Abstract:Atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) exhibits a wide band gap, as well as excellent thermal and chemical stability, and thus has been used in ultraviolet light emission and as building blocks for two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures. Large-area h-BN films for technical applications can now be produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Unfortunately, grain boundaries (GBs) are ubiquitously introduced as a result of the coalescence of grains with different crystallographic orientations. It is well known that the properties of materials largely depend on GB structures. Here, we carried out a systematic study on the GB structures in CVD-grown polycrystalline h-BN monolayer films with a transmission electron microscope. Interestingly, most of these GBs are revealed to be formed via overlapping between neighboring grains, which are distinct from the covalently bonded GBs as commonly observed in other 2D materials. Further density functional theory calculations show that hydrogen plays an essential role in overlapping GB formation. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the microstructures and formation mechanisms of GBs in CVD-grown h-BN films, which should be informative in guiding the precisely controlled synthesis of large-area single-crystalline h-BN and other 2D materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and monolayer hexagonal BN (h-BN), are attractive for demonstrating fundamental physics in materials and potential applications in next-generation electronics. Atomic sheets containing hybridized bonds involving elements B, N and C over wide compositional ranges could result in new materials with properties complementary to those of graphene and h-BN, enabling a rich variety of electronic structures, properties and applications. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of large-area atomic layers of h-BNC material, consisting of hybridized, randomly distributed domains of h-BN and C phases with compositions ranging from pure BN to pure graphene. Our studies reveal that their structural features and bandgap are distinct from those of graphene, doped graphene and h-BN. This new form of hybrid h-BNC material enables the development of bandgap-engineered applications in electronics and optics and properties that are distinct from those of graphene and h-BN.

Abstract:The electronic structure of C70 molecule with D5h symmetry has been studied using a simple tight-binding approximation. Comparing the results with those of local-density approximation calculation and experiment, we have determined the hopping matrix element. We have also compared the electronic structure and charge density over cluster of C70 with the results of ellipsoid model, and found the angular momentum and magnetic quantum number (l and m) of each bunch and level.

Abstract:The thermal stability and electronic structures of two dimensional Cx(BN)y compounds are studied using first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. Although, from total energy calculations, it was well-established that phase-segregated atomic arrangements had the lowest energy, we found that due to the high activation energy required for phase-segregation process, evenly distributed configurations are stable at room temperature. Furthermore, the energy bandgap (EG) of the evenly distributed Cx(BN)y compounds is dependent on the carbon concentration. By controlling the carbon concentration in the compound, the EG of the compound material can be adjusted for electronic applications.

Abstract:Well-crystallized BCN compounds have been prepared from melamine (C3H6N6) and boron oxidation (B2O3) at pressures above 25 GPa and temperatures higher than 2500 K. The morphology of synthetic BCN samples was characterized transmission electron microscope. The atomic B/C/N ratio was determined by Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Abstract:We study the electronic structure of C60 and C70 molecules within the tight-binding approximation. Our approach is based on recursive evaluations of the generating function, which provide the density of states of the system. Our results for C60 are consistent with previous calculations using very different methods, and we have also obtained results for the much-less-studied C70 case.

Abstract:Recent studies of electronic structure of solid fullerenes have revealed many interesting properties of these systems. Here, we are interested in the effects of substitution of two carbon atoms by nitrogen and boron. We calculate the electronic structure of the C 58 BN cluster as well as its dispersion relation in the fcc crystalline phase. We consider the two cases where the nitrogen and the boron are neighbors and the case where they are situated far apart. In our all-electron calculation, we adopt the mixed basis approach in which we include the 1s and 2p orbitals in addition to plane waves. We investigate the existence of the donor and acceptor levels in both cases where N and B are neighbors and where they are apart. Furthermore, the electronic density in their neighborhood will be largely affected. The double bond which existed in the C 60 case is now replaced by a single bond. The consequences of substitutional doping, which is to create donor and acceptor levels and to broaden the valence and conduction bands; the anisotropy in the band dispersion; and the eventual relaxation of the nitrogen and boron atoms to a new position are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, first-principles calculations are performed to study the influence of atomic design on the structural and electronic properties of pseudo-cubic BC2N. The calculated results indicate that atomic structures and bond configurations have significant effects on the electronic properties. From band structure and total density of state, it is found that there exist five semiconductor configurations and two semi-metal configurations in pesudo-cubic BC2N. Within LDA approximation, the predicted band gaps vary from 0.7 eV to 2.6 eV for the five semiconductor configurations. A recently proposed band gap calculation method, termed Δ-sol method, is applied to correct the obtained energy band gaps, and the corrected range is from 2.9 eV to 4.4 eV. These results indicate that the band gap tuning in super hard materials can be implemented via atomic design.

