Abstract:The paper presents an outline of researches on ultrasonic motors in Nanjing university of aeronautics and astronautics (NUAA), and describes some progresses and achievements since research center of ultrasonic motors (RCUM) at NUAA was founded in 1997. The author introduces in detail some key techniques, which have been solved by RCUM during the researches on ultrasonic motors, and summarizes very good experiences in exploring the ultrasonic motor techniques. Finally, the author puts forward many projects, which are done at present and future developments of RUCM.

Abstract:The traveling-wave type ultrasonic motor(TWUSM) is driven by the friction force between the stator and the rotator.In this paper,it briefly states the characteristics of ultrasonic motor and the applications in the aerospcace field;Then represents the structure,friction material,adhesive technology,temperature characteristics,mechanical characteristics,transient characteristics of series of TWUSM.Finally,proposes a nerve unit self-adaptive PID control algorithm to realize the precisely speed and position control of TWUSM.It is shown from the research results that TWUSM has a good performance and suitably be applicated in some space structures,such as space robot,lunar vehicle,solar panel and CCD,and so on.The priority research works are presented according to the aerospace application demands of TWUSM.

Abstract:The ultrasonic motor existing today usually draws its high frequency-high voltage power supply from a low voltage DC source by using an inverter. In the paper, a new type of the power supply taking its input power directly from commercial AC source is proposed. According to the principle, by using Pulse Wideth Modulation, two driving signals with controllable phase difference for the motor are produced with only one power level circuit. In order to make the signals stable and meet the needs of driving the motor, some methods for producing control signals and compensating the phase of feedback network are introduced in detail. A prototype of a power supply based on above described principle is made, which takes its power from 220V AC commercial source and supplies 20W sinusoidal alterating currents of 300V to the 60-type ultrasonic motor developed in our center. The power supply works stably.

Abstract:A longitudinal-torsional hybrid-type ultrasonic motor has larger torque and lower revolution speed compared with other kinds of ultrasonic motors. It drives devices directly and precisely, so it is adaptable to many fields, especially aeronautics and astronautics, as a servo actuator. Due to the different sound propagation speeds of longitudinal and torsional vibrations in the stator, it is difficult to match resonant frequencies of longitudinal and torsional vibrations. In this paper, a new radial-torsional vibration hybrid-type ultrasonic motor is put forward, which utilizes longitudinal vibration derived from radial vibration by the Poisson effect. The short, hollow cylindrical structure easily makes resonant frequencies of first-order radial and torsional vibrations into degeneracy. First, the new structure of the motor is presented. Second, the principle of matching the resonant frequencies is developed, and the motor geometry is optimized by ANSYS software. Finally, a 60-mm diameter prototype is fabricated, which performs well. The no-load velocity and maximum torque are 25 r/min and 5 N.m, respectively. This kind of motor is small, light, and noiseless.

Abstract:An ultrasonic machining device for thin-wall cylinder was designed and manufactured in order to reduce the thermal and force deformations during machining the surface of thin-wall cylinder,and improve the dimension and shape precision.The device comprises of ultrasonic generator,ultrasonic energy converter,ultrasonic horn and ultrasonic machining tool.The ultrasonic generator transforms AC(220 V、50 Hz) to the electronic oscillator energy in ultrasonic frequency,which is transformed to the mechanical energy by the ultrasonic energy converter.The vibration amplitude of the ultrasonic energy converter is magnified and transferred to the ultrasonic machining tool by the ultrasonic horn.The mechanism tool machines the thin-wall cylinder.Analysis on the mechanism of machining the thin-wall cylinder shows that the ultrasonic machining can reduce the thermal deformation force deformations.The vibration mode analysis shows that the intrinsic frequency is much lower than the ultrasonic frequency.Finally,a thin-wall cylinder with a diameter of 90 mm was machined by ultrasonic machining.The test results showed that the dimension error and shape error were decreased during the ultrasonic machining.

Abstract:Taking TRUM-60 traveling wave rotary ultrasonic motors as a research object, a further application research in view of the characteristics of drive controller is made on drive and control techniques of ultrasonic motors, and some excellent dynamic characteristics of ultrasonic motors are made use of, . Some new progresses are obtained on control algorithm and control strategy, such as motors' restart with power on, arc-second scale resolution and nanoscale resolution while moving with open loop conditions, dynamic characteristic of rapid reciprocating and double PWM power drive topological structure.
