Abstract:One-dimensional nanochains consisting of crystalline iron–nickel nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a simple cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) mediated assembly method. The structure and magnetic properties of the nanochains were investigated. The product is composed of nanochains with a diameter of about 90–110nm and length about several micrometers. A possible formation mechanism of these 1D particle assemblies was proposed. It was found that CTAB can serve as an effective cross-linker and plays an important role in the formation of nanochains. CTAB with low concentration can adsorb on the surface of particles and partially compensate the negative surface charge, leading to an anisotropic distribution of the residual surface charges. And this extrinsic electric dipole formation is responsible for the linear organization of the particles into chains. As-prepared iron–nickel nanochains exhibit ferromagnetism at room temperature with a much enhanced magnetic coercivity over three orders of magnitude larger than that of bulk permalloy. The imaginary part μ″ of the permeability for FeNi3-chain/wax composite shows a broad resonance peak in the frequency range 150MHz to 4GHz. Meanwhile, the position and width of resonance peak can be tuned via magnetic-field orientation treatment.

Ni/Ni3C Core-Shell Nanochains and Its Magnetic Properties: One-Step Synthesis at low temperature

Abstract:One-dimensional Ni/Ni3C core-shell nanoball chains with an average diameter by around 30 nm were synthesized by means of a mild chemical solution method using a soft template of trioctylphosphineoxide (TOPO). It was revealed that the uniform Ni nanochains were capped with Ni3C thin shells by about 1 to 4 nm in thickness and each Ni core consists of polygrains. The coercivity of the core-shell nanochains is much enhanced (600 Oe at 5 K) and comparable with single Ni nanowires due to the one-dimensional shape anisotropy. Deriving from the distinctive structure of Ni core and Ni3C shell, this architecture may possess a possible bi-functionality. This unique architecture is also useful for the study on the magnetization reversal mechanism of one-dimensional magnetic nanostructure.

Room temperature synthesis and one-dimensional self-assembly of interlaced Ni nanodiscs under magnetic field

Abstract:Uniform and aligned nickel nanochains with interlaced-nanodiscs structure were first synthesized by using a template-free magnetic-field-assisted method at room temperature. The interlaced-disc nanochains were composed of nanodiscs with diameters of similar to 90 nm and thicknesses of similar to 10 nm. An attachment process has been proposed to explain the observed growth of the nanodiscs. With concentration of the OH-increased, the morphology of the products transforms from star-to interlaced-nanodisc-like nanochains. Systematic magnetic measurements demonstrate that the well-aligned interlaced-nanodisc-like Ni nanochains have coercivity of about 300 Oe and effective anisotropy of about five times more than the bulk value.

Abstract:A series of pure Ni thin chains with particle diameters ranging from 15 to 80 nm were successfully synthesized by a wet chemical method. Magnetization measurements for the Ni chains reveal that the saturation magnetization increases and the coercivity decreases with increasing particle diameter. The magnetization reversal mechanism of both the samples with a diameter of 30 and 50 nm can be described by the model of “chain of spheres”. Using the fanning mode, the calculated coercivities and the remnant ratios agree well with the experimental results. Surprisingly, the coercivity is greatly enhanced, reaching as high as 790 Oe at T = 5 K for the Ni chains with a diameter of ∼15 nm, which are composed of single-crystal particles. Meanwhile, in the degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) solutions with Fe0 nanoparticles as reducing agents, Ni nanochains with a diameter of ∼80 nm were added, and the results indicate that the sample could serve as a good catalyst in dechlorination systems.

Abstract:Magnetic properties with 3 different sizes of Ni nanochains, synthesized by a technique of wet chemical solution, have been investigated experimentally. The sample sizes are 50 nm, 75 nm, and 150 nm with a typical length of a few microns. The characterizations by XRD and TEM reveal that the samples consist of Ni nano-particles forming one dimensional (1D) chain-like structure. The magnetic properties have been investigated by FC, ZFC measurements and M-H measurements. The results can be well explained within the context of core-shell model. First of all, the freezing of disordered spins in the shell layer have resulted in a peak-like structure on the ZFC curve. The peak position occurs around TF 13 K. With the 50 nm sample, the field dependent behavior of TF(H) has been investigated in detail. It is well described by the de Almeida-Thouless (AT) equation for the surface spin glass state. Secondly, the shape anisotropy of 1D structure has caused a wide separation between the FC and ZFC curves. This is mainly attributed to the blocking of the core magnetism. Thirdly, by the M-H measurement in the low field region, the open hysteresis loop measured at 5 K < TF is significantly enlarged in comparison with that taken at T > TF. This indicates that a significant part of the contribution to the magnetic irreversibility at T < TF is coming from the disordered spins in the shell layer. Lastly, with reducing sample size, the coercivity, HC, increases, whereas the saturation magnetization goes down dramatically. These imply that, as the sample size reduces, the effect of shape anisotropy becomes larger in the magnetization reversal process and the contribution to the magnetism from the ferromagnetically ordered core becomes smaller.

