Abstract:To further promote the research and application of resin type waterproof adhesive layer materials, the types, relevant specifications, and research trends of resin type waterproof adhesive layer in China are comprehensively investigated. The performance evaluation indicators, performance requirement, and requirements in different specifications are systematically analyzed, and the key performance evaluation indicators are recommended. The basic properties of common resin type waterproof adhesive layer materials are studied, and the bonding properties of different resin waterproof adhesive layers were compared and evaluated. The results showed that pull-out strength, shear strength, tensile strength, elongation at break, low temperature flexibility, and impermeability are the key performance evaluation indicators of resin waterproof adhesive layer. The tensile property, corrosion resistance, and water impermeability of resin type waterproof adhesive layer material are good, the flexibility of epoxy resin type waterproof adhesive layer material is poor, and the flexibility of methyl methacrylate (MMA) waterproof adhesive layer material is good. The bonding performance of the epoxy resin waterproof adhesive layer is better than that of the MMA. As the temperature rises, the bonding performance of the two waterproof adhesive layers is significantly reduced. At 60°C, the average pull-out strengths of the epoxy resin and MMA waterproof adhesive layer were 1.83 MPa and 1.47 MPa, respectively.

Design and Construction of Cofferdam for Non-Navigable Span Approach Bridge of Pingtan Straits Rail-cum-Road Bridge

Abstract:The non‐navigable span approach bridge of the Pingtan Straits Rail‐cum‐Road Bridge over the shallow water area (the water depth being less than 15 m) is a 48‐m span prestressed con‐crete girder bridge .The foundations for the bridge are the bored piles that were constructed ,using the cofferdams .A cofferdam for the construction of the piles is the steel boxed cofferdam structure that has the plan dimensions of 14 .8 × 23 m and the height of 12 .3 m and in the cofferdam ,two tiers of the internal supports were arranged .Through the calculation of the load cases of anti‐buo‐ying of the cofferdam by pumping out the water and anti‐sinking of the cofferdam after casting the concrete for the pile cap under the condition of base sealing of the cofferdam ,it was determined that the depth of the base sealing concrete for the cofferdam should be 2 m .With reference to the sea condition characteristic of the Pingtan Straits and in thorough consideration of the wave force action and the great tidal difference influence ,the cofferdam was integrally assembled and was in‐tegrally lowered to its designed elevation ,using the jacks after the bored piles were constructed .In the cofferdam ,3 tiers of the guiding and limiting devices were also arranged in order to ensure the safety of the cofferdam at the time the cofferdam was being lowered into the water .After the base for the cofferdam was sealed and the water in the cofferdam was pumped out ,the slinging system of the cofferdam was installed for the second time ,the hangers and slinging corbels were installed again in order to accommodate the construction of the pile cap .The side plates and bottom plate of the cofferdam were connected by pins and the diagonal struts were welded to fix the side plates and bottom plate in order to resist the vibration caused by the wave forces .

Abstract:Currently, there is no unified standard for the design and testing of bridge deck waterproofing systems in China. In the application of waterproofing systems, there are many types of materials to be selected, and the selection of schemes is blind, with varying quality inspection and control standards. Therefore, a unified evaluation system should be determined based on the characteristics of each waterproofing material, combined with usage conditions and construction, to select suitable waterproofing materials, and to optimize the bridge deck waterproofing system based on the AHP analytic hierarchy process. By analyzing the various factors and related indicators that affect the bridge deck pavement waterproof system, a multi-level and multi-index evaluation structure model is established. Relevant experts in the field are used to score the multi-level indicators and evaluate the importance of each indicator. Then, a judgment matrix of each level of indicators is constructed by using the analysis method promoted layer by layer by AHP to calculate its importance and conduct consistency test. Finally determine the importance of each program, to achieve quantitative selection of more reasonable programs.

Abstract:This paper studies the adhesive behavior of a waterproof layer used between a concrete-bridge deck and an asphalt–concrete overlay. The laboratory direct-shear and pull-off tests were designed to measure the interface adhesive strengths. A three-dimensional, finite-element model was developed to analyze the interfacial shear stress and tensile stress in response to vehicle loading. Results indicate that an interface friction coefficient of 0.5 could achieve high interfacial shear strength with relatively low shear stress. The safety factor (strength/stress) decreases significantly with increasing environmental temperatures. The effects of compaction temperature, modulus, and thickness of overlay on the adhesive strengths and stresses were also examined.

