Abstract:An epoxidized phenolic adhesive was composed via introducing the epoxy group to the molecule of phenolic resin, and the optimum condition of preparing the thermoplastic phenolic resin and epoxidation reaction was gained by experiments. The performances of the product were determined and its structure characterized with IR. The shear strength of the adhesive was 28.8Mpa its gel time was 82s and it can be used under 250℃ for long term. The compounding techniques were simple and they were wished to industrialize.

Abstract:With cellulosic ethanol lignin,phenol and formaldehyde as raw material,NaOH as catalyst,the cellulose ethanol lignin modified phenolic resin adhesive was prepared,the technology of alternative lignin phenol and effect on the performance of the adhesive were studied.The study found that:when the replacement rate is 30%,cellulose ethanol lignin modified phenolic resin adhesiveu0027s bond strength can meet the requirements of national I class board;formaldehyde release can achieve E_0 level,and with low cost,good bonding strength,low toxicity,environmental protection,it can be widely used in preparation of outdoor wood-based panel.

Abstract:Replacing petroleum‐based chemicals with biomass‐based alternatives is becoming more and more important for the development of a low‐carbon economy around the world. The latest life cycle assessment displayed that partially replacing phenol with biobased lignin in the process of synthesizing phenolic resin adhesives used in wood panels industry can remarkably reduce carbon emissions and negative environmental impact. The macromolecular structure of lignin is similar to that of phenolic resin and the basic structure unit is similar to that of the phenol, thus endowing it with the potential to substitute phenol and reduce the release of formaldehyde in the preparation process of phenolic resin. Importantly, the lignin‐based adhesive exhibits improved performance and reduced cost compared with the petroleum‐based adhesive due to the reduced adding amount of petroleum‐based volatile components. However, the intrinsic large steric hindrance, structural heterogeneity, and low activity of the natural lignin limit its further application in the adhesive. Many researchers have developed the activation methods such as physical modification, chemical modification, and biological modification to overcome these issues. The different modification of the lignin and their application in the adhesive area are mainly summarized here. Besides, the modification methods and the curing mechanism are also discussed. The different modifications of lignin and their application in adhesives are summarized here. On the basis of summarizing structural characteristics of lignin and the life cycle assessment of lignin phenol‐formaldehyde (LPF) adhesives, research gaps and outlooks are elucidated to brighten LPF's future.

Abstract:The hydrogen on C4 and C6 is very active because the electronic effect of hydroxyl and the conjugated balance on benzene ring of resorcinol,which two phenolic hydroxyls had the electron donating function.The electrophilic substitution reaction was easily happened because the above two phenolic hydroxyls can stabilize the formed complex.Therefore,resorcinol is widely used in modified wood adhesives.The modification mechanism of resorcinol,the research and application of resorcinol modified some adhesives[such as UF (urea formaldehyde resin),PF (phenolic resin),and starch adhesives] at home and abroad were summarized.And the research circumstance of above adhesives was analyzed,and their development direction was expected.

Abstract:By using only glyoxal instead of formaldehyde to prepare environment-friendly amino resin for wood adhesives is a hot topic in the wood industry. However, the existing reports on UG resin present a poor bonding performance, and especially an almost complete absence of water resistance. Thus, to explore new synthetic processes to prepare UG resins with good water resistance is a work of considerable interest. In this work a novel formulation is developed by reacting hexamethylene diamine (H) and urea (U) via first deamination and then polymerization with glyoxal (G) to obtain HUGs green resins. These resins were used to prepare well bonded wood panels. The effect of different H/U ratios on resin performance was also investigated. At a H/U molar ratio of 1, the HUG resin presents the best performance, dry strength, 24 h wet strength, and 63 degrees C hot water soaking wet strength of the plywood bonded with it, these being respectively 1.18 MPa, 1.70 MPa, 0.92 MPa respectively. This means that the HUG resin has potential as an industrial adhesive to replace urea-formaldehyde or melamine-urea- formaldehyde resins in the production of wood composites.

