Abstract:The feasibility of the use of urban river sediments as a primary raw material to produce high-insulation brick was assessed in the laboratory. The urban river sediments and clay were chemically, mineralogically and thermally characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermo-gravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry analysis (TG/DSC), respectively. To evaluate the effect of the contents of urban river sediments on pore-forming, large amounts of urban river sediments, ranging from 50% to 70% by mass, were blended with clay and fired at 1000°C, 1050°C and 1100°C. The physical–mechanical properties, including loss on ignition, linear shrinkage, bulk density, compressive strength, and thermal conductivity, as well as the microstructural properties of the fired bricks, were investigated. In addition, the environmental impacts of the fired bricks were also identified using leaching tests. The obtained results indicate that the thermal conductivity of the fired bricks (0.35–0.48W/mK) decreased by at least 40% compared to the values of clay samples (0.82W/mK) due to the formation of highly porous structures, as indicated in the water absorption and SEM results. With the increase of the content of urban river sediments, an expected drop in compressive strength was detected. Considering the balance between the thermal insulation capacity and an acceptable compressive strength, the bricks with 50% urban river sediments fired at 1050°C exhibited more beneficial characteristics and were in compliance with the requirements of GB5101-2003 for common bricks. The results of the leaching tests confirmed that the fired bricks containing urban river sediments are environmentally benign products. Therefore, urban river sediments are suitable as a primary raw material in the production of high-insulation brick.
