Abstract:The causes of the fracture phenomenon in drawing process and the high spatter coefficient in welding process for ER70S-6 welding wire steel are analyzed and determined.The mean total oxygen content of wire rod is decreased from 0.005 5% to 0.003 0%, the mean nitrogen content of wire rod is decreased from 0.005 5% to 0.004 0%, the mean class C inclusion levels is decreased from 2.0 to 1.0 class, the mean class D inclusion levels is decreased from 1.0 to 0.5 class, through the measures of optimizing chemical composition content and alloying material types of wire rod, improving the binary basicity of refining slag, fining refining and continuous casting process control.The breakage and welding spatter in the process of drawing are decreased obviously, which meets the users' requirement.

Abstract:In order to adapt to the high temperature and heavy load process environment of large forgings, a novel die with “fist-like” structure was designed. The iron-based welding material (RMD248) as the “bone” layer and the nickel-based superalloy welding material (ERNiCr-3) as the “skin” layer were welded on the matrix by wire arc additive manufacture (WAAM). In this work, the grey based Taguchi methodology was used to optimize welding parameters (welding voltage, welding speed and wire feed speed) considering excellent multi-properties (hardness and ultimate tensile strength of high-temperature tensile test) of the dissimilar joint of RMD248 and ERNiCr-3. Further, analysis of variance was done to ascertain the influence of welding parameters on response parameters. Experimental results showed that welding speed was the most effective input parameter followed by wire feed speed and welding voltage. Finally, optimal result was verified through confirmation experiments. Meanwhile, the effect of welding speed on the microstructure and mechanical properties of joint was studied. The microstructures were characterized by optical microscopy (OM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The results indicated that the microstructure of RMD248 was consisted of more retained austenite at lower welding speed. For ERNiCr-3, the finer columnar crystal structure at higher welding speed was observed. At lower welding speed, the microhardness of RMD248 was just slightly lower, but that of ERNiCr-3 was significantly higher, and the ultimate tensile strength was higher. Therefore, the specimen at lower welding speed had better comprehensive mechanical properties.

Abstract:Because aluminum and steel have different characteristics, directly joining them one cannot obtain desired Al/steel welded joint. In order to improve the Al/steel resistance spot welding (RSW) process and achieve a goal of obtaining welded joint with satisfactory quality, this work analyzed the process using dynamic resistance variation. A whole Al/steel RSW process can be divided into three stages: no nugget stage, Al nugget stage and Al/steel double nuggets stage, according to different melting times of the parent metal sheets, which can be reflected in the dynamic resistance profile. Two optimization measures, which are increasing the roughness of contact surface between two parent metals and using spherical electrodes to replace traditional planar electrodes, are proposed. A two-dimensional (2D) numerical model was established and the calculation results showed that the optimization measures could increase the sizes of aluminum nugget and enable earlier melting of two metal sheets. In addition, a series of comparative welding experiments were conducted. Corresponding measurement and analysis results showed that the two optimization measures could improve the tensile-shear strength of the Al/steel welded joint, respectively, by 6.35% ~ 35.33% and 11.63% ~ 81.22%, with a corresponding comprehensive percentage improvement in at least 24.41%. Also, the measurers could promote the wetting and spreading level of liquid aluminum on the surface of solid steel, decrease length of cracks at the edge of the welded joint, and decrease intermetallic compound (IMC) layer thickness and make its distribution more even. This work provides information for process improvement and optimization in dissimilar metal welding.

Abstract:<p>Three nitrogen-rich welding wires with nitrogen content of 0.15 %, 0.6 % and 0.9 % for high nitrogen stainless steel welding were developed by a modified Schaeffler diagram and equilibrium phase diagram calculation. The effect of the chemical compositions especially the nitrogen on the weld defects, element distribution, microstructure, mechanical properties and droplet transfer were studied to evaluate the performance of the welding wires. Nitrogen element in the droplets of nitrogen-rich welding wires was partially lost due to the escape of nitrogen during the welding process, so nitrogen in the welding materials was not completely transported to the weld as designed, resulting in a deviation of actual weld from the design. The joint of the welding wire with 0.6 % nitrogen content had the highest mechanical properties, the tensile strength reached 912.5 MPa, and the impact energy of the weld reached 138.17 J. Full-austenite weld was only obtained in the weld of the wire with 0.15 % nitrogen content, but the tensile strength of the joint was lowest because of the low nitrogen content in the weld. Welding wire with 0.9 % nitrogen content had the most serious nitrogen loss, a few of pores were found in the weld. Moreover, the content of skeleton ferrite in the weld with the welding wire containing 0.9 % nitrogen content was high, resulting in the decrease of the weld impact energy.</p>

