Abstract:A densely packed iridium ultramicroelectrode arrays (UMEAs) was developed for determination of trace concentration of heavy metals in water. The newly designed UMEAs was manufactured in silicon technology with four separate working electrode arrays on chip (6.4mm×5.5mm). Each array contains 1012 (46 columns×22 rows) disc-shaped iridium ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) with a diameter of 1.8μm each and an interelectrode distance of 25μm. These UMEs showed a superior diffusion behavior (no shielding effects), greater mass transport rates, and higher signal-to-noise ratios. Therefore, the sensitivity of measurements can be greatly improved, compared to macroelectrode based analytical instruments. Using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV), trace concentration of heavy metal like Pb and Cd in aqueous solution could be successfully determined at ppb level.
