Abstract:A pilot-scale research of ozone-biological activated carbon process(O_3-BAC) was conducted for advanced treatment of polluted raw water of Huangpu River.The results show that the optimal ozone is 3 mg/L and EBCT is 15 min.Several valuable results are suggested for project design.

Comparison of O3 - BAC Combination and Conventional Processes on Removal of Pollutants for Treating Drinking Water

Abstract:The treatment effect of the combination process (pre-ozonation→high-density clarifier→sand filter→post ozonation→biological activated carbon(BAC) filter) was much better than that of the conventional process in treating the Huangpu River water, which is especially suit to high organic material and NH4 +-N in water. The removal efficiencies of CODMn and NH4 +-N by the post ozonation-BAC process were up to 30.4% and 18.9% respectively. And as the pre-ozonation process played a better role than pre-chlorination process in aid-coagulation, the removal efficiencies of CODMn and NH4 +-N were up to 29.6% and 81% respectively in traditional part of combination process. However, the removal efficiencies of CODMn and NH4 +-N were only 22.3% and 61.5% in the conventional process. In addition, the concentrations of algae toxins, trihalomethanes, bromate, molecular weight distribution and the related parameters of the BAC effluent were also investigated. The results show that the organic material with low molecular weight can be more easily removed by the post ozonationBAC processes (removal efficiency of organic material with molecular weight less than 1 kD is more than 70%). Tihalomethanes formation potential is 41% less than that of the conventional process. Besides, the microcystin and bromate concentrations are lower than drinking water standards in China. Moreover, the free chlorine disinfection can be used because the NH4 +-N can be mostly removed by the combination process, which can avoid the generation of nitrosamine as well as the odor and test problem by chloramine disinfection. However, the combination process also has some disadvantages such as the growth of algae on the purification structures during high-temperature season as the reaction time of ozone is relatively short. This problem may be solved by the combinated pre-ozonation and pre-chlorination process.
Unraveling Dissolved Organic Matter in Drinking Water Through Integrated Ozonation/ceramic Membrane and Biological Activated Carbon Process Using FT-ICR MS.

Abstract:The performance of an integrated process comprising coagulation, ozonation, and catalytic ceramic membrane filtration (CMF) followed by treatment with biological active carbon (BAC) was evaluated in a pilot-scale (96 m(3)/d) experiment to understand the biostability and quality of the finished water. The fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) at the molecular level was explored using Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Biostable finished water with an assimilable organic carbon (AOC) concentration of 30.2-45.4 mu g/L was obtained by the integrated process, and the high hydraulic retention time (HRT) (>= 45 min) of the BAC filter was necessary to provide biostable finished water. The coagulation/O-3/CMF unit efficiently transformed nitrogen-containing polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) with aromaticity and large molecular weight (Mw) (500-1000 Da) into CHO-type highly unsaturated phenolic compounds (HuPh) with less aromaticity and medium Mw (300-500 Da), which were effectively removed by subsequent BAC filtering. The main reaction was oxygen addition, followed by deamination and dealkylation of the coagulation/O-3/CMF unit and decarboxylation of the BAC filter. Principal component analysis revealed that N-containing and large-Mw PAH are potential AOC precursors, and the chemical characteristics of CHO-type and medium-Mw HuPh make them AOC candidates (correlation coefficients > 0.96). This study provides insights into the management of drinking water biostability and its suitability for the practical application of the integrated coagulation/O-3/CMF-BAC process in drinking water treatment plants.
ADVANCED TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES OF PAPER MILL WASTEWATER BY OZONE-BIOLOGICAL AERATED FILTER PROCESS

Abstract:The performance of O3-BAF process was studied for advanced treatment of paper mill secondary effluent. Results show that preozonation could destroy the molecular structure of refractory organic pollutants, and substantially increase the biodegradability of wastewater, where B/C ratio was increased from 0.21 to 0.45. Pollutants could be deeply removed by O3-BAF process, COD and turbidity were removed through the multiple activities of both ozone unit and BAF unit, NH3-N was mainly removed through biological nitrification activity of BAF unit, while UV254and colority were degraded mainly through the effect of ozone unit. After advanced treatment, the effluent could meet the newly issued discharge standard of water pollutants for pulp and paper industry.
Effects and Mechanisms of Ozone/Biological Activated Carbon Process for Advanced Treatment of Industrial Park Wastewater

