Abstract:This paper found the maximal rank and the minimal rank of A- + B- - A-(A + B)B- by using singular value decomposition of a matrix, and obtain the equivalent conditions for A- + B- =A-(A + B)B~ for some A-∈A{1},B-∈B{1}.

Abstract:In this article we study the structure and properties of g-inverse M− of the bordered matrixM=ABC0,which is partitioned conforming with M,M−=D1D2D3D4by applying the multiple quotient singular value decomposition QQ-SVD. From the structure of M−, we discuss the relations among D1,D2,D3 and D4, and derive equivalent conditions for M− to be a bordered matrix. By studying D1 in M−, we obtain some equivalent conditions for D1 to be a g-inverse of A.

Abstract:For a square matrix A of index 1, the block-rank equationrankABCX=rank(A)is studied. Geometrical conditions are given to characterize the solution of this equation. Further, all matrices B and C are described for the solution X=A#, where A# is the group inverse of A. In addition, we extend these results to reflexive generalized inverses. This contributes to a result recently obtained by Wei [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 17 (1996) 744] and it is a generalization of a result by Groß [Lin. Alg. Appl. 289 (1999) 127].

Abstract:For the computation of the generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) of a large matrix pair (A,B) of full column rank, the GSVD is commonly formulated as two mathematically equivalent generalized eigenvalue problems, so that a generalized eigensolver can be applied to one of them and the desired GSVD components are then recovered from the computed generalized eigenpairs. Our concern in this paper is, in finite precision arithmetic, which generalized eigenvalue formulation is numerically preferable to compute the desired GSVD components more accurately. We make a detailed perturbation analysis on the two formulations and show how to make a suitable choice between them. Numerical experiments illustrate the results obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an extended Ulm-like method for solving the inverse singular value problem (ISVP for short) with multiple and/or zero singular values. Compared with the Ulm-like method, the proposed method reduces the amount of calculations and is well-defined even when multiple and/or zero singular values appear. Under the nonsingularity assumption for the relative generalized Jacobian at a solution and by using a new technique, a convergence analysis is provided and the quadratic convergence is proved. Our results in the present paper improve and extend significantly the corresponding ones of Vong et al. (2011) and Shen et al. (2018) for the ISVP with distinct and positive singular values and/or with square matrices. In particular, we solve the interesting problem raised in Vong et al. (2011): whether the Ulm-like method and its convergence result can be extended to the cases of multiple singular values and of zero singular values. Numerical results reveal that the extended Ulm-like method is an efficient algorithm for the ISVPs even when multiple and/or zero singular values appear.

Abstract:A Gaussian elimination algorithm is presented that reveals the numerical rank of a matrix and identifies a square nonsingular submatrix of maximum dimension. The bounds on the singular values of the submatrix and its Schur complement are similar to the best known bounds for rank revealing LU factorization, but in contrast to existing methods the algorithm does not make use of the normal matrix. An implementation for dense matrices is described whose computational cost is roughly twice the cost of an LU factorization with complete pivoting. Because of its flexibility in choosing pivot elements, the algorithm is amenable to implementation with blocked memory access and for sparse matrices.

Abstract:The joint bidiagonalization (JBD) method has been used to compute some extreme generalized singular values and vectors of a large regular matrix pair {A,L}, where we propose three approaches to compute approximate generalized singular values and vectors. We make a numerical analysis of the underlying JBD process and establish relationships between it and two mathematically equivalent Lanczos bidiagonalizations in finite precision. Based on the results of numerical analysis, we investigate the convergence of the approximate generalized singular values and vectors of {A,L}. The results show that, under some mild conditions, the semiorthogonality of Lanczos type vectors suffices to deliver approximate generalized singular values with the same accuracy as the full orthogonality does, meaning that it is only necessary to seek for efficient semiorthogonalization strategies for the JBD process. We also establish a sharp bound for the residual norm of an approximate generalized singular value and corresponding approximate right generalized singular vectors, which can reliably estimate the residual norm without explicitly computing the approximate right generalized singular vectors before the convergence occurs.

Abstract:Square matrices of the form $\widetilde{\mathbf{A}} =\mathbf{A} + \mathbf{e}D \mathbf{f}^*$ are considered. An explicit expression for the inverse is given, provided $\widetilde{\mathbf{A}}$ and $D$ are invertible with $\text{rank}(\widetilde{\mathbf{A}}) =\text{rank}(\mathbf{A})+\text{rank}(\mathbf{e}D \mathbf{f}^*)$. The inverse is presented in two ways, one that uses singular value decomposition and another that depends directly on the components $\mathbf{A}$, $\mathbf{e}$, $\mathbf{f}$ and $D$. Additionally, a matrix determinant lemma for singular matrices follows from the derivations.

The Power of Bidiagonal Matrices

Abstract:Bidiagonal matrices are widespread in numerical linear algebra, not least because of their use in the standard algorithm for computing the singular value decomposition and their appearance as LU factors of tridiagonal matrices. We show that bidiagonal matrices have a number of interesting properties that make them powerful tools in a variety of problems, especially when they are multiplied together. We show that the inverse of a product of bidiagonal matrices is insensitive to small componentwise relative perturbations in the factors if the factors or their inverses are nonnegative. We derive componentwise rounding error bounds for the solution of a linear system $Ax = b$, where $A$ or $A^{-1}$ is a product $B_1 B_2\dots B_k$ of bidiagonal matrices, showing that strong results are obtained when the $B_i$ are nonnegative or have a checkerboard sign pattern. We show that given the \fact\ of an $n\times n$ totally nonnegative matrix $A$ into the product of bidiagonal matrices, $\|A^{-1}\|_{\infty}$ can be computed in $O(n^2)$ flops and that in floating-point arithmetic the computed result has small relative error, no matter how large $\|A^{-1}\|_{\infty}$ is. We also show how factorizations involving bidiagonal matrices of some special matrices, such as the Frank matrix and the Kac--Murdock--Szegö matrix, yield simple proofs of the total nonnegativity and other properties of these matrices.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the problem of the operation law of the generalized inverse. The concepts of the mixed first and second absorption laws about the generalized inverse are proposed. By using the concept of generalized Schur complement and the matrix rank method, the extremal ranks of matrix expressions which are associated with the mixed second absorption law are investigated, and the formulas of the maximal and minimal ranks of these matrix expressions are derived. Furthermore, the necessary and sufficient conditions of the mixed second absorption laws on {1}-inverse and {1, 3}- inverse, {1}-inverse and {1, 4}-inverse are established by using these formulas.