Abstract:The quality of the waterproof adhesive layer significantly impacted the safety and service life of concrete bridge deck pavements. Therefore, this study focused on the preparation of the waterborne epoxy resin-polyurethane-emulsified asphalt (WEPEA) and investigated the factors influencing its road performance. The component proportions of WEPEA were determined based on tensile strength and elongation at break, while its physical and chemical properties were systematically studied. Indoor tests were conducted to investigate the impact of environmental factors and surface treatment processes on WEPEA's road performance. The research findings indicated that the optimal proportions for WEPEA were 30% waterborne epoxy resin (WER) and 8% waterborne polyurethane (WPU). WEPEA exhibited excellent bonding performance, low-temperature flexibility, adhesion, waterproof properties, and corrosion resistance. Surface contaminants, freeze-thaw cycles, and immersion in water reduced the road performance of WEPEA. Surface treatments such as surface brushing, surface grooving, and surface milling enhanced WEPEA's road performance, with surface grooving being the most effective method. According to value engineering theory, compared to other waterproof adhesive materials, WEPEA had better economic benefits as a waterproof adhesive material.

Abstract:This study investigates the mechanical response and road performance of waterproof adhesive layers on concrete bridge decks through numerical simulations and laboratory tests. A finite element model examined mechanical responses under various parameters. Composite samples made of waterborne epoxy–polyurethane asphalt (WEPA) were prepared and tested, analyzing factors like spray volume, curing time, shear angle, and shear rate through pull-out and shear tests. Shear fatigue characteristics of WEPA were also evaluated. Results show that maximum shear stress in the waterproof layer is positively correlated with pavement modulus, overload coefficient, vehicle driving state, deck slope, and interlayer contact, but negatively correlated with vehicle speed. The most unfavorable condition corresponds to a shear angle of 30.6°. Tests indicate that the optimal WEPA spray volume is 1.1 kg/m 2 with a curing time of approximately 24 hours. Shear strength increases with shear rate, optimal at 10 mm/min. Shear fatigue performance is significantly affected by temperature changes. These findings are important for enhancing the road performance of waterproof adhesive layers and extending the service life of concrete bridge deck pavements.

Abstract:Developing prefabricated bridge deck pavement systems can fundamentally avoid the drawbacks caused by traditional on-site construction such as poor continuity of the construction process and significant differences in pavement layer performance. Prefabricated bridge deck pavement requires that the bridge pavement is completed with the steel deck together in the factory indoors thus it needs the concrete has better self-leveling characteristics which is rare for existing pavement materials. This article develops the ultimate performance selflevelling epoxy asphalt concrete (USEA) which both have excellent self-leveling properties and comprehensive performance. The study initially established the self-leveling asphalt concrete rolling model based on asphalt film thickness theory and Hertz contact theory and the critical rolling mechanical calculation results states that the aggregate particles and the skeleton amounts are the key elements for fluidity of concrete. Comprehensive the analysis of rolling model and research on the curing reaction process of epoxy resin, the study raises the material configuration of USEA and determine the gradation by the Bailey's method. To guarantee the better pavement performance of USEA, the study designs the orthogonal test and establish the Entropy-TOPSIS model to optimize the details mortar schemes of concrete. Through the model calculation, the epoxy resin content and the SBS modified asphalt oil-stone ratio are determined as 20 % and 8.0 % respectively. In this scheme, the high temperature stability is 2805 times & sdot;mm-1, the low temperature bending strain is 3662 mu epsilon and the fatigue life can reach 1.200 million times. The study provides a material selection for the development of prefabricated bridge pavement system and the technical reference for the development of other self-leveling materials which has constructive practical significance.

