Abstract:Electronic current transformers, with excellent properties of simple insulation, small volume, light weight, wide dynamic range, and no magnetic saturation, have been widely used in substations. With the fast improvement of substation voltage grade, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) problem of switching operation overvoltage, especially very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO), on electronic transformers in substations has gotten more and more attention. In this paper, the physical process of VFTO in high voltage substations is analyzed. The high frequency model of Rogowski coil in electronic transformers under VFTO is built, the simulated waveform of the signals at the output ports of Rogowski coil is obtained. It is proved that the distribution parameters model can reflect the high frequency characteristics better by comparing the waveform of distribution parameter model, lumped parameter model and the measured signal waveform.

Abstract:This paper simply introduces a fault of secondary voltage abnormality in a 500 kV capacitor voltage transformer after operation,analysis based on the structure and operation principle of CVT,and the reason is improper installation of capacitor units of capacitive divider in CVT.Fault eliminates and voltage signals indicate properly after regulation for capacitor units on site.At the same time,advisable suggestions propose for installation and commissioning of CVT before operation.

Abstract:The lightning intruding waves in 220 kV GIS substation model was built by using ATP-EMTP software, calculate the lightning over-voltages on electric equipment in substation with different running modes, different grounding resistance and lightning shielding failure. The results show that the maximum over-voltage on electric equipment happened in single bus with single transformer; The smaller the grounding resistance, the smaller the over-voltage value on electric equipment in substation; the lightning shielding failure will not cause harm to substation. Finally, this paper used statistical methods to calculate the years of the safe operation of the substation. It is concluded that the safe running times of substation can meet the requirement when arresters were installed at the incoming lines and the entrance of transformer.

Abstract:In series compensation stations of the UHV AC demonstration project in China, capacitive voltage transformers (CVTs) failed several times during the operation of disconnecting switches (DSs). The reasons for this failure are analyzed in this paper. The stray inductor, the stray capacitor between the platform and ground and the capacitor of the CVT forms a resonant circuit in series compensation stations, causing repeated oscillating overvoltage and impulse current acting on the CVTs during DS operation. A full-scale experiment indicates that the oscillating frequency is approximately 200 Hz and the repeating frequency is approximately 0.5 MHz. The simulation experiment in the laboratory indicates that the partial welding mode and the partial high electric field are the main causes of damage to the CVT element insulation. A mechanism of the insulation damage is proposed, and some suggestions are given based on our results.

Abstract:The mechanism of switching overvoltage occurred in the valve hall and DC switchyard of ��1100kV UHVDC converter station is analyzed based on Zhundong-Sichuan ��1100 kV UHVDC power transmission project. Different faults are simulated, such as the grounding fault of HV winding of Y/Y converter transformer at valve side, the grounding fault of LV winding of Y/Y converter transformer at valve side, the phase-to-phase switching surge at AC side, the AC power loss at inverter side, the full-voltage starting, the inverter blocking without by-pass de-blocking, and the corresponding overvoltages exerted on the equipments of converter station are calculated, which provide the reference for the type selection, test and insulation coordination of station equipments.

Abstract:The line commutated converter based high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) system is a widely used long-distance power transmission system. The sending terminal grid of the DC transmission system exhibits the characteristics of a high proportion of power electronic equipment. The virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control strategy has been proved to be an effective technology to improve the stability of weak grids. Commutation failure is a common fault in the LCC-HVDC system, which causes the voltage amplitude of the sending terminal grid to decrease first and then increase. The mathematical model of the power electronic equipment adopting VSG control under commutation failure is established. Based on the mathematical model, an enhanced VSG control is proposed to suppress the overvoltage of the sending terminal grid voltage under commutation failure. The effectiveness of the enhanced VSG control strategy is verified by the simulation model of grid-connected converter connected to an LCC-HVDC transmission system based on Matlab/Simulink.

Abstract:Yin‐dong ± 660 kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Power Transmission Project, the first ± 660 kV DC transmission project built around the world, is the symbolic project at this voltage level and a major transmission line of Shandong grid. When the HVDC system is operated in monopole ground return mode, the vibration and noise of the ac power transformer will get enhanced during field monitoring. This paper describes the abnormal vibration and noise in detail. By analyzing the abnormal phenomena and monitoring the direct current passing through the neutral point of transformer, this paper shows that the main reason is the monopole grounding operation of Yin‐dong DC system. Finally, measures are provided to prevent the occurrence of abnormal vibration and noise of alternating current (AC) power transformers.