Abstract:Magnetic chains of hollow cobalt nanoparticles (450-750 nm) have been synthesized by using poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as a template in an ethylene glycol solution. In this process, CoCl2.6H2O was reduced by N2H4.H2O in the presence of PVP. All of the Co nanoparticles are hollow with a shell of 40 nm and self-assembled into a chainlike structure that is as long as ~10 micron. At 300 K, the branched hollow Co nanoparticle chains exhibit a saturation magnetization of 37.5 emu/g, a remnant magnetization of approximately 1.55 emu/g, and a coercivity of about 66 Oe, which is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of the bulk

Abstract:A general synthetic method has been developed to fabricate and assemble ferromagnetic transition metal nanofibers. By employing the novel electrospinning technique followed by subsequent heat treatment, we have successfully prepared uniform nanofibers of Fe, Co, and Ni with diameters of similar to 25 nm and lengths longer than 100 mu m. Using a specially designed fiber collector, we can conveniently assemble magnetic nanofibers into aligned arrays. The electrospun magnetic metal nanofibers have unique magnetic properties, with much enhanced coercivities relative to bulk materials. The outstanding features of this approach to get one-dimensional magnetic nanostructure are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of assembly. Therefore, electrospun magnetic nanofibers can potentially be used in fabrication of high-density magnetic recording, magnetic sensors, flexible magnets, and spintronic devices.

Abstract:Well-aligned and uniform Nickel nanochains with diameters ranging from 20 to 110 nm have been synthesized using a simple template-free solution-phase method using environment friendly reagents under diverse temperature and magnetic field. Our results indicate that the size and morphology of as-prepared nanochains can be controlled by adjusting the reaction temperature and the applied magnetic fields, respectively. The formation of the aligned chains can be explained by the interactions of magnetic dipoles in the presence of magnetic field. Systematical magnetic measurements demonstrate that the saturation magnetization of the synthesized samples depends crucially on the particle size. Furthermore, the magnetic anisotropy of the well-aligned nickel nanochains is dominated by the shape anisotropy.
Nickel Chains Assembled by Hollow Microspheres and Their Magnetic Properties

Abstract:Nickel nanochains assembled with submicrometer-sized hollow spheres were synthesized through a mild polyol reduction method by using PVP as the soft template. The resulting fiberlike superstructures were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy; and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. A self-assembly mechanism of PVP-assisted bubble templating is responsible for the formation of hierarchical superstructures. It was found that PVP concentration plays a key role in determining both the morphology and the further self-assembly process of nickel hollow fibers. This first synthesis of such hierarchical structures implies a simple and inexpensive way to prepare transition metal superstructures on a large scale. Magnetic measurements by SQUID were also carried out to explore their magnetic properties; the micromagnetic simulation result by OOMMF code showed good agreement with the characters of our samples.

Abstract:Nanoscale magnetic materials have been receiving increasing interest for their potential applications. One-dimensional magnetic particles chain of polycrystalline nickel was prepared by a simple template-free method under magnetic field. Based on solution reduction reaction of Ni2+, metallic nickel was deposited and synchronously self-assembled into chains under magnetic field. The results show that the chain of polycrystalline nickel was several micrometer in length and several hundreds nanometer in diameter. VSM measurements indicate the magnetic properties of chains formed can be modulated by the reaction time and the solution concentration. It is suggested that the magnetic field be an effective and tunable way to the fabrication one-dimensional chains of magnetic materials.

