Abstract:In real applications, such as consumer digital imaging, it is very common to record weakly blurred and strongly noisy images. Recently, a state-of-art algorithm named geometric locally adaptive sharpening (GLAS) has been proposed. By capturing local image structure, it can effectively combine denoising and sharpening together. However, there still exist two problems in the practice. On one hand, two hard thresholds have to be constantly adjusted with different images so as not to produce over-sharpening artifacts. On the other hand, the smoothing parameter must be manually set precisely. Otherwise, it will seriously magnify the noise. However, these parameters have to be set in advance and totally empirically. In a practical application, this is difficult to achieve. Thus, it is not easy to use and not smart enough. In an effort to improve the restoration effect of this situation by way of GLAS, an improved GLAS (IGLAS) algorithm by introducing the local phase coherence sharpening Index (LPCSI) metric is proposed in this paper. With the help of LPCSI metric, the two hard thresholds can be fixed at constant values for all images. Compared to the original method, the thresholds in our new algorithm no longer need to change with different images. Based on our proposed IGLAS, its automatic version is also developed in order to compensate for the disadvantages of manual intervention. Simulated and real experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can not only obtain better performances compared with the original method, but it is very easy to apply.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new discrete model for image denoising. We first smooth the gradient field of the observed image by a discrete total variation model. Then we construct a new discrete functional with the smoothed gradient fidelity term, which can alleviate the staircasing effect efficiently and preserve sharp discontinuities during the images denoising. Here, the difference discrete variation principle is used to get the discrete Euler-Lagrange equation. We also discuss some numerical experiments which prove our proposed model and algorithms to be more efficient.

Abstract:The restoration of blurred images corrupted by Poisson noise is an important topic in imaging science. The problem has recently received considerable attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a combined first-order and second-order variation model to restore blurred images corrupted by Poisson noise. Our model can substantially reduce the staircase effect, while preserving edges in the restored images, since it combines advantages of the first-order and second-order total variation. We study the issues of existence and uniqueness of a minimizer for this variational model. Moreover, we employ a gradient descentmethod to solve the associated Euler-Lagrange equation. Numerical results demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed method for Poisson noise removal problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the challenge of image deblurring in the presence of Gaussian noise. To achieve high-quality image restoration, we introduce an optimization framework that integrates four-directional total variation regularization, overlapping group sparsity, and a range of nonconvex penalties. This novel model effectively mitigates the staircase artifacts associated with total variation regularization and enhances restoration quality by leveraging domain-specific information about image pixels. Compared to the l1 norm, the nonconvex penalty applied to overlapping groups promotes sparsity in image gradients at the group level. To solve this nonconvex optimization problem, we propose a proximal alternating reweighted minimization algorithm, which has a proximal alternating scheme with a reweighted approximation of its subproblem. Theoretically, we establish that the sequences generated by the proposed algorithm converge to a critical point using the Kurdyka–Łojasiewicz property. Experimental results validate the superiority of our approach over competing methods.

Abstract:This work proposes a novel nonlinear parabolic equation with p(x) ‐growth conditions for image restoration and enhancement. Based on the generalized Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces with variable exponent, we demonstrate the well‐posedness of the proposed model. As a first result, we prove the existence of a weak solution to our model when the reaction term is bounded by a suitable function. Secondly, we use the approximations method to establish the existence of a nonnegative weak SOLA (Solution Obtained as Limit of Approximations) solution to the proposed model. We illustrate our theoretical results in the context of image denoising and enhancement. Specifically, we present various numerical implementations on a set of grayscale images. To further enrich these simulations, we assess the efficiency of the proposed model on several color images. The obtained numerical results strongly suggest that our model outperforms existing state‐of‐the‐art methods in terms of both visual and quantitative comparison, demonstrating superior efficiency and robustness in noise removal and contrast enhancement.