Abstract:A pilot-scale hybrid process of ozone/biological activated carbon(O3/BAC) with a capacity of 36 m3/d was applied for advanced treatment of secondary biological effluent from a dyeing and tannery park wastewater treatment plant.The pollutant removal performance was investigated at different ozone dosages,and the removal mechanism was discussed.The results showed that the optimal removal efficiencies of COD,color,TOC and UV254 were reached using ozone dosage of 25 mg/L,with the removal rates of 17.4%,54.3%,14.7% and 47.5%,respectively.During biofilm growth period,COD removal rate first decreased,then increased and finally stabilized at 50% after 32 d.When the BAC filter reached a stable period,the average COD and color were decreased from 100 mg/L and 112.5 times in the influent to 50 mg/L and 5 times in the effluent,and the wastewater quality met the first level B criteria specified in Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant(GB 18918-2002).The micromolecular organics degraded from macromolecular organics by ozone were absorbed and oxidized by BAC,meanwhile,some extracellular polymeric substances and metabolites were produced.The proportions of TOC and UV254 were increased from 60.7% and 58.8% in the influent to 66.8% and 65.7% in the effluent at the molecular weight of less than 1 ku.

Abstract:The O3/BAC process was applied in the pilot-scale advanced treatment of Miyun Re-(servoir) water.The experimental results show that the treatment efficiency of O3/BAC is better than that of GAC alone.When the optimal ozone dosage is 2.0 mg/L,the removal efficiencies of COD(Mn),UV(254) and BDOC by O3/BAC are 9.9%,30.5% and 12.9% respectively higher than those by GAC alone.Meanwhile,the structural feature of activated carbon has a great effect on biodegradation.The removal efficiency of BDOC by crushed carbon is significantly better than that of cylindrical carbon.
Water Quality Safety of Ozonation and Biologically Activated Carbon Process in Application

Abstract:Ozonation and biologically activated carbon process, one of advanced treatment technologies, has been applied in many places at home and abroad. However, some emerging water quality problems appeared in operation. Drinking water treatment plant (6 x 10(5) m3/d) with ozonation and biologically activated carbon process (O3-BAC process) was investigated systematically, including microbial safety, the excessive growth of aquatic microorganism and chemical stability of water quality. And some experiments were done in the pilot plant (10 m3/h) at the same time. O3-BAC process is reliable in microbial safety, but operation management should be enhanced. A good number of aquatic microorganisms grow immoderately during operation of O3-BAC process, which is more serious especially in place with high temperature and humidity. With prolong of runtime, the growth of aquatic microorganisms varies regularly. That is hazardous to water quality safety. When raw water is low with alkalinity, decrease of pH in O3-BAC process is obvious. That will seriously affect on chemical stability.
Pilot study on reclaimed wastewater treatment by O_3—granul aractivated carbon—denitrification biofilter process

Abstract:A 200 m3/d pilot-scale project has been established to produce reclaimed water in Jiu Xianqiao Wastewater Treatment Plant.A technique using ozone,granular activated carbon(GAC),and denitrification biofilter(DNBF)is added to treat the denitrogenated and dephosphorized wastewater.Data collected in a period of 13 months indicate that the process not only removes the color and odor in wastewater in ozone reaction tower,but also increases the biodiversity and activities of biomass in the GAC tank due to the ozonation treatment.The CODCr values of effluent maintain less than 30 mg/L,while NH3-N less than 1 mg/L stably.The TN values of the effluent are below 2 mg/L under the treatment of DNBF process.Meanwhile,it is found that the correct collocation of DNBF and ozone cells is significant,which is different from that of the secondary treatment process.

Abstract:China has just implemented new drinking water quality standards, canceling the provisions detailed in the previous standards that allowed relatively lenient water quality standards in rural areas, and unifying the water quality requirements for urban and rural areas. In rural areas of China, lakes are important sources of drinking water, but their water typically contain high concentrations of organic pollutants. In addition, removal odorous substances from such sources is challenging. In response to these issues, an ozone-biological activated carbon-ultrafiltration process is proposed and its efficiency in drinking water treatment is explored. The results indicate that O 3 -BAC pretreatment significantly improved the efficiency of the membrane process in removing organic and odor substances. At an ozone dosage of 2 mg/L, with granular activated carbon as filler and an EBCT of 25 min, the O 3 -BAC pretreatment allowed removal rates in the membrane system equal to 71.5% of COD Mn , 84.2% of UV 254 , as well as 92.2% and 92.5% of GSM and 2-MIB, respectively, the latter being typical odor compounds. In addition, the function and diversity of the microbial communities in the reactor were evaluated under different pretreatment conditions at different stages: functionally specific microorganisms were enriched in different systems, and some microorganisms contributing to the removal of organic and odorous substances were identified. The effluent from the combined Ozone-BAC-UF process consistently met the new requirements for drinking water in China, implying that the combined system has significant potential for practical applications for drinking water treatment in rural areas.