Abstract:The application of distributed renewable energy (DER) drives the development of DC microgrid based on voltage source converter (VSC). And short circuit fault protection is a significant challenge for the development of VSC based DC microgrid. This paper proposes a transient modeling method for VSC based DC microgrid. Firstly, the transient characteristics of VSC under DC bus voltage control mode and active power control mode are analyzed. And then the faulty DC microgrid model, which consists of VSC model and DC line model, is modeled. And the calculation expressions of state variables in DC microgrid are presented. Next, the correctness of proposed modeling approach is verified by comparing with the electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation by Matlab/Simulink. Moreover, the case study on the parameters configuration of DC microgrid protection devices shows that the transient modeling method can be effectively used in faulty DC microgrid analysis. The method proposed in this paper can not only ensure the calculation efficiency, but also improve the accuracy of DC microgrid analysis on fault.

Abstract:For an UHVDC power system,the over-voltage level of its converter stations impacts directly on the insulation coordination of the stations equipments and the reliability of the system operation.With Xiluo-Zhexi ±800 kV UHVDC transmission project as an object,this paper makes simulations on various typical fault conditions such as ground fault on the valve side of HV/LV converter transformer,phase-to-phase switching impulse from AC side,full-voltage starting and DC line fault,resulting in the maximum values of over-voltage and energy for related arresters in Xiluodu and Zhexi stations,and thus providing basis for the insulation coordination design of the station equipments as well as their type selection,manufacture and test.
Study on VFTO of AC Ultra-high Voltage GIS Substation

Abstract:The very fast transient overvoltage(VFTO) of the ultra-high voltage GIS system may pose the threats to the GIS main insulation and the main transformer.The southeastern Shanxi ultra-high GIS substation prospective time model of the connection mode of a 3/2 circuit breaker was built with the EMTP simulation software.The possible maximum VFTO produced by switching the main transformer,outgoing line and bus line was calculated.The possible maximum VFTO produced by switching the main transformer was estimated to reach 2.51 p.u.,which will cause severe damages to the main insulation and interturn insulation of the GIS.However,the VFTO produced by transferring outgoing line and bus line will not cause any damage.The measures of following the normal operating sequences and completely eliminating the VFTO produced by transferring the main bus for the 3/2 circuit breaker were indicated.For the ultra-high voltage substation,the disconnector should be separated after separating the high and low circuit breakers in the two sides of the main transformer.For the large-scale power plant,it was suggested to install the generator circuit breaker(GCB) and separate the GCB and the circuit breaker in the high-voltage side of the main transformer followed by separating the disconnector.By these measures,the VFTO produced by operating the main transformers in ultra-high voltage substation and large-scale power plant can be eliminated completely,ensuring the safety of the main insulation of the GIS ontology and the interturn insulation of the main transformer.

Abstract:The transient electromagnetic field generated by isolation switch's operation is one of the important sources of electromagnetic interference in substation.To evaluate the level of electromagnetic disturbance at the primary side of the transformer,we analyzed the electromagnetic transient process.Then,we established models of distributed parameter in bus and models of switching arc's extinguishing and restriking.Based on these models,numerical calculations of power network model under the operation mode of single-phase transformer and single circuit line were conducted,and characteristics of over-voltage and over-current were evaluated synthetically.The simulation results demonstrate that the bus current is composed of a series of cone-shaped damped oscillatory waves,the maximum voltage to ground among jump waves between isolation switch and circuit breaker is 586.2 kV,and the disturbance voltage conducted to transformer decreases to 514.4 kV,which will not cause insulation breakdown of main transformer.Moreover,interference signal's frequency is determined by the length of the bus and the short line,and is limited in the range of 32.87 MHz.

Abstract:Transient processes are generated by operations of disconnect switches and circuit breakers in the AC side of converter stations. Several trips in different plusmn500-kV HVDC converter stations in china happened recently. Characteristics of transient Electromagnetic Interference due to switching operations are summarized based on onsite tests in a practical converter station. Measurements are performed to analyze the propagation mechanism of transient processes due to variable switching operations. The EM noises generated by switching operations in secondary systems especially the measuring system are analyzed as well. The high frequency characteristics of DC shunts, which is the most important path for EM noise propagation, is analyzed based on tests and calculation.