Abstract:The use of rubber asphalt pavement as a bridge deck waterproofing adhesive layer material, the use of shear test and pull-out test analysis of the adhesive layer of rubber bitumen adhesive properties. The best rubber asphalt spraying volume has been tested, and the stress deformation of rubber asphalt waterproofing adhesive layer has been obtained. Studies have shown that rubber asphalt has good deformation ability, suitable for bridge deck waterproofing adhesive layer materials.

Abstract:In view of the shortcomings of the existing steel bridge deck waterproof adhesive layer (WAL), such as poor durability, high construction cost and long construction period, a new preparation method of waterproof coating with self-stratification effect is proposed. In this paper, poly butyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate–styrene block copolymer with lower glass transition temperature was synthesized by free radical solution polymerization, and 5 kinds of self-stratification coatings were obtained by mixing it with epoxy resin at different mass ratios. The glass transition temperature, thermal stability and chemical composition of acrylic resin were characterized by DSC, TGA, and FT-IR. The self-stratification behavior of the coatings was confirmed by FT-IR, SEM, and water contact angle test. The basic performance and road performance of above self-stratifying waterproof coatings were tested according to specific standards. The results show that these coatings exhibit excellent heat resistance, low temperature flexibility and mechanical properties, namely, average tensile strength can reach 6 MPa, the elongation at break can reach 108 %. Furthermore, the coatings also present extraordinary pull-out strength of 9.51 MPa and excellent water impermeability. Moreover, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the self-stratifying waterproof coatings after UV aging test decreased by 7.3 % and 5.2 %, respectively, indicating that above coating have excellent durability. Therefore, the performance of the coating prepared in this paper fully meets the requirements of the road and bridge waterproof coating standards. The optimum mixing ratio of acrylic resin and epoxy resin is recommended as 3:7 based on their performance. Finally, self-stratifying mechanism of coatings was proposed based on the surface energy theory, which provides theoretical support for the design and preparation of the steel bridge deck WAL.

Abstract:A large-scale shear test apparatus with the filling of 600 mm×600 mm×600 mm size is employed to carry out a series of pull-out tests, to investigate the interface behavior between the geogrid and compacted expansive soil. In the tests, the high density polythene (HDPE) uniaxial geogrid and the weathered expansive marlite in Xinxiang, the Middle Route of South to North Water Transfer Project (SNWT) are adopted. The results show that under the great vertical load, the geogrid deformation is great, the pull-out force approaches the peak value when the rigid motion occur more, the interface friction distributes nonuniformly, and the uniform degree varies with the pull-out force. While under the lower vertical load, the rigid motion of geogrid takes a great proportion to the total displacement, and the interface friction distributes uniformly basically. When the interface friction distributes nonuniformly, the average friction may decrease even under a greater vertical load. The peak strength of the interface can be attained with the relative displacement no more than 1 cm-2 cm. The strength curve of the interface can be described as a linear function.

Abstract:During the pull?out process there exist concrete crack initiation and propagation. To accurately simulate discontinuous deformation of the pull?out process and calculate pull?out capacity of shear connectors, a zero?thickness cohesive interface element based on the enhanced finite element method was introduced in this paper. And cohesive zone model ( CZM) was used to describe the crack initiation and propagation of the pull?out process. Then numerical simulation analysis of a pull?out test model was carried out. Results showed load?displacement curves of the structure, pull?out capacity, and crack propagation patterns of the concrete slab. Discontinuous deformation numerical simulation has been realized.
Experimental Study of Waterproof Membranes on Concrete Deck: Interface Adhesion under Influences of Critical Factors

Abstract:Waterproof membrane (WM) has been used as an interlayer between asphalt concrete (AC) overlay and concrete deck of bridges for the purpose of waterproof and interface adhesion. The interface adhesion of WM is affected by a myriad of complicated factors, and thus it is essential to study these influence factors in order to design more reliable materials and structures. Accordingly, this paper investigates the adhesion properties of WM under the influences of critical factors including construction temperature, structure characteristic, material content and use of subcoat. Three representative WM materials were studied: APP-modified-asphalt sheet, self-adhesive rubberized-asphalt sheet, and liquid polymer-modified-asphalt coat. Laboratory test programs of direct shear test, pull-off test and 90° peel test were designed to determine the interface adhesion strengths accounting for the influence factors. Results indicate that adhesion strength increases initially and then decreases with increasing WM material content and surface roughness of concrete deck. The compaction temperature of AC overlay and melting temperature of WM play important roles in forming the interface adhesion. Adding SBS-modified asphalt as a subcoat significantly improves adhesion strength. Material and structural designs considering these critical factors are also discussed.