Abstract:A series of highly uniform one-dimensional Ni nanochains, with diameters ranging from 20 to 200 nm, have been synthesized by a facile, template-free, wet chemical method at diverse temperature and magnetic field. Our results indicate that the crystallite size, diameter and length of the prepared nanochains depend critically on the reaction temperature. The characteristic thermodynamic cohesive energies, Delta E-D and Delta E-L, are obtained for the formation of the Ni nanochains. In addition, the chain length also depends on the applied field because of the Zeeman energy of the magnetic Ni nanoparticles. For the morphology control, an external field is required in order to obtain axially aligned rather than dendritic nanochains. The size-dependent magnetic properties are studied systematically. The saturation magnetization is shown to reduce inversely with the chain diameter, attributable to a core-shell structure. The thickness of the shell which encloses the ferromagnetic Ni core is determined to be about 2.3-3.4 nm.
Spontaneous self-agglomeration of magnetic nanoparticles into nanowires

Abstract:A newly developed method for the formation of nanowires by self-aggregation of nanoparticles is presented in this paper. Co3C, Co-rich, and Ni nanoparticles dispersed on holey carbon grids are inserted in a vacuum oven and are co-annealed with PolyChloroTriFluoroEthylene (PCTFE) at 375 degrees C. No external electric or magnetic fields were applied. High resolution electron microscopy (HREM) was extensively used to determine the shape, size distribution and crystallographic phase of the starting and produced materials. Interestingly, after an annealing circle of 72 hours, the nanoparticles seem to self-agglomerate into nanowires which have diameters in the 5-20 nm range and lengths exceeding at cases 1 micron. The diameter of the produced wires is in the same range as the diameter of the initial nanoparticles, further supporting the notion that the nanowires have formed out of nanoparticle agglomeration. Close inspection of nanowire HREM images shows that the core structure of nanowires wider than approximately 11 nm resembles linked nanoparticles. Phase identification performed using the HREM images reveals the core is of the same phase/material as the starting nanoparticles. Since nanowires appear to form over holes on the holey carbon grid, a base growth mechanism is proposed. The fluorocarbon vapour decomposes over the transitional metal nanoparticles and carbon tubules start growing. The nanoparticles appear to be trapped inside the tubules where their close proximity enhances their fusion into a continuous core. At the studied temperature, the nanoparticle fusion is seen to be limited by the size of the nanoparticles manifested by continuous cores only in the thin nanowires. The process presented here shows that nanoparticles can spontaneously self-align into nanowires in a way and to an extent never reported before. Therefore there is certainly scope for studying this method further to reveal more information about the catalytic action of transitional metals on hydrocarbons and the exact nanowire formation mechanism. Although it is currently a matter of speculation, this process might lead to the effortless growth of nanowires at particular places when building miniature circuits.

Abstract:Peapodlike Ni/Ni3S2 chains of about 30 nm in outer diameter, with Ni cores of 10–15 nm, can be synthesized by a sacrificial template route. The Ni3S2 shell exhibits paramagnetic properties with a mass susceptibility of χ ≈ 5 × 10−5 emu (gOe)−1, while the ferromagnetic Ni cores show a superparamagnetic behavior with a blocking temperature of TB ≈ 130 K. The shape anisotropy of the chainlike structure is determined as 5.0 × 104 J·m−3, which is larger than the bulk magnetocrystalline anisotropy by one order of magnitude. The demagnetization factor is determined as ΔN = 0.29. The sample provides an ideal structure for studying the magnetization reversal property by the chain‐of‐sphere model. The observations on the formation of the peapod structure verify a growth mechanism of the nanoscale Kirkendall effect. Based on the preparation of peapod chains, a series of nickel sulfide hollow chains with average diameters of 25, 50, and 100 nm are fabricated. In addition, the phase transition for hollow chains from Ni3S2 to NiS is studied.

Abstract:Magnetite nanoclusters with an average size of about 120 nm have been prepared and allowed to self-assemble into one-dimensional (1D) nanochain structures with the average length about of 2 mu m by a simple magnetic-field-induced (MFI) assembly approach (0.20 T). The constituent, phase, and morphology of these I D nanochains have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Magnetic measurement reveals that these I D nanochains are weakly ferromagnetic at room temperature. In this paper, we discuss the influence of magnetization time and strength of external magnetic field on the formation of I D nanochains. We also show that, by changing the amount of hydrogen peroxide in the starting materials, I D nanochains with different interparticle spacing can be obtained. This I D nanochain structure with different interparticle spacing would be an ideal system for the further study of magnetization properties of ID ordered magnetic nanostructures.

