Abstract:Superalloys are used under challenging thermal and mechanical conditions. For their thermo-mechanical characterization, advanced experimental methods are employed. They serve two purposes: the design of materials and the investigation of in-service conditions. Material designers or metallurgists focus on the dependence of mechanical properties on temperature, strain rate, microstructural features, and chemical composition. Materials are considered either as homogeneous and are, therefore, regarded as representative volumes or as heterogeneous with local property variations due to microstructure or chemical deviations. However, for a safe design of components, reliable information on materials' performance under realistic conditions is required. Experimental results can be used to develop constitutive models that can be used to predict in-service mechanical responses and lifetime of components. This chapter aims at providing an overview of advanced testing and characterization methods applied, or specifically developed, for evaluating the mechanical properties of superalloys in relevant thermo-mechanical conditions.