Abstract:The weldability and mechanical properties of an ultrahigh strength wear resistant steel were substantially improved by the addition of a small amount of Ca–Mg–RE–Zr composite (1·5 kg t−1) to the molten steel during the refining stage. Based on optical and electron microscopy examinations, the observed improvements were attributed to the enhanced pining effect of inclusions on the original austenite grain boundaries within the coarse grained heat affected zone, as well as the inclusion induced acicular ferrite formation within the fine grained heat affected zone.

Abstract:To determine the optimal welding practises, a study was conducted for this paper. This paper concludes the study to find the best welding conditions for producing thin walls with a smooth surface by selecting the desired parameters for the process of wire Arc additive manufacturing(WAAM). A new method for producing metal parts additively is the WAAM technology and when compared to laser or electron beam technologies, has a cheaper startup and operating expenses.. In accordance with AWS standards, the process parameters are specially chosen while considering the development of the final samples' microstructure and mechanical characteristics after serially depositing weld beads made of ER70S-6 steel. In this work, we have combined a welding robot, a cold metal transfer (CMT) power source, and WAAM technology. To better understand the temperature variance experienced by the samples, which may have an impact on the completed product's mechanical properties, the heat input and feed rate during the weld bead deposition have been changed. The final cooling took place in calm, room-temperature air, and a 20-second delay seen between the placement of one weld bead and the next.The tests on mechanical properties that were conducted included bend tests, Vickers microhardness tests, chemical tests, observations made at both the macro and micro levels, and mechanical properties. The test results have been analysed, and the results indicate that altering the process parameters has little effect on the variations between the samples.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to investigate the effect of copper and titanium micropowder addition on the mechanical and metallurgical properties of additively manufactured low-carbon steel, aiming to produce a modified (multiphase) steel with ferritic low-carbon steel using in situ micropowder addition during wire arc direct energy deposition (WA-DED). Design/methodology/approach A robotic arm equipped with a GMA welding source deposited ER70S6 filler wire on AISI S235 substrate steel using WA-DED. Cu and Ti micropowders were interspersed between layers for microstructural modifications. Microscopy, spectroscopy, diffraction and mechanical testing were used to evaluate the properties of the deposited samples. Findings Incorporating Cu and Ti micropowders significantly enhanced the yield and tensile strength of the deposited material, showing an 83% increase in yield strength and a 33% increase in tensile strength. Microstructural analysis identified key phases such as ferrite, pearlite, bainite, retained austenite and martensite/austenite, with Cu and Ti acting as grain refiners. Nanoscaled Cu precipitates contribute to enhanced low-temperature toughness and a 150% improvement in impact strength at −30°C. Originality/value This study presents a novel approach to overcome the limitations of the available alloys (filler materials). This can be achieved by introducing in situ micropowder alloying during the WA-DED process. The micropowder addition allows altering the properties of the deposited material without changing the parent filler material itself, achieving the desired composition. With this approach, there is no need to manufacture the filler material with the preferred alloy composition separately and then carry out the deposition process.

Abstract:The effect of trace Cr on the microstructure and mechanical properties of high-carbon steel wire and the reasonable content of Cr in the steel were investigated.The results show that the microstructure is optimized with addition of Cr,the content of pre-eutectoid ferrite in microstructure is reduced and the sorbite is increased,the tensile strength of the wire is increased by 75 MPa～100MPa,the comprehensive properties of high-carbon steel wire is improved,and the reasonable content of Cr shall be controlled in a range of 0.18%～0.24%.

Abstract:Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) produces metal components with crucial properties dependent on process parameters. Understanding the effects of these parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties is vital for optimizing WAAM. This study investigated the impact of varying travel speeds (TS) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of low carbon steel ER70S-6 alloy produced by WAAM process. The hypothesis centred on the impact of different TS values on heat input (HI) and cooling rates, and the subsequent effects on the resulting microstructure and mechanical properties of the deposited material. ER70S-6 alloy was deposited at three different TS: 120, 150, and 180 mm/min. Microstructure and mechanical properties (microhardness, tensile strength, elongation) were evaluated for each TS condition. Distinct microstructures were observed in the deposited samples, influenced by cooling rates at different TS. Distinct microstructures emerged in different regions of the deposits due to varying cooling rates at different TS. Higher TS (180 mm/min) significantly reduced pores and cracks while enhancing yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) up to 25.2 ± 0.77% elongation and 502.3 ± 3.17 MPa UTS, respectively. However, UTS remained slightly lower (93%) than the catalogued value for ER70S-6 (540 MPa), indicating a mild softening effect. TS significantly influenced the microstructure and mechanical properties of WAAM-produced ER70S-6 alloy. This study provides key insights into optimizing WAAM parameters for low carbon steel, paving the way for improved component production for diverse industrial applications.

