Abstract:Cadmium telluride (CdTe)-based cells have emerged as the leading commercialized thin film photovoltaic technology and has intrinsically better temperature coefficients, energy yield, and degradation rates than Si technologies. More than 30 GW peak (GW p ) of CdTe-based modules are installed worldwide, multiple companies are in production, modules are shipping at up to 18.6% efficiency, and lab cell efficiency is above 22%. We review developments in the science and technology that have occurred over approximately the past decade. These achievements were enabled by manufacturing innovations and scaling module production, as well as maximizing photocurrent through window layer optimization and alloyed CdSe x Te 1-x (CST) absorbers. Improved chlorine passivation processes, film microstructure, and serendipitous Se defect passivation significantly increased minority carrier lifetime. Efficiencies >22% have been realized for both Cu and As doped CST-based cells. The path to further efficiency gains hinges primarily on increasing open circuit voltage (V oc ) and fill factor (FF) through innovations in materials, fabrication methods, and device stacks. Replacing the longstanding Cu doping with As doping is resulting in better module stability and is being translated to large-scale production. To realize 25% efficiency and >1 V V oc , research and development is needed to increase the minority carrier lifetime beyond 100 ns, reduce grain boundary and interface recombination, and tailor band diagrams at the front and back interfaces. Many of these goals have been realized separately however combining them together using scalable manufacturing approaches has been elusive to date. We review these achievements and outstanding opportunities for this remarkable photovoltaic technology.

Abstract:The thickness of the CdS:O window layer plays an important role in CdTe-based thin-film solar cell performance. Normally with thinner CdS:O layer, the cells' short wavelength response can be enhanced to achieve higher short-circuit current density (J(sc)), while the open-circuit voltage (V-oc) and fill factor (FF) would degrade. Previous research finds that reducing the CdS:O layer thickness to less than 40 nm would decrease the cells' efficiency (Eff.). In this work, 18% efficiency CdTe thin-film solar cell with only 30 nm CdS:O window layer is demonstrated. A post annealing process is developed to fabricate high efficiency cells with ultrathin CdS:O layers. Our results indicate that the high defect density in CdTe absorber, low built-in potential (V-bi) and high back contact barrier (Phi(b)) are partially responsible for the reduced V-oc and FF of cells with ultrathin CdS:O layers. The post annealing process can increase the carrier concentration (N-cv ) and V-bb and decrease the Phi(b), in which way improves V-oc and FF for higher cell efficiency.

Abstract:CdTe thin film solar cell, as an outstanding representative of the second-generation solar cells, has been produced and applied on a large scale. However, due to the low concentration of photogenerated carriers and short lifetime of minority carriers in its absorber layer, the open-circuit voltage and filling factor of the cell is limited and the further improvement of the cell power conversion efficiency is hindered. Various strategies and techniques such as doping, passivation, adding buffer and electron reflecting layers are commonly used to improve the defects and deficiencies of the CdTe absorber layer. In this paper, the relationship between p-type doping and non-p-type doping (passivation, buffer layer and electron reflection) is analyzed. An attempt is made to summarize the mechanism and pathway of efficient doping of CdTe from a large amount of published literature. After reviewing the recently CdTe absorber layer doping research in terms of doping mechanism, precursor selection, quantification and distribution, and doping process. It obtained that the qualitative and quantitative studies of key impurity elements, optimization of doping precursors, and new non-p-type doping elements are the future directions of doping research. Finally, this paper prospects for CdTe absorber layer doping in regard to the synthesis of absorber layer composites.

Abstract:The structure of CIGS thin film solar cells and new research results in their absorption layer fabrications were described. The vacuum and non-vacuum preparation techniques were compared and non-vacuum preparation techniques has the advantages on printing speed, low cost and mass production. CIGS nanocrystals with small and uniform size synthesized are the key technology for the non-vacuum preparation method. We reviewed the research development on various synthesize of CIGS nanomaterials including low temperature sol-gel, microwave, solvothermal, hot injection, gas reduction, and chemical deposition process etc., and the advantages and disadvantages of various methods at the end of the paper. The suggestions and views on further study of CIGS nanoparticles were also presented.
The study on saturation current and ideality factor of CdTe solar cell based on CdS window layer deposited with hydrogen peroxide