Abstract:Using non-toxic, low-volatile glyoxal to completely replace formaldehyde for preparing urea-glyoxal (UG) resin adhesive is a hot research topic that could be of great interest for the wood industry. However, urea-glyoxal (UG) resins prepared by just using glyoxal instead of formaldehyde usually yields a lower degree of polymerization. This results in a poorer bonding performance and water resistance of UG resins. A good solution is to pre-react urea to preform polyurea molecules presenting already a certain degree of polymerization, and then to condense these with glyoxal to obtain a novel UG resin. Therefore, in this present work, the urea was reacted with hexamethylene diamine to form a polyurea named HU, and then this was used to react it with different amounts of glyoxal to synthesize hexamethylenediamine-urea-glyoxal (HUG) polycondensation resins, and to use this for bonding plywood. The results show that the glyoxal can well react with HU polyuria via addition and schiff base reaction, and also the HUG resin exhibits excellent bonding strength and water resistance. The shear strength of the plywood bonded with this HUG at 160°C hot press temperature as high as 1.93 MPa, 2.16 MPa and 1.61 MPa, respectively, which meets the requirement of the China national standard GB/T 9846-2015 (≥0.7 MPa), and can be a good choice as a wood adhesive for industrial application.

Abstract:Recently, formaldehyde-free environment-friendly bio-based wood adhesives have been a hot research topic in the wood industry. Glucose is a widely sourced biomass material, presenting also good reactivity, which has made it a focus of cutting-edge research. In the work presented here, a new formulation was developed for preparing a glucose-based biomass adhesive with excellent bonding strength and water resistance. Glucose was oxidized by sodium periodate at room temperature to generate bioaldehydes (OG), which were then reacted with a polyurea (HU) synthesized by reaction of hexamethylene diamine (HMD) with urea (U) via deamination. This resulted in an environmentally friendly green glucose-based adhesive (OGHU resin) containing neither formaldehyde nor other toxic volatile aldehydes. The effect of the mass ratio of HU/OG on the resin properties was investigated. The results showed that the OGHU resin imparted to the plywood bonded with excellent bonding strength and water resistance. The dry shear strength, 24 h cold water soaking wet strength, 3 h hot water (63 degrees C) wet strength, and 3 h boiling water wet strength were as high as 1.48 1.16, 1.26, and 1.12 MPa, respectively. Its superior bonding performance exceeded the expectations of the GB/T 9846-2015 standard (>= 0.7 MPa) sufficiently to be considered as a substitute for the currently used urea-formaldehyde wood panel adhesives.

Abstract:In this paper,two types of modification methods to improve the ablative resistance of phenolic resin were reviewed,i.e.,inorganic element and structural modifications.The inorganic element modification involved the introduction of boron or molybdenum elements,with the latter being more effective.The structure modification included the attachment of aryl phenol,benzoxazine,maleimide,cyano,or alkynyl groups.The synthesis and ablative resistance of the structurally modified phenolic resins were summarized.These groups could generally improve the ablative resistance,however,the alkynyl group may result in higher curing temperature and was seldom employed.

Abstract:As the second most abundant biopolymer, lignin remains underutilized in various industrial applications. Various forms of lignin generated from different methods affect its physical and chemical properties to a certain extent. To promote the broader commercial utilization of currently available industrial lignins, lignin sulfonate (SL), kraft lignin (KL), and organosolv lignin (OL) are utilized to partially replace phenol in the synthesis of phenol formaldehyde (PF) adhesives. The impact of lignin production process on the effectiveness of lignin-based phenolic (LPF) adhesives is examined based on the structural analysis of the selected industrial lignin. The results show that OL has more phenolic hydroxyl groups, lower molecular weight, and greater number of reactive sites than the other two types of lignins. The maximum replacement rate of phenol by OL reaches 70% w/w, resulting in organosolv lignin phenolic (OLPF) adhesives with a viscosity of 960 mPa center dot s, a minimal free formaldehyde content of 0.157%, and a shear strength of 1.84 MPa. It exhibits better performance compared with the other two types of lignin-based adhesives and meets the requirements of national standards. The maximum replacement rates of phenol by SL, KL, and OL are 30%, 40%, and 70%, respectively. The LPF adhesives show excellent thermal stability than PF adhesive without lignin. The LPF adhesives, even for OLPF-70% with a high phenol substitution rate, show good adhesion to three-layer plywood, and the incorporation of lignin significantly increases the shear strength of phenolic adhesives. image