Abstract:An electronic structure calculation with full-potential and all-electron ab initio formalism is performed for hypothetical low-temperature simple cubic phases ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] space groups) of C 60 molecular crystal, in which every molecule is orientationally freezed. The degeneracies at special k-points, the magnitudes of energy gaps, and the widths of bands have been found to be sensitive to the orientation of the fullerenes in the crystal. Our result suggests that the structure with [Formula: see text] space group with –22° rotation around [111] directions, which David et al. proposed, is more stable compared to the structure with [Formula: see text] space group with the same rotation angle.
Electronic Structures and Optical Properties of Bucky Tubes

Abstract:In the present paper the geometric structure of a recently found sort of Fullerene, Buckytubes, was described by considering them to be formed by rolling up graphite sheets in different manners. The empirical linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) method was used to study their band structure, density of state (DOS) and optical properties. Our results show that their properties not only differ from graphite but also vary according to the diameter and the helicity of tubules. Under the tight-binding approximation scheme, the boundary condition is an important factor to determine the electronic properties of various Buckytubes. Finally, a rule for the electronic properties of Buckytubes was gained.

Abstract:The electronic structures of substitutional doped fullerenes C59B, C59N, C58B2 , C58N2 , C58BN have been calculated using a tight-binding approximation method. The results indicate that a boron and a nitrogen atom induce a acceptor state and a donor state respectively. Two boron and two nitrogen atoms make the impurity states deep.

Abstract:A previous study reported an observed unidentified graphite/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) superlattice structure in special multilayer heterojunction devices via cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy [Haigh S. J. et al., Nat. Mater. 2012, 11, 764-767]. In this letter, we designed and confirmed two possible graphite/hBN superlattice structures (AA and Ab), which were probably the structures observed by the aforementioned experiment. The formation enthalpies of both structures were negative, indicating that they could be successfully synthesized as the previous experiment reported. The results also showed that both structures possessed dynamic stability and elastic stability. Importantly, the theoretical interlayer distances of AA and Ab were 3.34 and 3.30 angstrom, respectively, which were consistent with the experimental value of 3.32 angstrom. The X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectra of both structures were simulated to aid in distinguishing them. This study on the atomic structure of the graphite/hBN superlattice lays a foundation for further research and application of this material.

Abstract:We have developed a highly efficient computation method based on density functional theory (DFT) within a set of fully symmetrized basis functions for the C60 buckyball, which possesses the icosahedral (Ih) point-group symmetry with 120 symmetry operations. We demonstrate that our approach is much more efficient than the conventional approach based on three-dimensional plane waves. When applied to the calculation of optical transitions, our method is more than one order of magnitude faster than the existing DFT package with a conventional plane-wave basis. This makes it very convenient for modeling optical and transport properties of quantum devices related to buckyball crystals. The method introduced here can be easily extended to other fullerene-like materials.

Abstract:Using the universal parameter tight-binding method, we have investigated the electronic structures of C60Br6, C60Br8 and C60Br24 which have been synthesized recently. It is found that the electronic states of C-Br ppsigma bonds mix with those of C-C pppi bonds, and all these states form the closed shell structures of C60Br6, C60Br8 and C60Br24. It is also found that the density of states at the highest occupied state of C60Br24 which displays T(h) symmetry is high.

