Abstract:Calcium hydroxide,aluminium sulphate,calcium nitrate and ferrous sulphate have been applied to treating wastewater of phosphorus for 24 days in manner of 1∶1,1∶2 and excessive.The results show that max reduction ratios of phosphorus are 86.2%,91.7%,90.3% and 93.1%,respectively,but the effect of treatment fluctuates in the test period.

Abstract:Treatment of lake sediments with salts is a promising approach for preventing phosphorus release from sediments. Five 35-d treatments of undisturbed sediment cores in the East Lake, Wuhan, China were applied under anoxic conditions: nothing added (control), Al2(SO4)3 added, FeCl3 added, CaCl2 added, and NaNO3 added. To identify changes in the P binding sites in the sediment caused by the treatments, different P binding forms were extracted from the sediment before and after the treatments. We found that the mean P release rates for anoxic treatments with Al2(SO4)3, FeCl3, CaCl2 and NaNO3 were −0.6, 0.03, 0.6 and 2.6 mg/(m2·d), respectively, while the P release rate with no additives was 7.3 mg/(m2·d). In suboxic conditions, the concentration of total phosphorus (TPaverage 657 mg/kg) in sediment was much lower than that of untreated sediment (TPaverage 688 mg/kg) and treatments with salts (TP(Al2(SO4)3) 793 mg/kg, TP(FeCl3) 781 mg/kg, TP(NaNO3) 802 mg/kg, TP(CaCl2) 747 mg/kg). We also found that adding CaCl2 prevented P release because of apatite formation and because PCa (Ca bound P) increased at the sediment surface. Addition of Fe3+ and NO3− to the sediment increased the amounts of PFe, Mn (Redox-sensitive P, mostly Fe and Mn compounds), since iron oxide has the ability to combine P. Addition of Al2(SO4)3 increased the fraction of PAl, Fe (P bound to metal oxides (Al, Fe)) and decreased the P and Fe in the water above the anoxic sediment, showing the greater ability of Al in binding P. The results showed that Al2(SO4)3, FeCl3, CaCl2 and NaNO3 all had an effect in controlling phosphorus release. The effect was related to the forms of phosphorus existing in the sediment before treatment and the forms resulting after adding the four reagents. The combination of Al3+ or Fe3+ with NO3− promises to be a reasonable chemical treatment for increasing the P retention capacity of sediments in eutrophic lakes. If chemical treatment is combined with bioremediation, the aim of environmental repair may be achieved.

[Effect on Different Adding Means of Calcium Peroxide to Control Phosphorus Release from Sediment].

Abstract:Calcium peroxide is applied to sediment remediation. Based on laboratory-simulated test, trend of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentration in overlying was measured after two means of calcium peroxide treatment, mixing and capping. Transformation among different phosphorus fractions in the sediments was studied to analyze the distinguished effect. The results show that SRP concentration in overlying water presents different trend after mixing and capping of calcium peroxide. SRP concentration of the former decreased at first and increased subsequently, while that of the latter kept decreasing and average release velocity of SRP was 6.077 mg/(m2 x d) and -0.879 mg/(m2 x d) respectively. The transformation of phosphorus fractions in the sediments shows that diverse change of iron-bound phosphate are deemed to cause the effect under different adding options of calcium peroxide.

Abstract:In this work, sediments were treated with calcium nitrate, aluminum sulfate, ferric sulfate, and Phoslock®, respectively. The impact of treatments on internal phosphorus release, the abundance of nitrogen cycle-related functional genes, and the growth of submerged macrophytes were investigated. All treatments reduced total phosphorus (TP) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in interstitial water, and aluminum sulfate was most efficient. Aluminum sulfate also decreased TP and SRP in overlying water. Treatments significantly changed P speciations in the sediment. Phoslock® transformed other P species into calcium-bound P. Calcium nitrate, ferric sulfate, and Phoslock® had negative influence on ammonia oxidizers, while four chemicals had positive influence on denitrifies, indicating that chemical treatment could inhibit nitrification but enhance denitrification. Aluminum sulfate had decreased chlorophyll content of the leaves of submerged macrophytes, while ferric sulfate and Phoslock® treatment would inhibit the growth of the root. Based on the results that we obtained, we emphasized that before application of chemical treatment, the effects on submerged macrophyte revegetation should be taken into consideration.

