Abstract:The heat dissipation capacity and mechanical reliability of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramic substrates determine the service life of power devices. In this work, a two-step sintering method was designed to produce Si3N4 ceramics with excellent performance using Si and α-Si3N4 powders with different ratios as raw materials. The nitridation mechanism and the microstructural evolution mechanism were clarified. The in-situ-generated β-Si3N4 seeds regulated the microstructure of the post-sintered Si3N4 ceramics. The introduction of Si powder reduced the content of oxygen impurities and regulated the microstructure of Si3N4 ceramics, thereby improving thermal conductivity while maintaining excellent mechanical properties. When the mass ratio of Si powder nitridation to α-Si3N4 was 0.75, its thermal conductivity was 120W·m-1·K-1, fracture toughness was 11.92±0.36MPa·m1/2, and bending strength was 712±20.6MPa. This study provides a strategy to reduce the introduction of oxygen impurities while optimizing the microstructure to prepare Si3N4 ceramics with excellent performance.

Abstract:Porous SiC ceramics with three different pore sizes (∼7, ∼45, and ∼98 μm) and two different porosities (∼54% and ∼63%) were prepared to investigate the effects of pore size on electrical and thermal properties of the porous ceramics. With an increase in pore size from ∼7 to ∼98 μm at the same porosity (∼54%), the electrical and thermal conductivities of the porous ceramics increased from ∼1.01 to ∼2.30 Ω−1·cm−1 and ∼14.3 to ∼26.2 W·m−1K−1, respectively. Similar trends have been obtained in the ceramics with ∼63% porosity. The porous SiC ceramic with larger pore size has smaller pore/strut interface area at the same porosity, which leads to less carrier scattering and phonon‐pore scattering at the pore/strut interfaces, resulting in higher electrical and thermal conductivities, respectively. These results suggest that the electrical and thermal properties of porous SiC ceramics can be successfully tuned by adjusting the pore size and porosity depending on the application.

Abstract:The porous SiC-Mullite porous ceramics with different pore size were prepared by SiC particles, kaolin, Al(OH)3, and flake graphite, V2O5 and AlF3 were used as mineralizers, the pore size was controllable by adjusting the size of flake graphite. Then the improved empirical formula and grey theory were used to study the effect of the change in pore size on the material properties. The results showed that with the increase of mean pore size from 1.1 μm to 8.5 μm, the cold modulus of rupture and cold crushing strength decreased by 20.8 MPa and 13.7 MPa, respectively. And the thermal conductivity increased from 1.213 W m−1 K−1 to 1.721 W m−1 K−1 at 800 °C. The <5 μm pores were helped enhance the strength and decreased the thermal conductivity.

Abstract:The effects of solid solution, grain size and porosity on the thermal conductivity of aluminum (Al)- and boron (B)-added porous SiC ceramics with in-situ grain growth were investigated. Al-added porous SiC ceramics showed higher porosity, higher solubility of Al in SiC lattice, and lower thermal conductivity with the range of 8.5 – 18.2 W/m•K. The higher solubility of Al in SiC lattice was considered as the reason of their low thermal conductivity. B-added porous SiC ceramics have lower porosity, lower solubility of B in SiC lattice, and higher thermal conductivity with the range of 30.6 – 79.0 W/m•K. The high thermal conductivity of B-added porous SiC ceramics would result from the low solubility of B in SiC lattice and the low porosity. The effect of grain size was found to increase the phonon mean free path for B-added SiC ceramics.

Abstract:Porous SiC ceramics have recently attracted wide attention for their applications in the electrically heatable filter. Further improvement of the thermal and electrical conductivity without sacrificing permeability is a critical parameter for such applications. In the present work, porous SiC/Ti3SiC2 ceramic composites with Ti3SiC2 and micro/nano SiC have been prepared from TiC/Si/alpha-SiC mixtures at a low sintering temperature (1400 degrees C). Nano-laminated Ti3SiC2 enhanced the electrical conductivity, while the good thermal conductivity was achieved through in-situ formed nano beta-SiC and raw coarse alpha-SiC in the porous ceramics. Along with the increase of initial alpha-SiC particle size from 0.76 to 16.13 mu m, the permeability, thermal and electrical conductivity improved due to the decreased porosity and increased pore size in porous SiC/Ti3SiC2 ceramics. The results suggested that the decoupling of the electrical conductivity from the thermal conductivity could be tuned by adjusting the initial alpha-SiC particle size.

Abstract:Porous SiC ceramic were prepared with silicon carbide powder as the aggregate, silicone resin as the binder and pore agent by the process of mixing, iso-static pressure molding, and calcination. The mechanical properties and microstructures of the samples were characterized with a universal testing machine, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and mercury injection. Two main factors, molding pressures and silicone resin mass ratio were studied in the experiments. The thermal conductivity of the samples was tested. The compressive strength was up to 19.4 MPa, and the porosities up to 30%. The thermal conductivities, mainly influenced by porosities, increased from 0.68 W.m-1.K-1 to 1.03 W.m-1.K-1 with the porosity decreasing from 41.96% to 31.30%.

