Abstract:Architectural and structural design work of roof system of Yueqing Olympic Center are roughly reviewed in the present paper.The stadium with lunar shape adopts a novel type of spatial cable-frames. System constitution of this stadium is different because of braced radial cables and open-mouth hoop cable. The gymnasium and swimming arena adopt a new latticed-shell-string system with non-vertical compression bars and spatial hoop cables.Structural design of steel works of Yueqing Olympic center is in accordance with mechanical rules and restrictions but not constrained by common concepts.It is a little challengeable in some aspects.The present paper aims at roughly review of some key design techniques of new types of large-span spatial structures.Emphasis is put on the process of architectural design and structural design when they do not coincided with each other at the preliminary design stage.

Abstract:Domes are common architectural elements in real life, with spherical or sphere-like shapes being the most common. Nonetheless, there has been limited research on incorporating modern design and manufacturing technologies into spherical domes, especially those made of bio-based materials. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the design pipeline for spherical domes. In terms of spherical tessellation for dome design, a set of innovative algorithms and programs is made available as open-source resources, comprising both manual and numerical approaches, where the numerical approaches are validated by existing results while also expanding these results, and new manual approaches are proposed and benchmarked as alternatives to conventional methods with similar or better performance, condition-wise. A proof-of-concept prototype is constructed according to the proposed pipeline to demonstrate its feasibility for later experiments. A preliminary loading test was conducted, validating its satisfactory mechanical behavior. In summary, a comprehensive design pipeline for spherical domes is proposed and validated through a prototype project, during which various innovations are made, from spherical tessellation to parametrical design, analysis, and digital twin manufacturing.

Abstract:This study aims to verify which the performance-based design was successfully applied in the construction of the main exhibition hall of the first Hebei Garden Expo, China. Based on the idea of “equality and connectivity” among humans, buildings, and the environment, the exhibition hall was designed using digital shape generation technology, and a special double-skin structure was selected. A bright exterior glass curtain wall separated from the cell-shaped reinforced concrete (RC) structure, not only made the exhibition hall fit into the scenery so well, but also presented an adhesion area with functional links to the RC structure. Joints of the steel tubular truss and the glass curtain wall were optimally designed by means of finite element simulations. During the service of more than a decade, extension of space, function of interactivity, and energy conservation required for a green infrastructure were achieved, highlighting the ecological connectivity of the exhibition hall with the surrounding landscape. The exhibition hall performed synergy of structure and architecture functions and it is still a landmark building in Shijiazhuang, showing an excellent application achievement of the performance-based design.

Abstract:The general situation,structure system and analysis results of the convention center of Shijiazhuang International Convention and Exhibition Center were introduced.According to the building layout and facade,combined with structural stress characteristics,the combined roof system of double folded plate space grid and single layer latticed shell was adopted.The calculation results of the roof structure were provided.Scheme comparison and component optimization for latticed shell were shown.The cantilever truss for grandstand of the lecture hall was also introduced.

Abstract:The concourse of Shijiazhuang International Convention and Exhibition Center is a large and complex structural system,which is about 800m long and 100m wide.The roof supporting system consists of two structural forms of tree and Y shape column,and folded plate space truss is used for roof.The choice of structure styles was introduced,the loads value and analytical results were given,and in-depth analysis on some key issues in structure design was carried out.Based on the elastic-plastic analysis,the seismic performance of the structure was fully studied,and the effective length factor of the columns and the node design were introduced.

Abstract:It introduces the exhibition industry in Germany and the distribution of its exhibition centers with focus on the four modes of exhibition facilities in terms of their place in the city. Then it summarizes the outwards connections of the exhibition facilities concerning city public transport, rail transport, road transport, air and water transport etc. Thirdly it compares the size and functions of the exhibition facilities and predicts the trend of them. After that, it stresses the ways of reconstruction and extension of the exhibition facilities. Finally it evaluates the surrounding sites, transportation planning and symbol design of the facilities.