Abstract:Pollution control and phosphorus recycling have become one of focuses in the field of wastewater treatment. Both the ferric and calcium salts are effective chemical reagents for the phosphorus removal from wastewater. Based on the complex of these two chemical reagents, a novel technology was developed. The results showed that ferric and calcium had an antagonistic effect at Fe/Ca molar ratio of 1:10-1:1, but a synergistic effect at Fe/Ca molar ratio of 1:1-10:1. The strongest synergistic effect was observed at Fe/Ca molar ratio of 7:3-4:1. When the wastewater with concentration of 100 mg P/L was treated using the ferric-calcium complex as precipitant, the optimized parameters were: Fe/Ca = 2.4:1, ferric-calcium complex/phosphorous (A/P) = 1.5:1, pH = 7, fast mixing speed (FMS) = 100 rpm. Compared with the traditional technology using ferric salt as sole precipitant, the phosphorus removal technology using ferric-calcium complex cut down the dosage by 35.53%, leading to a low cost of $ 3.69/kg P; and it increased the phosphorus (P2O5) content of precipitate up to 29.77%, indicating a good potential for recycling. The phosphorus removal technology using ferric-calcium complex as precipitant provides a prospective alternative for the removal and recycling of phosphorus in wastewaters. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. STUDY ON PHOSPHOR REMOVAL FROM CITY WASTEWATER BY MAGNESIUM AND AMMONIUM SALTS

Abstract:The wastewater containing phosphorous was treated by magnesium chloride and ammonium hydrogen carbonate for solving eutrophication of water body. Results showed that the removal efficiency of phosphate phosphorous in wastewater was connected with the Magnesium Chloride dose, the stirring time and the medium pH value. The optimized conditions were that the pH was between 9.0 and 10.0, the stirring time was more than 5 min and magnesium chloride dose (the Mg2+/P mol ratios was equal to 9.0 ), the removal rate of phosphate reached more than 98% for simulated wastewater. Magnesium chloride was used as chemical precipitation regent to treat the city life wastewater, in which the concentration of phosphorous was between 3.2 mg·L-1 and 6.6 mg·L-1, the results showed that the concentration of phosphate phosphorous of wastewater was reducing to less than 1.0 mg·L-1 after being treated.
Study on Supplemental Chemical Phosphorus Removal from Municipal Wastewater with Low Carbon and High Nitrogen and Phosphorus

Abstract:The process of biological nitrogen removal and supplemental chemical phosphorus removal can be used to treat municipal wastewater with low carbon and high nitrogen and phosphorus to satisfy the discharge standards for both nitrogen and phosphorus.Polyferric silicate was used as coagulant and dosed into the bioreactor. The results show that when the dosage is 12 mg/L(as Fe),the effluent TP concentration is less than 0.5 mg/L,which achieves the class Ⅰ-A criteria specified in Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant(GB 18918-2002).There is a linear relation between the effluent TP and the molar ratio of the dosage of polyferric silicate to the influent TP.Therefore,the dosage of coagulant can be determined when the influent and effluent TP is known.The dosed polyferric silicate results in more compact sludge floc and favorable sludge settleability.
Enhancement of Phosphorus Adsorption on Wetland Sediments by Phosphorus-fixing Agents

Abstract:Enhancing phosphorus adsorption on sediments is critical for improvement of the phosphorus removal efficiency in wetland. Sedi-ments from Luoshijiang River wetland in Yunnan Province were used to examine the effects of different phosphorus-fixing agents(FeCl3, AlCl3 and CaCl2)on improving phosphorus adsorption on the sediments. Adsorption data were fitted by Langmuir and modified Freundlich isotherms. Addition of phosphorus-fixing agents increased adsorption energy(K), maximum adsorption capacity(Qm), and maximum buffer-ing capacity(MBC), but decreased equilibrium phosphorus concentration(EPC0). FeCl3 and AlCl3 had greater effects than CaCl2 did. When the agents were added at a rate of double P amount, EPC0 was 0.000 3 mg·L-1, 0.003 mg·L-1 and 0.049 mg·L-1 for FeCl3, AlCl3 and CaCl2 treatment, respectively, which were 99.8%, 98.2% and 66.8% reduction of the initial phosphorus concentrations. The findings indicate that applying phosphorus-fixing agents could enhance phosphorus adsorption by sediments and improve phosphorus removal from water.

