Abstract:Fluorescence emission difference microscopy (FED) has been proved to be an effective method to break the diffraction barrier which had restricted the spatial resolution of optical microscopy in the far-field for a long time. In this paper, we theoretically demonstrate that the attainable resolution of FED can be further enhanced by using beam modulation. By applying beam shape modulating, polarization state modulating, phase encoding and beam blocking to the illumination beams in the process of FED imaging, we optimize the size of the corresponding PSFs and thus improve the resolving ability of FED. The simulation tests demonstrate that in the optimal case after beam modulation, the resolution of FED can be enhanced by a factor of 26% compared with a conventional one.

Abstract:A novel fluorescence emission difference technique is proposed for further enhancements of the lateral resolution in surface plasmon-coupled emission microscopy (SPCEM). In the proposed method, the difference between the image with phase modulation by using a 0-2π vortex phase plate (VPP) along with a diaphragm and the original image obtained from SPCEM is used to estimate the spatial distribution of the analyzed sample. By optimizing the size of the diaphragm and the subtractive factor, the lateral resolution can be enhanced by about 20% and 33%, compared with that in SPCEM with a single 0-2π VPP and conventional wide-field fluorescence microscopy, respectively. Related simulation results are presented to verify the capability of the proposed method for improving lateral resolution and reducing imaging distortion. It is believed that the proposed method has potentials to improve the performance of SPCEM, thus facilitating biological observation and research.

Abstract:An imaging system combining parallel detection and two-photon excitation is presented in this paper. In the proposed method, seven avalanche photodiodes (APD) are used in the detection path. The light is guided onto the APD sensor by a fiber bundle with seven fibers. The circular arranged fiber end faces together function as a detection array. The outer contour fiber ends deviate from optical axis center and thus obtain higher frequency information. Seven images are acquired simultaneously by the detection array. By using deconvolution and pixel reassignment to process the images acquired, both the resolution and the contrast of the final image are enhanced. The capability of image quality enhancement of the system constructed is demonstrated successfully both by theoretical simulation and experimental results.

Abstract:In confocal microscopy, the effective optical transfer function (OTFeff) with Gaussian plane wave illumination covers very few high-frequency components, which prohibits further improvement of the resolution. We propose modulated pattern scanning microscopy (MPSM) to achieve super-resolution imaging. In MPSM, the phase of the illumination beam is modulated to reassign the OTFeff in the Fourier domain. The phase mask is designed using an optimization algorithm to obtain the fluorescence emission pattern with rich high-frequency components. Then, the postprocessing algorithms are adapted to retrieve the super-resolved images from the modulated recordings. Simulation and experiment demonstrate that MPSM increases the resolution approximately 1.3 times better than confocal microscopy. Compared with conventional deconvolution, MPSM exhibits a higher signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract:We show that the focal modulation microscopy (FMM), which combines a spatial phase modulator with confocal microscopy, results in an improvement in spatial resolution. This technique was introduced to increase imaging depth into tissue and rejection of background from a thick scattering object. A theory for image formation in FMM is presented, and the effects of detecting the in-phase modulated fluorescence signal are discussed. Compared with conventional confocal microscopy, the width of the point-spread function for the in-phase fluorescence signal is improved by 16.4%. When applied to saturable fluorescence, the half-width at half-maximum is improved by 33.6%, 50.0%, and 62.9%, at demodulation frequencies 2 omega, 4 omega, and 8 omega, respectively. Abstract:Focal modulation microscopy (FMM) has gained significant interest in biological imaging. However, the spatial resolution and penetration depth limit the imaging quality of FMM due to the strong scattering background. Here, we introduce FMM with a Tai Chi aperture (TCFMM) based on diffraction theory to improve the spatial resolution. The results show that the transverse resolution is improved by 61.60% and 41.37% in two orthogonal directions, and the axial resolution is improved by 29.67%, compared with confocal microscopy (CM). The signal background ratio (SBR) of TCFMM is increased by 23.26% compared with CM and remains nearly the same compared with FMM using D-shape apertures (DFMM). These improvements in spatial resolution and SBR indicate that TCFMM has potential in deep tissue imaging.

Abstract:Rotating modulation collimator (RMC) is an important imaging technique in hard X-ray astronomy. With traditional inversion techniques, the sensitivity, angular resolution and ability of simultaneous imaging of point sources and extended emission are not good Enough in many practical cases. In this work, a new inversion technique, the direct demodulation method, is applied to analyse simulated data of an RMC telescope. The results show that the image quality from direct demodulation are improved significantly in comparison with that from traditional inversion techniques, such as the cross-correlation method and the CLEAN cross-correlation method. From an RMC telescope with a simple bi-grid collimator and the direct demodulation technique, we can do imaging for both discrete and extended sources.

Abstract:High resolution reconstruction of complicated objects from incomplete and noisy data can be achieved by solving modulation equations iteratively under physical constraints. This direct demodulation method is a powerful technique for dealing with inverse problem in general case. Spectral and image restorations and computerized tomography are only particular cases of general demodulation. It is possible to reconstruct an object in higher dimensional space from observations by a simple lower dimensional instrument through direct demodulation. Our simulations show that wide field and high resolution images of space hard X-rays and soft gamma rays can be obtained by a collimated non-position-sensitive detector without coded aperture masks.

