Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the problem of the operation law of the generalized inverse. The concepts of the mixed first and second absorption laws about the generalized inverse are proposed. By using the concept of generalized Schur complement and the matrix rank method, the extremal ranks of matrix expressions which are associated with the mixed second absorption law are investigated, and the formulas of the maximal and minimal ranks of these matrix expressions are derived. Furthermore, the necessary and sufficient conditions of the mixed second absorption laws on {1}-inverse and {1, 3}- inverse, {1}-inverse and {1, 4}-inverse are established by using these formulas.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with constructions and characterizations of matrix equalities that involve mixed products of Moore–Penrose inverses and group inverses of two matrices. We first construct a mixed reverse-order law ( A ⁢ B ) † = B ∗ ⁢ ( A ∗ ⁢ A ⁢ B ⁢ B ∗ ) # ⁢ A ∗ , and show that this matrix equality always holds through the use of a special matrix rank equality and some matrix range operations, where A and B are two matrices of appropriate sizes, ( ⋅ ) ∗ , ( ⋅ ) † and ( ⋅ ) # mean the conjugate transpose, the Moore–Penrose inverse, and the group inverse of a matrix, respectively. We then give a diverse range of variation forms of this equality, and derive necessary and sufficient conditions for them to hold. Especially, we show an interesting fact that the two reverse-order laws ( A ⁢ B ) † = B † ⁢ A † and ( A ∗ ⁢ A ⁢ B ⁢ B ∗ ) # = ( B ⁢ B ∗ ) # ⁢ ( A ∗ ⁢ A ) # are equivalent.

Abstract:A matrix over ring with identity has the consecutive-column (CC) property if for all k, all its relevant submatrices having k consecutive rows and the first k columns are invertible. Similarly, the consecutive-row (CR) is defined. In this paper, we show that a arbitrary m x n matrix has both CC and CR properties if and only if it admits a certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This factorization is unique. We also show that there is a mutual 1 - 1 relations between the matrices having CC and CR properties and this certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This bidiagonal factorization has important applications in computer aided geometry design, electrical network and many other fields.

Abstract:If $a$ and $b$ are a pair of invertible elements, then $ab$ is also invertible and the inverse of the product $ab$ satisfying $$(ab)^{-1}=a^{-1}b^{-1}$$ is known as the {\it forward-order law}. This article establishes a few sufficient conditions of the forward-order law for the core inverse of elements in rings with involution. It also presents the forward-order law for the weighted core inverse and the triple forward-order law for the core inverse. Additionally, we discuss the hybrid forward-order law among the Moore-Penrose inverse, the group inverse, and the core inverse.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new concept called left (right) g-MP inverse in a $*$-monoid. The relations of this type of generalized inverse with left inverse along an element are investigated. Also, the reverse order law for the inverse along an element is studied. Then, the existence criteria and formulae of the inverse of the product of triple elements along an element are investigated in a monoid. Finally, we further study left and right g-MP inverses, the inverse along an element in the context of rings.

Also, we study various mixed-type reverse order laws for the $(b,c)$-inverse. As a consequence, we get results related to the reverse order law for the inverse along an element. More general case of reverse order law $(a_1a_2)^{(b_3, c_3)}=a_2^{(b_2, c_2)}a_1^{(b_1, c_1)}$ is considered too.

Abstract:We give a full analytic solution to a particular case of the algebraic Riccati equation $XWW^*WX=W^*$ for any matrix $W$ (possibly non-square or non-symmetric) in using the Schur method, terms of the SVD decomposition of $W$. In particular, $(WX)^3=WX$ and $(XW)^3=XW$ for any solution $X$. We show that for $W=AB$, matrix $X=B^+ A^+$ is a solution of this equation if and only if the reverse order law holds, i.e., ${(AB)}^+=B^+ A^+$. For a Hermitian and invertible $W$ the maximal and stabilizing Hermitian solutions is shown to be equal to $W^+$. Equivalence to the equation $XWX=W^+$ is proven.

Abstract:We give a constructive characterization of matrices satisfying the reverse-order law for the Moore--Penrose pseudoinverse. In particular, for a given matrix $A$ we construct another matrix $B$, of arbitrary compatible size and chosen rank, in terms of the right singular vectors of $A$, such that the reverse order law for $AB$ is satisfied. Moreover, we show that any matrix satisfying this law comes from a similar construction. As a consequence, several equivalent conditions to $B^+ A^+$ being a pseudoinverse of $AB$ are given, for example $\mathcal{C}(A^*AB)=\mathcal{C}(BB^*A^*)$ or $B\left(AB\right)^+A$ being an orthogonal projection. In addition, we parameterize all possible SVD decompositions of a fixed matrix and give Greville-like equivalent conditions for $B^+A^+$ being a $\{1,2\}$-,$\{1,2,3\}$- and $\{1,2,4\}$-inverse of $AB$, with a geometric insight in terms of the principal angles between $\mathcal{C}(A^*)$ and $\mathcal{C}(B)$.

Abstract:Our first objective is to present equivalent conditions for the solvability of the system of matrix equations ADA = A, D= B and CAD = C, where D is unknown, A, B,C are of appropriate dimensions, and to obtain its general solution in terms of appropriate inner inverses. Our leading idea is to find characterizations and representations of a subclass of inner inverses that satisfy some properties of outer inverses. A G-(B,C) inverse of A is defined as a solution of this matrix system. In this way, G-(B,C) inverses are defined and investigated as an extension of G-outer inverses. One-sided versions of G-(B,C) inverse are introduced as weaker kinds of G-(B,C) inverses and generalizations of one-sided versions of G-outer inverse. Applying the G-(B,C) inverse and its one-sided versions, we propose three new partial orders on the set of complex matrices. These new partial orders extend the concepts of G-outer (T, S)-partial order and one-sided G-outer (T, S)-partial orders.

Abstract:Let A be a real square matrix and VTAV = G be an upper Hessenberg matrix with positive subdiagonal entries, where V is an orthogonal matrix. Then the implicit Q-theorem states that once the first column of V is given then V and G are uniquely determined. In this paper, three results are established. First, it holds a reverse order implicit Q-theorem: once the last column of V is given, then V and G are uniquely determined too. Second, it is proved that for a Krylov subspace two formulations of the Arnoldi process are equivalent and in one to one correspondence. Finally, by the equivalence relation and the reverse order implicit Q-theorem, it is proved that for the Krylov subspace, if the last vector of vector sequence generated by the Arnoldi process is given, then the vector sequence and resulting Hessenberg matrix are uniquely determined.

Abstract:For a square matrix A of index 1, the block-rank equationrankABCX=rank(A)is studied. Geometrical conditions are given to characterize the solution of this equation. Further, all matrices B and C are described for the solution X=A#, where A# is the group inverse of A. In addition, we extend these results to reflexive generalized inverses. This contributes to a result recently obtained by Wei [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 17 (1996) 744] and it is a generalization of a result by Groß [Lin. Alg. Appl. 289 (1999) 127].

Abstract:In this paper, we give some basic properties for the left (right) inverse, rank and product of tensors. The existence of order 2 left (right) inverses of tensors is characterized. We obtain some equalities and inequalities on the tensor rank. We also show that the rank of a uniform hypergraph is independent of the ordering of its vertices, and the Laplacian tensor and the signless Laplacian tensor have the same rank for odd-bipartite even uniform hypergraphs.