Abstract:Due to the complex composition and high proportion of alloys in traditional ultra-high-strength steel, the dilemma caused by ultra-high strength and low toughness in casting and forging forming processes requiring subsequent heat treatment can be mitigated with an efficient and economical rolling process. In this work, a thermodynamic model is proposed to calculate the change in the mechanical response due to the thermal contribution based on alloy phase diagrams. The influence of alloy content on precision laws was analyzed, and the chemical component was optimized. A verification simulation without real experiment was conducted to study the potential and limitations of the alloy content on mechanical properties. The results showed that the main equilibrium phases and the phases’ chemical compounds were clarified. The influences of Ni, Mo, Cr, and W on transformation laws were elucidated in detail, and the main optimized composition was determined to be 0.23C, 1.96Si, 1.93Mn, 0.07Ni, 1.96Cr, and 0.35Mo. At a cooling rate of 10 °C/s, the content of optimized alloying element fully performed its role in steel, verifying that the chemical component system was in the optimal range. The thermodynamic models and our conclusions have the potential to be generalized for many other materials and process configurations without requiring extensive material testing.

Abstract:In the present work, the Q345B low-alloy steel with different contents and ER309L stainless steel were melted together to obtain new alloys. The aim was to design the composition of weld metal (Q345B low-alloy steel as the base material and ER309L welding wire as the filler material) and improve the corrosion resistance of the weld metal. During the welding process, the composition of the weld metal was controlled to match the new alloys by changing the welding heat input. A relationship curve between fusion ration and welding heat input was obtained. The research focused on analyzing the effect of mixed-smelting ratio between Q345B and ER309L and welding heat input on the microscopic structure and corrosion performance of the prepared samples. The results show that the melted alloys containing 20% to 30% Q345B consist of a ferrite (δ) phase and austenite (A) phase, the samples containing 45% to 50% Q345B consist of a martensite (M) phase and austenite (A) phase, and the sample containing 40% Q345B consists of a martensite (M) phase, ferrite (δ) phase, and austenite (A) phase. As the mixed-smelting ratio of Q345B/ER309L increased, the corrosion resistance of samples decreased gradually. For the weld metal, the fusion ration between Q345B base material and ER309L welding wire increases with the welding heat input. When the heat input changed from 0.645 kJ/mm to 2.860 kJ/mm, the composition of the weld metal was consistent with the melted alloys containing 20–45% Q345B. The microstructure and corrosion resistance of the weld metal could be designed by the melting means, which has important guiding significance for engineering applications.

Research on the Welding Process and Weld Formation in Multiple Solid-Flux Cored Wires Arc Hybrid Welding Process for Q960E Ultrahigh-Strength Steel

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel welding process for ultrahigh-strength steel. The effects of welding parameters on the welding process and weld formation were studied to obtain the optimal parameter window. It was found that the metal transfer modes of solid wires were primarily determined by electrical parameters, while flux-cored wires consistently exhibited multiple droplets per pulse. The one droplet per pulse possessed better welding stability and weld formation, whereas the short-circuiting transfer or one droplet multiple pulses easily caused abnormal arc ignition that decreased welding stability, which could easily lead to a "sawtooth-shaped" weld formation or weld offset towards one side with more spatters. Thus, the electrical parameters corresponding to one droplet per pulse were identified as the optimal parameter window. Furthermore, the weld zone (WZ) was predominantly composed of AF, and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) primarily consisted of TM and LM. Consequently, the welded joint still exhibited excellent mechanical properties, particularly toughness, despite higher welding heat input. The average tensile strength reached 928 MPa, and the impact absorbed energy at -40 °C for the WZ and HAZ were 54 J and 126 J, respectively. In addition, the application of triple-wire welding for ultrahigh-strength steel (UHSS) demonstrated a significant enhancement in post-weld deposition rate, with increases of 106% and 38% compared to single-wire and twin-wire welding techniques, respectively. This process not only utilized flux-cored wire to enhance the mechanical properties of joints but also achieved high deposition rate welding.