Abstract:A pilot-scale hybrid process of ozone and biological aerated filters( BAF) with the capacity of 36 ~ 120 t / d was applied for advanced treatment of the secondary biologically effluent from a dyeing and tannery park wastewater treatment plant. Ozone pretreatment was optimized,then the effect of pollutants removal perform-ance with ozone and different medias BAF was investigated. The results showed that the best treatment efficiency and economical conditions were ozone dosage of 25 mg / L,three dosing points of 6 ∶ 3 ∶ 1 and contact time of 42 min; the effluent COD and color of ozone-biological activated carbon( O 3-BAC) were stabled at 50 mg / L and 5 times under the best conditions. The effluent met the first level B criteria specified in the Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant( GB18918-2002). The effluent of ozone-composite BAF just met the first level B criteria specified,but neither COD nor color in the effluent of ozone-ceramist BAF can meet the first level B criteria specified.

Abstract:Ozone-biological activated carbon (O-BAC) was studied for the advanced removal of organics from micro-polluted source water in the water supply plant P located in J City in the Yangtze Delta Region. The results show that 19.2% of the permanganate index, 10.4% of total organic carbon, and 23.0% of UV were removed by the advanced treatment of O-BAC. Eight types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), 16 types of organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs), and five types of haloacetic acids (HAAs) were detected in the source water. The total concentrations were 53.9-100.0, 6.5-41.8, and 2.5×10-1.1×10 ng·L, respectively. The advanced O-BAC treatment removed 32.5% of PAHs and 25.9% of OCPs, greatly improving the effluent of the conventional water supply process. However, HAAs were mainly removed with the conventional process, with a removal rate of 33.8%-87.0%. After the advanced treatment with O-BAC, the amount of chloroacetic acid slightly decreased, while the concentration of bromoacetic acid slightly increased.

Abstract:As a green advanced process for drinking water treatment, the UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) process has been gradually applied in China. To study the effect and mechanism of organic matter removal and the development of microbial communities in the UV/H2O2-biological activated carbon (UV/H2O2-BAC) process, a pilot-scale UV/H2O2-BAC system was built and operated over one year. Low water temperature affects the UV/H2O2 process efficiency, the biofilms in the BAC system were mature and stable after 240 days, and the contribution rate of BAC adsorption to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal was approximately 14.2% after one year of operation. The liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection (LC-OCD) analysis shows that UV/H2O2 process can increase the amounts of Low Molecular Weight (LMW) neutrals, and the specific UV absorbance (SUVA254) value is not suitable for predicting Trihalomethanes (THMs) precursor contents in water after UV/H2O2 treatment. High-throughput sequencing results prove that microbial species in the middle section are the most abundant compared to those in the influent and effluent sections, hydrogen peroxide has lower inhibition on the development of microbial community than ozone and the low concentration of hydrogen peroxide (<0.25 mg/L) promotes the development of the microbial communities, hydrogen peroxide can reduce Proteobacteria abundance by inhibiting the growth of anaerobes. Acidobacteria may have a certain contribution to the degradation of soil organic matter (SOM), and the effluent section of BAC with low DOC concentration cannot form the dominant species of Rhodobacter.

