Abstract:A silicone-contained biphenol type monomer, 4,4'-(1,3-dipropyl-tetramethyldisiloxane)bis-2-methoxyphenol(SIE), was used to modify phenolic novolac resin by being copolymerized with phenol and formaldehyde to yield SIE-modified phenolic resins (SPNs). The curing behavior of SPNs with hexamethyleneteramine (HMTA) was analyzed by DSC tests, and the non-isothermal curing kinetics were analyzed using the model-fitting and model-free isoconversional methods. Then, SPN/HMTA was used as the resin matrix, while surface-treated chopped sisal fiber was used as the reinforced filler to produce the silicon modified phenolic molding composites (SIEC). The finished composites expressed improved mechanical and thermal resistance properties compared with unmodified composites. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Bamboo, Soybean And Corn As Resources For Green Composites

Abstract:Bamboo, a well known plant has a broad application in nutrition, construction, handicrafts as well as furniture and decoration. A huge amount of bamboo wastes are disposed continuously as a byproduct of its utilization in various purposes especially in wood and furniture industries. A wide variety of researches and activities have been performed on utilization of bamboo wastes in manufacturing of green composites and hence, a wide assortment of substances have been tested to act as the supplementary components such as Portland cement, petrochemical polymers (e.g. poly-ethylene, polyvinyl chloride, poly-propylene, polyester resins), and recently biodegradable polymer matrices such as poly-lactic acid, plant proteins and poly-butylene-succinate. Scientific efforts have been studied the different combinations of bamboo wastes with polymer matrices and/or coupling agents. The most important items in these researches have been the mixing ratios of materials as composite components, physical and chemical properties of ingredient materials, production techniques and qualitative properties of composites such as physical characteristics, mechanical strength, durability, water and moisture resistance, abrasion resistance and external appearance. Effects of pre-treatment of ingredients have been extensively investigated by purpose of modification and improvement of composite characteristics. Extractable proteins from soybean and corn have also been studied as polymer matrix for making green composites. Zein, a plant protein found in corn that is widely applicable as coating agent or adhesive, is an example that has fulfilled experiments for making particle boards. Further similar experiences have been carried out on making composites from wood or bamboo sawdust or fibers with soybean proteins. The more common objectives through the above mentioned researches have been to find the best mixing ratios, the most effective coupling agents and/or modifiers, the optimum operational parameters in manufacturing processes, the qualitative measures such as tensile strength, bending strength, internal bond, modulus of elasticity, water absorption, thickness swelling, density and porosity. This chapter reviews technical and scientific attempts on making composites from bamboo wastes and various matrices and coupling agents especially those which have been performed in Zhejiang University and academic organizations cooperating with.

Abstract:4,4′-(1,3-Dipropyl-tetramethyldisiloxane)bis-2-methoxyphenol (SIE), a novel silicone-contained biphenol type monomer, is synthesized from eugenol and 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane, and used to modify phenolic novolac through copolymerization with phenol and formaldehyde to yield SIE-modified resins (SPNs). Then, the SPNs are used as resin matrix, while surface-treated chopped sisal fiber is used as the reinforced filler to produce the novel phenolic molding composites. Eugenol and sisal are biobased renewable materials. Due to modification of SIE, the ultimate composites expressed excellent electrical resistance, low water absorption and high thermal stability compared to the normal composites. Our work provides a facile and effective way to prepare the silicone modified, biofiber-reinforced phenolic composites with improved water resistance and electric property.

Abstract:With the widening of the application fields of phenolic resins, many types of modifiers have been used to modify the molecular structure of phenolic resins. In recent years, more and more researchers have focused on the discussion of the properties of modified phenolic resins and gradually ignored the research on the synthesis processes that can affect the molecular structure and properties of phenolic resins. This review covers the synthesis processes used to prepare chemically modified phenolic resins and classifies and summarizes them. The types of modifiers, the timing in adding modifiers, and the advantages and disadvantages of different synthesis processes are considered. A possible synthesis process strategy for the preparation of different modified phenolic resins is provided, and this has a certain guiding significance for the research on high-performance phenolic resins.