Abstract:Phosphorus pollution is one of the main factors causing water eutrophication. Phosphorus removal by ferrous salt is one of the common methods for phosphorus removal from wastewater. The effects of Fe(II)/P ratio and pH were investigated and new concepts of "balance reaction" and "unbalance reaction" were proposed to reveal their mechanisms. The results showed that the Fe(II)/P ratio had a significant influence on phosphorus removal by ferrous salt with optimal ratio of 2.25. A relationship between residual phosphorus concentration and total Fe(II)/P ratio was established to predict the dose of ferrous salt. pH also had a significant influence on phosphorus removal by ferrous salt with optimal range of 7.0-8.0, and it was found to be the key factor to regulate the competition between Fe-3(PO4)(2) precipitation and Fe(OH)(2) precipitation. The process of phosphorus removal by ferrous salt was an unbalance reaction. And it was ascribed partly to the requirement for a higher residual Fe(II) concentration to get a lower concentration of residual phosphorus in the solution, and partly to the competition between Fe-3(PO4)(2) precipitation and Fe(OH)(2) precipitation. Process Optimization for Phosphorus Removal with Ferric Salt by Response Surface Methodology

Abstract:Currently eutrophication has become a hot issue all over the world.The removal of phosphorus from wastewaters is regarded as an important approach to fight eutrophication since phosphorus is one of the main factors causing eutrophication.The chemical phosphorus removal technology with ferric salt as a precipitant is in widespread use to meet the wastewater discharge standard.The optimization of phosphorus removal technology helps to cut down the cost of wastewater treatment.Herein the response surface methodology(RSM)is introduced to investigate the individual and combined effects of operation parameters.The performance of chemical phosphorus removal technology with ferric salt as a precipitant is dependant on a series of factors.Fe/P ratio,pH and flash mixing speed(FMS)were chosen as objects of study,and single-factor experiment and multiple-factor experiment were carried out to optimize the phosphorus removal efficiency.The results of single-factor experiment showed that both Fe/P ratio and pH had significant effects on phosphorus removal,but FMS did not.When the phosphorus concentration was 100mg/L,the optimal operation parameters were Fe/P ratio 3.0,pH 8.0,FMS 175-225r/min.The results of multiple-factor experiment showed that the individual effects of operation parameters on phosphorus removal were in order as Fe/PpH FMS.The combined effects of operation parameters were in order as Fe/P-FMS pH-FMS Fe/P-pH,among which the effects of Fe/P-FMS and Fe/P-pH were positive and the effect of pH-FMS was negative.Based on the experiment,priority/combinationmodel was proposed to enhance the phosphorus removal with ferric salt as a precipitant.The optimal operation parameters were as follows:Fe/P=2.57,pH=6.31and FMS=136r/min,when the phosphorus concentration was 100mg/L.Both synthetic and real wastewaters were used to verify the feasibility ofpriority/combinationmodel.Operated according to the model,the phosphorus removal was larger than 97%and the fractional error was less than 3%.It can be concluded that the response surface methodology is feasible for the optimization of operation parameters in wastewater treatment processes.Thepriority/combinationmodel is effective for the improvement of phosphorus removal from wastewaters with ferric salt as a precipitant.During the wastewater treatment,the synergic action of operation parameters should be fully used,while the antagonistic action of operation parameters should be carefully avoided.
Coagulation Removal of Phosphorus from a Southern China Reservoir in Different Stages of Algal Blooms: Performance Evaluation and AlP Matching Principle Analysis.

Abstract:Due to excessive nutrient discharge, many reservoirs in southern China suffer from eutrophication and harmful algal blooms. Several methods for phosphorus (P) removal have been proposed, including coagulation, adsorption, and biological methods. Among these methods, coagulation is preferable because of its quick effect, simple operation, and low cost. To investigate the effect and mechanism of coagulation on dephosphorization in reservoir water, the performances of Al-based (AlCl3 and polyaluminum chloride (PACl)) and Fe-based coagulants (FeCl3 and FeSO4) were evaluated in this work. For reservoir water with a total phosphorus (TP) concentration of approximately 0.080 mg/L, aluminum salts showed stable advantages in dephosphorization. AlCl3 reduced the TP level by over 90% when treating the water sample collected at the initial stage of algal blooms, and PACl reduced by over 80% during the blooming stage. To reveal the dephosphorization mechanism and AlP matching principle, synthesized water samples were prepared and treated with AlCl3 and [AlO4Al12(OH)24(H2O)12]7+ (Al13). While simulating the water quality characteristics of reservoir water, important influencing factors were considered. The factors include P content (dissolved phosphorus (DP) and particulate phosphorus (PP)), pH, and extracellular organic matter (EOM). The pH was set to 7.66 and 8.29, with PP proportion set to 20%, 50%, and 80%. Simulated water treatment results indicated that, except for the coagulants species, pH significantly affected the dephosphorization efficiency. Moreover, the effects of P speciation and EOM were confirmed. Based on the coagulation performance and coagulation product characterization, chemical precipitation and inner-sphere complexation were estimated to be the most predominant way that DP and PP match with Al and were efficiently removed by Al-based coagulants.
Effects of Modified Sediments from a Eutrophic Lake in Removing Phosphorus and Inhibiting Phosphatase Activity