Abstract:An integrated process including coagulation, ozonation, ceramic membrane ultra-filtration and activated carbon filtration was investigated for the treatment of drinking water from the micro-polluted surface water in the southern China. A pilot-scale plant with the capacity of 120m3/d was set up and operated. Submerged flat-sheet ceramic membranes were selected with the average pore diameter of 60nm and the filtration area of 50m2. Quite a number of water quality parameters were evaluated including turbidity, particle counts, coliform bacteria, Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ammonia, geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), 4 trihalomethanes, 6 haloacetic acids, 8 endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and 14 pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs). The experimental results showed that the removal efficiencies of all the evaluated parameters ranged from 64% to 100%. The ozonation in membrane tank is very helpful both in enhancing the performance of removing multiple contaminants and in controlling the membrane fouling with ozone dosage of 2–5mg/L at the permeate flux of 100L/m2·h. The innovation of the integrated process was discussed based on the concept of nano-reactor to probe into the reaction activities inside the membrane pores. However, the detailed mechanisms need to be explored in the future.
Application Progress of O3/UV Advanced Oxidation Technology in the Treatment of Organic Pollutants in Water

Abstract:Organic pollution is a significant challenge in environmental protection, especially the discharge of refractory organic pollutants in chemical production and domestic use. The biological treatment method of traditional sewage treatment plants cannot degrade such pollutants, which leads to the continuous transfer of these pollutants into the water environment. Therefore, it is necessary to study clean and efficient advanced treatment technologies to degrade organic pollutants. The ozone/UV advanced oxidation process (O3/UV) has attracted extensive attention. This paper summarizes the reaction mechanism of O3/UV and analyzes its application progress in industrial wastewater, trace polluted organic matter and drinking water. The existing research results show that this technology has an excellent performance in the degradation of organic pollutants and has the characteristics of clean and environmental protection. In addition, the control of bromate formation and its economy is evaluated, and its operating characteristics and current application scope are summarized, which has a practical reference value for the follow-up in-depth study of the O3/UV process.

Abstract:A drinking water advanced treatment system utilizing combined processes of ozone-BAC and membrane is used in a water treatment plant of Yancheng City.The results indicate that the conventional index (turbidity,ammonia nitrogen,CODMn) of effluent are reduced to 0.05 NTU,0.03 mg/L and 0.65 mg/L respectively after ozone-BAC + ultrafiltration + nanofiltration membrane treatment process.And the removal rates are up to 99.7％,94.8％ and 88.3％ compared to conventional treatment.Anionic F-,Br-and SO42-are not detected,Cl-and NO3-fall to 12.6 mg/L and 1.5 mg/L,respectively.However,conventional + ozone-BAC + ultrafiltration may not remove anions in water effectively.The disinfection shows that disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the effluent of each process (conventional process,ozone-BAC,ultrafiltration and nanofiltration) decrease,and after nanofiltration membrane treatment,THMs and HAAs are only 2.0 μg/L and 50.8 μg/L,respectively.It indicates that combined process can effectively reduce the DBPs content of disinfection effluent to ensure the safety of drinking water quality.Finally,this paper compares the characteristics of each process with the operation and construction cost,and provides references for the upgrading of other water treatment plants.
Influence of ozone/ceramic membrane on performance and microbial community in biological activated carbon filtration

Abstract:Micro-polluted raw water was treated using a pilot plant with a scale of 120m3/d. The performance of ozone/ceramic membrane-biological activated carbon (BAC) process was studied. The diversity and detailed structure of microbial community of the microorganisms in BAC were also investigated. The hybrid process removed organic matter and ammonia effectively. The aeration with ozone-containing gas increased the dissolved oxygen in water flow and improved the removal of ammonia. The total removal efficiencies of ammonia and CODMn were 90% and 84%, respectively. The BAC played an important role in the final removals of pollutants. The microorganisms in the BAC bed were divided into 36phyla. Compared with the conventional BAC process, ozone/ceramic membrane in the hybrid process decreased the diversity and evenness of the microorganisms in the BAC. There were abundant Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira in the BAC in the hybrid process, which probably strengthen the ammonia removal. Moreover, the pathogenic bacteria and opportunistic pathogen were significantly inhibited by ozone/ceramic membrane, resulting in the decrease of their relative abundances in the following BAC. Therefore the biological safety of drinking water was enhanced significantly.
Research on the Pilot Scale Experiment of Tail Water from a Wastewater Treatment Plant Treated by Constructed Wetlands