Abstract:Image denoising is a challenging task in the fields of image processing and computer vision. Inspired by the good performance of nonlinear fourth-order models in recovering smooth region, we proposed a fourth-order image denoising model. Using the fixed point theorem, we established the existence and uniqueness of the entropy solution. Based on the fast explicit diffusion scheme (FED), numerical experiments illustrate the effectiveness of the suggested method in image denoising. The results have been compared with three famous fourth-order models, You and Kaveh (YK) model, Lysaker, Lundervold and Tai (LLT) model and the more recent mean curvature (MC) model. The proposed model has the superiority in terms of removing noise while preserving image features.

Abstract:A challenge in image restoration is to recover a clear image from the blurry observation in the presence of different types of noise. There are few works addressing image deblurring under mixed noise. To handle this issue, we propose a general model based on classical wavelet tight frame regularization. We utilize a convexity-preserving term to obtain a component-wise convex model under a mild condition. Indeed, to reduce the cost of solving subproblems, the inexact Gauss–Seidel-based majorized semi-proximal alternating direction method of multipliers (sGS-imsPADMM) with relative error control is developed. Besides, the global convergence of sGS-imsPADMM is demonstrated. Numerical results for the image restoration problems show that the proposed model and solving approach are superior to some state-of-the-art methods both in numerical analysis and visual quality.

Abstract:This work tackles a novel partial differential equation based on a time-fractional order derivative for image denoising and restoration. We ameliorate the classical Perona–Malik model by considering Caputo time-fractional order derivative with a regularized diffusion. We start by investigating the existence of the solution to the proposed model. As a first result, we use the Faedo–Galerkin approach to prove the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution to an auxiliary fractional problem. Secondly, we establish the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution to our model via Schauder fixed point method. To validate the efficiency of our model, we present some numerical experiments on images with different features and various noise levels. We begin by introducing an adaptive discrete scheme to the proposed model. We illustrate the sensitivity of the time-fractional order derivative with respect to some well-known criteria. Finally, the obtained numerical results show a great efficiency and robustness against noise compared to the competitive models.

Abstract:To overcome the weakness of a total variation based model for image restoration, various high order (typically second order) regularization models have been proposed and studied recently. In this paper we analyze and test a fractional-order derivative based total $\alpha$-order variation model, which can outperform the currently popular high order regularization models. There exist several previous works using total $\alpha$-order variations for image restoration; however first no analysis is done yet and second all tested formulations, differing from each other, utilize the zero Dirichlet boundary conditions which are not realistic (while non-zero boundary conditions violate definitions of fractional-order derivatives). This paper first reviews some results of fractional-order derivatives and then analyzes the theoretical properties of the proposed total $\alpha$-order variational model rigorously. It then develops four algorithms for solving the variational problem, one based on the variational Split-Bregman idea and three based on direct solution of the discretise-optimization problem. Numerical experiments show that, in terms of restoration quality and solution efficiency, the proposed model can produce highly competitive results, for smooth images, to two established high order models: the mean curvature and the total generalized variation.
On a nonlinear nonlocal reaction-diffusion system applied to image restoration