Abstract:The effects of aluminum compound additive on the thermoelectric properties of α-SiC ceramics were studied. Porous SiC ceramics with 50–60% relative density were fabricated by sintering the pressed α-SiC powder compacts with AlN and/or Al4C3 at 2150°C for 3 h in Ar atmosphere. The sintered bodies were analyzed by means of XRD, SEM, and TEM. The lattice parameter measurements revealed incorporation of a certain amount of added Al and/or N into the SiC lattice. 6H to 4H reverse phase transformation occurred during sintering. The Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity were measured at 550–950°C in Ar and/or vacuum atmosphere. The kind of additives and the amount of addition had significant effects on the thermoelectric properties. The thermoelectric figure of merit of aluminum compound-doped SiC increased with increasing temperature and was lower than that of n-type SiC. On the whole, AlN-doped SiC had higher figure of merit than Al4C3-doped SiC.

Abstract:3D C-f/SiC-Al composites were achieved through the pressure infiltration of liquid Al-Si alloy into porous 3D C-f/SiC preform, which was produced by different cycles of precursor infiltration and pyrolysis. The effect of silicon carbide volume fraction on the microstructure, anisotropic mechanical response, and thermophysical characteristics of the 3D C-f/SiC-Al composites was investigated. The results demonstrated that the initial microstructure of 3D C-f/SiC can be retained, and the obtained C-f/SiC-Al composites presented remarkable anisotropy characteristics. As the silicon carbide ceramics content increased from 12.5 vol% to 41.8 vol%, the thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of 3D C-f/SiC-Al composites decreased, whereas the bending strength initially increased and then decreased in the Z-direction. The bending strength perpendicular (Z) to the carbon cloth layer of 3D C-f/SiC-Al composites was higher than that of parallel (X-Y) to the carbon cloth layer. However, a significant anisotropy in the thermal conductivity values was the opposite. The 3D C-f/SiC-Al composite with low ceramic content (17 vol%) had a higher thermal conductivity in the X-Y direction (64 W m(-1) K-1) than in the Z-direction (34 W m(-1) K-1). The thermal expansion coefficient of all the 3D C-f/SiC-Al composites along the X-Y direction also decreased initially and then increased in the range of 100-450 degrees C, which presents low expansion characteristics.
Tailoring the thermophysical properties of porous SiC framework reinforced Al-Mg-Si composites by Si alloying content for thermal energy management

Abstract:SiC/Al composite is a promising thermal energy management material. However, promoting the thermal conductivity (TC) and decreasing the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of SiC/Al composite simultaneously is a big challenge. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) porous SiC ceramic framework reinforced Al-Mg-Si alloy composites were prepared by spontaneous infiltration. The effects of Si alloying content on the phase composition, microstructure and themophysical properties of the composites were investigated. The results indicate that the increase of Si alloying content can not only inhibit the formation of Al4C3 effectively, but also increase the concentrations and particle sizes of second phases including Mg2Si and Si in infiltrated Al alloy. Consequently, the themophysical properties of the composites can be tailored by the Si alloying content. The composite with Si alloying content of 12 wt.% exhibits the superior themophysical properties with TC of 176.3 W∙m−1∙K−1 and CTE of 9.12 × 10−6 K−1.

Abstract:The porous SiC ceramics were fabricated by gel-casting and pressureless sintering process in air atmosphere with a solid loading of 10% slurry constituting of tert-butyl alcohol,acrylamide,SiC powder and sintering additives.The effects of two kinds of sintering additives,Al2O3 and Al2O3+SiO2,on the porosity,microstructure and mechanical properties of the porous SiC ceramics were studied.The results show that the sintering additive of Al2O3+SiO2 obviously improves the sinterability of SiC ceramics,and compared with that only using Al2O3 as sintering additive,both sintering temperature of SiC specimen and formation temperature of mullite phase are decreased by about 50 ℃.The median pore diameter of the porous SiC ceramics is about 2 μm and presents single peak distribution.The compressive strength of the porous SiC ceramics increases with increasing the sintering temperature,whereas the porosity has little change.Using Al2O3+SiO2 as sintering additive,the porosity and compressive strength of SiC porous ceramics sintered at 1 400 ℃ reach 70.57% and 17.74 MPa,respectively.
The effect of silicon addition on thermoelectric properties of a B4C ceramic

Abstract:A B4C ceramic doped with 0.2 at% Si is prepared via hot pressing. The composition and microstructure of the ceramic are characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the ceramic samples are measured from room temperature up to 1500 K. The electrical conductivity increases with temperature; the Seebeck coefficient also increases with temperature and rises to a value of about 320 μV K−1 at 1500 K. The value of the figure of merit of 0.2 at% Si-doped B4C is higher than that of undoped B4C and rises to about 1×10−4 K−1 at 1500 K. The reason for enhancement in the figure of merit of Si-doped B4C is discussed.