Abstract:Concrete pouring layer surfaces are seriously affected by the environment when hydraulic concrete pours in dry, windy environments which affects the interlayer strength. The effect of the concrete interlayer surface is analyzed for various environmental conditions by measuring the interlayer splitting tensile strength and the water content of the first concrete layer. The results show that the interlayer strength is reduced by the environmental conditions with the interlayer strength related to the water content in the first layer. Therefore, the water content can be used to predict interlayer strength. A layer remodeling method is proposed to improve the interlayer strength based on the extreme situation of a water shortage on concrete surface of the first layer surface.

Abstract:The Hangzhou Bay Bridge located at the typical marine corrosion environment.Research on the durability of reinforced concrete acted as an important role to evaluate the durability of the bridge.To evaluate the durability of Hangzhou Bay Bridge,we built the concrete durability field exposure station of the bridge during the construction.We collected large amount of data for evaluating the durability of Hangzhou Bay Bridge.In this paper,we summarized the experience of construction and maintenance for the field exposure station,and introduced the application of information construction and management of the exposure test station to evaluate the durability of the bridge.

Abstract:To comprehensively investigate the integrated structural and material design of the epoxy asphalt mixture used in steel bridge deck pavement, the following works have been conducted: 1. The strain level of steel bridge deck pavement was calculated; 2. The ultimate strain level of fatigue endurance for epoxy asphalt concrete was measured; 3. The effect of water tightness of epoxy asphalt mixture on the bonding performance of steel plate interface was tested. 4. For better performance evaluation, quantitative analysis of the anti-skid performance of epoxy asphalt mixture was carried out by testing the structure depth using a laser texture tester. Results show the following findings: 1. The fatigue endurance limit strain level of epoxy asphalt mixture (600 με) was higher than that of the steel bridge deck pavement (<300 με), indicating that the use of epoxy asphalt concrete has better flexibility and can achieve a longer service life in theory; 2. The epoxy asphalt concrete has significant water tightness to protect the steel plate interface from corrosion and ensure good bonding performance; 3. The porosity of epoxy asphalt mixture used in steel bridge deck paving should be controlled within 3%; 4. In terms of anti-skid performance of bridge deck pavement, the FAC-10 graded epoxy asphalt mixture is recommended when compared with EA-10C.

Abstract:The damage properties of waterproof board in composite lining of tunnel with concrete matrix defects under water pressure were investigated with Ritz method in the large deflection plate theory to analyze the generation of water leaking in highway tunnels.The center deformation,stress and strain of waterproof board were formularized in rectangular and elliptic boundary conditions due to concrete matrix defects.The first strength theory was introduced to calculate the critical depth and the critical load of waterproof board.Analysis shows that the maximum principal stress appears at the middle of longer side in rectangular boundary conditions and at the center in elliptic boundary conditions.This work correlates the failure of waterproof board with the geometric size of concrete matrix defects and would support the choosing,designing and investigating of new construction technology of waterproof board.

Abstract:The performance of waterproof bonding layer directly effects the durability of the highway bridge. Water permeability, shear strength and tension strength are three main indicators evaluating the waterproof bonding layer. In this research, three waterproof bonding materials including SBS modified asphalt, SBR modified asphalt emulsion and second order reaction waterproof material were selected. The water permeability, shear strength and pull-off strength were tested. The effect of different temperature and different contents were analyzed. Results show that: the water permeability resistance of waterproof bonding layer ranked as follows: SBS modified asphalt>Second order reaction waterproof material>SBR modified asphalt emulsion. Compared to SBR modified asphalt emulsion and second order reaction waterproof material, SBS modified asphalt has a better shear resistance. Three waterproof materials used in this research all have temperature sensitivity. Their shear strength and tension strength decrease dramatically with temperature increasing.
