Abstract:In this note, we will show that no nonuniform lattice of SO (3, 1) can be the fundamental group of a quasi-compact Kähler manifold. Thus, combining with the result in [1], one gets that a nonuniform latice in SO(n, 1)(n≥ 3) cannot be π 1 of any quasi-compact Kählerian manifold.

Abstract:Given an arithmetic lattice of the unitary group U(3,1) arising from a hermitian form over a CM-field, we show that all unitary representations of U(3,1) with nonzero cohomology contribute to the cohomology of the attached arithmetic complex 3-manifold, at least when we pass to a finite-index subgroup of the given arithmetic lattice.

Abstract:In this note, we will show that the fundamental group of any negatively delta-pinched (delta>1/4) manifold cannot be the fundamental group of a quasi-compact Kahler manifold. As a consequence of our proof, we also show that any nonuniform lattice in F4(-20) cannot be the fundamental group of a quasi-compact Kahler manifold. The corresponding result for uniform lattices was proved by Carlson and Hernandez [3]. Finally, we follow Gromov and Thurston [6] to give some examples of negatively delta-pinched manifolds (delta>1/4) of finite volume which, as topological manifolds, admit no hyperbolic metric with finite volume under any smooth structure. This shows that our result for delta-pinched manifolds is a nontrivial generalization of the fact that no nonuniform lattice in SO(n,1)(ngreater than or equal to3) is the fundamental group of a quasi-compact Kahler manifold [21].

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex projective variety with only canonical singularities and with trivial canonical bundle. Let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. Assume that the pair $(X,L)$ is the flat limit of a family of smooth polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. Assume that for each singular point $x \in X$ there exist a Kahler-Einstein Fano manifold $Z$ and a positive integer $q$ dividing $K_Z$ such that $-\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ is very ample and such that the germ $(X,x)$ is locally analytically isomorphic to a neighborhood of the vertex of the blow-down of the zero section of $\frac{1}{q}K_{Z}$. We prove that up to biholomorphism, the unique weak Ricci-flat Kahler metric representing $2\pi c_1(L)$ on $X$ is asymptotic at a polynomial rate near $x$ to the natural Ricci-flat Kahler cone metric on $\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ constructed using the Calabi ansatz. In particular, our result applies if $(X, \mathcal{O}(1))$ is a nodal quintic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. This provides the first known examples of compact Ricci-flat manifolds with non-orbifold isolated conical singularities.
A note on complex hyperbolic lattices and strict hyperbolization

Abstract:We study the connection between the fundamental groups of complex hyperbolic manifolds and those of spaces arising from the (relative) strict hyperbolization process due to Charney--Davis and Davis--Januszkiewicz--Weinberger. Viewing a non-uniform lattice $\Gamma$ in $\text{PU}(n,1)$ as a relatively hyperbolic group with respect to its cusp subgroups in the usual way, we show that when $n\geq 2$, $\Gamma$ is not isomorphic to any relatively hyperbolic group arising from the relative strict hyperbolization process, via work of Lafont--Ruffoni. We also prove that a uniform lattice in $\text{PU}(n,1)$ is not the fundamental group of a Charney-Davis strict hyperbolization when $n\geq 2$, assuming the initial complex satisfies some mild conditions.

Abstract:Let $d$ be a square free positive integer and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ a totally real quadratic field over $\mathbb{Q}$. We show there exists an arithmetic lattice L in $SL(8,\mathbb{R})$ with entries in the ring of integers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ and a sequence of lattices $\Gamma_n $ commensurable to L such that the systole of the locally symmetric finite volume manifold $\Gamma_n \diagdown SL(8,\mathbb{R}) \diagup SO(8)$ goes to infinity as $n \rightarrow \infty$, yet every $\Gamma_n$ contains the same hyperbolic 3-manifold group $\Pi$, a finite index subgroup of the arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold vol3. Notably, such an example does not exist in rank one, so this is a feature unique to higher rank lattices.

