Abstract:The basic thinking of knowledge discovery in database is to take out the valuable information from database. The aim of knowledge discovery in database is to help decision-maker search for the potential relevancy in data, and find out the uncared-for essential. This information is probably very helpful for forecasting trend and decision-making. Time serial data mining is one of the important branches in knowledge discovery in database. Trend analysis and similitude search are the main techniques and methods in time serial data mining. More reasonable long-term or short-term forecasting is to be made from trend analysis and the trend analysis provides the effective foundation for science decision; Fuzzy matching technology which accord with the thinking characteristic of human brain is adopted in similitude search, so the similitude search is more reasonable and more effective.

Abstract:Ambiguous and multifaceted queries widely exist in academic and commercial search engines. Identifying the popular subtopics of queries is an important issue for search engines. In this paper, we propose a novel method to discover the popular subtopics for a given query. Our method first constructs a search behavior tripartite graph based on the search log data. Then, we utilize a subtractive initialized Non-negative Sparse LSA model to mine subtopics from the tripartite graph. The experimental results on two real-world Chinese search logs (i.e., the CADAL search log and the Sogou search log) show that our proposed method can significantly outperform the other comparison methods in term of MAP, alpha-nDCG and S-recall. We also applied our method into the CADAL digital library to provide a novel faceted book search service which can reduce the users' efforts in finding books.

Abstract:This paper summarizes the merits and flaws of the traditional approaches to topic-specific web resource discovery, which include page content-based approach, page link-based approach and the approach of using reinforcement learning. In addition, the paper introduces a method of using a dictionary to build Ontology, which can reduce much time of users. On this basis, an Ontology-based approach to topic-specific web resource discovery is put forward, which shows great advantages through experiments.

Abstract:The novelty of knowledge claims in a research paper can be considered an evaluation criterion for papers to supplement citations. To provide a foundation for research evaluation from the perspective of innovativeness, we propose an automatic approach for extracting innovative ideas from the abstracts of technology and engineering papers. The approach extracts N-grams as candidates based on part-of-speech tagging and determines whether they are novel by checking the Scopus® database to determine whether they had ever been presented previously. Moreover, we discussed the distributions of innovative ideas in different abstract structures. To improve the performance by excluding noisy N-grams, a list of stop-words and a list of research description characteristics were developed. We selected abstracts of articles published from 2011 to 2017 with the topic of semantic analysis as the experimental texts. Excluding noisy N-grams, considering the distribution of innovative ideas in abstracts, and suitably combining N-grams can effectively improve the performance of automatic innovative idea extraction. Unlike co-word and co-citation analysis, innovative-idea extraction aims to identify the differences in a paper from all previously published papers.

Some difficulties in the theoretic analysis and application are involved.From a practicality angle, using support vector machine to select features is considered as the research direction in machine learning.

Abstract:The information science research community is characterized by a paradigm split, with a system-centered cluster working on information retrieval (IR) algorithms and a user-centered cluster working on user behavior. The two clusters rarely leverage each other's insight and strength. One major suggestion from user-centered studies is to treat the relevance judgment of documents as a subjective, multidimensional, and dynamic concept rather than treating it as objective and based on topicality only. This study explores the possibility to enhance users' topicality-based relevance judgment with subjective novelty judgment in interactive IR. A set of systems is developed which differs in the way the novelty judgment is incorporated. In particular, this study compares systems which assume that users' novelty judgment is directed to a certain subtopic area and those which assume that users' novelty judgment is undirected. This study also compares systems which assume that users judge a document based on topicality first and then novelty in a stepwise, noncompensatory fashion and those which assume that users consider topicality and novelty simultaneously and as compensatory to each other. The user study shows that systems assuming directed novelty in general have higher relevance precision, but systems assuming a stepwise judgment process and systems assuming a compensatory judgment process are not significantly different. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:This paper describes a method for generating a set of keywords for a file,which is supposed to have strong similarity with the set of queries that a user most probably uses to search for the file. The generating procedure is presented and the algorithm is described in detail. Experiment is conducted to show the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:Research subjects are indicative of problem areas amongst which knowledge traffic occurs and networks form in a scientific community. This article presents a social network analysis of tourism dissertation subjects based on ProQuest Dissertations and Theses-Full Text database (1994-2008). The study suggests an openness and vibrancy of tourism as a domain of knowledge from a social network perspective. Longitudinal examinations revealed a structural change in its knowledge development. Twenty-one subjects were identified as subdomains in this dynamic and interconnected knowledge system. The article also discusses the relationships between subject areas and doctoral program distributions for tourism research at North American institutions. Results of the study contribute to discussions on scientific community and knowledge networks in interdisciplinary tourism studies.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the master and doctoral dissertations on "data-driven control", "model-free adaptive control" and "iterative learning control" collected by Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database before October 31, 2019. Exploiting big data technology, three topics mentioned above are studied in the form of mapping knowledge graph by Python, ROSTCM and Ucinet social network analysis software. Our research mainly explores and analyzes the temporal evolution as well as development status of the subject words, the cultivation organizations, the fund support, the co-occurrence of key words, the co-occurrence of dissertations topics and the characteristics of supervisor -student relationship, etc., which can provide references for relevant research fields.

Abstract:The key to extractive summarization lies in the determination of the importance of sentences,This paper proposes a method to model the relations between a sentence and its topics,and evaluates the topical importance of the sentence.To deal with the lack of golden references,the paper proposes a semi-supervised training framework based on learning-to-rank,which is able to exploit the unlabeled news documents.The experiments on DUC2004 multi-document summarization data verify that the proposed feature of topical importance is an effective supplement to heuristic features and can improve the quality of summaries.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to analyze the distribution of novelty among scholarly papers in the field of library and information science (LIS) in China. Specifically, this study explores the distribution of novelty of papers in various journals, research topics and different periods. It is possible to understand the characteristics of LIS research in China and what factors have influenced it. Design/methodology/approach This paper collects articles published in Chinese library science journals indexed by the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index from 2000 to 2022. The BERTopic model is used based on abstracts of the papers and to obtain the topic of each paper. Based on the combination innovation theory of reference pairs cited by focal papers, novelty scores of all papers are calculated. Next, this paper analyzes the novelty of papers under different topics. Finally, this paper analyzes the differences in author collaboration patterns across various topics, aiming to explain how these differences relate to the novelty of papers from a collaborative perspective. Findings This study shows that archival research topics have lower novelty than papers on journal evaluation and patent technology in Chinese LIS. Research papers in this field are gradually becoming more novel over time. Papers on different topics and with varying degrees of novelty exhibit distinct author collaboration patterns, with low-novelty topics more frequently featuring solo authorship, while high-novelty topics tend to involve a higher percentage of inter-institutional collaboration. Originality/value This study investigates the novelty characteristics of research papers on different topics in the field of LIS in China. The authors' contribution includes visualizing research hotspots and trends in the field and analyzing authors' collaboration patterns at the level of research topics, thereby providing new perspectives on the factors affecting the novelty of these papers.

Abstract:A novel topic-oriented text retrieval approach is proposed in this paper. In this approach,data mining techniques are used to extract multi-level semantic features from texts, generating multi-precision representation on text. Features extracted from text include both single word features and multi-word features. With this approach, more significant feature in text can be discovered and used. Extracted features are closed to the essence of texts. Experiments show that multi-level features can be used to create a topic-oriented text retrieval system.