Abstract:Phenolic resins (PR) are being widely used in many fields such as molding plastics, foams, coatings, and semiconductor packaging owing to their good properties including corrosion resistance, heat resistance, flame resistance, and electrical insulation properties. However, the traditional phenolic resins industry depends very heavily on petroleum as a source of phenol raw material, which is under the influence of petroleum reserves. In recent years, many studies have been conducted to develop cheap, abundant, renewable, and high-performance alternatives to phenol for the production of PR. Lignin, as the most abundant natural polyphenol, has similar chemical structures to that of phenol. Lignin has received increasing attention as a potential feedstock for renewable fuels and chemical production. The substitution of lignin for phenol can not only reduce the costs of PR but also increase their performance such as low toxic residues and environmental friendliness. This paper reviews the recent progress in lignin activation and modification for the lignin-based phenolic rein (LPR) synthesis, highlights the different lignin modification methods, compares the performance of different LPR products, and summarizes their applications in adhesive, foam, molding powder, micro/nano-spheres, and other advanced materials. Finally, this review puts forward the current challenges and potential future prospects for LPR materials.

Abstract:When thermoplastic resins such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are selected as wood adhesives to bond wood particles (fibers, chips, veneers) by using the hot-pressing technique, the formaldehyde emission issue that has long existed in the wood-based panel industry can be effectively solved. In this study, in general, thermoplastic-bonded wood-based panels presented relatively higher mechanical properties and better water resistance and machinability than the conventional urea–formaldehyde resin-bonded wood-based panels. However, the bonding structure of the wood and thermoplastic materials was unstable at high temperatures. Compared with the wood–plastic composites manufactured by the extruding or injection molding methods, thermoplastic-bonded wood-based panels have the advantages of larger size, a wider raw material range and higher production efficiency. The processing technology, bonding mechanism and the performance of thermoplastic-bonded wood-based panels are comprehensively summarized and reviewed in this paper. Meanwhile, the existing problems of this new kind of panel and their future development trends are also highlighted, which can provide the wood industry with foundations and guidelines for using thermoplastics as environmentally friendly adhesives and effectively solving indoor pollution problems.

Abstract:The development of wood adhesives that exhibit robust adhesion, exceptional water resistance, sustainability, affordability, nontoxicity, and simplicity is highly recommended for practical applications. In this study, the structure of microcrystalline cellulose was successfully modified with dialdehyde groups based on previous reports. Aromatic polyamines and urea were polymerized into phenyl-polyurea (Ph-U) through fusion and condensation, without the use of catalysts or solvents. The DAC-Ph-U adhesives were synthesized through the reaction between dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) and Ph-U under ambient conditions. Reinforcing and cross-linking effects of Ph-U on its properties were systematically investigated. The mechanical, adhesive, and water repellent properties were enhanced through the introduction of aldehyde (from DAC) and amino group (from Ph-U) interactions into the cross-linking structure with Schiff base cross-linking. The interaction of covalent (C=N) and multiple non-covalent bonds in the cross-linked system functions as a hydrophobic barrier, impeding water infiltration into the bonding interface. The bonding strength test revealed that the optimal strength of DAC-Ph-U adhesives reached 2.91 MPa (dry strength), 1.96 MPa (after 63 °C water immersion), and 1.75 MPa (after burning water immersion), respectively. Its comprehensive properties were not only superior to traditional formaldehyde-based resin adhesives but also far higher than the requirements of industrial wood-based panels. This study provides ideas for replacing fossil aldehydes such as formaldehyde, glyoxal, glutaraldehyde, etc. in wood adhesive fields and can be potentially generalized to reinforce the performance of biocomposites, coatings, plastics, hydrogels, etc.