Abstract:If Gamma is a nonuniform, irreducible lattice in a semisimple Lie group whose real rank is greater than 1, we show Gamma contains a subgroup that is isomorphic to a nonuniform, irreducible lattice in either SL(3,R), SL(3,C), or a direct product SL(2,R)^m x SL(2,C)^n$, with m + n > 1. (In geometric terms, this can be interpreted as a statement about the existence of totally geodesic subspaces of finite-volume, noncompact, locally symmetric spaces of higher rank.) Another formulation of the result states that if G is any isotropic, almost simple algebraic group over Q (the rational numbers), such that the real rank of G is greater than 1, then G contains an isotropic, almost simple Q-subgroup H, such that H is quasisplit, and the real rank of H is greater than 1.

Abstract: We study noncompact, complete, finite volume, Riemannian 4-manifolds $M$ with sectional curvature $-1<K<0$. We prove that $\pi_1 M$ cannot be a 3-manifold group. A classical theorem of Gromov says that $M$ is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold $\M$ with boundary $\partial\barM$. We show that for each $\pi_1$-injective boundary component $C$ of $\M$, the map $i_*$ induced by inclusion $i\colon C\rightarrow \M$ has infinite index image $i_*(\pi_1 C)$ in $\pi_1 \M$. We also prove that $M$ cannot be homotoped to be contained in $\partial\M$.

Abstract:We classify nilpotent Lie algebras with complex structures of weakly non-nilpotent type in real dimension eight, which is the lowest dimension where they arise. Our study, together with previous results on strongly non-nilpotent structures, completes the classification of 8-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras admitting complex structures of non-nilpotent type. As an application, we identify those that support a pseudo-Kähler metric, thus providing new counterexamples to a previous conjecture and an infinite family of (Ricci-flat) non-flat neutral Calabi-Yau structures. Moreover, we arrive at the topological restriction $b_1(X)\geq 3$ for every pseudo-Kähler nilmanifold $X$ with invariant complex structure, up to complex dimension four.

Abstract:We establish an upper bound on the number of real multiquadratic fields that admit a universal quadratic lattice of a given rank, or contain a given amount of indecomposable elements modulo totally positive units, obtaining density zero statements. We also study the structure of indecomposable elements in real biquadratic fields, and compute a system of indecomposable elements modulo totally positive units for some families of real biquadratic fields.

Abstract:We construct explicit finite-dimensional orthogonal representations $\pi_N$ of $\operatorname{SL}_{N}(\mathbb{Z})$ for $N \in \{3,4\}$ all of whose invariant vectors are trivial, and such that $H^{N - 1}(\operatorname{SL}_{N}(\mathbb{Z}),\pi_N)$ is non-trivial. This implies that for $N$ as above, the group $\operatorname{SL}_{N}(\mathbb{Z})$ does not have property $(T_{N-1})$ of Bader-Sauer and therefore is not $(N-1)$-Kazhdan in the sense of De Chiffre-Glebsky-Lubotzky-Thom, both being higher versions of Kazhdan's property $T$.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a "pseudo-effective" version of the holonomy principle for compact Kähler manifolds with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that if a compact complex manifold $M$ admits a Kähler metric $\omega$ with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature and $(M,\omega)$ has no nonzero truly flat tangent vector at some point (which is satisfied when the holomorphic sectional curvature is quasi-positive), then $M$ must be projective and rationally connected. This answers a problem raised by Matsumura and Yang and extends Yau's conjecture. We also prove that a compact simply connected Kähler manifold with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature is projective and rationally connected. Additionally, we classify non-projective Kähler 3-dimensional manifolds with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature. Furthermore, we show that a compact Kähler manifold admits a Hermitian metric with positive real bisectional curvature is a projective and rationally connected manifold.

Abstract:Abstract A p -Kähler structure on a complex manifold of complex dimension n is given by a d -closed transverse real ( p , p )-form. In the paper, we study the existence of p -Kähler structures on compact quotients of simply connected Lie groups by discrete subgroups endowed with an invariant complex structure. In particular, we discuss the existence of p -Kähler structures on nilmanifolds, with a focus on the case $$p =2$$ p = 2 and complex dimension $$n = 4$$ n = 4 . Moreover, we prove that a $$(n-2)$$ ( n - 2 ) -Kähler almost abelian solvmanifold of complex dimension $$n\ge 3$$ n ≥ 3 has to be Kähler.