Abstract:The w ater from a wastew ater treatment plant in T ianjin st ill contains a large number of N and P as w el as macromole-cules w hich are hard to be degraded. The constructed w etland system is used to perform advanced treatment on the water from the w astew ater treat ment plant so that it can meet the standard of urban landscape water use. A pilot experiment is used to sim-ulat e the removal efficiency of the const ructed wetland system on different kinds of pollutants. The results showed that ( 1) the wetland system of the inoculated microorganisms has a high removal efficiency of 84. 7% on the suspended solids of tail w at er;( 2) removal of suspended solids has a great correlat ion to matrix adsorpt ion and physical precipitat ion; ( 3) the w etland syst em of the inoculated microorganisms has a good removal efficiency of 44. 8% on COD of tail water, and the addition of funct ional microbes can improve the removal abilit y on COD; ( 4) the w etland system of the inoculated m icroorganisms does not have a good removal efficiency on ammonia nitrogen and t otal nitrogen, which is about 12. 3% and 35. 5% respectively; ( 5) the addition of dissolved oxygen can contribute to the removal of ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen; and ( 6) the w et land system of the in-oculated microorganisms has a removal efficiency of 52. 3% on total phosphorus, main relying on the matrix adsorption and physical precipitation.
Pilot Study on Advanced Treatment of Wastewater Produced by Pressurized Coarse Coal Gasification

Abstract:A Pilot study on advanced treatment of wastewater produced by pressurized coarse coal gasification was done in a coal chemical plant. The feasibility of catalytic ozonation, UV/O-3, and Fenton process in the advanced treatment of wastewater produced by pressurized coarse coal gasification process was studied and catalytic ozonation was proved to be a good choice with high COD removal (55%). Furthermore, a two-stage advanced treatment process combined with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and biological aerated filter (BAF) was proposed to meet the requirement of ultrafiltration-reverse osmosis (UF-RO) wastewater reuse system. It was found that catalytic ozonation showed the advantage in the first stage oxidation while UV/O-3 process showed the advantage in the second stage oxidation. Ultimately, we developed the interesting catalytic ozonation-BAF-UV/O-3-BAF process and the effluent met the UF-RO requirement of COD<50 mg/L, which opened a new and efficient channel for pressurized coarse coal gasification wastewater treatment.
Ac/O-3-Bac Processes for Removing Refractory and Hazardous Pollutants in Raw Water

Abstract:Granular activated carbon (AC)/O(3)-biological activated carbon (BAC) process was employed to treat raw water and compared to O(3)-BAC process in its optimum parameters (3 mg/L ozone dosage with 15 min oxidation time and 15 min empty bed contact time in BAC). The results showed that the presence of AC improved ozone utilization and biodegradability of the effluent. For dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal, AC/O(3)-BAC was more efficient than O(3)-BAC and its synergetic effect could be noticed. It was showed that small molecules with molecular weight (MW)<3 kDa predominated in the raw water accounting for more than 56% DOC, and their amount increased after oxidation, accounting for more than 64% DOC. Except for organic pollutants with MW>10 kDa, those of other MW range were decomposed better by AC/O(3) process than by O(3) process alone. GC/MS analysis showed that AC/O(3)-BAC process was effective in removing phthalate esters (PAEs) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). PAEs' removal ratio reached more than 93% and reduced with the increase of the length of the alkyl side chains and the alkyl branch chains. POPs-polybromobiphenyls' removal reached more than 94% except for 2,2',4,5',6-pentabromophenyl and decreased with the substitutional bromines increase except for 2,2',5,5'-tetrabromobiphenyl, which could be completely removed.

Abstract:This research investigated the fate of organic pollutants in each unit of a full-scale O-3-BAC (biological activated carbon) drinking water treatment plant with micro-polluted raw water under different temperatures. Total organic matters were largely removed with low DBPs (disinfection by-products) formed. Large molecules were broken into smaller ones by O-3 and middle-sized ones totally removed. Concentration of polysaccharide decreased except under high temperature. Small molecule contaminant species of refractory industrial additives, hydrocarbons, aromatics, herbicides, possible DBPs, etc., were detected. Some species passed through treatment process, some were removed and also new species formed.

Abstract:Micropolluted raw water was treated by pre-O3+ conventional treatment +O3/BAC purification process, which can achieve the desired result.When the respective premises of CODMn, UV254,turbidity and NH3-N in raw water were 4.4～5.9 mg·L-1,0.13～0.17cm-1, 7.9～13.5NTU and 0.07～0.84 mg·L-1, the respective removal rates of CODMn, UV254, turbidity and NH3-N by purification process were 50%,65.6%,96.8%,100%.After the purification process, the CODMn 2.0～2.6 mg·L-1,UV254 0.048 cm-1, turbidity<0.3NTU, NH3-N<0.01 mg·L-1 were reach the Standards for Drinking Water Quality(GB5749-2006) completely.