Abstract:Micro X-ray fluorescence analysis (micro-XRF) commonly has a lower spatial (lateral) resolution than other elemental mapping techniques like scanning electron microscopy. This disadvantage limits further applications of micro-XRF in microanalysis. In this study, the spatial resolution of micro-XRF was improved by oversampling and image restoration techniques, including both blind and non-blind methods. The point spread function (PSF) for the non-blind method was estimated efficiently by applying both the small point method and the knife-edge method. Three non-blind algorithms-the fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm, the Wiener filter, and the Richardson-Lucy (RL) method-were tested. The results showed that all these methods could improve the spatial resolution by as much as 26.5%. According to two image quality metrics-the mean squared error and the structural similarity index measure-the results of the RL method were better than those of the others. Compared to the non-blind method, the blind method called "blind deblurring with L0-regularized intensity and gradient prior" only yielded a 12.3% improvement of the resolution, but it obtained a more precise estimation of the size of the PSF. An oversized PSF helps to denoise, but it might reduce the resolution, and vice versa. When the correct PSF was used in the RL method, the improvement of the resolution was as high as 41.6%. A further application on rock samples showed that the technique helped to reduce the resolution variations caused by polychromatic X-rays. This study demonstrated that this technique is promising, but it is still necessary to accumulate more data and design more appropriate algorithms for micro-XRF images.

Abstract:In 1984 the EXOSAT observatory scanned the galactic plane with its medium-energy array which had a spatial resolution of about 0.75 degrees. The data analysis used at that time was unable to resolve some of the more complex regions near the galactic centre. The direct demodulation method is a technique to solve the image reconstruction problem in high energy astrophysics with a high sensitivity and spatial resolution. Using this method we have reanalyzed the data and obtained new images of the galactic plane X-ray emission. Three images of parts of this observation given in this paper show a number of point sources which were unresolved in the previous analysis.
Deep Learning-Based Super-Resolution and De-Noising for XMM-Newton Images

Abstract:The field of artificial intelligence based image enhancement has been rapidly evolving over the last few years and is able to produce impressive results on non-astronomical images. In this work we present the first application of Machine Learning based super-resolution (SR) and de-noising (DN) to enhance X-ray images from the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton telescope. Using XMM-Newton images in band [0.5, 2] keV from the European Photon Imaging Camera pn detector (EPIC-pn), we develop XMM-SuperRes and XMM-DeNoise deep learning-based models that can generate enhanced SR and DN images from real observations. The models are trained on realistic XMM-Newton simulations such that XMM-SuperRes will output images with two times smaller point-spread function and with improved noise characteristics. The XMM-DeNoise model is trained to produce images with 2.5x the input exposure time from 20 to 50 ks. When tested on real images, DN improves the image quality by 8.2%, as quantified by the global peak-signal-to-noise ratio. These enhanced images allow identification of features that are otherwise hard or impossible to perceive in the original or in filtered/smoothed images with traditional methods. We demonstrate the feasibility of using our deep learning models to enhance XMM-Newton X-ray images to increase their scientific value in a way that could benefit the legacy of the XMM-Newton archive.

Abstract:Spatial resolution enhancement in remote sensing data aims to augment the level of detail and accuracy in images captured by satellite sensors. We proposed a novel spatial resolution enhancement framework using the convolutional attention-based token mixer method. This approach leveraged spatial context and semantic information to improve the spatial resolution of images. This method used the multi-head convolutional attention block and sub-pixel convolution to extract spatial and spectral information and fused them using the same technique. The multi-head convolutional attention block can effectively utilize the local information of spatial and spectral dimensions. The method was tested on two kinds of data types, which were the visual-thermal dataset and the visual-hyperspectral dataset. Our method was also compared with the state-of-the-art methods, including traditional methods and deep learning methods. The experiment results showed that the method was effective and outperformed state-of-the-art methods in overall, spatial, and spectral accuracies.

Abstract:A γ spectra reconstruction algorithm was developed using the direct demodulation method to improve γ spectra analysis precision.The γ spectra measurement process was seen as the modulation of energy spectra from radioactive isotopes by γ-ray spectrometers.The modulation equation response matrix and the influence of background and noise were incorporated into the direct demodulation analysis of single and overlapped peaks in measured γ spectra.The results show that the method improves the energy resolution of cadmium zinc telluride γ spectra 56 times.The overlapped peaks,with peak intervals of one FWHM(full width at half maximum) and peak area ratio of 100∶1,can be separated entirely.The method is insensitive to noise,so it is especially useful for reconstructing γ spectra measured with cadmium zinc telluride detectors in the field which the spectra statistics are not optional.

Abstract:By inserting a modulator in the imaging system and scanning in different positions, ptychographic modulation imaging can achieve higher quality reconstruction for smooth or weakly scattered objects compared to conventional ptychography imaging. However, its imaging resolution is still limited by the pixel size of the detector. In this paper, divergent illumination is introduced to enhance imaging resolution. Compared with the original planar illumination scheme, our proposed method can achieve two-fold resolution improvement with only the use of thirty diffraction patterns for ten iterations. The quantitative phase imaging capability of the proposed method is also demonstrated by testing the binary phase sample. In the reconstruction, the divergent illumination geometry is converted to planar illumination model. The equivalent sampling intervals and diffraction distances of the modulator, object, and detector planes are analyzed in detail. In addition, a new high-accuracy distance calibration method for point light sources is proposed and verified in experiments.