Abstract:Phosphorus is one of the main limiting and strong influencing factors of eutrophication, and phosphorus controlling in lake is of great significance for eutrophication. To do this, sediment materials were taken from Dianchi Lake, a typically eutrophic lake, and modified by hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ZnSO4 to remove phosphorus and inhibit alkaline phosphatase activity (APA). Results indicated that phosphorus removal efficiencies of sediments modified by CTAB (S-CTAB), ZnSO4 (S-Zn), and oxidized sediments (OS) were higher than that of the raw sediment (RS). Ability to absorb phosphorus varied, following the order S-Zn>S-CTAB>OS>RS. Sorption was influenced by ionic strength, with the former decreasing with the increase of the latter. Freundlich model well described the sorption isotherm, with an R2 ranging from 0.9168 to 0.9958. Furthermore, compared with the raw sediments, the maximum phosphorus sorption capacities of S-Zn and S-CTAB increased by 12.2% and 124.5%, respectively. Results of desorption studies suggest that the desorption rate of S-Zn was from 3.88 to 13.76%, lower than that of other sediment materials. APA was inhibited by S-CTAB and S-Zn at the same time, with inhibition rates from 29.6% and 61.0% when the concentrations of S-CTAB and S-Zn were 10 nmol L−1 and 0.2 nmol L−1, respectively. This study provides new insights into phosphorus removal and phosphatase activity inhibition in water treatment.
A comprehensive investigation to the fate of phosphorus in full-scale wastewater treatment plants using aluminum salts for enhanced phosphorus removal

Abstract:This study investigated the fate of phosphorus (P) in 8 full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Shanghai, China, in which both biological nutrient removal and aluminum-based chemical phosphorus removal were used. The results showed that 83.8–98.9 % P was transferred to the sludge in the 8 WWTPs by both chemical and biological reactions. P speciation analysis indicated that chemical P precipitates accounted for 84.3 % in the activated sludge, of which crystalline AlPO 4 and amorphous iron‐phosphorus compounds (FePs) were the main components. Sludge with more water-soluble and weakly adsorbed P was generated in the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A/A/O) process than in other processes. Among the 8 WWTPs, the one with the largest flow rate and relatively short sludge retention time (SRT) had the best potential to release P from all types of sludge. The recovery potential of P from thickened sludge can be improved by separately thickening the sludge produced in the high-efficiency sedimentation tank or feeding it into the dewatering process directly. Different P removal chemicals and dosing points changed the amount of chemical precipitate formed but had little effect on the composition of P accumulating organisms (PAOs) at the genus level. Although aluminum-based coagulants were applied in the investigated WWTPs, Fe in wastewater had the most positive effect on the proliferation of PAOs. The synthesis of polyphosphate was also related to the metabolism of PAOs as it affected transmembrane inorganic phosphate (Pi) transport and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthesis. The in-depth understanding of the fate of P is beneficial to improve P recovery efficiency in WWTPs.

Abstract:Controlling the release of sediment phosphorus (P) using chemical agents is a promising method for controlling internal P in eutrophic lakes. However, mineral P formation and changes in the organic P composition after sediment amendment with P-inactivation agents remain poorly understood. Furthermore, little is known about the changes in the sediment microbial community composition after remediation. Here, various ratios of poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) were added to nutrient-rich sediments and incubated. Sequential P extraction, solution/solid-state 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and microbial analyses were periodically performed on the inactivated sediments. The results indicate that PAC and LMB effectively reduced sediment iron-bound P and organic P, respectively, markedly increasing the content of aluminum- and calcium-bound P in the sediment, respectively. Solid-state 31 P NMR results confirmed the formation of rhabdophane (LaPO 4 . nH 2 O) in the LMB-amended sediment. Solution 31 P NMR results showed that PAC preferentially reduced the organic P fractions of pyrophosphate, whereas LMB efficiently reduced the organic P fractions of orthophosphate, monoesters, and diesters in the sediment. Compared with the control sediment, PAC addition can cause short-term negative effects on sediment microbes at high doses, whereas LMB addition can increase bacterial diversity or richness in the sediment. These results provide a deeper understanding of the differences between PAC and LMB in internal sediment P control.