Abstract:Traditional methods of adding sulfur in free-cutting steel do not provide stable results and also cause environmental pollution problems. In order to produce free-cutting sulfur-containing steel with exact sulfur content, cored wire with sulfur-containing filler was used during feeding treatment Effect of parameters such as feeding rate etc on sulfur recovery efficiency was investigated. The experimental results show that the mean recovery efficiency of sulfur was 76%, the treatment time of feeding was 2 minutes or so, and the melting period was shortened.
Quality Control of High Carbon Steel for Steel Wires

Abstract:High-carbon steel wires used for bridge cables, tire reinforcement materials and cutting materials of silicon ingot for photovoltaic industry require an extremely fine diameter and high strength. Poor control of centerline segregation, inclusion and microstructure of high-carbon steel is detrimental to drawability and subsequent fatigue performance. Prof. Weiqing Chen's group at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) has been investigating the quality control of high-carbon steel through a low-cost one-stage hot rolling process since 2000. This paper reviews the main research from this group. The laboratory-scale and industrial results are presented. Intensive secondary cooling, final electromagnetic stirring (F-EMS), final permanent magnetic stirring (F-PMS), and soft reduction are investigated and applied to control centerline segregation, and the application scope is also discussed. A combination of redesign of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) and refining slag, utilization of Al-free refractory and the addition of low-melting-point compounds is studied and applied effectively to control inclusions. Measurements and mechanisms to control network cementite, martensite, banded structure and undesired texture are investigated and discussed. Integration of the above research has achieved industrial application in more than 10 steelworks and was further extended to application in spring steel, welding wire steel and some other wire rods.

Abstract:By reviewing literatures about the relationships between microstructure and mechanical property in steel and the development history of ultra-high strength steel,design of structure,composition and heat treatment process for ultra-high strength is made.Steel containing <0.5wt%C,1～2%Si,low Mn(Ni) and carbide forming element such as 0.48C-1.19Mn-1.18Si-0.95Ni-0.2Nb-0.2Mo(wt%) steel may possess ultimate tensile strength of >2000MPa along with total elongation >10%,and low cost,through a novel heat treatment process,Quenching-Partitioning-Tempering(Q-P-T) process.Q-P-T steel containing lower carbon content also gives good combination properties.

Abstract:ERNiMo-2 wire is the matching welding filler metal for the GH3535 alloy, which is prone to occur solidification cracking during welding. Optimizing the composition of ERNiMo-2 wire is an effective way to reduce the welding solidification cracking susceptibility (WSCS) and improve the performance of GH3535 alloy welded joint. In this study, the WSCS of ERNiMo-2 wires with different Si content was evaluated by the trans-varestraint test, and the mechanism of Si affecting the weldability of ERNiMo-2 wire was revealed. The results showed that the solidification cracking temperature range (SCTR) of Si1-Si4 wires with Si content increasing is 102 °C, 123.2 °C, 119.1 °C and 116.3 °C, respectively. The existence of eutectic M 2 C and M 6 C in the form of liquid film at the end of solidification leads to partial wetting of the grain boundary, which reduces the binding force of the grain boundary and promotes crack initiation. Low solidification shrinkage, thermal shrinkage, solidification temperature range and a small amount of eutectic liquid in the mushy region make the Si1 wire have the best resistance to solidification cracking. The aforementioned factors increase with Si content, then resulting in the increase of WSCS of Si2. However, the amount and fluidity of eutectic liquid in weld metal increase when the Si content increases to Si3 and Si4, which leads to the occurrence of eutectic backfilling and decrease in WSCS of ERNiMo-2 wire.

Effect of base metal chemical composition on properties of resistance spot welding joint of DP590 steel

Abstract:Based on the strength test,SEM analysis of cross-tensile fracture and TEM analysis of nugget of spot welding joint(RSW)from two kinds of DP590 dual-phase high strength steel with approximate strength level and different chemical composition,the mechanism and effect of chemical component of base metal on the strength and toughness of RSW joint of the DP590 steel are studied.The resuhs show the more carbon content in base metal is,the less cross-tensile strength and toughness of spot welding joint are.The main mechanism is that the twin martensite forms in the nugget and fusion zone as the increase of carbon content under imbalanced express cooling of RSW,which will lead toughness of spot welding joint to decrease.