Abstract:Although the average crystallite size (23 nm) is very close to a critical radius of superparamagnetism, a magnetic hardening (coercive field and saturation magnetization) was observed in interacting single-domain nanogranular nickel ferrite electrospun nanowires as compared with the bulk. The phenomena can be attributed to a small change in the cation occupancy on the spinel sites from (Fe3+)A(Ni2+Fe3+)BO4 to [F1−δ3+Niδ2+] A[Ni1−δ2+Fe1+δ3+] BO4 (δ = 3.67%), and an additive interaction of the “chain of spheres” type. The larger shape anisotropy contribution (Keff = 8.24 × 104 erg/cm3) is also as a factor leading to enhanced coercive field.
Facile Synthesis of Bimetallic Ag/Ni Core/sheath Nanowires and Their Magnetic and Electrical Properties.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile method for coating Ag nanowires with uniform, ferromagnetic sheaths made of polycrystalline Ni. A typical sample of these core/sheath nanowires had a saturation magnetization around 33 emu g(-1). We also demonstrated the use of this magnetic property to align the nanowires by simply placing a suspension of the nanowires on a substrate in a magnetic field and allowing the solvent to evaporate. The electrical conductivity of these core/sheath nanowires (2 × 10(3) S cm(-1)) was two orders of magnitude lower than that of bulk Ag (6.3 × 10(5) S cm(-1)) and Ni (1.4 × 10(5) S cm(-1)). This is likely caused by the transfer of electrons from the Ag core to the Ni sheath due to the difference in work function between the two metals. The electrons are expected to experience an increased resistance due to spin-dependent scattering caused by the randomized magnetic domains in the polycrystalline, ferromagnetic Ni sheath. Studies on the structural changes to the Ni coating over time under different storage conditions show that storage of the nanowires on a substrate under ambient conditions leads to very little Ni oxidation after 6 months. These Ag/Ni core/sheath nanowires show promise in areas such as electronics, spintronics, and displays.
Self-Assembled Metal Molecular Networks by Nanoconfinement.

Abstract:Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) metal molecular networks (MMNs) often exhibit a nanoconfinement effect and high degree of anisotropy, which are highly diverse in their mechanical, electronic, and magnetic functionalities. Here we report an interfacial self-assembly of mechanically robust 2D MMNs, in which 3d transition metals are interconnected via molecular thiol bridges. The Langmuir-Schafer assembled freestanding 2D nanosheets exhibit highly desired anisotropic charge transport and spin susceptibility, in which light and magnetic field induced charge transfer regulates the electronic interactions. Meanwhile, the mechanistic studies involving electronic structure reveal the molecular metal packing structure-controlled nanoconfinement and charge transfer. This study opens the door to 2D ultrathin metal coordination nanostructures for emerging functional materials and devices.

Abstract:Magnetic chains self-assembled from urchin-like hierarchical Ni nanostructures have been successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method requiring 4 h at 115 degrees C without any template or surfactant. The individual urchin-like hierarchical nanostructures have an average diameter of 2-4 mu m and are composed of well-aligned sword-like nanopetals growing radially from the surfaces of the spherical particles. The products were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric analysis (TGA-DSC). A rational formation mechanism of magnetic chains was proposed. Magnetic hysteresis measurements revealed that the as-synthesized Ni chain-like architectures display ferromagnetic behavior with saturation magnetization, remanent magnetization, and coercivity values of 52.58 emu/g, 5.82 emu/g, and 211.67 Oe, respectively.

Abstract:NixZn1-x alloy nanowires were successfully prepared by the templated electrodeposition technique. The morphology and the microstructures of as-deposited nanowires were examined by scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope and electron diffraction. It is demonstrated that the content of magnetic element Ni in the nanowires can be easily adjusted by changing the ingredients of the electrolyte, the deposited current density and the deposited voltage, which is critical to tune the magnetic property of the nanowires. X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction analysis indicate that the NixZn1-x nanowires exhibit different structures with the variation in the quantity of nickel in the nanowires. It is expected that these heterogeneous alloy nanowires will have a potential application in nanoscale giant-magnetoresistance devices.

Abstract:Chains of superparamagnetic (SPM) Ni nanoparticles of 20 and 33 nm in diameter are synthesized by a facile, template-free, wet chemical method in magnetic field. The blocking temperature for the sample of 20 nm appears at T(B) approximately 255 K, above which the sample exhibits SPM behaviors by a M(H) measurement. At T < T(B), the temperature dependent coercivity, Hc(T), is beyond the description by the simple two-well model proposed by Neel and Brown in the early day. In contrast, for the Ni nanochains of diameter larger than the coherence length, Lcoh approximately 25 nm, the magnetization reversal properties are well described by this model. The magnetization reversal behavior of the SPM Ni nanochains with the diameter much smaller than the coherence length is one of the interesting points to study. Possible transition from the localized magnetization reversal mode in the high temperature end to the coherently rotational mode at low temperature is discussed.