Abstract:In pursuit of high thermal conductivity of SiC ceramics, this article reports the effects of AlN and sintering atmospheres on the thermal properties and microstructure evolution of SiC ceramics. Dense SiC ceramics with different contents of AlN additive were fabricated through hot-press sintering at 1950°C in Ar/N 2 atmosphere under a pressure of 40 MPa for 3 h. The results showed that the thermal conductivity of samples without AlN addition was 53.5 W.m −1 .K −1 when sintered in Ar and 50.3 W.m −1 .K −1 when sintered in N 2 . The SiC ceramics with 4 wt% AlN sintered in Ar showed abnormally large grains and exhibited the highest thermal conductivity of 121.7 W.m −1 .K −1 among all the samples. The sample with 2 wt% AlN sintered in N 2 exhibited a thermal conductivity of 108.6 W.m −1 .K −1 ; the thermal conductivity deceased with the increasing AlN content afterwards. Such a decreasing trend of thermal conductivity was attributed to the ascending 2H ss content and smaller grains of ceramics. There existed an optimal content of AlN and a proper sintering atmosphere for perfecting the microstructure and the thermal conductivity of SiC ceramics. GRAPHICAL

Abstract:Porous ZrB2-SiC (ZS) ceramics with different volume fractions of porosity, i.e. 8.7%, 17.9% and 27.3% and different mean pore diameter, i.e. 2.21, 3.65 and 4.23 mu m, were fabricated using partial hot pressing, in order to investigate the effect of the porosity and pore size on their mechanical and thermal properties as well as thermal shock performance. Particular emphasis was placed in the study on thermal shock fracture resistance. The critical temperature difference, Delta T-c, of porous ZS herein was found to increase slightly with increasing porosity. This phenomenon is inconsistent with most previous researches on other material systems. However, it was well explained from the viewpoints of both physical properties and microstructures of the material, which provides new perspectives and a deeper understanding of how porosity and pore-size affect Delta T-c. The Delta T-c was also observed to increase as pore size decrease. It could tailor the thermal shock resistance of ZS ceramic and obtain porous ZS ceramic with both high thermal shock fracture resistance and high thermal shock damage resistance, using the above porosity and pore-size dependence of physical properties. Abstract:The effects of sintering additives on the thermoelectric properties of SiC ceramics were studied. Porous SiC ceramics with -60% relative density were fabricated by sintering the pressed β-SiC powder compacts with additives (B, AlN) at 1900°-2100°C for 0.5-5h in nitrogen atmosphere. The sintered bodies were analyzed by means of XRD and SEM. In the case of B addition, XRD analysis showed that little phase transformation occurred during sintering and that BN was formed by the reaction with N2. Lattice parameter measurements revealed incorporation of a certain amount of added B into the β-SiC lattice. On the other hand, in the case of 10wt% AlN addition, XRD and SEM analyses showed a phase transformation of β-SiC to mainly 4 H-SiC during sintering. The electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient were measured at 350°-1050°C in argon atmosphere. The average grain size and the quantity of additives had significant effects on the thermoelectric properties of SiC.

Abstract:Near zero thermal expansion porous ceramics were fabricated by using SiC and LiAlSiO4 as positive and negative thermal expansion materials, respectively, bonded by glassy material. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal expansion behavior of LAS/SiC porous ceramics with different particle sizes of LiAlSiO4 were investigated. The results indicated that the coefficient of thermal expansion of the LAS/SiC porous ceramics decreased from 0.5206×10−6 to −1.1053×10−6K−1 with increasing the LiAlSiO4 particle size from ~45µm to ~125μm. It was attributed to the reduction in the reaction between LiAlSiO4 and SiO2 as the particle size of LiAlSiO4 increased. Young’s modulus increased from 36MPa to 54MPa as the sintering temperature increased from 850°C to 950°C because of the good bonding between the SiC grains and the glass materials.
Effect of SiC Particle's Morphology on Thermal Conductivity and Thermal Expansion Properties of SiCp/Al Composites

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of morphology of SiC particles on the thermal conductivity,the sharp edge of the coarse SiC particles was polished by water jet Saw,SiCp/Al composites with 67％ volume fraction of SiC particles was fabricated by pressure infiltrating.Meanwhile the thermal conductivity and the coefficient of thermal expansion was predicted by the different effective medium (DEM),Kemer,Tumer analysis and 2D finite element molding (FEM) respectively.The prediction results show that the 2D FEM results match the experiment results perfectly.The comparison between the 2D FEM results and experimental results shows that the thermal conductivity and the coefficient of thermal expansion are affected by the morphology of SiC particles.The thermal conductivity of SiCp/Al composites with lower ratio of coarse particles is higher than that with higher ratio of coarse particles,meanwhile the thermal conductivity and the coefficient of thermal expansion of SiCdAl composites with lower ratio of coarse particles has small fluctuation,conversely the thermal conductivity and the coefficient of thermal expansion of SiCp/Al composites with higher ratio of coarse particles has large fluctuation.