Abstract:This paper deals with a novel nonlinear coupled nonlocal reaction-diffusion system proposed for image restoration, characterized by the advantages of preserving low gray level features and textures.The gray level indicator in the proposed model is regularized using a new method based on porous media type equations, which is suitable for recovering noisy blurred images. The well-posedness, regularity, and other properties of the model are investigated, addressing the lack of theoretical analysis in those existing similar types of models. Numerical experiments conducted on texture and satellite images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model in denoising and deblurring tasks.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Vast applications of derivative-free methods to restore the blurred images in compressive sensing has become an important trend in recent years. This research, a double direction method for better image restoration is proposed. Besides this, two double direction algorithms to solve constrained monotone nonlinear equations are presented. The main idea employed in the first algorithm is to approximate the Jacobian matrix via acceleration parameter to propose an effective derivative-free method. The second algorithm involve hybridizing the scheme of the first algorithm with Picard–Mann hybrid iterative scheme. In addition, the step length is calculated using inexact line search technique. The proposed methods are proven to be globally convergent under some mild conditions . The numerical experiment, shown in this paper, depicts the efficiency of the proposed methods. Abstract:This paper presents a stochastic differential equation (SDE) approach for general-purpose image restoration. The key construction consists in a mean-reverting SDE that transforms a high-quality image into a degraded counterpart as a mean state with fixed Gaussian noise. Then, by simulating the corresponding reverse-time SDE, we are able to restore the origin of the low-quality image without relying on any task-specific prior knowledge. Crucially, the proposed mean-reverting SDE has a closed-form solution, allowing us to compute the ground truth time-dependent score and learn it with a neural network. Moreover, we propose a maximum likelihood objective to learn an optimal reverse trajectory which stabilizes the training and improves the restoration results. In the experiments, we show that our proposed method achieves highly competitive performance in quantitative comparisons on image deraining, deblurring, and denoising, setting a new state-of-the-art on two deraining datasets. Finally, the general applicability of our approach is further demonstrated via qualitative results on image super-resolution, inpainting, and dehazing. Abstract:Image acquisition in many biomedical imaging modalities is corrupted by Poisson noise followed by additive Gaussian noise. While total variation and related regularization methods for solving biomedical inverse problems are known to yield high quality reconstructions, such methods mostly use log-likelihood of either Gaussian or Poisson noise models, and rarely use mixed Poisson-Gaussian (PG) noise model. There is a recent work which deals with exact PG likelihood and totalariation regularization. This method is developed using the log-likelihood of PG model along with total variation regularization adapts the primal-dual splitting algorithm, whose step size is restricted to be bounded by the inverse of the Lipschitz constant of PG log-likelihood. This leads to limitations in the convergence speed. On the other hand, ADMM methods do not have such step size restrictions; however, ADDM has never been applied for this problem, for the possible reason that PG log-likelihood is quite complex. In this paper, we develop an ADMM based optimization for total variation minimizing image restoration under PG log-likelihood. We achieve this by first developing a novel iterative method for computing the proximal solution of PG log-likelihood, deriving the termination conditions for this iterative method, and then integrating into a provable convergent ADMM scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated using restoration examples.

Abstract:We propose a new non-convex fractional-order Weber multiplicative denoising variational generalized function, which leads to a new fractional-order differential equation, and prove the existence of a unique solution to this equation. Furthermore, the model is solved using the partial differential equation (PDE) method and the alternating direction multiplier method (ADMM) to verify the theoretical results. The proposed model is tested on some symmetric and asymmetric medical computerized tomography (CT) images, and the experimental results show that the combination of the fractional-order differential equation and the Weber function has better performance in medical image restoration than the traditional model.

Abstract:Variational models with $\ell_1$-norm based regularization, in particular total variation (TV) and its variants, have long been known to offer superior image restoration quality, but processing speed remained a bottleneck, preventing their widespread use in the practice of color image processing. In this paper, by extending the grayscale image deblurring algorithm proposed in [Y. Wang, J. Yang, W. Yin, and Y. Zhang, SIAM J. Imaging Sci., 1 (2008), pp. 248272], we construct a simple and efficient algorithm for multichannel image deblurring and denoising, applicable to both within-channel and cross-channel blurs in the presence of additive Gaussian noise. The algorithm restores an image by minimizing an energy function consisting of an $\ell_2$-norm fidelity term and a regularization term that can be either TV, weighted TV, or regularization functions based on higher-order derivatives. Specifically, we use a multichannel extension of the classic TV regularizer (MTV) and derive our algorithm from an extended half-quadratic transform of Geman and Yang [IEEE Trans. Image Process., 4 (1995), pp. 932946]. For three-channel color images, the per-iteration computation of this algorithm is dominated by six fast Fourier transforms. The convergence results in [Y. Wang, J. Yang, W. Yin, and Y. Zhang, SIAM J. Imaging Sci., 1 (2008), pp. 248272] for single-channel images, including global convergence with a strong q-linear rate and finite convergence for some quantities, are extended to this algorithm. We present numerical results including images recovered from various types of blurs, comparisons between our results and those obtained from the deblurring functions in MATLAB's Image Processing Toolbox, as well as images recovered by our algorithm using weighted MTV and higher-order regularization. Our numerical results indicate that the processing speed, as attained by the proposed algorithm, of variational models with TV-like regularization can be made comparable to that of less sophisticated but widely used methods for color image restoration.