Abstract:One-dimensional chain structures of Bn (n = 6-16) are calculated by employing a 6-311G* basis set. The present calculations show that all the chain structures of interest have local minima with large binding energy per atom and short bond length. It is also found that many previous reported structures of B6 and B7 clusters are saddle points and the one-dimensional chain structures are the corresponding ground-state structures of B6 and B7 clusters.

Abstract:Chen’s lattice inversion method is extended to calculate the interatomic potentials of the zinc-blende-type binary compounds with a virtual lattice technique, which proposes a scheme to obtain non-empirical interatomic potentials from first principle calculations. In this paper, the interatomic pair potentials ΦN–N, ΦB–B and ΦB–N are obtained from the ab initio cohesive energy curves relevant to the three distinct BN structures. The modified Stillinger–Weber (MSW) three-body potentials are determined by the dependence of the total energy on the lattice distortion. Based on the calculated interatomic potentials, the structural properties and lattice dynamics of cubic boron nitride (c-BN) have been evaluated.
First-principles study of two new boron nitride structures: C12-BN and O16-BN

Abstract:Based on the first-principles method, we predict two new stable BN allotropes: C12-BN and O16-BN, which belong to cubic and orthorhombic crystal systems, respectively. It is confirmed that both the phases are thermally and dynamically stable. The results of molecular dynamics simulations suggest that both the BN phases are highly stable even at high temperatures of 1000 K. In the case of mechanical properties, C12-BN has a bulk modulus of 359 GPa and a hardness of 43.4 GPa, making it a novel superhard material with potential technological and industrial applications. Electronic band calculations reveal that both C12-BN and O16-BN are insulators with direct band gaps of 3.02 eV and 3.54 eV, respectively. The XRD spectra of C12-BN and O16-BN are also simulated to provide more information for possible experimental observation. Our findings enrich the BN allotrope family and are expected to stimulate further experimental interest.

Abstract:Theoretical studies of morphology, stability, and electronic structure of monolayer hexagonal CBN alloys with rich content of h‐BN and carbon concentration not exceeding 50% are presented. The studies are based on the bond order type of the valence force field to account for the interactions between atomic constituents and Monte Carlo method with Metropolis algorithm to establish equilibrium distribution of atoms over the lattice. It is found that the phase separation into graphene and h‐BN domains occurs in the majority of growth conditions. Only in N‐rich growth conditions, it is possible to obtain a quasi uniform distribution of carbon atoms over the boron sublattice. It is been predicted that the energy gap in stoichiometric Cx(BN)1−x alloys exhibits extremely strong bowing.

Abstract:The BCN films were synthesized on Si (110) wafers by using dual ion beam sputtering deposition from boron carbide target. The influences of ion assist source energy and N-2 relative flow rate on the surface roughness, mechanical properties and chemical bonding structure of BCN films were investigated systematically. The surface roughness was measured using non-contact optical surface profilometer and the mechanical properties of BCN films were evaluated with nano-indenter. The BCN films were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The results showed that the BCN films' surface roughness varied in the range of 5-15 nm, and their hardness and reduced elastic modulus fluctuated in the scope of 18-29 GPa and 192-229 GPa, respectively. When the BCN films' surface roughness varied in the range of 8-12 nm, the values of hardness and reduced elastic modulus were fluctuated slightly. The BCN films with the smoothest surface (R-a = 5 nm) and the highest hardness of 28 GPa were obtained at the ion assist source energy of 200 eV and the N-2 relative flow rate of 50%. The BCN films were amorphous and contained several bonding states such as B-N, B-C and C-N with B-C-N hybridization. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The varied bonding state and microstructure characterization were discussed for carbon–boron nitrogen (CBN) with abundant phase structure and nanostructure, which were synthesized directly by mechanical alloying technique at room temperature. According to the results of SEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of CBN with different ball milling time, it is substantiated that the bonding state and microstructure for CBN were closely related to the ball milling time. With the increase of the ball milling time, some new chemical bonding states of CBN were observed, which implies that some new bonding state and microstructures have been formed. The results of XPS are accordance with that of X-ray diffraction of CBN.
