertical combustion test (UL94) and limiting oxygen index (LOI) test. The results showed that epoxy resin (EP) with 1% phosphorus successfully passed a UL-94 V-0 rating, and the LOI value increased along with the increasing of phosphorus content. It confirmed that DOPO-MAC possessed excellent flame retardance and higher curing reactivity. Moreover, the thermal stability of EP materials was also investigated by TGA. With the DOPO-MAC added, the residual mass of EP materials increased remarkably although the initial decomposition temperature decreased slightly.
