Abstract:This article reports a screw-driven polyhedron linear ultrasonic motor (USM) of nut-type. It is comprised of a stator, which is a threaded metal nut bonded with piezoelectric plates on its external surface, and a rotor with external threads, which engage with the internal threads of the stator. A traveling wave in the plane is stimulated on the stator when harmonic electric signals are applied to the piezoelectric plates. The traveling wave drives the rotor to rotate, and the threads transform the rotation into a linear motion. The lens can be fixed in the rotor and realize the integrated design of the auto focus system. This structure can omit retarder and directly drive to obtain a high accuracy of positioning, and it is shockproof. A mini AF cellular phone module (8.5 mm×8.5 mm×5.9 mm) driven by this motor was made and an image resolution of 3–5 MP was obtained in the module prototypes of the cellular phone.

Abstract:An autofocus system applied to microscope has been designed, which is based on the analysis of analog video signals' processing. A multi-feedback band-pass active filter retains high frequency components of analog video signals from CCD, then high frequency components that represent image details information are amplified and performed integral operation, which is defined as focusing measure. After A/D transformation a MCU controls the focusing procedure and drives a stepping motor to find focused-position. The selection of bandwidths of filter, selection of focusing windows, step-size in search and hill climbing algorithms are discussed and optimized to improve focus accuracy and shorten focus time.

Abstract:This paper introduces an integrated optical auto-focus system driven by a nut-type ultrasonic motor (USM). The system comprises an optical lens as a rotor (M6 or M7), a polyhedral tube of copper as a stator; an image sensor, and a driver IC of the motor. The sizes of the AF (auto-focus) module are 8.5 mm×8.5 mm×5.9 mm. The piezoelectric elements are bonded on the external surface of the stator. The rotor has external screw thread that engages with the inner screw thread of the stator. When the piezoelectric elements are excited by the driver IC, a bend traveling wave in plane is generated on the stator along the circle direction, that drives the lens rotor to rotate and then to move axially. The driver IC is controlled by an image feedback of an image sensor centered on the axis of the casing, then the optical focusing is realized. The power consumption is zero at rest and is less than 0.25 W in motion; focusing precision <10 μm; speed >3 r/s(180 r/min); response <10 ms; high reliability: resistant to shock and fall off; directly driven by the driver IC without transmission mechanism; the friction force is namely the driving force and noiseless. The integrated optical auto-focus system is very useful, especially for cellular phones. The image resolution of 3–5 MP has been obtained in the module prototypes of the cellular phone.

Abstract:Ultrasonic motors(USM) have the advantages of low speed,high torque,quick response,high resolution and anti-electromagnetic interference capability,which bring them broad application prospect in fields of robots,industrial instruments and security technologies.Multi-degree-of-freedom(MDOF) motor is one of the most cutting-edge aspects in the ultrasonic motor researches.Several typical MDOF ultrasonic motors of different types were introduced.The structure,working principle and characteristics were mainly discussed.Some typical examples were given and the key achievements were summarized,as well as their applications.The research and development trends were proposed.

Abstract:This paper presents a far-field enhanced-resolution underwater ultrasonic imaging on the basis of a single-slit structured planar focusing lens. The iterative angular spectrum approach was employed to optimize the planar focusing lens from a designated focal pattern, characterized by focal length and full width at half maxima. Numerical simulations and experimental investigations were conducted on different target objects. Compared to the conventional method, both results showed that the performance of far-field ultrasonic imaging was comprehensively enhanced with the proposed planar focusing lens, in terms of resolving capability, working distance, operational bandwidth, and robustness. The single-slit structured planar focusing lens is cost effective and easy to fabricate, which would greatly benefit ultrasonic imaging and drive new applications of ultrasound in various scenarios.

Abstract:Cylindrical ultrasonic motors can be widely used in many fields such as zoom and focus system of cameras, electric curtain and micro-driver of MEMS.This work concentrates on single-point and double-point contact modes between the stator and the rotor,which are proved by the theory and the experiment,then put forward a conception of the critical pre-pressure and the force transferring relation in two different contact modes mentioned above,moreover analyze the mechanical characteristics and the efficiency of the motors.Simulated results are confirmed by experimental ones.The proposed model is useful to analyze the relation between the motor characteristics and the pre-pressure. Finally theφ14 mm prototype was fabricated.Its maximum torque is 0.11 Nm,the no-load speed is about 300 r/min.

Abstract:The ultrasonic motor is used to drive the circular scanning of an optical coherence tomography (OCT) vascular endoscope. We have studied various kinds of ultrasonic motors, including: piezoelectric cylindrical ultrasonic motor, ultrasonic motor of piezoelectric cubic column type with truncated edges; piezoelectric tube ultrasonic motor with 1 mm outer diameter and 0.6 mm inner diameter, and the latest used ultrasonic tiny motor with ahollow metal square column (side length 0.6 mm) and piezoelectric plates composite. These motors are used to drive the OCT endoscopic probe respectively and the scanning images of different resolution of biological tissue are obtained. The highest axial resolution is 7 μm and the lateral resolution is 6.5 μm. The design and simulation of the ultrasonic motors, experimental methods and main performance are briefly introduced.

Abstract:Multi-motor configuration of multi-DOF (degree of freedom) optical system is a major source of redundant structure, putting a limitation on the simple and miniaturized design. Thus, a novel two-DOF ultrasonic motor (USM) is proposed to provide a feasible method of application in the lens autofocus of the optical system. The proposed USM operates by one longitudinal mode and two orthogonal bending modes, which is inspired by the bionic motion principle of the earthworms. The frequency degeneration among the three working modes is performed, and the working principle of the USM is verified via the FEM simulation. A prototype of the two-DOF USM is fabricated, and its mechanical output characteristics are tested. The experimental results indicate that the prototype achieves the maximum rotary and linear speeds of 3319.6 rpm and 57.6 mm/s, respectively. Furthermore, we demonstrate the result of a simple focusing experiment using the prototype and obtain a series of clear pictures, which verifies the feasibility of application in the optical focusing system.

Abstract:The traveling-wave type ultrasonic motor(TWUSM) is driven by the friction force between the stator and the rotator.In this paper,it briefly states the characteristics of ultrasonic motor and the applications in the aerospcace field;Then represents the structure,friction material,adhesive technology,temperature characteristics,mechanical characteristics,transient characteristics of series of TWUSM.Finally,proposes a nerve unit self-adaptive PID control algorithm to realize the precisely speed and position control of TWUSM.It is shown from the research results that TWUSM has a good performance and suitably be applicated in some space structures,such as space robot,lunar vehicle,solar panel and CCD,and so on.The priority research works are presented according to the aerospace application demands of TWUSM.

Abstract:Ultrasonic motor is difierent from traditi- onal electromagnetic motor and it is driven bv friction force.It is characterized by rapidly dynamic perfor- mance and high resolution.Based on its character,this paper introduces a precise position control metho- d.Firstly,the paper points out the essentials of high resolution and stepping characteristic of ultrasonic motor in theory and experiment.Next,based on this characteristic of the motor,the paper discusses high precise position control strategy named stepping- position control method and the factors that influence position precision are analyzed.By the stepping- position control method,high precise position control (0.010°) have been realized by the experimental hybrid transducer type ultrasonic motor,which demonstrates its potential for driving high precise mechanical system,such as MEMS.