Abstract:The porous TiC ceramics with different porosity were fabricated by hot-press sintering using CaO as pore-forming agent, which opened a new field to explore pore ceramics. Then a serious of porous TiC were fabricated and investigated the microstructure, porosity and mechanical properties of pore TiC. The porosity and bulk density of TiC depend on CaO content, which significantly affects the microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behaviors. With the CaO content increasing, the porosity and pore size of TiC are increased, while the bulk density is decreased. Compressive strength and specific compressive strength exhibit a trend of monotone variation, and the maximum compressive strength is 51.3 MPa when CaO content is 40 vol%. A high porosity condition leads to a loose structure with low load-bearing capacity. As CaO content increases from 40vol% to 55vol%, porosity of TiC increases from 32.9 to 52.6%, and the compressive strength of porous TiC decreases from 51.3 MPa to 9.7 MPa. Additionally, it was concluded that porosity determine the bulk density and strength of porous TiC. However, the thermal conductivity of pore TiC increases with rising of porosity. This is attributed to the total number of pores is decrease owing to CaO agglomeration.

Abstract:In this study, porous silicon carbide ceramics were prepared by using silicon carbide as the main material and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the pore-forming agent. SiO2-Y2O3-Al2O3 and SiO2-kaolin were used as the builders respectively. This study is about the effect of SiO2-Y2O3-Al2O3 and SiO2-kaolin content on the structure and mechanical properties of porous silicon carbide. SiO2-Y2O3-Al2O3 and SiO2-kaolin affect the porosity, hardness and flexural strength of silicon carbide porous ceramics. In this experiment, the porosity of porous ceramics was measured by Archimedes method. The hardness was measured by Rockwell hardness tester. The flexural strength was measured by universal testing machine. The results show that the properties of silicon carbide porous ceramics prepared by SiO2-Y2O3-Al2O3 are better than that of SiO2-kaolinite when the SiO2 -Y2O3-Al2O3 content is 20%. With SiO2-Y2O3-Al2O3 as the combustion agent, porous ceramic with better performance can be prepared at 1500 °C. When the SiO2-Y2O3-Al2O3 content is 20%, the prepared silicon carbide porous ceramics has a large porosity and excellent mechanical properties, the opening porosity of 23.73%, hardness and flexural strength of 62 and 15.47MPa, from the fracture can be seen more porous and evenly distributed.

Abstract:Porous aluminium titanate ceramics with high porosity were prepared by foam-gelcasting process and pressureless sintering using alumina and titanium dioxide powder as raw material and deionized water as solvent. Microstructure and phase composition of the prepared materials were analyzed by SEM and XRD. Properties such as porosity and thermal conductivity were tested. Effects of sintering temperature on phase composition, microstructure and properties of the porous aluminium titanate ceramics were researched. As the sintering temperature increases to 1550 degrees C, all peaks of the diffraction pattern can not be indexed except that of taluminium titanate. With the increasing of sintering temperature to between 1400 and 1600 degrees C, linear shrinkage of porous aluminium titanate changes little, open porosity varies between 68.6% and 73.9% and thermal conductivity changes from 0.24 to 0.37 W.(m-K)(-1).

Abstract:High dense Al4SiC4–SiC ceramic composites with different SiC contents were hot pressed using self-synthesized Al4SiC4 and commercial SiC powders without any sintering additives. The effect of SiC contents on the densification, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Al4SiC4-based ceramics was investigated. The anisotropic growth of Al4SiC4 grains was inhibited by the pinning effect of the introduced SiC particles, while the weakly bonded interfaces were formed due to the thermal expansion mismatch between Al4SiC4 and SiC. As a consequence, the mechanical properties of Al4SiC4-based ceramics were improved significantly. With the SiC contents increasing from 0 to 30 wt%, the flexural strength increased from 314 ± 7 to 466 ± 18 MPa and the fracture toughness increased from 4.8 ± 0.4 to 7.3 ± 0.3 MPa m1/2, respectively. The flexural strengths of Al4SiC4–SiC composites at elevated temperatures were also tested under an argon atmosphere. No strength degradation of Al4SiC4–SiC composites was observed at 1200 °C and a high strength retention rate of 96.3 % at 1400 °C was obtained. The above results demonstrate the application prospects of Al4SiC4–SiC ceramics as high-temperature structural materials.