Abstract:For controlling water eutrophication and decreasing total phosphorus (TP) in effluent of wastewater treatment plants, chemical phosphorus removal was studied. Results showed that the optimal FeCl3•6H2O and polyaluminium chloride (PAC) dosage were 20 and 10 mg L-1, respectively, and the reaction time was 15 minutes. Under this condition, the TP concentration was 0.24 and 0.23 mg L-1, respectively. No matter adding PAC or FeCl3•6H2O, their suspended (SS) and residual metal salts were 2 and 0.15 mg L-1. The effect of chemical phosphorus removal process on the concentration of COD and NO3--N showed that the removal efficiency of COD was 45.5% and NO3--N was only 3.1% when PAC was phosphorus removal agent. However, the efficiency of COD was 34.8% with FeCl3•6H2O adding. © 2019 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The municipal lagoon treatment systems which remove phosphorus by chemical addition are the subject of this special study. The objectives of this study were to determine the degree of success of lagoon treatment systems in removing phosphorus and to identify any operational problems. In order to obtain basic data for this study, thirty-two lagoon treatment systems in Michigan and Minnesota were investigated. Chemicals typically used for phosphorus removal include metal salts such as aluminium sulfate (alum), ferrous and ferric chloride, lime, and various polymers. The overall experience with these lagoon systems is that the technology, in its various configurations, has been working very well. Of the thirty-two lagoon treatment facilities reviewed, only two facilities were having problems meeting consistently the effluent phosphorus limits. Generally, the permitted effluent phosphorus limit is 1 mg/l. The influent phosphorus concentrations varied between 0.5 and 15 mg/l. Alum and ferric chloride applications produced consistently high quality effluents while lime applications were not as effective in removing phosphorus. None of these lagoon treatment systems experienced problems with build-up of sludges to levels which affected the effluent concentrations. Accumulated amounts were an inch or less per year, consistent with solids build-up in the primary lagoon cells.

Abstract:The effectiveness and mechanism of aluminum/iron co-modified calcite (Al/Fe-CA) for the control of phosphorus (P) liberation from sediments was investigated. The results showed that Al/Fe-CA possessed good sorption performance for phosphate, and the maximum phosphate sorption capacity for Al/Fe-CA could reach 27.0 mg/g. The major mechanisms involved the surface adsorption of phosphate on calcite, the precipitation between phosphate and Ca<sup>2+</sup> leached from calcite, and the ligand exchange between Al/Fe-bound hydroxyl groups and phosphate to form the Al-O-P and Fe-O-P inner-sphere complexes. The re-releasing risk of Al/Fe-CA-bound P under the circumstances of normal pH (5-9) and reducing environment was very low. Al/Fe-CA addition could significantly reduce the risk of P releasing from sediment to overlying water (OL-water), and the inactivation of mobile P, reactive soluble P (SRP) and diffusive gradient in thin-films (DGT)-labile P in sediment by Al/Fe-CA had a great part in the suppression of sediment-P liberation to OL-water by the Al/Fe-CA amendment. Al/Fe-CA capping and fabric-wrapped Al/Fe-CA capping both could greatly reduce the risk of P releasing from sediment into OL-water, and the formation of a static layer with low concentrations of SRP and DGT-labile P in the upper sediment was the key to sustaining a high P controlling efficiency. When the applied mode of Al/Fe-CA varied from capping to amendment, although the inactivation efficiency of DGT-labile P in the overlying water and upper sediment by Al/Fe-CA would decrease to a certain degree, the inactivation efficiency of DGT-labile P in the lower sediment by Al/Fe-CA would increase. Results of this study suggest that Al/Fe-CA has the high potential to be used as an active capping or amendment material for the management of internal P loading in surface water bodies.