Abstract:By adding hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to the solution, a more compact cadmium sulfide (CdS) film with larger optical band gap is fabricated by chemical bath deposition method. The oxidation of CdS is confirmed by the formation of cadmium sulfate (CdSO4) in the CdS window layer via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigation. The analysis of quantum efficiency considering the alloy CdS1-yTey shows that the oxygenated CdS suppress the S-Te interdiffusion, which promotes the spectral response in short-wave range. Moreover, this oxygenated CdS layer promoted the conversion efficiency of the cadmium telluride (CdTe) based solar cell from 11.2% to 14.0% due to the improvement of open-circuit voltage and the fill factor. The transport mechanisms of saturation current are evaluated by temperature dependent current-voltage curves. Results show that the oxygenated window layer reduces both the interfacial and bulk recombination, thus improves the ideality factor. The decrease of bulk recombination in depletion region is attributed to the fewer trap level induced from S-Te interdiffusion. The decrease of interfacial recombination is attributed to the larger optical band gap of oxygenated CdS, which results in a spike-like conduction band alignment at CdS/CdTe heterojunction.

Abstract:In recent years CdTe thin film solar cells (SCs) have demonstrated promising market application foreground. However, a relatively large gap between the achieved SCs efficiencies and the theoretically predicted maximum efficiency still exists. In particular, the open circuit voltage (Voc) of the CdTe thin film SCs could be further increased, which is limited by high-work-function of CdTe. In this work, p-type narrow-gap SnTe thin films are proposed as a buffer layer in the back contact of CdTe SCs. The band alignment at SnTe/CdTe interface renders a small valance band offset, which expedites hole transport from the CdTe absorber to the hole electrode and improves the Ohmic contact for CdTe. With the insertion of a SnTe single buffer layer at the back contact, a Cu-free CdTe SC has been developed, which displays the same cell efficiency as the traditional cells using CuxTe as the back contact. The Voc of cells with ZnTe: Cu/SnTe double-layer at back contact is notably higher than the CdTe SCs fabricated with CuxTe or ZnTe: Cu single-layer at the back contact. Furthermore, accretion of hole concentration is also demonstrated by the diffusion of Sn in the CdTe absorber layer. This work shows the potential to improve CdTe SCs by using a narrow-gap IV-VI compound semiconductor.
Scientific complications and controversies noted in the field of CdS/CdTe thin film solar cells and the way forward for further development

Abstract:Abstract Cadmium telluride-based solar cell is the most successfully commercialised thin film solar cell today. The laboratory-scale small devices have achieved ~ 22%, and commercial solar panels have reached ~ 18% conversion efficiencies. However, there are various technical complications and some notable scientific contradictions that appear in the scientific literature published since the early 1970s. This review paper discusses some of these major complications and controversies in order to focus future research on issues of material growth and characterisation, post-growth processing, device architectures and interpretation of the results. Although CdTe can be grown using more than 14 different growth techniques, successful commercialisation has been taken place using close-space sublimation and electrodeposition techniques only. The experimental results presented in this review are mainly based on electrodeposition. Historical trends of research and commercial successes have also been discussed compared to the timeline of novel breakthroughs in this field. Deeper understanding of these issues may lead to further increase in conversion efficiencies of this solar cell. Some novel ideas for further development of thin film solar cells are also discussed towards the end of this paper.

Strategy for Performance Enhancement of Cd1-XZnXTe/CdS Core/shell Quantum Dot Sensitized Solar Cells Through Band Adjustment

Abstract:Novel type-II core/shell structure quantum dos have been synthesized for solar cell photoelectrode material. Cd0.64Zn0.36Te and CdS were chosen as a core and shell, respectively, to generate type-II core/shell structure quantum dos (QDs). Density functional theory was employed to explore the energy structure of Cd1-xZnxTe/CdS core/shell QDs, revealing that introduction of Zn element is a feasible strategy to prepare CdTe/CdS based QDs with type-II core/shell structure. Then, Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs were synthesized by aqueous phase method. Microscopic measurements showed that Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs have high crystalline quality. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy together with optical spectra indicated an upward shift of the Cd0.64Zn0.36Te conduction band edge compared with CdTe, as also evidenced by systematic density functional theory based first principle calculation. Photoluminescence decay measurement also indicated the enhanced electron injection rate and decreased charge recombination of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QD sensitized TiO2 films. In addition, by optimizing the deposition cycles of the CdS shell, the power conversion efficiency of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QDs sensitized solar cells was enhanced.

