Abstract:The minimal ranks of the product of generalized inverses of matrices are studied by using matrix rank methods in this paper.By proofing formula of containing g-inverse B（1,3） or g-inverse A（1,4） some interesting results are given.

Abstract:This paper discusses conditions under which the solution of linear system with minimal Schatten- p norm, 0 < p ⩽ 1, is also the lowest-rank solution of this linear system. To study this problem, an important tool is the restricted isometry constant (RIC). Some papers provided the upper bounds of RIC to guarantee that the nuclear-norm minimization stably recovers a low-rank matrix. For example, Fazel improved the upper bounds to δ 4 r A < 0.558 and δ 3 r A < 0.4721, respectively. Recently, the upper bounds of RIC can be improved to δ 2 r A < 0.307. In fact, by using some methods, the upper bounds of RIC can be improved to δ 2 r A < 0.4931 and δ 2 r A < 0.309. In this paper, we focus on the lower bounds of RIC, we show that there exists linear maps A with δ 2 r A > 1/√2 or δ r A > 1/3 for which nuclear norm recovery fail on some matrix with rank at most r . These results indicate that there is only a little limited room for improving the upper bounds for δ 2 r A and δ r A . Furthermore, we also discuss the upper bound of restricted isometry constant associated with linear maps A for Schatten p (0 < p < 1) quasi norm minimization problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we give some basic properties for the left (right) inverse, rank and product of tensors. The existence of order 2 left (right) inverses of tensors is characterized. We obtain some equalities and inequalities on the tensor rank. We also show that the rank of a uniform hypergraph is independent of the ordering of its vertices, and the Laplacian tensor and the signless Laplacian tensor have the same rank for odd-bipartite even uniform hypergraphs.

Abstract:For a square matrix A of index 1, the block-rank equationrankABCX=rank(A)is studied. Geometrical conditions are given to characterize the solution of this equation. Further, all matrices B and C are described for the solution X=A#, where A# is the group inverse of A. In addition, we extend these results to reflexive generalized inverses. This contributes to a result recently obtained by Wei [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 17 (1996) 744] and it is a generalization of a result by Groß [Lin. Alg. Appl. 289 (1999) 127].

Abstract:Given a matrix-valued function , where , , and are known matrices, we first review two known fundamental formulas for calculating the maximum and minimum ranks of the matrix-valued function when X runs over . We then establish some new formulas for calculating the maximum and minimum ranks of when X runs over with a restriction by using a simultaneous decomposition of A, B and C, and some tricky matrix operations. Some applications of the rank formulas in completing partially-specified matrices are also given.

Abstract:Matrix rank and inertia optimization problems are a class of discontinuous optimization problems in which the decision variables are matrices running over certain matrix sets, while the ranks and inertias of the variable matrices are taken as integer-valued objective functions. In this paper, we establish a group of explicit formulas for calculating the maximal and minimal values of the rank and inertia objective functions of the Hermitian matrix expression $A_1 - B_1XB_1^{*}$ subject to the common Hermitian solution of a pair of consistent matrix equations $B_2XB^{*}_2 = A_2$ and $B_3XB_3^{*} = A_3$, and Hermitian solution of the consistent matrix equation $B_4X= A_4$, respectively. Many consequences are obtained, in particular, necessary and sufficient conditions are established for the triple matrix equations $B_1XB^{*}_1 =A_1$, $B_2XB^{*}_2 = A_2$ and $B_3XB^{*}_3 = A_3$ to have a common Hermitian solution, as necessary and sufficient conditions for the two matrix equations $B_1XB^{*}_1 =A_1$ and $B_4X = A_4$ to have a common Hermitian solution.

Abstract:It is well known that in C[X], the product of two polynomials is equal to the product of their greatest common divisor and their least common multiple. In a recent paper, we proved a similar relation between the ranks of matrix polynomials. More precisely, the sum of the ranks of two matrix polynomials is equal to the sum of the rank of the greatest common divisor of the polynomials applied to the respective matrix and the rank of the least common multiple of the polynomials applied to the respective matrix. In this paper, we present three new proofs for this result. In addition to these, we present two more applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the problem of the operation law of the generalized inverse. The concepts of the mixed first and second absorption laws about the generalized inverse are proposed. By using the concept of generalized Schur complement and the matrix rank method, the extremal ranks of matrix expressions which are associated with the mixed second absorption law are investigated, and the formulas of the maximal and minimal ranks of these matrix expressions are derived. Furthermore, the necessary and sufficient conditions of the mixed second absorption laws on {1}-inverse and {1, 3}- inverse, {1}-inverse and {1, 4}-inverse are established by using these formulas.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:We provide a new proof of a sharp lower bound for the rank of the Hadamard product of positive semidefinite matrices. Our proof uses standard matrix analysis tools and involves the rank of one factor and the Kruskal rank of the other. It leads to a new understanding of when the Hadamard exponential of a positive semidefinite matrix can be singular.

Abstract:This paper considers the global geometry of general low-rank minimization problems via the Burer-Monterio factorization approach. For the rank-$1$ case, we prove that there is no spurious second-order critical point for both symmetric and asymmetric problems if the rank-$2$ RIP constant $\delta$ is less than $1/2$. Combining with a counterexample with $\delta=1/2$, we show that the derived bound is the sharpest possible. For the arbitrary rank-$r$ case, the same property is established when the rank-$2r$ RIP constant $\delta$ is at most $1/3$. We design a counterexample to show that the non-existence of spurious second-order critical points may not hold if $\delta$ is at least $1/2$. In addition, for any problem with $\delta$ between $1/3$ and $1/2$, we prove that all second-order critical points have a positive correlation to the ground truth. Finally, the strict saddle property, which can lead to the polynomial-time global convergence of various algorithms, is established for both the symmetric and asymmetric problems when the rank-$2r$ RIP constant $\delta$ is less than $1/3$. The results of this paper significantly extend several existing bounds in the literature.

We explore properties of the generalized inverses of tensors on solving tensor equations and computing formulas of block tensors.