Abstract:The phosphorus of effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plant coagulation removal efficiency,which was treated by a novel coagulant polyaluminum ferric sulfate silicate and the variation of it with the change of dosage,pH of raw water was investigated.The effects of polyacrylamide(PAM) in improving phosphorus removal was also studied.In addition,the phosphorus removal efficiency of four coagulant such as polyaluminum ferric sulfate silicate,polyaluminum chloride(PAC),poly ferric sulfate(PFS) and aluminum sulfate(Al2(SO4)3) had been compared.The results showed that the total phosphorus concentration of effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plant could be reduced effectively,when the dosage was 36 mg·L-1,the total phosphorus concentration of effluent decreased from 1.51 mg·L-1 to 0.32 mg·L-1,which could meet the class one discharge standard of total phosphorus in Shanghai City;the optimum pH range for polyaluminum ferric sulfate silicate to remove phosphorus were 6~10;PAM had good performance in improving turbidity and phosphorus removal efficiency and reduced coagulant dosage;the total phosphorus removal efficiency by polyaluminum ferric sulfate silicate was evidently higher than those by PAC,PFS,Al2(SO4)3.Polyaluminum ferric sulfate silicate has very good application prospect.

Abstract:Biological process of phosphorus removal from waste water can hardly satisfy the national regulation, so such water still needs chemical precipitation. FeCl_3 was used as flocculants in this experiment, several kinds of wastewater were evaluated after chemical phosphorus removal and the optimal reaction conditions were obtained. Results showed that optimal Mol (Fe/P) were different for different waste water, the primary settling water got the maximum Mol (Fe/P) and the lab-scale effluent got the minimum Mol (Fe/P).The experiment provided one feasible method of phosphorus reclamation from waste water.
Effective Treatment of High Phosphorus Pharmaceutical Wastewater by Chemical Precipitation

Abstract:The conditions for the treatment of high phosphorus pharmaceutical wastewater using chemical precipitation were determined to achieve high efficiency on the removal of total phosphorus (TP). The key factors affecting the TP removal efficiencies of four metal salts (FeCl3, AlCl3, MgCl2, and CaCl2), such as molar ratio, initial wastewater pH, and reaction time, were investigated. The optimal metal mole ratios of FeCl3, AlCl3P, MgCl2, and CaCl2 for the TP removal were 1.8:1, 1.8:1, 1.6:1, and 1.6:1 in the initial pH range, respectively. The TP removal efficiencies obtained by FeCl3, AlCl3, MgCl2, and CaCl2 were 99.8%, 98.3%, 96.9%, and 99.2% at the optimal mole ratio and pH conditions with 30min reaction time, respectively. FeCl3 and AlCl3 had better removal performance on COD, wherein the removal rates of COD by FeCl3 and AlCl3 were 38.6% and 27.6%, respectively. FeCl3 and CaCl2 were selected for the combined process of removing TP and overcoming the aforementioned problem. The final effluent quality was better than the one only used on one of the four metal salts, in which the removal rates of TP and COD were as high as 99.8% and 46.9%, respectively. The combined process with FeCl3 and CaCl2 was an effective method for the pretreatment of high phosphorus pharmaceutical wastewater to reduce the processing cost and to decrease the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and TP.

Abstract:In this study, an oxygen-releasing and phosphorus-controlling agent (ORPC) consisting of calcium peroxide (CaO2), bentonite, cement, stearic acid (SA), citric acid (CA) and fine sand was synthesized successfully and used to purify phosphorus-rich river water. The removal of phosphorus using ORPC was studied in actual river water and the results found that over 75.0% phosphorus was removed by adding ORPC at 30 mL h−1 flow rate in initial phosphorus concentrations of 0.76 mg L−1. The ORPC was further used to evaluate the changes of aluminum phosphate (Al-P), ferric phosphate (Fe-P) and calcium phosphate (Ca-P) in sediment. Fe-P, Al-P, and Ca-P in the sediment increased from 0.14, 0.196, and 1.63 mg g−1 to 0.159, 0.372, and 2.74 mg g−1 respectively within 28 days, indicating that the total dissolved phosphorus in the overlying water could be adsorbed by ORPC and further transformed into Al-P, Ca-P, and Fe-P in the sediment, thus inhibiting the release of endogenous phosphorus in sediment to the water. In addition, the performance of ORPC with various contents of SA and CaO2 was investigated. In summary, ORPC can be employed to adsorb phosphorus in water and prevent phosphorus release from sediment, therefore achieving the purpose of controlling phosphorus and maintaining DO at a reasonable level.