Abstract:Key technical issues including the selection of base re sin, the control of curing reaction and cured structure, and the dispersing of g lass fiber fillers in the preparation of glass fiber reinforced phenolic injecti on molding materials were studied. Differences in the formed structure and morp hology and curing rheological properties of phenolic injection molding materials prepared with different types of base resins were also investigated.By using bl end resins of resol and novolac as base materials, optimizing raw materials form ulation and preparation technology,a new kind of glass fiber reinforced phenolic injection molding material was obtained.The new material showed excellent mecha nical properties, heat resistance and good flame retardant as well as suitable i njection properties. Its Charpy notch impact strength was 4.3 kJ·m-2, f lexural strength was 137.4 MPa, heat distortion temperature was 245 ℃ and flam e retardant properties passed the attestation of UL 94 V-0. In addition, it sh owed good dimension stability, insulation properties and had lower-cost advanta ge.

Abstract:Molecular composites are polymeric composites with rigid-rod macromolecules as the reinforcing agent and flexible polymers as the matrix.It has been demonstrated that when phase separation is prevented and the rigid-rod macromolecules are uniformly dispersed in the flexible polymers,the mechanical properties and some other physical properties are remarkably increased.Different from traditional fiber-reinforced composites with inorganic micrometer-sized fibers as the reinforcing agent,the molecular composites have relatively low viscosity,can be more easily processed and show both low density and high mechanical properties.The major problem for the preparation of molecular composites is to disperse the rigid-rod macromolecules in the form of single molecules in the flexible matrics,however,due to the unfavorable enthalpy of mixing,phase separation usually happens.This article reviews the methods preventing the occurence of phase separation in the preparation of molecular composites that have been developed in the last three decades.

Abstract:The PP/bamboo fiber composites were prepared by mixing-injection molding process with bamboo fiber as reinforced material.The surface morphology,thermal properties and chemical structure of the composites were tested and characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) and infrared spectrometer(FTIR).The results show that: the mechanical properties and thermal properties of composites are improved with bamboo fiber modified by alkali and coupling agent.The interfacial compatibility of composites improves and the interface bonding force increase with the adding of coupling agent.The mechanical properties of composites are better with coupling agent KH-550 2%.The break elongation is 14.5%,tensile strength is 30.48 MPa and the impact strength is 22.4 kJ/m2。

Abstract:The use of biomass in phenolic resin can not only improve performance and reduce costs but can also reduce pollution and protect the environment. Lignin is a biopolymer with a three-dimensional network structure formed by three phenylpropane units of p-hydroxyphenyl, guaiacyl, and syringyl connected by an ether bond and carbon–carbon bond, containing a large amount of phenol or an aldehyde structure unit. It is an effective way to improve the economy, protect the environment, and reproduce the resin via the synthesis of high-performance biophenolic resin polymer materials by modification or depolymerization of lignin. This review describes the latest developments in the preparation of phenolic resins by modification or depolymerization of lignin, focusing on the modification of its original functional groups by phenolization, demethylation, and hydroxymethylation, as well as chemical depolymerization methods. The properties of thermosetting or thermoplastic phenolic resins as prepared by different lignin modification methods are compared, and the future research directions for the synthesis of biomass-based phenolic resins are prospected.