Abstract:The VSC-MTDC transmission technology is a new power system that realizes multiple power supply and multiple power receiving. In view of the fault isolation requirement, resonant switches are equipped in the Zhoushan VSC-MTDC system, however, the influence of overvoltage on the resonant switch when the DC system fault is not fully considered. In this paper, the problem of resonant switch overvoltage in Zhoushan VSC-MTDC system was analysed, and the dynamic process and the insulation effect on existing equipment of single-pole fault overvoltage after one transmission line exit operation was described. Finally, the corresponding modification measures was proposed. The work in this paper provided a reference for the safe and stable operation of the resonant switch in VSC-MTDC system.

Abstract:During the system commissioning test of Ultra High Voltage (UHV) project with Series Capacitors Banks (SCB), the adjacent capacitor voltage transformer (CVT) was damaged during the switching operation of disconnectors of SCB. In this paper, the transients on adjacent CVT caused by disconnector switching of UHV SCB were studied by simulation. The causes of damage of CVT were analyzed. The effectiveness of suppressing the transients by use of damping resistor of disconnector, series reactor and series resistor were studied by simulation. In UHV AC test base, a test circuit was established. It includes true type UHV SCB platform, UHV CVT and disconnector. Tests were carried out when the circuit was with or without limitation measures. Test results were compared with the simulation results. The simulation and Test results were in agreement.

Abstract:In Gas-Insulated Substation (GIS), the Transient Enclosure Voltage (TEV) would threaten the reliability of secondary devices. Studying the propagation law of TEV can provide reference for suppression method of TEV. In this paper, field measurement and theoretical simulation were taken to study the TEV of a 330kV GIS. At first, the TEV caused by operation of disconnecting switch was measured and analyzed. Then, this paper built a simulating model based on electrical main connection to obtain the TEV under the maximum residual voltage. Finally, a method was proposed to reduce the TEV. The simulation results showed that reducing the grounding inductance can reduce the TEV effectively. The study shows that: (1) The maximum voltage of TEV can reach to 4.9kV, the transient time is among 100ms to 160ms, and the main frequency ranged from 11MHz to 35MHz. the maximum value of TEV does not always appear at the enclosure under out-line bushing in an operation, which is related to the TEV propagation path. (2) The TEV generated by the disconnecting switch near out-line bushing is much more serious than the TEV generated near the bus. The TEV generated during opening operation is more serious than the TEV generated during closing. (3) Reducing the equivalent inductance of grounding can reduce the value of TEV. When the equivalent inductance decrease 40%, the maximum voltage can be reduced by 21%. So reducing the equivalent inductance may be a possible effective way to reduce the value of TEV.

Abstract:Shunt reactors are commonly used in substations to compensate the capacitive reactive power of electric power systems. When a vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) switches off shunt reactors, an overvoltage with high amplitude and high frequency (HF) is generated because of the current chopping and multireignition of the VCB. The objective of this paper is to build the 40.5 kV statistical VCB model, simulate the overvoltage caused by switching off shunt reactors in a 35 kV substation, and analyze the impact of five types of overvoltage suppression measures under identical VCB conditions and substations. The statistical VCB model is established in MATLAB/Simulink and verified by the field tests. Three basic factors are considered in this model: chopping current value, dielectric dynamic insulation strength and HF current quenching capability of the VCB. The simulation results show that the suppression effects in descending order are the phase-controlled VCB, adding surge arresters, adding RC snubbers, double-break VCB and increasing the cable length.

Abstract:Secondary devices arc important components of a substation. The overvoltage due to the short circuit fault may interfere and do harm to the secondary devices. Based on the short circuit test of a 500 kV converter station, the overvoltage of secondary cables in the substation was measured. The ground potential distribution of the grounding grid was calculated. Results show that the ground potential difference between two ends of secondary cables may cause overvoltage between core and shield and they are in the same order of magnitude.

Abstract:The CVT equipment running on site is slightly modified to form a hybrid CVT to achieve transient overvoltage measurement, which is theoretically feasible and practical. In order to study the voltage division method based on the hybrid CVT to measure the overvoltage of the power system, that is, the low voltage capacitor C3 is connected in series between the low voltage terminal of the medium voltage capacitor C2 of the traditional CVT and the ground, and the transient overvoltage measurement is realized through C3. This article uses ATP-EMTP to establish its high-frequency transient model for simulation analysis. For further verification, a power frequency voltage test and an impulse voltage test were carried out on the 110kV hybrid CVT produced by Taikai Transformer Factory, focusing on the analysis of the partial voltage characteristics of the capacitor C3. The simulation results show that the C3 partial pressure method can achieve a relatively accurate measurement of the transient overvoltage. The test results show that the voltage across C3 is affected by uncertain factors and has an impact phenomenon. The above analysis process and results have certain practical value for designing actual products.