Abstract:Advantages of ZnxCd1-x S solid solution photocatalyst were introduced. More common used preparation methods of ZnxCd1-xS photocatalyst were reviewed. The research progress about the performance of photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting and degradation of pollutants of ZnxCd1-x S photocatalyst were detailed introduced. The contents mainly included the following aspects: own different components, metal ion doping, semiconductor materials composite and carbon materials composite. Finally, the development trend of ZnxCd1-xS photocatalyst was prospected.

Abstract:Microstructure,chemical composition,film growth mechanism and photoelectric properties of CdTe films grown by vacuum sublimation were studied.Through analysis of XRD,TEM,XPS and photo/dark conductivity,the relation between substrate temperature and microstructure,composition and film oxidation was described systematically.The substrate temperature is the key parameter to decide the film quality.150 ℃ is confirmed to be the most suitable substrate temperature to obtain the film with the best photoelectric and physical properties.Furthermore,the mechanisms of film oxidation and film deposition were preliminarily discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, one of the most important advancements in cadmium telluride photovoltaic research and technology has been the realization that group-V doping is a viable strategy to increase open-circuit voltage and long-term reliability. Considering the critical importance of this topic, this article reviews the fundamentals of group-V doping, including the properties of group-V doped single crystals produced by various methods, doping mechanisms and limits, doping of polycrystalline films, and device performance. Research, which attempts to relate group-V doping to device efficiency, is assessed and the gaps in the current information are highlighted. We also provide important issues with group-V doping and suggest possible mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Among thin-film photovoltaic technology, cadmium telluride (CdTe) has achieved a truly impressive development that can commercially compete with silicon, which is still the king of the market. Solar cells made on a laboratory scale have reached efficiencies close to 22%, while modules made with fully automated in-line machines show efficiencies above 18%. This success represents the result of over 40 years of research, which led to effective and consolidated production processes. Based on a large literature survey on photovoltaics and on the results of research developed in our laboratories, we present the fabrication processes of both CdTe polycrystalline thin-film solar cells and photovoltaic modules. The most common substrates, the constituent layers, their interaction, the interfaces and the different “tricks” necessary to obtain highly efficient devices will be analyzed. A realistic industrial production process will be analytically described. Moreover, environmental aspects, end-of-life recycling and the life cycle assessment of CdTe-based modules will be deepened and discussed.

Abstract:Photovoltaics (PV) is solar electric power—a semiconductor-based technology that converts sunlight to electricity. Three decades of research has led to the discovery of new materials and devices and new processing techniques for low-cost manufacturing. This has resulted in improved sunlight-to-electricity conversion efficiencies, improved outdoor reliability, and lower module and system costs. The manufacture and sale of PV has grown into a $5 billion industry worldwide, with more than 740 megawatts of PV modules shipped in 2003. This paper reviews the significant progress that has occurred in PV materials and devices research over the past 30 years, focusing on the advances in crystal growth and materials research, and examines the challenges to reaching the ultimate potential of current-generation (crystalline silicon), next-generation (thin films and concentrators), and future-generation PV technologies. The latter includes innovative materials and device concepts that hold the promise of significantly higher conversion efficiencies and/or much lower costs.

Abstract:Photovoltaic devices have attracted enormous attention in recent decades. Except for silicon, a traditional photovoltaic material, a lot of new technologies have emerged for a reduction in costs and application in flexible devices. To present a relatively comprehensive view of such devices, this paper summarized the newest researches and challenges faced by different materials respectively. To be more specific, the general working principles of photovoltaic devices are explained initially and then the development of several typical solar cells are introduced, including silicon, Copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), organic, and perovskite cells, followed by a brief introduction of their fabrication processes. This paper aims to help with advances in manufacturing methods or device structures to improve solar cell efficiency through the analysis of the progress in the corresponding fields.

Abstract:With the deepening of study on perovskite solar cells (PSCs) all over the world, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) has rapidly increased from 3.8% to 25% in recent years, and the perovskite material is expected to become an ideal absorption material for solar cells at low cost in the future. However, some problems are necessary to solve on the way toward practical applications of perovskite solar cells. This paper summarizes the recent research progress from the aspects of structural improvement for further PCE enhancement, material stability and life improvement, large-area preparation, replacement of toxic ingredients, and resolution of hysteresis in performance characterization. The progress in these field has been very fruitful, and will provide references for future research.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