Abstract:Phenolic resins occupy an important position in industrial applications, but phenol, one of the raw materials for synthesis, is a non-renewable resource. Lignin, as a natural polymer containing phenolic hydroxyl groups, alcohol hydroxyl groups and other reactive groups, can replace some of the phenol in the synthesis of phenolic resins, which can reduce the amount of phenol, thus reducing the cost of phenolic resins, while effectively promoting the high value-added use of renewable biomass resources. Due to its low reactivity, alkaline lignin is usually discharged as production waste, unaware that lignin macromolecules can be modified. In this paper, the phenolic monomers were obtained by acid-catalyzed depolymerization of DES (choline chloride/p-toluenesulfonic acid or choline chloride/lactic acid) from waste alkaline lignin, and the recovery rate of the DES solution during the catalytic treatment was more than 85 %, in which the main monomer was 2-methoxy-4-(1-propyl) phenol. The degradation of alkaline lignin is still favorable after five times of DES solvent recovery. The depolymerized lignin monomer replaced phenol by 50 wt% and then ternary co-polymerized with phenol and formaldehyde to form a biomass phenol-based phenolic resin, providing a green route for phenolic resin production. The cost of resin preparation was economically calculated, and it was found that the cost of resin after accumulating 4 cycles of DES treatment was only 51.1 % of that of pure phenolic resin. The density functional theory (DFT) was used to simulate the possible radical reactions in the intermediate process of phenolic resin reaction, to explore the microscopic mechanism and competition, to provide theoretical reference for further experimental realization of resin structure control and optimization, and to improve the theoretical system of resin synthesis.

Abstract:The multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWNTs) is easy dispersing in the phenol resin because of a great number of phenyl groups and hydroxy groups in the phenol resin.In addition,MWNTs adsorb the phenol resin and regulate the resin structure to be more regular during crosslinking and forming char.The char of MWNTs/phenol resin composites is increased by adding a small quantity of MWNTs.

Abstract:By increasing the environmental concerns and depletion of petroleum resources, bio-based resins have gained interest. Recently, lignin, vanillin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde), and divanillin (6,6′-dihydroxy-5,5′-dimethoxybiphenyl-3,3′-dicarbaldehyde)-based resins have attracted attention due to the low cost, environmental benefits, good thermal stability, excellent mechanical properties, and suitability for high-performance natural fiber composite applications. This review highlights the recent use of lignin, vanillin, and divanillin-based resins with natural fiber composites and their synthesized processes. Finally, discussions are made on the curing kinetics, mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and bio-based resins’ adhesion property.

Abstract:Phenolic resin/expanded graphite (EG) composites were synthesized via in situ condensation polymerization of the monomers in the presence of foliated graphite. SEM observation showed that the graphite flakes were well dispersed in the phenolic resin matrix. The electrical conductivity of the composites was investigated as a function of the foliated graphite fraction. The composites containing graphite sheets exhibited an electrical conductivity percolation threshold with 3.2wt% graphite content in polymer matrix. Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) measurements were carried out to characterize the surface of the foliated graphite before and after condensation polymerization of phenolic resin using a series of both non-polar and polar acid–base probe gases. The data obtained indicated that the character of graphite surface changed after the polymerization of phenolic resin. The dispersive component of surface free energy decreased greatly. Before polymerization the graphite surface is predominantly acidic while the surface turns to basic after polymerization. The increased polarity of surface contributed to the stronger interactions between graphite and phenolic resin and the fine dispersion of expanded graphite in the matrix, and resulted in the low conductivity percolation threshold.

Abstract:In recent years, growing consideration of the concepts of ecological sustainability, environmentally friendly, recyclability, non-toxicity and biodegradability towards a green environment, have led scientists to focus on the utilization of natural fibers as green reinforcing agents for improving thermal, physical, and mechanical characteristics of composites. In this way, cellulose and lignin (nano) materials are receiving global attention due to their unique and potentially useful features, containing abundance, renewability, low cost, excellent physical-mechanical properties, environmental friendliness, and low weight. Therefore, this research, addressed a survey of the literature on extending the performance of phenol-formaldehyde (phenolic) composites reinforced by cellulose and lignin nano materials that were explored in the last decade. Physical, mechanical behavior and thermal stability of the phenolic composites were comprehensively examined. Indeed, different types of phenolic composites modified with nanocellulose and nanolignin have been made using various advanced synthesis processes. The results were unanimous and highlighted the remarkable effect of nanocellulose and nanolignin on improving the overall performance of the fabricated composites.
